Couldn't agree more with your sentiment on Pulse (2001), Josh! It has long been my pick for, just, overall best modern ghost story. The scene you mentioned stuck with me for YEARS as some of the most effective and unsettling stuff I've ever seen. Whenever anyone asked me for some deep cut horror recommendations, Pulse was always the first movie I'd check if they'd seen.
The original Pulse was one of those, saw this on TV really late when I was 8/9, and didn’t know if it was real or not! Thank you for confirming it was a genuine film! And as always, keep up the amazing work!
The only one of these I ever saw was the american remake which did not lead me to checking out the original and I realize now that that was a distinct error on my part. Great vid Josh!
The fact that you demonstrated your fear of the garbage disposal launching something at you actually warranted a thumbs up from me! Plus I love watching and rewatching your videos! You really put a lot of time and research into your videos and it shows! Keep up the great work and thanks for the hours of entertainment your videos have provided me!
“Kairo” actually translates to “Circuit.” Pulse is the English title given to the movie for overseas distribution, which was picked up for the remake. Wes Craven wrote the initial drafts of the remake in 2003 but the project was canned by the Weinsteins for being too similar to ‘The Ring.’ They changed their minds, presumably after ‘The Grudge’ showed there was room in the market for more J-Horror remakes, but they didn’t bring Craven back and had Ray Wright redo the script. A version of the movie was test screened in early 2006 that was apparently quite different and somewhat better than the final film, but the Weinsteins did their thing and tore it apart in another round of edits and reshoots before releasing it. The “unrated” version on home video is still nothing like that earlier cut; you can find more details in the review of the movie on Snowblood Apple.
wow, talk about deepest recesses of my mind. I definitely watched the Joey Lawrence Pulse quite a few times as a kid in the mid 90's but had completely forgotten it until just now.
In the 2000s, Zenescope Entertainment did a short-lived comic book series called "The Chronicles Of Dr. Herbert West," which gets referenced in their Wonderland series, which references a ton of Horror Timelines selections and has heavy Lovecraft influences.
Leave it to Hollywood to take something that was already good, say we can "improve" it with hollywood magic. And then miss literally every point going.
Yet another of those instances where I'd spent all these years blissfully unaware that sequels existed. I may have to check them out just to laugh at what appears to be the most random overuses of bluescreen since 'Terror of the Autons'.
the 80's pulse is my favorite on this list, bc it proves that you don't need more or over the top deaths to have an effective horror film granted the acting is typical 80's cheese but I live for it
There was also a 2003 _Pulse_ which had "Marissa Cooper" (Mischa Barton) as a lead character. Guess it slipped past Josh's notice since most everywhere else outside the U.S. the movie was known as _Octane_ instead. I think it's an interesting story and has a killer soundtrack by the rave duo Orbital! If you can track this flick down somewhere online, give it a shot...
I saw the 80s Pulse as a kid on TV (didn't know what it was called for years) and it stuck with me for years because of the scene where a woman is burnt in the shower. That movie did for water heaters what Ring did for TVs. The Japanese Pulse is one of my favorite horror movies and one of the few truly spooky movies. It makes you feel unsettled, and it's also really fun to watch when it's really cold. I love recommending it, but I usually have to suggest people watch it twice to understand what's going on. Shutter is another good movie that can feel really spooky, too, that also got a really bad American remake that may have put people off from ever watching the original. Shutter made back and neck pain creepy.
I felt the same constant unsettling feeling after watching Visitor Q. Good film, it is Takashi Miike after all, but I can't unsee that shit, literally.
Pulse 3 The guy says that the radiation and dust would stay in the atmosphere but also says there should be a nuclear winter so there should be like an Ice Age or something
iv put off watching the original Japanese for years almost started it a few weeks ago since its on HBO max. iv been waiting till im in the right mindset. but imma take this as a sign thats its time i finally watch it!
I think a lot of the problem with the Japanese versus the American film has to do with Hikikomori. That had become a problem there in the 90s, so this movie was well timed to deal with the more horrifying ideas behind it. So, while I think individual people were in a position to enjoy the things about the Japanese version, in general, I can see why American creators might not have understood the societal dread that drove the Japanese version. BTW - I remember seeing the '88 version, but I'd forgotten about it until your review.
A-a-and if you can't open the shower door, you could, I don't know... *break* the frickin' thing? It's glass. I'm pretty sure shower doors with windshield-style safety glass weren't widely used in the 80s. 🙂
I never saw the Japanese film, I remember watching the American one and I quite enjoyed it for what it was despite it getting horrible reviews, I did however, buy the trilogy box set on DVD without seeing the sequels because it was actually cheaper than just buying the first film on its own and I hated them lol Pulse 2 and 3 should be burned from existence they're that bad. Glad you mentioned Pulse with the Lawrence brothers and Cliff De Young though, I right enjoyed that as a kid :) That and Cameron's closet were 2 films I watched over and over, I haven't seen either of them for years so I may just need a revisit :)
Omg the American Pulse films were so bad. I thought the remake with Kristen Bell was a direct to dvd situation so was shocked to see it was made on a 20 million budget and released to theatres! Those poor cinema goers!
I rewatched the American remake awhile back and couldn't handle the color scheme. I know it was a trend at the time thanks to Seven and The Matrix but they just couldn't pull it off. I need to catch the Japanese version.
In the middle of this video, i got a stranger to call my phone. Seems like in some way ,to have human connection is what these pulse movies are suggesting.
After watching this video im sticking to watching camp blood, and yeah I know that series is also bad but still after watching this and see how bad they are , cut me some slack please?
I watched the original last night for the first time. Frankly the American movie was so different that it is barely even a remake. I had some issues with both films (For example the original dragged on for a bit too long and it was almost too subtle sometimes) but at least the original had a clever concept, decent characters and a commitment to its themes. The American version was just another braindead post-Ring pop-horror flick.
I love your passion for these movies and check out every episode but man you need to polish up your banter. The long pauses and self depricating humour are annoying. You obviously know your stuff so just impress us with your knowledge
"No Mom, it's not too expensive and I NEED it." Is something every child has said to their parents at least once.

