@@jwjoness I laughed at that. I saw the video where they said men over 40 should not wear leather jackets and I left them a comment telling them how wrong they were on this one. Even though I don’t look to GQ for advice, I did point out that GQ raved over the chocolate brown leather jacket that Daniel Craig wore on the Knives Out promotional tour at the age of 53. I asked them since Daniel Craig plays James Bond, they aren’t trying to tell James Bond he isn’t dressing appropriately for his age, are they?
As usual your review was spot on! Especially liked the fact that I was not the only one who noticed AW say that leather jackets should NOT be worn by the older man.....who are they kidding, some older dudes rock the leather jacket, it’s just a matter of selecting the appropriate jacket for the particular man.
It's ridiculously stupid to say that all the older dudes can't wear leather jacket. First, you need to dress for your body type and look regardless your age. Then, if you're 40+and 50+ in a Great shape and you workout on a regular basis and eat healthy food, I don't see any reason to not to wear a leather jacket ...
100% agreed. Older guys can completely pull it off. I’ll add my link here too as to the styling I go for. Clean, mature, not overdone. I think this gentleman pulls it off just fine. www.luckybrand.com/vincent-leather-jacket/193315704555.html?src=BGSEG&campaign=1554056290&adgroup=67113514509&target=&item=&gclid=CjwKCAiA3OzvBRBXEiwALNKDP5rAznh8WYpN5658daq3nmObBKmEbPRmYnpIF4TJldwhErwFYWXP1xoC9GwQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds
Definitely YES to black leather jackets . I Am 63 and have 3 leathers .Two for riding and one for dress . I also have a nice trucker jacket and a imported cashmere overcoat that belonged to my father .I recently had it tailored to fit my body better and it came out just awesome looks like a million bucks and I really like the fact that its a little longer than most off the rack ones I see around . It even looks good with timberlands and jeans when I want to do that look !! Great videos and products you do here Thank You !!!
And when purchasing a leather jacket, one doesn't necessarily have to break the bank. I'm also 63, and men are always asking where I got my genuine leather brown suede bomber jacket. You should see their expressions when I say, "$30 at Goodwill."
Have to, have to, HAVE to consider a Harrington in your line-up. One of the most versatile and stylish designs of the last 50 years. Perfect call, John.
The Harrington in my opinion is the men's equivalent of the famous "little black dress" that all women are meant to have, which is suitable for any occasion. It's basically a golf or weekend item but you can dress it up with a proper shirt and tie, especially if the jacket is a dark colour.
76 and I own three leather jackets. One is brown that naturally ages which I wear with a Robin Hood style Fedora. My lady dentist spotted them hung up and commented that she thought Indian Jones had visited. :)
Spot on. Sportcoats are great for spring and fall. IMHO, browns with checks for fall, and greens with windowpanes for spring. Don't forget the pocket squares... Leather blazers/car coats can carry one through the winter.
I'm glad I found this channel. I've always had the most difficult time finding decent fitting clothes. I'm 5'7", and also a bodybuilder over 220lbs and want in clothes. Gonna check out the link. Thanks!
Excellent video and ideas. I dumped a lot of overcoats/jackets that didn’t fit. My new favorite go to jacket is a new navy blue bomber from the gap. Sized down to small it looks classic, great and it fits. I’m just under 6 ft. 148 lbs. Also I got a new Alpha Industries bomber silver/black reversible it’s great for colder days low 40’s or below. I have a conservative black leather jacket. Two others I’d mention, the Army Field jacket can be a good look even for older guys. Mine is from Ralph Lauren and I had it tailored. Reminiscent (vaguely) of the old Vietnam era Army Surplus coats when I was growing up in the mid 70s but way more stylish than functional. And don’t forget the trench coat with optional lining, great for rain, sleet, snow. And it works from mid Fall to mid Spring. I avoid the denim jackets from my youth but that’s just me. They look great on you and others.
At 5'8" 155 lbs Peter Manning has taken me to the next level. For once in my life I have clothes that fit other than tailoring. great channel! i also loved your speech...carry on!
