    Armin Navabi, Jeremy of Aurora Creative Media, and I went to Ramallah, Palestine recently and asked Palestinians what they think about atheists and atheism. Would they be friends with an atheist? Would they love and accept an atheist family member? Would they accept an apostate? Do morals only come from god? Although most, if not all our interviewees were Muslim, the responses definitely varied a bit. I hope you learned something! I know I did.

    Finally addressing this: The boys in the video are not and were never endangered by this video, and in fact asked not to have their faces blurred. Their faces were blurred purely to respect the laws regarding filming minors in Israel in Palestine. It was to protect my crew alone. One of the boys was in contact with me even after the video came out and was happy with the result. They come from a safe home. I’m sorry I didn’t address this sooner. There has never been a safety issue here.

      The smartest people to ever exist were either scientists or atheists. Religion will eventually be wiped out in a few hundred years. I don't even blame you, people like you have been brainwashed since childhood and been less exposed to science and reality. My fear is how racist Islam is towards black people. The Africans travelling towards Europe are captured and sold in Slave auctions.
      I saw a young man on a UA-cam video of an auction, he couldn't have been more than 18years old. He was sold for 800 dollars.

Most Spanish-speaking countries have a word to describe people with fairer features (the word itself differs from country to country, but they all generally mean blondie/White), and they’re pretty misleading. @erni muja people who say that are very wrong to think islam is the most random religion. clearly, and far from what individual governments do nowadays, islamic laws have conditions that should be met before punishment are made (of course i don't believe in any of this, but i guess we should correct the false ideologies before we can condemn a religion).
      for example, if someone steals something, the islamic law says they should have their hands cut, but that isn't an equivalence rule, it's a trial, there should be witnesses, proof that the person stole something he could easily access (that mean poor people shouldn't be affected by this), and thats just the tip of the iceberg.
      most people think that a punishment is the equivalent of an act of immoral deed, and that's absolutely wrong. and let's not even dive in the "a true islamic society should be conditioned by several factors", like based on islamic countries nowadays, none of them actually fits the conditions of being able to work under islamic law. which means, nowadays all effort to bring that law (or the equivalent sharia) is nothing but an oppressive tool used by people in control to dominate their societies (exactly what happens in countries like Saudi Arabia, Iran and such)

    Great video, man. Thanks for doing this. It's heartening to see evidence for the breakdown of the polarised views we are so regularly exposed to. I was in Thailand many years ago and there was an Israeli woman on a boat trip. She asked me where I was from. When I told her I was from Ireland, she said "Oh, that place full of terrorists". This has always struck me as evidence of the strength of etic perceptions of 'the other', while she was likely drawing parallels between Northern Ireland and Palestine. It's sad that people don't question the status quo more, but good to see there may be light at the end of the tunnel. Or at the very least a dimmer switch. Cheers.

    5:46 huge mistranslation. What he actually said was that he can offer his “help” to his loved ones, but it’s none of his business to intervene if it’s just a friend or some random person. Not that he would intervene if it’s someone on the street and kill if it’s a family member. He said that he can give words of kindness to help guide his loved ones, not kill.

      @5:17 I can possibly see that the Palestine speaker is saying he would disown and dislike a family member that has "left the path" to the extent he would kill them in the sense of how much he would dislike them, not that he would actually kill them. It would be like someone saying to a father his son has done something wrong for the umpteenth time and the father reacting angrily and saying, "Wait until I get my hands on him. I am going to kill him". The father in most cases would mean the son is going to be punished severely. In general they are many reports of Muslims that have killed apostates, so in a non-Muslim culture they would assume that to be an answer for all Muslims.
      @5:50 I am not so sure. Is there an alternative on how to treat a family member that does leave Islam? And isn't disowning in a sense equivalent to death?
      Not that this is unique to Muslims, it is an Abrahamic thing. The Abrahamic religion teaches division and enforcement of that division. It seems to me if there is only one creator god, one "abba", there would be only one family, but what do I know, being an atheist.

