Retro-fitting Glovebox - Smart Fortwo 451 Passion 84 BHP 2008
In this video I retro-fit a glovebox to the dashboard of my 2008 Smart Fortwo Passion 84 BHP Turbo 451. This involves removal of radio surround trim, removal of head unit, lower dash trim, crash protection polystyrene blocks and various other items in order to access the required bolts/screws. I fit a complete glovebox including the backing/housing, the frame and the lockable lid. I demonstrate how the lid can be removed and refitted by sliding the plastic hinge pins. The existing key will not fit the lock barrel however a replacement which is compatible with the vehicle's key is available from Mercedes-Benz/Smart dealer.
I also demonstrate how to remove the sticky residue that can occur on soft touch trim surfaces by using isopropyl alcohol and a microfibre cloth on the radio volume button.
Back in 2008, a glovebox was an optional extra on all models - Pure, Pulse, Passion & Brabus for GBP20, as detailed in the brochure/price list from that time.
The following parts were used:
Complete glovebox - Supplied by Jordan Coon, telephone number 07586 872867 (United Kingdom) +44 7586 872867 (Calls from outside UK)

Save money with DIY windscreen/windshield wiper fitment! In this video I replace the worn, noisy and smearing wiper blades on my BMW 330D E90 from 2009. The wiper rubbers are hard and have lost their flexibility and ability to clear the screen effectively. This will be a very similar job on E91/E92/E93 and note this car has the earlier design with the plastic cover at the wiper blade/wiper arm ...

In this video I fix a major oil leak on this 2009 BMW 330D E90 fitted with the N57 3.0 straight six diesel engine. This oil leak had been an MOT advisory for several years. The engine under tray had become saturated with oil and this was dripping onto the driveway and leaving oil patches. I replaced the engine oil filter housing/oil cooler gasket and o-ring, also carrying out a coolant change i...

you're posts are brilliant and a god send
Have you managed to cut the grass with it yet?
Can I use engine oil as gear oil.
Funniest yet Stephen.. Keep up the good work.
After replacing the fuel pump in my 2006 Jeep grand cherokee laredo 3.7 WK- Im now having a problem with a vapor lock and my new pump is making a ringing/humming noise off and on-is there a way to fix it with a inline check valve or inline filter of some sort. I have to release pressure on the fuel rail to re-crank it after it runs for more than 20 minutes/ which is a possible fire risk.
I have the same problem with my 110 68 plate with still less than 1000 miles on the clock going to change my pump now. Thanks for putting this video up
I was the first one at a red traffic light on a two-lane road and a car pulled up next to me in the left lane. I noticed that cars behind me all lined up behind that car, 3 or 4 cars. There were no left turns further along. Of course they all thought "That Smart goes slow so we are faster on the left". I had already noticed that the man in the car next to me was very busy with his phone. So when the light went green I accelerated hard and I took off like a rocket. I saw the cars in the other lane honking and signaling. Losers, haha! btw I live in a 'right hand side drive' country.
THANK YOU SIR ----- IF YOU PLACE A SCREEN IN FRONT RADIATEUR AT 5 CM , IT IS REALY BETTER . ----- GOOD VIDEO -- GOOD EXPLAIN ---- MERCI BEAUCOUP POUR VOTRE AIDE .
Gear oil is also 10w30
Hi; following a complete battery recharge, I now have those 3 lines & the car won't start???? Any ideas? No problems with the engine beforehand!
p.s. mine is a 2011 cdi.
First thing to try - foot on brake, turn key to ignition position (without starting). Keep foot on brake and you will hear the clutch actuator clunking and clicking. You may have to hold it there a while for this to happen. This process can perform a reset.