Great video, I don't have a denum jacket, haven't had one since I was a kid, but that's about to change ...keep up the great work !! You are never to old to dress better.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I love jackets especially the following, Black Denim jacket, Vintage Leather Men's Lambskin Racing Jacket, Pierotucci Italian Leather Jacket, Keith leather Cafe Jacket in Black, Montreaux Moroccan lambskin leather Jacket. Every time I wear any of these jackets I get compliments from men & women. Happy Holidays... Abrazos
Im 26 y.o. and love your channel. I understand that you are typically for the older man but I love your understated, "grown man" look! Keep up the content!
Owning two wool/cashmere overcoats and two trenchcoats I'm always ready for cold or wet weather. Living on the east coast of Canada where it can be ten below and snowing one day and then a day later above freezing and raining such versatility is necessary. Wearing them over a wool sport coat on warmer days and a heavier Harris Tweed on colder ones mean I'm comfortable in any weather. Generally, overcoats are best in cold and trenchcoats in wet. Scarves and pairs of leather gloves of varying weight or insulation finish the look quite nicely.
@@Newbill17 Thank you, William. It's warmer here than in was in northern Canada where, before retiring, I lived for many years. There forty or even fifty below was not uncommon but layering the above coats with undershirts and sweater vests etc meant I was still very warm even at forty-five below.
I live in Nashville which has mildish winters. My go to is definitely the bomber. I can even layer a vest or cardigan underneath. I tend towards the trucker in the spring. When it gets cold enough, I break out the Pea coat. I’m telling you this is the best coat to keep warm and look like a boss. I get more compliments with it than any other coat. Thanks for another helpful video.
Sizing down is a great tip. I've had to do that myself on a couple of jackets. Normally wear medium (5'9", 163 lbs), but I've had to go small on two of mine and probably should have on my leather jacket.
Hahahaha. Ashley and Dorian. I watch those 2 as well. I like hearing different opinions on dressing. It makes me think more about what I drape over myself. Love the video!
The leather jacket from Peter Manning looks fabulous. I’ve returned 2 leather jackets from other brands just because the fit is off. I bet they fit perfectly! And AW’s opinions are usually horrible.
I agree with you on AW's take on us men 50 and older not wearing a leather jacket. My response to her video that I will wear one and I don't care what she thinks.
I'm 20 and yes I just subscribed to a channel named 40 over fashion... But I felt that it was informative for younger guys also. Here's my question it may not be formal for the puffer jacket but what would be the best type of clothes too match it?
The down puffer layered underneath an insulated raincoat or wool topcoat is a great substitute for a parka. Each coat alone is only good to +5ºC, but when you layer them together, they're weather appropriate down to -25ºC with a ushanka or insulated flat cap with ear flaps, and what I wear daily for our Canadian winters.
Great video as always. Living in Montreal our winters can get pretty frigid and although function and warmth are high on my list when looking for a winter coat I have never forgone fit and style in my winter coats. It has to keep me warm but it also has to look good. That comes at a price but I won’t skimp if it means that I get the best of both worlds.
I dont mean to be so off topic but does someone know a trick to log back into an Instagram account..? I was dumb forgot the password. I love any assistance you can offer me.

Great collection. I have all of these except the long coat as we get only 2 months of cold weather. Favorite go-to is fleece-inside zipper sweat shirts and bomber. Sports jackets are ❤️
I have two or three of every jacket mentioned but, I don’t do ‘Sports Jackets’ as I think that they don’t suit me. The pea jacket is a must though along with a really high quality flight jacket I’m 54 now but look in my early forties according to ladies
i do enjoy your channel.i am 65 a retiree not much interested in fashion but i interested in looking presentable on a budget and dressing age appropriately! i think you do have alot of good suggestions even for old dogs like me lol! Cheers
I have picked up so many great light jackets and leather coats but I seldom actually NEED them in the New England climate because the season for them is so short. You don't want them if its hot and if its really cold you want a thicker, warmer one. That Herrington jacket is pretty damn snazzy. I need one of those. 5-9 inches tall is not short. That's a bit taller than average. I am 5-7 and I don't have the same problem with arm length. What I have a problem is, because I am so average, other guys my size snap up my sizes before I get there. The stores buy extra of the popular sizes but not enough. I 100 percent agree with your assessment about leather jackets. The Denim jacket looked too small on you --exsp the lighter one.