    One problem with this video is the selection bias implicit in your method of choosing people for interview.
    I would argue the more moderate people were more likely to be willing to talk to you, a white, foreign, English speaking atheist, although they would likely assume that you were Christian.

    • @trebah662
      @trebah662 5 років тому

      @Veritas Nocet Et Foedari
      The statement "bias implicit in your method of choosing people for interview" isn't a lie as I didn't intend for it to be false. I would argue that there is selection bias implicit in his method of choosing people for interview and virtually every scientist would agree with me on that. Interviews on the street have strong selection bias no matter what.
      I'm not going into whether or not people in the middle East are white, but one thing that is true is that I was clearly using it to mean a light skinned western individual, distinct from somewhat darker skinned individuals from the middle East. This is semantics, an individual from Palestine can tell someone from the west apart from someone from Palestine.
      The reason why I assume that more moderate people were more likely to talk to him is because the more moderate members of most religious groups are typically more willing to openly discuss their religion. This is also reinforced partly because of the Korans specific intolerance towards non-believers and partly because of the potentially justified Palestinian tendency to view themselves as victims and westerners as colonizers or Zionists.
      I find your claim that I am a liar quite insulting so any evidence you could produce of that would be nice.

    • @trebah662
      @trebah662 5 років тому

      @Veritas Nocet Et Foedari I will respond to each paragraph in turn.
      1:
      I don't believe he was cherry picking, you have misunderstood what I was saying.
      2:
      Yes, street interviews are always affected by selection bias and this increases the more controversial the topic is, this is a fact. I have a background in developmental psychology and while we don't use street interviews, it's important for us to understand the massive issues with interviews and the implicit biases they suffer from. Most interviews, for example, suffer from social desirability bias as would this one.
      3:
      I said the tendency was potentially justified. None of my comments here have been political in nature but that one strayed far too close to the sun. I am happy to give you this point whether or not I agree with you.
      4:
      Yes, they have been. I said the tendency was potentially justified. See my response to 3

    • @trebah662
      @trebah662 5 років тому

      @Veritas Nocet Et Foedari I believe your misunderstanding may have come from my wording "choosing people for interview".
      While this is correct wording, it doesn't mean that he was choosing them this way consciously. It's selection bias that is inevitable for his method of choosing people, as well as a host of other biases such as social desirability

    • @trebah662
      @trebah662 5 років тому

      @Veritas Nocet Et Foedari You are still misunderstanding what I am saying.
      Science is man made as a whole, not just psychology.
      He is not choosing people who happen to be friendlier or more hostile intentionally, it's just a problem with his methods. Random street interviews are unscientific and naturally impacted by biases.
      I have been watching this person for quite some time and quite like him, this isn't a knock on him or his channel, just this video and more the people in the comment using it to back up their judgements of Palestine in any direction. The information gathered here is so tainted by biases that no scientist would use it.
      I'm sorry but you don't seem to have any idea what you are talking about and so this conversation is sort of over

    • @trebah662
      @trebah662 5 років тому

      @Veritas Nocet Et Foedari Street interviews have strong bias. There you go, that is a universally accepted fact within psychology. You can deny this but it's like denying gravity or evolution, it's been proven to beyond disagreement.