Wow... that's a big thing. And lots of work... lots screws.. BTW nice to see those details of the heating. You never see this, it just works (did not know how). My 2008 451 fortunately has this already. I use it for my Garmin Route planner and car paperwork. Very well explained how to do this (like all your video's) Well done and thanks.. I have a subscription to Evilution and they do talk about this with pictures. But no voice over nor video's 🙂 A bit slurred, but that's OK... LOL
And now the 11 things I love my Samrt. I know you just love 'm. Watched all your videos and are a member of Evilution and one of those specia manual books. Understeer... I put wider tyres under them. 155 front gone to 175 and rear to 195, makes a serious differance. Working on them... soo glad we have a Smart Specialist here nearby. It's mostly the plastic. Already changed my brakeswitch and the rubber engine mount. And rubber bushings front squeek Reliability... soo glad I went from 450 with turbo to my Smart 451 now, with Mitsubishi engine. Roadrage.. yes... Even my wife with her bigger Toyota iQ has this problem. Lastly one Audi was roadreaging behind her like mad, with middlefingers and headtoutcing. I looked at her dashcam footage andnoticed that she slowed down for an older pedestrian at a pedestriancrossing. That made them (her) rage. very very weird. Yes.. She and I have front and rear dashcams. If they tailgate me I try to slow down. And allways .. allways are passed at our 50 km/hr road (a long strech of asfalt).. when I drive 55. Anyways I love my Smart, mostly used for transporting my little Dachshund to the forest. Bigger Suzuki for the bigger trips with the wife.. 😅
Thank you for your support! Yes the road rage thing is for real. There are some angry people out there.
@@autoknight747 Friday afternoon is here the worst. They want to get home...fast. My dashcam once had these guys (on Friday afternoon) throwing trash out of the right window / cleaning their van. And almost hitting a woman on het bike. I stopped in front of them to confront them but they waved it away.."whatsjagannadoo".. So I showed dashcam-footage to the police and they phoned there boss. It was a company truck with the company name on it. Police called me later. Dashcams are the best we can do. Fun fact: In Germany it is forbidden to have a dashcam...but footage is allowed to be used in court / as evidence. You have a nice day.
Perhaps it's bit late to say; I'm guessing the fuel tap was Ewarts, as you mentioned the cork will dry out and will not seal and leak. If you undo the screw very carefully because it's brass so very easy to ruin it. Pull the plunger out of the main tap and put the plunger bit with cork in boiling water for 30 seconds, should be enough to replenish the cork and before putting it back, you can apply little bit vaseline or baby oil on the cork and it should work fine for another few years and when it dries, you can repeat the process. Blades don't need to be very sharp, the height of it is critical, I can see that, it can be lowered little bit more. If you want sharpen, use a single cut file. Hope this helps, good luck.
Great video. I am going to fit a set to my Smart Car for two 451 2009. Would yo be able to disclose who you use for your genuine parts?
Thank you! I buy my new genuine parts from MB/Smart dealer. For used parts see details in description. I also use Autodoc for big savings on OE spec branded components.
Thank you
Today I had this same problem in Halfords car park when I went to buy wiper blades for it. Exactly how you described it it happened. I was just about able to bring it home. I'm thinking to myself if I should drop a Honda 1.6 out of a crx (non VTEC) in it or not. Too many electronics will eventually turn into a Jinn with a honda I KNOW this will never happen again, plus it's already a130 bhp and I have EVERYTHING. It should go like the brabus after tuning, but without spending an additional £1k+ for mapping the engine and the gearbox plus the cost of fixing this jinn. Summer is here and if I do, guys will make a video on how to.
What kind of grease did u use ?
Very good instructional vid. However, it's worth pointing out, that using air from a tyre to create the pressure to replace brake fluid, is NOT a good idea, as air in the tyre has water vapour in it. And this will defo rust the brake pipes.
Thank you! That’s a very theoretical. I have a wheel and tyre that I keep especially for this purpose and is inflated with a foot pump. I have used this method outside of the workshop environment since the 90s with no issues. Have you seen how much water gets periodically drained off from a dealer workshop compressor? I was always surprised at the quantity!
You, sir, are an absolute life saver! Thank you so much for your amazing content. It is all very professional, and the tips throughout the video are gr4eat as well. I've actually taken notes as if I were in a class lol. Thanks again!
No criticism from me. I would like to point out, however, one thing. You can easily change the number plate bulbs without removing the panel. No tools required either. It takes seconds.