I would warn about sizing down any jackets for the cold: watch out for proper arm length. If a jacket gets too short on the arms, then it's not a good fit for you, regardless of how well it might fit your body. You want the arms to cover and comfortably reach slightly beyond your wrist. If it's not long enough for that, it will be a bad fit for you specially when you most need it: when it's cold.
Great video John!!! I have recently been to France and I went to Gallery Laffayette with all their famous designers and all of them had puffer jackets in different colours. I bought one at Gucci which I love!!!! I like to wear puffer jackets becayse they are versatile and practical to wear. I generally put on a t shirt underneath. I am 57 and I’ll wear leather jackets forever!!!!! Mine is brown which goes with everything!!!! Kkkkkkk
Pros of investing in pieces made from suede: (1) Looks aesthetically pleasing (2) Breathable Cons: (1) Doesn't tolerate any elements. (2) Doesn't block out wind, nor it does protect One from colder temperatures (3) High mantanience (stains are hard to clean as the jacket cannot get wet---even a lil bit is quite risky ) (4) Can be easily torn apart. (5) Instead of the jacket adjusting to the weather, One needs to adjust the weather to the jacket, which is an antithesis of any kind and/or form of functionality (6) Expensive as hell. (7) If the suede is integrally teated to tolerate elements, it loses on the appeal as it's not as crisp anymore. (8) One can achieve similar appeal by switching to wool ane/or cord. Way cheaper, more efficient, and functional, same vibe, and a similar appeal.
Im living in tropical country, Indonesia so i uasualy wear thin outerwear . Cardigan and sweater. Not too thick but enough to block the wind. But... i think i need to have harrington. Thx u.. 👍
Hi. I am from Sydney, Australia. I have been watching your videos for about a month and I like them very much. I would like to know what do you think about the man bags (cross body), do you have any suggestions or video about it? Thanks. Juan
Never thought to size down on jackets for better silhouette. Loved the bomber jacket with interesting trim and collar. Too bad it was last year's. Thanks John.
I'm 42, & right now my go to is a denim jacket with Ralph Lauren hoodie underneath it a Ralph Lauren olive military jacket but not with a lot of pockets, more refined. I'm looking for a leather jacket and Harrington too but I'm a 3xl at 284 pounds. My question is wear should the length of my jackets be without looking sloppy long or kid short ? Thanks for any input or where I can get affordable ones in my size. Happy Holidays!
I have everything as mentioned on your video and I just won a bid for a Harrington Jacket on eBay, the condition was new with no tags. FYI, I do have a field jacket and a hoodie from Peter Manning as well.
The 6 Jackets that I wear the most. Burton Navy Blazer, Berghaus Waterproof, Barbour Waxed Jacket, Bellstaff Team Jacket, Burberry Overcoat and a Baracuta Harrington. I'm looking for a new Harris Tweed Jacket, but I can't find a manufacture that begins with a 'B' ;)
Another great video brother! How about a video on every day go to shoes. I love my Nike air max but I’m 52 and I’m conscious about wearing sneakers outside of the gym when I want to stand out with a sense of style, but I can’t live in my double monk strap shoes. Lol...I think you get my dilemma.
Hey john Just simply had to say how especially fly you're looking in This recent video, and love that you wear close fitting trousers, very attractive... All the jackets were very stylish on you too, have a very happy Xmas paula in the UK
At the moment it's a Barbour Beacon waxed jacket and if the temp drops too low I either pair the wax jacket with a Barbour Carn Baffle or, especially if it's raining and cold just throw on my North Face Highland jacket that I normally wear hiking. Also, those classic leather jackets look better on people who are 40+ IMHO.
That is my only down fall. I'm 5'7 135lbs and 4% body fat. As not everybody is fat and over weight. So I have to hunt for clothes that fit. As I'm big on proper fit, detail\construction. And like you said. When it comes to suites\shirts. I visit thrift stores. Find well made expensive clothing. Then have it alter to fit me. They may not be Phillips Men's Wear. But I picked up some Black Lapel..Some older Italian ones... That were not made in China...Which seems common today. So pay attention to stitching\fabric and detail. As even expensive suites are made in China now. And I can spot them... Only good part. I spend most my life outdoors. As I like getting dirty and fixing stuff. It makes me feel I accomplished something each day..Learn one new thing everyday. Inside a year. I learned 365 new skills..
