Never got to see him live.. but these songs on video...especially Sam Stone and Hello In There...I'm 72 now and they still bring a tear to my old eyes... ...both Iconic tunes.. RIP old friend
my wife and I were wed in September 2016. We are both 60. We put off our "Honeymoon" to go to Des Moines, Iowa to see John Prine. We both have been to many concerts, plays, ballets, etc. but we both agree that this was he best performance we have ever seen. We drove almost 300 miles one way. We have been John Prine fans since the 70's. Who the hell goes to Des Moines, Iowa on their Honeymoon except to see John Prine
WELL JAY , YOU AND THE WIFE COULDN'T HAVE CHOSEN A BETTER STATE TO DRIVE TO OR A BETTER SINGER SONGWRITER PERFORMING TO SEE MR. JOHN-PRINE IN CONCERT !!!!! ID SAY THAT 300 MILE DRIVE 1 WAY WAS WELL WORTH IT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I think you two are connected in a beautiful way! The trip sounds exciting to me! I too have been to many concerts, I am a lifetime John Prine fan..but back to you two..Congratulations and keep having fun!
One of the greatest songs ever written, IMHO! I’m not referencing popularity; I’m referencing across the entire spectrum of music. “Hello in There” is in a league of its own. It’s a perfect blend/balance of complexity and simplicity, of depth, insight, narrative, imagery, symbolism, and theme. He shines a light on a lost and lonely everyday couple, and by doing so he shines his light on seniors everywhere. I’m in awe of his talent and of his humble, soft spoken personality. I mourn his loss daily.
never had the pleasure of seeing John Prine in concert but I see him every day inside my head. His lyrics take me to the places I really wish to be. thanks John for allowing me to live inside my head with you.
I shot this show with my Brother Tom and a tribe of about 24 from Va Beach and elsewhere. This song was a highlight and I've I've retold his funny story so many times. John we are all sending positive energy your way. We need you now more than ever--so take your mind off that cigarette that's nine miles long...
i became a fan 2014 after watching John Prine on UA-cam- i was fortunate enough to see John twice at Radio City and Kings Theatre both in NYC- I actually found out what i truly love in music after listening to John Prine- so many good things can be said i'd be writing all night- i play acoustic guitar as a amateur and have fun learning his songs- John Prine inspires us all in some way- how many times have i thought of a lyric and melody to one of his songs and it got me through a cloudy day- i kept thinking after he passed the lyric to the Summer's end song 'Summers end came faster than we wanted, but than i concluded John just went back home like his song goes- Your music will always inspire humanity. I'll always be listening
It doesn;t matter what JP s voice is like now,his words and his music transcends it and is the most emotional sense in all of music, you rock JOHN,THE BEST!!!!
Ive only just discovered John Prine through Jason Isbell/Amanda Shires. Saw him last night despite not really knowing his songs and really enjoyed it. Funnily enough listening to him prior to his illness I actually prefer his voice now.
JammanTV : me too. Went to a gig in Glasgow last month because Amanda Shires was playing but left with a huge respect for this man and listening to him almost daily now. Brilliant songwriter. Bonus was an appearance from Sturgill Simpson. One of the best gigs for a long time.
Agree with your sentiments entirely, thought the gig was brilliant. Missed the last song or maybe two so I could dash out and get a train back to Edinburgh but agree that the Amanda Shires contribution combined with the Sturgill Simpson 'drop in' made it a magical night all round.
There is so much heart in a John Prine song. You can hear it in his voice. Just always grabs my heartstrings. I've been listening to John Prine since the 70s . A true Jewel of a human being.
Have played some of John's songs for over 20 years, but this loss to COVID, immersed me in PRINE! I learned this song and it has special meaning to me and my recent 70 year mark. THIS performance brought me to tears! God bless John Prine!
I should have listened to the praise and respect and love Kristofferson has for this man. Only real discovered John 6 or so months ago. Wow. What other words are there. Hes the real deal. Im hearing rumour he may play in NZ soonish. Im there already.
A tribute to John -- the great John Prine... Godspeed, ol' buddy, till we meet again. 💞 "Godspeed Old Friend" When I heard the news, it hit me hard John Prine had died, it broke my heart My old buddy, though we never met Godspeed, my friend, you were the best *The salt of the Earth, the sizzle in bacon The dust on the road of a town forsaken A little hayseed, a lot of kicked mule Didn’t own a comb, never played no fool Just a big ol’ goofy smile in a big ol’ goofy world John Prine, gonna miss you, every note you pearled Your smile was illegal in fifty states But when the cops showed up, you wiped it from your face... Oh, it was still there, lingered like a duck Don’t know what that means, guess I’m out of luck Oh, there on the banks of Lake Marie, the shadows look like blood on TV I hope you saved your marriage I know she broke your heart Just like God broke mine, when yours wouldn't start *The salt of the Earth, the sizzle in bacon The dust on the road of a town forsaken A little hayseed, a lot of kicked mule Didn’t own a comb, never played no fool Just a big ol’ goofy smile in a big ol’ goofy world John Prine, gonna miss you, every note you pearled How many barns did you storm? How many angels kept you warm? How many flowers will we need to honor your life, old friend, your deeds? *Chorus When I heard the news, it hit me hard John Prine had died, it broke my heart My old buddy, though we never met Godspeed, my friend, you were the best Godspeed, my friend, till we meet again. 😪❤️😞
Thanks. This is, imho, a beautiful version of one of the finest songs ever written. First heard it about 11yo and began looking for those eyes-been doing it ever since. Grateful to still be at it and tickled, now 60yo, the few times it’s happened to me. #BeKind #HelloInThere #BeLove 🐝❤️
artist who paint life stories with words ( Dylan, Waits, Prine .) transcend their vocal abilities and take to a place of inner sensabilities the touch the true core of our being human. something we all should understand and cherish. Their words will last infinum in my mind.
Alan ekrem have you heard the you tube video of blaze foley( Michael David Fuller) singing is “ if I could only fly”? Recorded in a ratty Austin bar not long before he was murdered. Accompanied only by the beautiful harmonica playing by the bar tender. Surreal. He never lived to see it make Merle Haggard millions.
yeah but this came from a guy who was a mailman in a suburb of Chicago, IL. Its different. he was just an average guy. But he meant the world to all of us.
I pick up my guitar and try to play this song,i can't get thru it without breaking down and crying..Go and see John at a show if you can great entertainer and beautiful song writer.
This real music is fading away, so sad to say ... I saw him in Richmond, VA Altria Theatre 11November 2017 and he was still sounding good and looked pretty healthy ... hope he’s with us lil’ longer as we have lost some good ones this year !
John Prine, sorry you had to go now. I'm also sorry I didn’t get to know your body of work until you'd just left us. How was I so distracted that I missed you? Thank you for the humor, honesty, poignance, humility and fingerpicking. You'd have been another of my good partner Gary P.'s and my private bonds. I’m dedicating your songs to him, wherever he is. Hoping he can hear you up there in the Wild Blue Yonder, 'cause, if so, I'm looking to the day we can do it together, standin'by peaceful waters.
I became aware of John Prine through Natalie Merchant (who I've seen several times) covering this song - brilliantly! What a talent and wonderful person that is John Prine.
Wendy Woolpert I bet John Prine doesnt give a flying fuck who gave the thumbs down. So think of something constructive to say, or are one of those on an ego trip to see their comment up, so a thumbs down boo hoo will do. Pathetic!
You just didn't want to miss a word of his. You kept your mouth because if you didnt youd miss a story of his. or a line from a song. and you'd be pissed if you did.
This song makes you really quiet when you get it, actually. Those noisy people in the audience obviously didn't get it. I could be wrong but I think John must have thought something similar. The way he reacts, so serene, shows what a great heart he had, always showing his gratitude towards his audience, no matter how they behaved.
I saw you John in Houston in 1976 playing in a movie theater on a night they weren't showing movies. You got drunk onstage but we all had a good time. Is your sister really a nun?
Never got to see him live.. but these songs on video...especially Sam Stone and Hello In There...I'm 72 now and they still bring a tear to my old eyes...
...both Iconic tunes.. RIP old friend
I still get emotional and misty eyed when I hear him sing. RIP John Prine

