New Zealand really is a beautiful country, i can see why my uncle and aunt emigrated to there back in the 70's. I would love to live there. The UK these days just seems such a mess compared to a country like New Zealand.
It was OK for your relatives...nowadays its really expensive..got an average million bucks for an Auckland house...or Wellington..big earthquake in Christchurch..go to a local supermarket and cry..no Lidl or Aldi here..then youl realise how expensive it is to get back to the UK...im in NZ just now..yeah its cool..but grass is never greener...
This is where im from. Houses in Invercargill, the city he left from are about 2/300,000. And thats NZ $$ so barely touching 150,000 pounds. If someone is attracted to this beauty ( bottom of South Island NZ) why would you give a price for a house in the most populated city at the top of the North Island? Of course the grass is greener....it literally is
Left unchecked, those Kea's will have every rubber strip pulled from your car. So glad you made it to Milford, well worth the effort. That road is epic. Wanaka is gorgeous, quieter than Queenstown.
Something I've done many times, pushing on to somewhere you 'need to see' and putting yourself miles and hours behind. Despite saying you wouldn't we always do and good in you. Only chance you'd have to see it so why not you're on holiday too. Great road trip video for us all to see so thank you 👍😁
Less haste will improve all things on this trip - quality not quantity is what counts. Having said that what you have shown us so far, including Milford Sound, is convincing me that a trip to NZ is a must. The scenery and the lack of people and traffic are exactly what I want in life as a tourist - if only I could tolerate the plane journey ! Keep well Ian.
Ahh the forgetting the prescription sunglasses are on when going thru the Homer Tunnel, been there, done that. One time I rode thru to Milford on my Suzuki Intruder. Not that easy really as the 'truder petrol tank is really only for show holding only enough petrol for a bit over 100 miles, great way to enjoy the view however, got to the tunnel went straight thru forgetting I had my sunglasses on (you didn't wait in those days & there was two way traffic) great could not see much, the tiny wee headlight not the most efficient. About halfway in a camper van was coming the other way, I could see very little to start with, even less then plus the tunnel floor less than smooth against the wall what with stones & rubble - bit of a sphincter tightener 😅😅
Love the video! And of course the perfect cruising vehicle.....the mighty AU Fairmont Series 2. I have a Series 1 Fairmont wagon and a Series 2 XR6. LONG LIVE THE MIGHTY AU !
Ian, i wonder if anyone has ever said "a Kea was eating my Kia when i was in Ikea" The perfect video to watch while having a munch at lunchtime. Glad to hear you're taking a bit of time for yourself, always put that first! Like the ceiling in your place of stay, oh , and keep away from that volcano:¬}
I did this in a rental Corolla (with a manual gearbox!!!) and we were late to a tour boat booking. I got official permission from her to “get on it” and she dutifully stayed quiet. She’s a keeper :) Oh yes, amazing road!!
Usually haunt Wanaka, Queenstown and Arrowtown every year particularly for day trip roadtrips. It's killing me I couldn't this year, but these videos are a great consolation prize
Great video done in the style that could only be Hubnut. Highlights for me are the tunnel & parrot. Views are stunning & it shows how special N Z really is. Yet another place I would love to visit. Thanks so much Ian for documenting your continuing adventures really brightens a dull winters morning here in the UK.
Thanks for everything time for feet up and a brew with a few chocolate hob nobs. Your parrot was the best. I thought Queenstown reminded me of Windermere well the shore line at least.
Wonderful video Ian must be tough remembering to drive with that scenery all around. Absolutely classic cheeky parrot footage. Reminds me of touring Longleat in my Camry behind a nice Rover 416 which was having its sunroof seal peeled slowly and left dangling down the driver's window by a Baboon. Thank you so much for blasting that gloriously sweet straight 6 a couple of times. The last time I saw a Nissan Sunny estate like that was at school in 1984 in a lovely metallic chocolate brown. Tyres made of cheese in the corners, man you are a poet. No doubt young Hubnut's cradle needed no rocking that night. Thank you again. Classic. Top Man.
Thank you Mr Hubnut. This is exactly the video I was hoping you would do . I am so sorry it caused you so much trouble later. I understand a lot of what you went through., having been in that frame of mind myself. I visited a lot of the places in this video in 2012, so it brought back many happy memories of that time Thanks again.
Thanks for another fantastic video of your trip. As you mentioed before Invercargill was featured in the film "Goodbye Pork Pie" (1981). I remember another NZ road film it was called "Shaker Run" (1985) filmed around south island and Wellington. Anyone else remember it ?
Epic views, proper lord of the rings country! You sounded knackered! Your little rest from filming was much needed I reckon. Also, that bird is so cute!
Many many years ago i spent a night in Milford Sound ( with my Father ) the whole night thunder and lightning almost all night long non stop very high rain fall at Milford Sound, on another occasion Dad had used a phone booth ( which by the way was one of very few phones ) seconds after he had used the phone booth lightning hit it and blew it away! Best not to overtake the coaches, they travel quite quickly best just to let them go! The Earnslaw ( steam ship ) was originally part of the New Zealand Railways network, because NZR could not put a railway line thru to Queenstown so the 'Kingston Flyer' would bring passengers and some freight to Kingston at the Southern end of the lake, the Earnslaw would meet the train and take them the rest of way. The cable car at Queenstown are gondolar,s not cable cars. The boilers on the Earnslaw are very similar to those on the AB steam locomotives, for ease of repair i guess because there many AB loco,s about.
After a stressful heltic day at work in the freezing cold, there's nothing better than escaping for half an hour watching Hub Nut. Many thanks Ian for sharing your great vlogs!!
Gosh that was a wonderful treat, thank you Mr H. One spectacular view after another, and those remote non-populated areas really are something special. I'm sure you will never forget this amazing trip.
Spectacular from beginning to end. From the old buildings in Invercargill, to the mountains and lakes throughout the rest of the journey. thanks for posting
