I don't understand why everyone thinks it looks ugly now. I like both the 2018 and 2019 look equally. Imo the 2018 model front cowl looked a bit too long, I like how they shortened it up a tiny bit, looks a tiny bit better. I just wish they would lower the windscreen to make it look more sportier and get rid of those ugly signal lights (I know people can change it themselves, but still). They even wobble as you can see at 3:46
Yamaha is probably waiting to pay off the R and D of the R3 to pave the way for a potential R4. Id like it to be a modern FZR 400. Inline 4cyl...aluminum frame, twin front disc brakes. Back in '89 the 400 had no US competition. BRING IT BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I survived, somehow and moved on to BMWs that have allowed me to conquer the better part of North America, on road and off.
Love the new front end look but , Why the hell couldn't they put the signals in the fairing like the ninja 300? It looks like they built the bike and then said "Crap we forgot to put on the turn signals"
Thanks, Gonzo. Personally, I still like the Ninja 400 for the extra power. Chassis-wise, the R3 is pretty sharp for the money but I'd still like a cartridge kit. Yamaha does a GYTR kit that they race with in WorldSSP300 and MotoAmerica this year, but it costs a bomb. Probably not worth doing it for the road although you do get stuff like the fork kit, shock, race ECU, and much more. If you're going racing, for sure look at the GYTR kit because you'll spend a decent amount turning it from a road bike to a racer anyway.
I chose the Ninja 300 over 1st gen R3 (mainly due to available ABS, standard slipper clutch, better aero, looks [my opinion], better comfort, better MPG, and slightly better top speed despite a couple less HP than R3, and disdain for the 70's style floppy turn signals hanging off of a brand new R3!). Comparing the new Ninja 400 to the new R3, Ninja has the power advantage, looks (my opinion again), technology that works, and I personally appreciate that the Ninja is the original, the trend-setter, the one that everybody like Yamaha needs to emulate (Ninja 250 was the ONLY 'baby sportbike' forever before the 300s and 400)! The same reason I prefer a Suzuki Hayabusa over a Ninja ZX14R and H2- that and superior aerodynamics. I second Cycle News' opinion and feel the 400 is superior to the R3.
I never said it was the same dash. I said it was linked to the R6 and R1. Yamaha told us in the tech briefing they wanted the dashes to look similar, even though there were large spec differences between the three.
Cycle News how can it be linked to the r6 dash when it’s nowhere close to its shape nor style. To be more specific. It has the exact same dash and style as the mt10.
A happy owner of a modified Ninja 300 here. These little CC sportbikes fit my needs perfectly (unnoticeable on carrier on back of motorhome, economical, FUN, looks, reliability) and quite sprightly with engine mods. I'm leaning towards the Ninja 400 soon, as it's even lighter than mine was stock, and should be impressively quick with all the engine mods. Would love a GSXR750 next, but the smaller size of the 400 wins me over for the time being (120MPH and 0-60 in 4sec of my current 300 is even sufficient for a commuter😉). Lil' Yamaha, I'm not too impressed (when compared to the Ninja 300, especially the 400!). 1st gen R3 had no ABS or slipper clutch, worse aero and mpg compared to Ninja 300, lower top speed despite more (claimed) HP, worse suspension, and less comfortable to me. And somebody tell me WHY the floppy 70s style turn signals on a brand new 21st century sport bike!? New '19 R3 simply doesn't compare to the new Ninja 400, though I tried to love it, I really did!
You forgot to mention that the R3 was recalled 3 or 4 times since its release. I felt that yamaha was in a rush to get a slice of the entry level sportbike market.
If Yamaha was trying to make the R3 look like the R6 and R1 why does it still have the same tail light as the 2018 model. Even the R15 got that part right.
I think Yamaha missed the mark here by not updating to a 400cc R4. 44hp (Ninja 400) vs 37hp (R3) is not going to make much of a difference to a new rider on public roads. But on the track, that is a substantial difference. Look at the MotoAmerica Junior Cup field. For the 2021 season, I think there was 1 KTM and 1 R3 entry. The rest were all Ninja 400s. Wish they would bring back the FZR400 with modern features like fuel injection and electronics. If the worry is A2 regulations to limit HP, that can all be done with the ECU mapping. That would also allow the tuners to de-restrict a bike for more HP for track use.
Hi Rennie, Yamaha R3's are having good sales here in india as well but people do prefer buying KTM RC390 than this because of its huge price difference with more common specs.
