    7:33 is an Australian Ford Falcon XL model wagon from about 1962 or 1963. A divergenge from American versions and diverged more with each new model. Rare survivor.

    The american stuff is mostly what you would expect to find at any carshow here in Sweden too, but the down-undery-stuff is utterly alien to me and therefore very fascinating to see. Very much looking forward to see what your Australian leg of the adventure will bring!

    That Escort Estate just made a memory pop up in my head, my dad had one of them in that colour!!! Can't recall if it was two-door like that or four (I was maybe 3 or 4 years old at the time, so around 1988-89), but I do remember that the drivers window often fell off the track as it was being wound up, and needed assistance to guide it up the doorframe... :P

    Hi Hubnut. On the Ford 351, it refers to the engine capacity in cubic inches. The usual parlance with American V8's is to say Three Fifty-One, or Two Eighty-Three or Four Twenty-Seven as the case may be. The exception occurs if a zero is in the middle and you then say Three Oh Two or Four Oh Eight as the case may be. And there may still be exceptions, but you'll get into little strife if using this rule. There's less of a rule book with Australian sixes however. At one time Falcons had a One-Seventy and Holdens a One Seven Nine. Hope you're travelling well. Cheers.

    • @johnd8892
      @johnd8892 4 роки тому +1

      Amazingly the Ford 351 is really 352 cubic inches. The reason for the change in labelling is that Ford already had produced from the 50s for a few years a Ford Y block V8 352 with the same 4 inch bore and 3.5 inch stroke as the later 351. Seems Ford did not want any confusion between the two motors. Might be a few other motors like this where a better sounding name was chosen. Ford 427, 428 and 429 may have been some of them.

    A veritable fleet of classics, a feast for the eyes. I especially liked the Citroen traction Avant. There's a car dealer in Crewe who owns a very fine example. A real road test? now that wouldn't go amiss. The Cambridge A50, reminding me of the A40 Somerset and the delightful, (to me) Lincoln Continental. minus the rear porthole style windows. Well I couldn't be happier. Very enjoyable.

    Noticing the Ferrari there reminded me of an article I read last week about a Kiwi who found a damaged Ferrari with a broken V12 in a field.
    Rather than fixing the V12 he did the rather obvious thing and swapped it for the Mazda Rotary Engine.
    He has since received a Cease and Desist order from Maranello.
    He has said he just wants to be friends. 🤣

      If he fitted one of the Pulse Performance quad rotary engines (pulseperformance.co.nz/) (Whanganui, NZ) then it would be faster than the original Ferrari motor.
      Why do you think that rotary's are so popular here ? :-)
      "A Wanganui mechanic has achieved a world first by building an engine that Mazda New Zealand didn't think was possible.
      Warren Overton, along with colleagues Gareth Lewis, Vaughn Campbell and Ben Simkin, took five months to build the first 2000hp, six rotor engine for a friend's car."

    Lovely to see the Mazda RX3. My dad had one here in the uk around about 1973, it was pretty fast for its day. Just restocked my bonus points only to be giving them away again due to more excellent rotary content, the Rx-3 and the rotary ute (or REPU to give it's correct designation) Rotary Engine Pick Up). US only issue and produced 1974 thru 1977. B series ute with 13b rotary power. Mazda was heavily invested in rotary engines during this period. There was a small bus (13b powered Parkway) and a deal with GM got Holden Premier bodies shipped from Oz to Japan and endowed with 13b rotary power. (1976-77). Both JDM only.

    Those aren't just motorbikes, those appear to be Chinese CJ to BMW conversions! The nicest thing one can do for one of those...
    Quick and dirty primer on CJ, made with worn out Ural tooling that was given to USSR by Germany in the late 30's as part of a non-aggression pact, that obviously failed, and used by them to make the M72 from WW2 until 1957 then sold to the PRC and used in China until the '90's. CJ also came up with their own overhead valve engine that was almost as primitive.

    I had an Austin J4 van in 1978 to 1980 Got it with the floor rotted out at the back and welded it up using some angle iron from an old bed frame, they passed it on the MOT, I replaced it with an Austin EA van which was a bit like a bigger version with a 2.2 diesel and twin wheels at the rear.

    The Ford at 1:19 is a Falcon GT four door. This is the XB version produced from 1973 to 1976. All XB GTs had the 351 V8 and there was a two door hardtop pillar less coupe version, that for the next XC model formed the basis of the Max Max movie car. Not being a highly developed race special like the 1971 Falcon XY GT HO phase 3, these later GTs are much more affordable but still get big money.

      Minor correction: the Max Max movie car wasn't an XC, it was an XB GT with custom lights. It's still around too, in a museum in Florida.

    The Transit van at 11:36 is likely to be the Australian production version with the extended nose to accommodate the Falcon 250 cubic inch (or 4.1 litre) . More accepted by commercial users seeking more torque and less maintenance that the stressed fours and V4s that the Transit used when introduced here. Six and nose was later introduced. Did Europe do the extended nose or was it Australia and NZ only?

    At 3:32 you came across what you called a Ford GT. Really a 1971 XY model Ford Falcon GT or the GT HO Phase 3. More likely GT or lesser model cloned up to be the Falcon GT HO Phase 3. If it was genuine HO Phase 3 and in good condition it could be around $1 million from recent auction results. Even a bad one would get $250,000 or so. Australia's 145 mph Bathurst special. All based on the XY Falcon in Fairmont or better trim level with a Ford 351 V8 ,usually a Cleveland version, of 352 cubic inches as a Bathurst special. But not a lot of people know the 352 story.
    A very significant car in Australia. Probably the most iconic apart from cars made in handful numbers.

    Just a slight correction: the top of the line Holden was actually the Caprice not the Statesman, at least between 1990 and 2017. Between 1971 and 1984 the Statesman WAS the top of the line long wheelbase Holden, but it ceased production between 1984 and 1990, when Holden finally got around to building a LWB luxury version of the Commodore. Both Statesman and Caprice were built between 1990 and 2010, but the Statesman was a lower spec model during those years.
    Interestingly, the Caprice name came from Chevrolet. My dad actually owned a 1967 Chevrolet Caprice Estate which was quite a rare car in NZ in the 1980's but sadly it lay unrestored in the back yard for years and was finally sold off cheap to a guy who walked in off the street. It was a full 9 seater wagon with a 3rd row of seats. I always wonder what happened to that car, if it ever got the restoration it deserved. I was hoping to spot it in this video, as the car ended up in the northern suburbs of Auckland, from what I remember. I saw it once in the Albany wreckers yard, not that far from Kumeu. I'm also sure I saw it again, back on the road in Milford, "running and driving", covered with primer, so that gave me hope that somebody had put some work into it.

      @aftonline 4 роки тому

      @@ayrproductions I never saw heard of a Holden Caprice in NZ until the 90s, and the information I quoted above about the Caprice starting in 1990 was from Wikipedia. I am also aware of a Brougham model in the late 60s and early 70s but that was replaced by the Statesman in 73 to my knowledge.

    • @aftonline
      @aftonline 4 роки тому

      @@ayrproductions My mistake yes it was 1971, the same year that the HQ entered production. It seems the Caprice name was used for the South African versions of this car but those were badged as Chevrolets. Not to be confused with the Chevrolet Caprice sold in America which was a luxury version of the Impala, a completely different and bigger car than the Australian designed Caprice.