    I saw someone comment that “It’s Judah and Samaria, not “Palestine” and it irked me so rather than comment directly, I’m just going to leave this here:
    First off, it’s Judea and Samaria, not Judah and Samaria. Second, for the longest time it was referred to as Palestine. By the ancient Greeks, the Philistines who lived there. While the Philistines don’t have any relation to the Palestinians today, the name carried over all the way into the 1800s and 1900s with British Mandatory Palestine.
    Here’s the thing. I’m Jewish too. Israel is the Jewish homeland. But the reality is the Middle-East has been embroiled in so much conflict that it’s hard to tell who’s who and who should own what. I think Benjamin Netanyahu’s treatment of Palestinians is horrible. Palestine and Palestinians are not the enemy. They live there too. Terrorism is the enemy. Terrorism and terrorists are not and could never be synonymous with the term “Palestinian”. Anyone who says so is a racist. While it is a good thing that the Jews are living in their ancestral homeland, many people were uprooted. You can make the argument that the Palestinians living there should’ve gone back to Jordan or Egypt or their native countries in ‘48, and it is those countries’ fault because they refused to take them back, but the reality of the matter is that people are living there. They already had their life uprooted once.
    I don’t think with the way Benjamin Netanyahu is running Israel that a two-state solution would be feasible. He continues to be embroiled in corruption charges and bribery. He’s a crook. He’s a fascist. He’s incorrigibly racist
    Instead, I’d like to see an Israel where all Jews, regardless of whether or not they are Orthodox, are treated with respect and dignity, and the Orthodox stepping back and realizing they aren’t the most important people in the world. If it’s possible, I’d want to see a greater Israel where every Palestinian is given full Israeli citizenship, no strings attached. No caveats, no “buts”. Complete and total citizenship. I’d also implement stronger civil rights for Arabs. While Arab Israelis have full citizenship and many have served on the Knesset, they are still a minority and minority rights are important to me. I’d also want to see gay marriage legalized. While Israel recognizes and while foreign same-sex marriages are legal under Israeli law, it is not legal in Israel because the Orthodox rabbinate are pieces of shit and hold too much power, even if Israel isn’t a theocracy. I hope Israel’s constitution is strong enough to not let that happen. Just as a note, I’m not opposed in any way to a two-state solution. But if a one-state solution were to be the only way to achieve peace, that’s how I’d do it. But I’m not a pessimist and I do think a two-state solution after Netanyahu is out of power could happen. Netanyahu is just making it way harder.
    Also, we don’t need to separate men and women at the western wall. If women are distracting you from praying, you’re not doing it right. At my synagogue, we never believed Jews to be chosen. We remove all mentions of chosen-ness from our prayers. We add in our prayer for peace “And on the whole world” (v’al kol yoshvey tevel). We don’t even believe god is an actual being. God is something that’s inside us all. That idea of creation, that power is residual in all humanity. God is midi-chlorians. We invited a black pastor as a guest speaker after the shooting a few years ago at the COR church. We’ve invited Muslims to pray with us. We invited the heads of this Israeli tech company (the name escapes me, sorry). One of the heads is an Israeli Jew, the other is a Palestinian Muslim woman. And they work together and hire different people to help bring peace. Interfaith activity is the fastest way to dismantle prejudice.
    When I was in Israel in 2014 during the war, I was struck by how dismissive people were. It is true that the Arab nations in 1948 said “No peace, no recognition, no negotiations with Israel”, but that was years ago. It is true that when Israel withdrew unilaterally from the Gaza strip in 2005 and destroyed all Jewish settlements, Hamas was democratically elected and installed an education system of indoctrination of hatred toward Israel and uses children as human shields during protests. It is also true that the PLO and Hamas pay stipends to terrorists and use UN funds build terror tunnels into Israel.
    But that doesn’t mean that Palestinians don’t desire peace. They do desire peace, just as Israelis do. It is the terrorist organizations and the people who run them that don’t desire peace. It is those people who want Israel obliterated. While religious indoctrination is a serious issue, and learning hate should not be tolerated, we cannot conflate Hamas with the average Palestinian, and those who do are blatantly racist. That’s what’s great actually about online communication. You don’t have the pressures of face-to-face communication. If it ever gets too heated to the point where you stop listening to each other and there isn’t dialogue happening, you can pause and respectfully excuse yourself from the conversation. I’d like to see Israelis and Palestinians have more of that.
    The big question that I’ll end on is “Is it anti-Semitic to criticize Israel? Short answer: No. Not at all. Long answer: Depends. Israel is a country and no country is perfect. It deserves to be called out and criticized for its mistakes. Here’s the difference though. If you criticize Israel based on what you heard without doing research yourself to confirm the veracity of those claims, you’re probably not a bigot. Ignorance is different than bigotry. Though I would strongly recommend you do your own research rather than believe “claim x”. If you intentionally do not research because it is more acceptable in your social circles to use buzz words like “apartheid” and “genocide” and remain willfully ignorant, then you’re probably a bigot. Criticism of Israel is not anti-Semitic. Criticism of Israel based on ignorance isn’t anti-Semitic. Intentionally remaining ignorant while at the same time calling Jews “Nazis” and refusing to listen to any opposition makes you a bigot. Anyway, I know that’s long, but it sparked a lot in me. Agree? Disagree? Let me know.