Has the divorce been finalized yet ? J/K, John Prine was AMAZING.
I so would do it too
CRUSHED... The great John Prine has died -- the Salt of the Earth... The sizzle in bacon... The dust in the sun from a country road in the wind. 💔😞

I don't cry often. But when I heard he passed I watched this and cried alligator tears.
Still, you cried......x
I still am but the biggest ones are from laughin'

I love what he was saying before the song. Great human being.
John Prine is smart, witty, sensitive, creative and extremely talented. His music and the meaning behind his songs are timeless.
It doesn;t matter what JP s voice is like now,his words and his music transcends it and is the most emotional sense in all of music, you rock JOHN,THE BEST!!!!

First saw John in Greenfield,Massachusetts in the 70s. He's the greatest. Young folks please listen to this man. He's the real thing!
John Prine is one of America's greatest poets.....living or dead.
There is so much heart in a John Prine song. You can hear it in his voice. Just always grabs my heartstrings. I've been listening to John Prine since the 70s . A true Jewel of a human being.
What a special soul. RIP John, thanks for all the fine songs.

Perfection.
Who are the people who give this a thumbs-down? Philistines.
Wendy Woolpert I bet John Prine doesnt give a flying fuck who gave the thumbs down. So think of something constructive to say, or are one of those on an ego trip to see their comment up, so a thumbs down boo hoo will do. Pathetic!

Goodbye old friend ;-( #JohnPrineRIP
Remember when audiences used to keep their big mouths shut until the song was over?😢
That's just what I was thinking. Wow so disrespectful!!!
Especially with a song like this. Jeez . . .
the times they are a changing.......