Hi John . I had not really considered the Michelin Man jacket ( thats what I call them ) until I saw you model one and saw how good it looked on you. Now I am having second thoughts. I have several different leather jackets from bombers to blazers to trench coats. Heck ,back in my 20's I even had a black fringed biker jacket . One of my favorite jackets however is a bomber that I have had for close to 25 years. It's a blue , brown, and green patchwork leather with a zip out faux fur liner. When the liner is in it is a very warm jacket in the winter. It even has a hood that can snap on. The only thing I've ever had done to it in all the years I've had it was to take it into my shoe repair guy to have a new zipper put in it a few years back. Peace and Happy Holidays :)
Hahaha loved the playful jab at AWxInc. I subscribe to their channel. Once you mentioned leather jackets I knew they would be brought up. Leather jackets are not my style but like you said if you keep them plain they can work for the 40+ crowd.
Check out The Elegant Oxford. He posts videos about everything there is to know about shoe finishes, mirror shines, applying patina, the best shoe care products etc. You can send shoes to him for a patina job or anything else. You won’t believe the beauty of his work.
Great selection of jackets. Especially like the leather jacket. Almost anything classic in leather never goes out of style. Have a hard time believing you have a hard time getting anything to fit right; sleeve, neck, chest, etc. At 5' 9" you are right at the midpoint of the bell curve for men. hahaha
Thanks! Funny, I always thought 5' 11" was a standard. Even some of the shirts that are meant to be worn untucked are still too long for me and almost every off the rack jacket has super long sleeves.
Two questions: Do you have suggestions on brands that fit longer torsos well? Secondly, would you share the brand of the leather jacket? Thanks. You moderate a good channel with your direct and understated delivery. I enjoy your videos.
The leather jacket is from Peter Manning. Just about any off the rack stuff should fit your torso just fine. Just dedicate some time to look and try stuff on.
Excellent review John, Everyman should have a least one of each of those jacket in their wardrobe, and ideally a few so you have colour options per jacket type. Would suggest a pea coat/double breasted coat for any man over 6 foot. On smaller guys the extra fabric can make you look shorter. Bit all road a very good line up 👍 merry Christmas as well!
I came back to this thread to look for the link I posted. Couldn't remember what leather jacket it was, but I'm like "Dude... now I want that jacket myself." Ha! Anyway, finally watched that AW vid. A seriously stupid and condescending thing to say on their part, no wonder they caught shade. I took their challenge and posted a pic of me in mine. Curious to learn their "PROFESSIONAL JUDGEMENT." LOL. Ps... I would NEVER hire a stylist who isn't talented enough to make me look good in a leather jacket, no matter how arrogant they are about their 'subjective' opinion.
I would love to find a nice leather jacket I can afford! I picked up a nice pea coat a couple weeks ago and love it! But my thing is I wear mostly brown shoes so I don’t have a nice jacket that matches so I end up wearing vests all the time lol
40 Over Fashion I’m going to get a nice leather bag first lol I don’t wear jackets that often so a nice bag is a little more important. But I am definitely going to keep looking!!
Yes, yes, yes to the leather jacket for us older guys!!!
Love the name drop

(1) Doesn't tolerate any elements.
(2) Doesn't block out wind, nor it does protect One from colder temperatures
(3) High mantanience (stains are hard to clean as the jacket cannot get wet---even a lil bit is quite risky )
(4) Can be easily torn apart.
(5) Instead of the jacket adjusting to the weather, One needs to adjust the weather to the jacket, which is an antithesis of any kind and/or form of functionality
(6) Expensive as hell.
(7) If the suede is integrally teated to tolerate elements, it loses on the appeal as it's not as crisp anymore.
(8) One can achieve similar appeal by switching to wool ane/or cord. Way cheaper, more efficient, and functional, same vibe, and a similar appeal.
Thanks John.
Nice video with useful tips. Would be interested in knowing the brand of the awesome looking leather jacket.
Thank you! The leather jacket is from Peter Manning!
Your presentation is on spot. Love your channel.
