Nothing states they were light beams, they were likely plasma. It’s like saying Star Wars blasters fire light speed bolts while they clearly don’t. If they were you wouldn’t even see them
Thor only seems to surround himself with lightnings but never actually transforms into pure energy, as he clearly travels way slower than actual lightning in this scene

Each of the successive Thor films gets worse. At first the cast included Stellan Skårsgaard and Sir Anthony Hopkins and the film was directed by Kenneth Branagh. Now, there are no top rank male actors in the films and it is all a sort of low-quality, low class, unfunny story. Even the music went from Led Zeppelin to Guns 'n Roses. Ragnarok really was the end of the line.
Yet the film before this one Ragnarok was rated as the Best of the entire series.