Can we talk about just how incredibly realistic pulse 3's CGI was!?
I agree, it should be praised as much as the roof scenes from The Room!

Of course the Weinstein's because who the fuck else would it be right?
This movie never got enough credit. Truly terrifying at the end of the film.
wow, talk about deepest recesses of my mind. I definitely watched the Joey Lawrence Pulse quite a few times as a kid in the mid 90's but had completely forgotten it until just now.
I remember watching that 1989 Pulse movie. Glad to see you spotlight it.

Pulse '88 was filmed in my hometown. Shout out to Glendora, Ca.
Thank you!! For the better part of 30 years I've been wondering what the 1988 Pulse movie was called
That bowl cut!

You should do a timelines episode on White Noise (2005) someday.

Japans pulse did freak me out and couldn’t sleep without thinking about the end ghost encounter
I request ‘Maniac Cop’ timeline
He was waiting for a remake but that’s in a devilment limbo so he might as well cover it

Also, you have the Japanese Pulse with "Pulse 88, 1988" in the corner over the clips.
The red tape summons the ghost in the original. In the remake it traps them.
I felt the same constant unsettling feeling after watching Visitor Q. Good film, it is Takashi Miike after all, but I can't unsee that shit, literally.
10:08 huh, even in a post-apocalypse, still got people casually driving at the end of the alley
Pulse 3

You sleep in a car bed? Yeah a freakin sweet car bed. My roommates are talking about getting me a cb radio for it.
I too also do not hover over garbage disposals because of this movie.

Hope this means the Ring/Ringu Horror Timeline is closest than ever
It's the dad from Flight of the Navigator!

Isn't red suit guy Frank from Raising Hope? Missed reference! :)
Kairo is my favourite of that era of J-Horror.

'Isn't that b-yad? It shot up right through her eye bwawl'
Omg the American Pulse films were so bad. I thought the remake with Kristen Bell was a direct to dvd situation so was shocked to see it was made on a 20 million budget and released to theatres! Those poor cinema goers!
Man when you ask for bad movies and I said pulse 2&3 I never thought they be the next video
Omg wow. I only saw the the American 2005 Pulse. I have to watch the J version. I didn’t even know there were horrible sequels
Is there a uncut version of the pulse movies.
The poster for the American remake is great, though.
Do the sam raimi Spider-Man trilogy
I rewatched the American remake awhile back and couldn't handle the color scheme. I know it was a trend at the time thanks to Seven and The Matrix but they just couldn't pull it off. I need to catch the Japanese version.

The 88 American movie was included in this timeline because reasons...?

A classic phelous reviews of all these movies aside the Japanese version as that’s good
I've never seen the Japanese version, but I remember linking the 1st of the remade series. But the last two were terrible
I know what I know boy but I’m not telling it
I remember watching the original Japanese version in it is not as scary as the American version.
Someone bought me a copy of the Kristen Bell version. Watched it once, lousy The Ring knockoff. I don't even like The Ring!
That screening on pulse 2 is bad.
I love your passion for these movies and check out every episode but man you need to polish up your banter.
The long pauses and self depricating humour are annoying.
You obviously know your stuff so just impress us with your knowledge
88 Pulse was a good movie!, the American Pulse series wasn't!
J-Horror in general is just... not scary to me. I laugh at alot of them.
My parents made me choose between the Terrordrome or the USS Flagg. I chose the Flagg. I have no regrets
Joey Lawrence is holding a brand new Gator Mark Rigowski board, Gator would go on to murder in real life .
