    Hello Auto Knight,
    Enjoyed your video on condenser replacement as I had cooling fan failure on my car (and condenser was failing aprart.....grrr).
    NOTE: I do not recommend the after market headlamp modules. My ForTwo had slight accident and body shop replaced with no OEM/smart unit and it failed internally within a year. I work nights and got pulled over by the police for headlamp issue non-compliance (projector was loose inside housing and bouncing up/down).
    Keep on the videos! Very informative and relaxing.

    I really enjoy your videos! I have a 2008 Smart Fortwo Cabrio that needs to be repainted and all the body shops are making a Big deal about taking all the panels off and want to charge me 10 grand USA to repaint. 4 different body shops all quoted me the same price Im shocked. I would just buy new panels if I could get them in the USA. Unfortunatley Mercedes can only order 2 colors now white or silver panels in the USA .

    • @autoknight747
      @autoknight747  Рік тому +1

      Thank you! 10k is crazy money to repaint the panels on such a small car. I’d take them off myself and deliver the panels to the body shop. I’d expect to pay just a few hundred here but that’s with mates rates. Maybe check eBay overseas and import some panels. The only downside is that they can be a bit difficult to ship. They come up on eBay in the UK from time to time.

      I had a bit of a performance getting the right o-rings so I can’t be sure on the final correct part numbers. There are different sizes from Smart and due to the low cost it’s prob best to order all variations to be sure to have the right ones.

    In my case the radiator fan is really noisy/loud, Can I replace only the fan? Or is it one piece with the radiator? And do I have to (let) drain the AC system?

    • @autoknight747
      @autoknight747  11 місяців тому +2

      The fan generally comes with the cowling that it is built into. Access is incredibly tight and I can’t think of a way to remove the fan without the radiator, in order to separate the two. The ac condenser has to be removed to access the radiator so the refrigerant would need to be reclaimed and recharged following the job. The two o-rings should be changed when refitting the ac pipes to the condenser.

    Hi Mate
    Quick question on my 451
    I was fiddling around fixing a damaged under tray today and noticed that the radiator surround appears to be fixed to the front plastic chassis by one T35 screw but that screws into a plastic shaft on the radiator housing which then means the bottom of the radiator housing is allowed to move 20mm or so when the screw is tight.
    Is there a missing part or spring as this doesn't appear normal. I would have expected the radiator housing to be firmly fixed to the plastic sub chassis.
    Any help you can give, most appreciated 😎

    Silly question but how do you know when you need to replace the condenser?

    • @autoknight747
      @autoknight747  Рік тому

      Corrosion, damage or a hole allowing the refrigerant to escape to the atmosphere. Dye can be added during the recharge process and this can then be seen with a UV lamp if there’s a leak. There are also leak detector wands that sniff for gas and alert of leakage.

    Can I use this same process of removal of the front body to change the radiator fan? I need to change out my radiator fan and I’ve never done this before so I’m trying to figure out how to remove all the front body parts.

    • @autoknight747
      @autoknight747  Рік тому +1

      Yep you’d need to do a very similar strip down but with a little bit more to get the radiator unit out.

  • @L44TXF
    @L44TXF Рік тому

    How did you diagnose the radiator as the issue ?

    • @autoknight747
      @autoknight747  Рік тому +2

      It is very corroded and there is a fracture where the receiver drier is held to the core. It wasn’t worth risking a re-gas going straight into the sky! As part of the recharge process we pull a vacuum and perform a hold test but in reality I’ve had systems hold a vacuum but then still lose gas when recharged. PAG oil with UV dye is added when re-gassing to enable leaks to be detected with a lamp and there are also leak detector sensors, like a wand, that can pinpoint a problem area.

    • @L44TXF
      @L44TXF Рік тому

      Just inspected mine and found out that I have the same issue. Looking to replace my condenser similar to yours.
      Any tips when finding the part ?
      I’ve found the same one you got from AUTODOC for £80.13.
      Any reason why you went with a 12mm core instead of 16?

    • @autoknight747
      @autoknight747  Рік тому

      @@L44TXF I spent a long time cross referencing part numbers to reach the right conclusion to order the correct part. Firstly I measured the condenser to identify its dimensions, including the depth. I also found a genuine part on eBay being sold by a dealer and gave my registration, which deemed it compatible, therefore giving me the genuine part number which could be cross checked on Autodoc.

    My car has developed a grumbling sound whrn ac is turned on. Emanating from the left front area under the dash. Could this be the compressor? I was thinking the radiator fan, but the dealer said it could be the compressor?? That doesn't make sense.

    Watches this video to find, that, though technically possible, I won't do it. Smart 451 is the most expensive and complicated car in my inventory in terms of repairs and maintenance (ant the rest of my cars are Mercs) due to it's compactness. Just got my front springs changed, and it also required nearly full front disassembly.