In Colombia, the KTM Duke 390 is also more popular than the R3/MT03 (the MT03 is the naked version of the R3 sold here), prices: MT03: US$5.645, Duke 390: US$6.450. the new R3 is still not available in Colombia. I have a 2017 R3 and is a wonderful bike, I love it!!!
I love the way the new R3 looks, I've wanted an r3 as my first bike for a few months now and I'm so excited to get one! I was considering a Ninja 400 as my first bike but my second bike is gonna be a zx-6r and those would look so similar and I'd prefer the experience of going from a 300 to a 600 than a 400 to a 600. The Ninja 400 would make my zx-6r feel like it's the same bike just with a bit more power and that would be lame.
@Tebin My apologies, considering the fact that I've never even ridden a motorcycle before that was kind of a bold and ignorant statement for me to make. But I feel like they'd look too similar rather than perform too similar. But that's just from what I've seen in images, haven't seen either in person yet.
Actually the engine has been tweaked and it shows it on numbers to the rear wheel. 36 versus 35 HP, and the torque was improved marginally. The rear shock is redesigned and so is the forks. @@laurencemo884 What's up Lawrence ? It really does feel good around the 70-80 mark. Not much vibration at all really. It's a smooth ride at any speed for the most part. As far as comfort, it's also good. You're still slightly hunched over, so over time, my neck started getting tired (of course this was my first bike, and I wasn't used to wearing a helmet), but I would anticipate a little fatigue if I were you at first. Fuel efficiency is great. $7 fills it up for me (or close to it). It's also not a speed racer. It goes relatively quick at the start, but you aren't going to get on the highway, and just go from 50-100 in the blink of an eye. You can basically wind it out, and if you're speeding, you'll drop right back to the 30-40mph mark pretty fast. My overall thoughts are that it's a great bike for beginners, really. All the reports you read on that are true. However, if you're like me, and are already overly cautious, I would just skip the R3 and see about a 600cc if you can afford it. Do I like the R3 ? Absolutely, but before I got it, I thought they were these ultra dangerous machines, and if you weren't 1000% about safety for every single ride, that you would just end up dead. This isn't the case. Obviously safety is #1, but I could have easily handled a 600, and I wish I would have just went that route instead. Only because as I said, I'm overly cautious as it is, and it would just be nice to have something with a little bit more power. Otherwise, the R3 is still a great bike. It's not like I'm unhappy with the choice. You know what I'm trying to say, haha. Let me know if you decide to get one, I'd be interested in your thoughts as well.

Well I have have 1 here in Thailand. You can by a gyrt kit for it to go racing for about 6k and that takes it up to 48 hp and has a drop in ohlins cartridge kit. Etc etc this is what Yamaha have done to compete with the ninja 400 in wss 300 in 2019. But for the road the biggest issue is the front brake it's crap my R15 front brake is better then the r3. Also the front forks are a little soft so putting in a Traction dynamics ak20 kit in it will help. I like th bike but a slipper clutch would of been nice you get that with the gyrt kit and cams and a new ecu the non abs version isn't avaiable here in Thailand so I have to look at the shit cable routing on it every day. Also the cap between the seat and the side cover looks shit too but I'm sure you be able to get a aftermarket side cover for it soon especially in Asia but the blinkers on the bike look cheap and nasty too
Dont compare the R3 to the R15. It's insulting to the R15. Hahaha they should've just swapped the engines. Its crazy how the 150cc version has slipper clutch, VVA, aluminum swingarms, delta box frame and that sexy R1/R6 tail section.
Unfortunately yamaha is not kawasaki. Manufacturers try to be one step ahead of its competitors but kawasaki aint like that, they fucking leap forward. The only reason for a person to choose the r3 instead of the ninja 400 is if they prefer the looks of the r3.
I have a 2018 R3 and a 2019 ninja 400. Both are fun but the ninja 400 feels like it is in a different class. Although I feel the R3 is more comfortable, sounds great when redlining, and looks a little better. Going to keep both I decided.
Why do you worry about how you would look on the bike? At 6ft tall, you WON'T look "good" on any sport styled bike. Choose the bike which is most comfortable for you. :)

I have to agree the old looks are far better. Don't even get me started on the LCD dash...
@@Hakiri27 the old dash seemed like a toy bike, I disliked it 100% i guess opinions are like butts, everyone's got one.