Lovely Jubbly Mr HubNut, I think New Zealand excelled itself this video, keep repairing yourself and we'll all look forward to another great video soon.
Hey Hubnut, thanks for taking the time to share your wonderful adventures. NZ is a fantastic place indeed, it;s been some 30 plus years since I holidayed there, you've bought back so many fond memories. Keep up the good work, look after yourself mate!
As soon as I saw the Kea...I knew your car was from then on property of Kea and therefore under the directive of his destruction...Keas LOVE a good tearing of antennas, wiperblades, and weather stripping.
Honestly speechless with this country it's like one moment it reminds of Greece then then parts of the UK then you're in Alps unbelievable really has been one of my goals to visit I'm definitely convinced now
Great video Ian, and a priviledge to be sharing your travels with you. Great company when working from home. I hope you're enjoying a well earned rest.
Brings back happy memories of my road trip in New Zealand 17 years ago. We also over estimated how far it was to go to Milford Sound and back but it is so worth it. I'm suprised you didn't have a go at the go-karts at Queenstown at the top of that hill. Hope you are now feeling better and recharged ready to go again.
I grew up and raised kids in Invercargill. Interesting to see all these familiar places through fresh eyes. Those Keas tore every bit of rubber off my Fiat 128 at Treble Cone skifield in the 80's lol - while everyone stood around and took photos! Good work with the Maori pronunciations btw, a valiant effort. Cheers mate and kia kaha
Best video of the trip thus far Ian. I did recommend a drive to Milford Sound when in the planing stages, we were there in Feb this year! We took one of the pleasure cruise boat trips, amazing, one of the wonders of the world! Keep them coming Ian but all in your own time. Look after yourself, take care, all the very best!
Looks so much like Norway, but you really can‘t travel farther away on this planet. Keep up the good work, enjoy what you are doing - and do take care of yourself, mr Nut!
Tremendous... thanks Ian. Love that you film the “random” stuff that draws your attention. Also, Hubnut merch just arrived - Power Tee and mugs, Beanie and stickers ... Rachel (and George) do some of the most amazingly efficient packaging I’ve seen in a long time - Thank you ! Take good care all.
Thanks again Ian, as you rightly say you run a 'car channel' and that's why most of us are here watching your videos....But have to say New Zealand is stunning, and I'm really enjoying the scenery more than the cars to be honest!.....Anyway have a nice few days rest, you deserve it!....Take care.
Hi, I really enjoyed this took me back to my trip in 2016 to Australia & New Zealand but I know its a road trip but not to go on a boat trip on Milford Sound you missed so much and I was blown away by Queenstown could not put the camera (still) down kept taking snaps of the snow capped mountains and a trip on the steamer was great to. I did South Island on a coach trip and on the way to Milford the Kea's were much in attendance when we had to wait as they made it safe from avalanches and one of the other coaches waiting had there door open and a couple of them got on had a look and I can only assume did not like what they saw and promptly jumped of again so again thank you for the reminder and have a very Happy Christmas & New Year. Cheers Robert.
New Zealand is absolutely stunning Ian, total scenery overload, you are marvelling at one place and the next minute that has been surpassed. I'm the worlds worst for doing exactly what you did, I know I have to be somewhere but push on regardless in the opposite direction! The realise just how far I've when I have to backtrack. That's how you discover new places though. The more I see of New Zealand, the more I want to see it for myself.
You're driving around in paradise... It's so wonderful down there. Sometimes the landscape reminds of my homeland, between Lake Constance and the Allgäu mountains. But no Keas here in southern Germany; that's a pity...
I'm thinking that your experience with Betty and your exposure to the expanses of open country there ("desolation" as you called it) provides a pretty good explanation of how and why cars in the Aussie/Kiwi and North American markets have typically been bigger (and stouter) than, say, the Fiesta/Golf/Focus/Corsa cars that currently top the sales charts in England.
Wow, the scenery reminds me of Western Scotland - Oban up to Fort William and around there. They even have a PS Waverley equivalent albeit sans paddles. It seems in some ways more built up, but in others ways (traffic) less built up. I must pay a visit. Hope you can avoid the volcano eruptions, and the wildfires in Oz.
I enjoyed this little road trip with you! I first visited all those places on my honeymoon 32 years ago. Those keas!! One landed on my wing mirror and while i bent down to get my phone to take a pic, he tore a great chunk out of the door's rubber seal.
Wow, great to see your views of my part of the world. The first few videos I had seen from your channel was from those great classic British cars. No way I didn’t expect to see you exploring places that I have been to.
I could watch that road to Milford twisting and unfolding for hours - as you evidently did..... A candidate to join my - very short - list of the worlds most epic roads.
A beautiful video Ian - thanks for sharing. Love the scenery and the 'Earnslaw' with that gorgous counter stern (curvy rear end). Thoroughly enjoy your travel vids Ian, be they around fabulous Wales or somewhere in my even wilder dreams! And please grab me a Kea if you can - I'd love one. Take care - we love you, Teresa (who's stuck in the wet fens.)
Awesome and excellent video indeed. Really good "dash cam-like" views illustrating the roads, scenery and situation. Yes, you've got to do what you've got to do - when heading for Milford Sound, (at the time!) you've just got to keep going. It made good memories and great content, just hope you've rested yourself and re-charged your batteries. Best wishes, and keep up the good work.
I have a chronic condition and your videos help me tolerate my situation... Always enjoy your videos!
"What a pillock"
This is why everyone loves British car-related videos.
Agreed hes a tw,at
New Zealand really is a beautiful country, i can see why my uncle and aunt emigrated to there back in the 70's. I would love to live there. The UK these days just seems such a mess compared to a country like New Zealand.
That's mostly due to being grossly over populated.