I have all those styles of jackets and hahaha I also did the down sizing on some jackets. You are right on the money…
Thank you Mario!
Im living in tropical country, Indonesia so i uasualy wear thin outerwear . Cardigan and sweater. Not too thick but enough to block the wind. But... i think i need to have harrington. Thx u.. 👍
Did you play Mike Teevee in the 70s Willy Wonka movie?
Hi. I am from Sydney, Australia. I have been watching your videos for about a month and I like them very much. I would like to know what do you think about the man bags (cross body), do you have any suggestions or video about it? Thanks. Juan
Personally, I’m not a fan of Crossbody bags. I think they look best on younger guys. Thanks for commenting Juan!
Thank you for your opinion. Juan
John good to see you again. How about the white color sports jacket? Thank you. God bless you always!
Never thought to size down on jackets for better silhouette. Loved the bomber jacket with interesting trim and collar. Too bad it was last year's. Thanks John.
Thank you!
All styles are great for the over 50 crowd...
I have all the jackets you modeled John, great video! 👍🏽😀
Thank you!
Nice!
Nice video and it’s freezing cold in England plus it rains all of the time especially in winter so we Brits need many coats 😊🇬🇧🇺🇸
That’s what I’ve heard! Thank you very much for your comments!
Jackets are all great John...but I like the denim jacket you wore in this video....haha
Ha! Thank you!
Stay well, dress well cheers mate 👍
Thank you! Cheers Rob!
Great video. This light blue denim jacket is amazing. Can you link it here, please? I can't find anything on this shade. Thank you!
White low top chuck taylors.
Ha, deciphered the coughlish! Like the leather look
Haha! Thanks!
dorian and ashley left the group!
Hey john Just simply had to say how especially fly you're looking in This recent video, and love that you wear close fitting trousers, very attractive... All the jackets were very stylish on you too, have a very happy Xmas paula in the UK
Thank you very much Paula!
Thank you for this video! May I have your opinion on biker jackets for men over 50? I have a biker jacket from Moncler. I absolutely love it.
Thank you! I think the more classic and simple, the better.
Great addition, and I tend to agree with you!
Really enjoy your channel. Thanks!
Nice! just make sure the puffer jacket isn't too puffy, but still warm . Thanks!
Hahaha loved the playful jab at AWxInc. I subscribe to their channel. Once you mentioned leather jackets I knew they would be brought up. Leather jackets are not my style but like you said if you keep them plain they can work for the 40+ crowd.
I agree! Keep it simple.
Nice review.
Love the styles, but being 6'2" the website is not exactly designed for me ;(
You should do a video on getting your shoes shined or the color lightened or darkened!!!!
Thanks for the suggestion!
Check out The Elegant Oxford. He posts videos about everything there is to know about shoe finishes, mirror shines, applying patina, the best shoe care products etc. You can send shoes to him for a patina job or anything else. You won’t believe the beauty of his work.
Thank you for your inspiration.
Thank you for watching!
How do you feel about a 48 man wearing dress vest with jeans?
What can a guy in South Florida where when it's 90 degrees outside in order to look a little dressier?
Where did you get that great jean jacket
Right boss
Nice work john l love it
Thank you!
@@40OverFashion Thank you for the quick and thoughtful response. Take care
What do you recommend for wearing a trench coat or longer jacket as a short guy? I usually look like I'm wearing a dress when i use long coats :(
I like button.enclosure leather jacket and I'm.50. This vid had zip leather jacket?
Great video!
Thank you Mike!
How did PMNYC let you get away without talking about their Field Jacket?Just Kidding, great video.
Haha! I don’t know. Is it a good one?
@@40OverFashion It's a great fall/spring jacket for the Carolinas. Not sure about Southern California.
Like the style. Thanks
Thank you!
What brand puffer jacket is that?
Who made the Puffer Jacket you shared in your video?
Great Channel John, love your take on men's fashion, by the way if you dyed your hair you would look about 34, you look well for your age sir!
Thank you!
The price of leather jackets can be all over the place. Keep looking my friend!
40 Over Fashion I’m going to get a nice leather bag first lol I don’t wear jackets that often so a nice bag is a little more important. But I am definitely going to keep looking!!
Many thanks Siri 🙏😘😍🌷