@@isaacng3020 i just prefer a good analog tac. No opinion is right to anyone but yourself.
Seriously? RSU fork, big ass headlights, sport city triple clamp? The new R3 looks 10000% much much better
Handlebars could have been a little low
This or ninja 400?
Personally, I'd go Ninja 400. It's the same price (in the U.S) for the non-ABS version and you get more motor.
From a distance i would mistake it for a r15
No LED headlights I think....sooooo no
In blue you might but the white version of this bike looks good.
@@godfather4068
Any white bike😍
@@godfather4068 r15 v2/v3 both versions look better IMO
If anyone wants true input on these bikes, reply to this message with any questions. I did so much research on these before I purchased one, and now it's a year later. Also, in my opinion, the 2017 R3 looks way better than this. Not that my opinion matters much, haha.
Hey @myst93 how does the bike feel cruising at around 70 - 80mph? Vibration, comfort and fuel efficiency wise?
@@myst93 Hey man, I'm good! Really appreciated the quick reply man!
I'm actually based in the UK - So I think there'd be a decent amount of factors that would be different! But I am new to the scene? & wanting something to go up and down the country with (Motorways/Highways) that's why I asked how it felt on the 70-80mph mark!
Similarly, I'm being quite cautious for my first purchase in terms of safety but right now i'm really contemplating between the R3 or the 600/650cc bikes out there? (R6, GSXR etc.)
But it's great to get a true opinion on the R3 and I definitely get what you're saying! Did you get yours brand new? Or 2nd hand?
@@laurencemo884 I got mine brand new, and if you're safety conscious and always on the lookout, then honestly, go with the 600 man, really. Just make safety your #1 priority.
R125 please

Also the cap between the seat and the side cover looks shit too but I'm sure you be able to get a aftermarket side cover for it soon especially in Asia but the blinkers on the bike look cheap and nasty too
Imo i think a master cylinder and steel braded lines oughta do the trick on the mediocre braking issues.
Dont compare the R3 to the R15. It's insulting to the R15. Hahaha they should've just swapped the engines. Its crazy how the 150cc version has slipper clutch, VVA, aluminum swingarms, delta box frame and that sexy R1/R6 tail section.
Very very nice bike R3
R3 mileage
i wish wonder if yamaha could launch a bike of 350 to 400 CCs
I was hoping so, but not this year.
Unfortunately yamaha is not kawasaki. Manufacturers try to be one step ahead of its competitors but kawasaki aint like that, they fucking leap forward. The only reason for a person to choose the r3 instead of the ninja 400 is if they prefer the looks of the r3.
The R3 has 321cc's. A 400cc bike wouldn't be a huge difference.
@@martinhuynh4032 I have both and the n400 feels a lot quicker to me. It just feels easier to get up to speed. The extra torque is really nice.
Top seller? Funny. In Finland literally no one buys em, currently 2 used for sell and 0 2020 models in stores.
I was blown away as well when they told me that.
@@cyclenews but i want one so badly. gonna buy new one and the store will order it from germany.
430 Like Amazing Superb Video Fully Enjoyed ❤️
I love the older look.... the shark head look!!!!
been waiting to get the r3...now I have to go with the ninja 400. They ruined the look.
Do it. Ninja is faster too
I have a 2018 R3 and a 2019 ninja 400. Both are fun but the ninja 400 feels like it is in a different class. Although I feel the R3 is more comfortable, sounds great when redlining, and looks a little better. Going to keep both I decided.
I have dis bike n black :p perfect for me im a small lady standing at 5'1. Made it all black n red too ;D
Tiptoeing?
Does a 6ft tall guy looks good on this
I'm 6 feet tall. So you can judge from the video. Personally, I think I'm a little too big for this bike
Why do you worry about how you would look on the bike? At 6ft tall, you WON'T look "good" on any sport styled bike. Choose the bike which is most comfortable for you. :)
Posers! Kidding, I'm 5'7" and I know I'm a sexy b1tc# on my baby Ninja! What's more important is that you're having a good time!
Not a fan of the new facia, the old one was much more aggressive looking.
Yamaha r3 2018 model look better
Agreed. Bought a blue 2018. Love it.
It kind of looks like my CBR600RR
Yamaha please put two disc brakes on the front
Looks like an ADV bike now
Should have 4 cylinder, not 2 cylinder, yamaha, kawasaki, honda and suzuki. WAKE UP