This parrot isn't dead. This parrot was definitely pining for the Ford 😄.

Kea's are marvellous if you need good car strippers hire them.

Yes, I did most of the coast of Ireland in a weekend and it was a bit of a blur!

That big Ford just lopes along those deserted highways. You'll have a culture shock when you get back to the UK.
Wait till Ian gets to Australia, if he thinks those highways are deserted. ;-)
@das wright Breakdown in some of the Western suburbs of Sydney and it could be worse :-)
Watching your videos really makes us who are living here realise as Fred Dagg once said "We dont know how lucky we are"

And please don't apologise for wind, I rarely do!
Another feast for the eyes. Amazing, the contrasting landscapes. Special thanks for the moment the steamer departs.

Loved the boat ride through the Milford sound out to sea, very impressive. On the Hubnut scale: about a thousand wow's. And seals. Of approval.
Thanks for sharing Ian, you are bringing joy to thousands of quiet passengers along for the ride. You are not alone :-)
New Zealand just keeps delivering. WOW! indeed. Cheeky birds, spectacular scenery and a Morris Minor. Wonderful, Mr HubNut, thank you.

Kea - I was wondering about that bird - they are a species of large parrot. Spectacular scenery! 👍🏻
top draw stuff and the parrot was brilliant it was hard as nails it didnt care what so ever brilliant :)

Hi,
I really enjoyed this took me back to my trip in 2016 to Australia & New Zealand but I know its a road trip but not to go on a boat trip on Milford Sound you missed so much and I was blown away by Queenstown could not put the camera (still) down kept taking snaps of the snow capped mountains and a trip on the steamer was great to. Beautiful scenery New Zealand looks like a nice country
The vistas are just staggering, beautiful countryside. That bird was pretty cool too. Enjoying the adventure! Hope you are more relaxed now
Nothing beats a large six cilinder car on long distances.
I really hope you get to read this Ian. In 2000 I lent my daughter money (she repaid me) to go to NZ. In this video you've shown me what she saw.
Amazing stuff Ian, must be filling the bonce with more memories than you can handle.
Def a WoW spectacular scenery yet again..fantastic views, possibly Lotr filming locations.
Thanks Dr Dolittle..sorry Ian, great video as always.
You're driving around in paradise... It's so wonderful down there. Sometimes the landscape reminds of my homeland, between Lake Constance and the Allgäu mountains. But no Keas here in southern Germany; that's a pity...
Yes, I enjoyed Lake Constance this summer. Lovely area.
So are Invacars made in Invercargill by any chance?

Great to be on board your epic journey. Love the ford with its big 90's bubble buttons!
Nice film Ian, no wonder you had a melt down, you must have been knackered. Nice that you're feeling more yourself.
TOP QUALITY SCENERY . thanks for a great day out !!!
Absolutely beautiful! I'm looking forward to your next installment already. Most importantly though, kick back & enjoy your days off!
Wow! Milford Sound looks spectacular alright. I think I shall have to put a visit on my bucket list 🙂

These Keas are well known to pull the door weather strips , aerials etc off the vehicle
Beat me to it, they will destroy a car, given the chance.
Keas particularly like shiny items ie chrome and take great delight in throwing them away they pick up items with their beak.
That's why I didn't let it get away with it for too long!
This is the best episode so far IMO
Excellent video with magnificent scenery. I feel like I'm experiencing with you. Hope you are feeling better now.