Mine is leaking from the back of the car through the window
neighbour just been quoted £1000 to do this job with a secondhand axle.
Nice. Is it possible to change the radio panel to a funky touch panel, GPS? 👍
To be fair I will very rarely deviate from original equipment but with the correct adaptations, most things are possible. There are numerous aftermarket options.
Is it worth lifting the front suspension when its out
Personally I wouldn’t mess with the ride height. I’m a strong advocate for keeping things original.
Hey how are you? Hope all is well. I’ve done everything on youtube and nothing has worked. Can you suggest anything?
Hey, all good! That’s a difficult one. I wonder if US cars have a different procedure. There are a few items that seem to differ from European vehicles. Hard to say without seeing the car. I’m back in the US again later in the year but it’ll be California which probably isn’t much help!
@@autoknight747 🤣🤣im in NY. Its all good. I have to do my oil change soon. Maybe the mechanic can figure it out. Thanks for the response
@@IHYDRO718I Yes I remember! One day I’ll visit NY. All I would say on the procedure is that you have to do the whole sequence pretty damn quickly. Good luck with it!
@@autoknight747 Thanks again my friend.
Just started stripping my smart 450 project, mine has rot on every point mentioned in this video. the rear arches are the worst. however in addition, the front wheel arches have some rot around the lip, both sides. Worst of all is the slam panel, that is heavy rotted, thankfully also easy to replace.
Done similar, however I've run mine through the bulkhead grommet and the connector sits near the washer fluid tank. Saves having to have a window/door open to charge
have those shocks now for about 60k miles, their ok but the dust boot constantly scuffs on the shock body stripping the paint away
Ich habe in meinem Smart nur den Rahmen mit Deckel eingebaut, funktioniert sehr gut. Deine Methode ist natürlich besser, einfach perfekt 👍 Viele Grüße, Jürgen
Looks well. Good tip about the paint
Little thing, big difference. 👍
Thank you very much, very good video 👍
Perfect, so I don't need to loosen the front bumper as many other tecs have stated. Thanks!
So satisfying seeing all the trim panels being clipped back into positions ! Great video as always
I just got a smart 451 cabrio about 2 monts ago and I have fell in love with it. I have been watching your videos now and must say, they are brilliant! Very informative and on point. Keep it up man! Greetings from Finland.
Another nice video. I would be interested to carry out this mod but would consider just adding the frame and lid. You say it's easier to fit the whole unit could you explained why as I would think just fitting the frame into position and drilling the box and. Fitting the frame and lid seems much easier unless I'm missing a majour something.. Thanks, Brendan. 👍
You’d need to remove the existing housing anyway in order to get it on a bench to mark out and drill for the locating dowels and screw holes, so I just figured it easier to bypass that step and buy the unit complete. The outcome will likely be similar!
Thanks for your sharing. I just wonder that maybe you could exchange a Android monitor to replace the original one.
I'm going to London this July, maybe I can bring some equipment you need for free to you.
How to demonstrate the condition of your engine mounts !
Welcome back. I always admire your superb editing.
Thank you - it’s appreciated!
Brilliant thanks I don't need to do this but it's good to see what's involved
I have a facelift 451 the dash seems to be one solid bit, any ideas how to remove a climate control..?
Hi thanks for your video I had same problem in winter car door was fine then when it came summer time it wouldn't lock .only at night when it was cooler it worked so I bought a second hand locking mechanism changed it now its fine works perfectly...
Exactly like mine! I’m sure I’ll be fitting a lock once the weather warms up again.
I’m no mechanic by far ,but would the spray not make it a-little brittle ? Great video ,thanks for doing it
I don’t think the cooling was sufficient to render it brittle. The idea behind this is just for the glow plug to be cooler than the cylinder head to provide for contraction.
My heart was going lol
Those electrical connectors are a right sod to unplug! How did you make it look so easy? 🙂 My wife's car has the same engine and when I replaced the sensor, the earth pin didn't make contact and gave all sorts of odd effects. When you reconnect it, make sure all four contacts are in place. Cheers!
Nice Video, straight to the point(s), not too much blabla, good source of information! Regards from Germany