      It sounds like we’re in agreement though. You called for a secular state where all those who reside have equal rights under law. I advocated for the same thing. Israel is currently a “secular state” by law. (In practice, it’s somewhere in between religious and secular). I think we’re on the same page.
      Also, I never said that the state had to be called Israel, I used the term greater Israel because that’s what it’s called now.

Do you really believe that God, if exists, sends people to hell and orders their execution just because they failed to believe in him (due to lack of evidence), or sends people to hell if they're born in non-muslim family (since most people, by default, believe in their parents religion and are biased towards it; just like you) or allows wars on non-muslim lands sex slavery, etc. (I don't want to waste my time, just watch apostate prophet and find out what the heck is there in Islam)

    I wish in reality the situation is as good as its shown in the video, the problem in this video is that most Muslims when confronted with a camera and an obviously foreign person who does the interviewing will definitely seem more tolerant and accepting towards other beliefs (you can see that clearly by the hesitated tone in some of them when answering the questions), I actually was surprised by the honesty of the guy who said he would kill his own family if they were Atheist! As an Atheist who leaves in an Islamic country I can guarantee that most answers will be similar to that guy's answer, if there wasn't a camera and a foreign guy who does the interview.
    PS. That doesn't mean that all Muslims are intolerant towards Atheists, but rather the majority of them are. I myself know some open minded Muslims such as the two guys at the end of the video, but unfortunately such people are a very rare.

So no one should try to discredit each other based on anecdotes which vary from place to place and from social groups to social groups. Again, there is no definite answer on how Muslim people would treat atheists since it really depends on social circles and therelike. Absolute answers are not really possible in this kind of circumstances.

    • @modigrey
      @modigrey 5 років тому +4

      @@Remake5182 just because you're an ex Muslim doesn't mean that what I said is bullshit, the degree of tolerance varies from country to another, maybe you live in Turkey or Tunisia where there is many open minded people, but if you live in Afghanistan or Pakistan that's different. Even Palestine is not high in the ladder of tolerance, I live in Yemen where the law here is based on Sharia law, the Sharia law articles in the constitution are considered red lines here that no one can touch. In 2014 a famous secular politician here criticized those articles, guess what happened to him?! He got assassinated two days later, they blow up his car while he's inside it. The punishment of apostasy is death here, now, if what I'm saying is bullshit and Muslims aren't pretending in front of a foreign guy, then:
      Why the majority of people here and even in Palestine support Sharia Law?!
      Why Omar Batoeel (a 17 years old kid in my country who criticized Islam on a Facebook post) got shot and killed and left to bleed to death in the street?! And the city refused to give him a proper burial because due to Islam teachings a 'murted' should not be buried in the graveyards of Muslims.
      Why when my mother knew I was an Atheist she begged me not to tell anyone about it?
      I hope you Mr. Ex Muslim can answer these questions.
      So unless I see my fellow Palestinian Atheists speak up openly about there beliefs, without the fear of being prosecuted or killed, it's considered mostly a pretending of tolerance in my opinion.
