      Don’t be afraid to pass on a card that doesn’t look right in a PSA holder. If you see a card with a dinged corner, mis-cut, chipping or edge wear it isn’t a 9 or 10. I’ve seen 100’s of cards like this. If it doesn’t look or feel right trust yourself…there are more scams, including from the manufacturer’s themselves, going on today. Forget breakers trading out cards ect ect. Infact, PSA themselves have been shown giving preferred submitters an unlikely number of 10’s and black-tie 10’s. Some guy who submitted over 100 cards got back all 10’s which is impossible.

    About 12 years ago I purchased a PSA 9 Seaver rookie on Ebay. The case was slighlty scratched (but showed no other signs of tampering). After about a year I decided to have it reholdered and came back from PSA altered card and altered holder. I was out 3 grand at that time. Now I was a experienced collector (for about 35 years) at the time and grading/buying PSA graded cards for 10 years. I was so pissed I sold my whole graded card collection (100's of high end PSA 9 and 10 rookie and second year cards) and took my family to Hawaii for three weeks for a high end vacation. If the doctors could fool me they could fool anyone. Be careful....

      Makes me worry about all my graded PSA cards. I had not bought a card since 2016 and then got the urge to get back into it so I've been selling my PSA 6's of Mays, Mantle, Clemente and Aaron and going to PSA 7's. I consigned out the PSA 6's to a large Ebay seller and so far have sold half and everything's good. But now I worry if it will stay good and also have to worry whether any of the 7's might have been bogus that I've bought since November.

    My question is how do we know this is not an inside job with a PSA employee? I would raise that question for sure since these slabs are very convincing. Take some empty slabs home and do your scam at home. That’s where my radar immediately goes to. Great info as always my friend!!!

      An employee having access to new slabs would make this so easy. I would think it would be hard to exactly copy the PSA slab and much easier for an employee to simply steal a bunch. If not an employee then maybe someone who works in the PSA building; like a nighttime cleaning person or a contractor doing remodeling or a customer who somehow grabbed a few boxes.

      The slabs are super easy to get, what ya need is an ultrasonic welder with the correct fixture which is available at many manufacturing shops. We have one at work. A coworker of mine slabs cards for shops or independent sellers with their logo on them. He is honest and only makes cards with individuals logos but if we wanted to we could easily fake cards due to having access to the ultrasonic welder. With the increase in value of trading cards over the last four years, the scammers have figured out there is good money in doing this sort of crap. As a collector of over 50 years I’ve seen my fair share of scams. I have also seen so many swapped out cards, mis-graded (yes, PSA themselves are facing “sweet-heart” grading accusation) cards, trimmed cards in PSA slabs….and the list goes on.
    The 1st thing that needs to happen is this guy who did this needs to go to jail. He’s robbed, most likely, 100’s of thousands of dollars off of collectors…it’s like counterfitting. But the most important thing is using due diligence before buying anything. Just because a card is in a PSA holder and says 10 doesn’t mean it is a 10. Look at the card closely. If you see a card doesn’t fill out the holder completely pass on it. A PSA 9 or 10 shouldn’t have errors that ghe naked eye pick up….if you see it pass. Most importantly, let other’s know!

    • @DanTheCardMan2
      @DanTheCardMan2  Рік тому +2

    I know they're new, but TAG's slabs should be the standard going forward. Any slab that has a sticker/label that can be pulled out and reused is going to be tampered with. TAG's slab actually imprints the information into the window on the acrylic, there is no sticker, label, etc. This will be incredibly more difficult and less profitable to try to swap out cards since you'd have to have their etching setup to do so close enough to try and pull off. Heck, if their prices were cheaper, maybe we should consider them going forward. There's just been so many frauds and scams with PSA and the others that maybe it's time to stop treating them as the end all be all. Maybe AI grading IS the way to go, since it's so subjective otherwise and one PSA grader may give one card and 8 and a different guy gives it a 10. Too much variance, not to mention the obvious cards that are being intentionally kept to low pop 10's (Rickey Henderson, Ozzie Smith, Eddie Murray - there are more GEM MT 10 78 Mike Schmidt's than of these 3 combined with only 2,616 grades compared to 12,140 for the Murray, 11,571 for the Smith, and over 30,400 for the Henderson). Either way the only way things will change is if the consumers force their hands, and it's not looking like that will happen anytime soon.

    Great video Dan. Most vintage collectors store away their cards, so most of those fake cards will remain buried for a long time. Then will come a time where they (or their family) will sell the cards and find out PSA decertified. Given the quality control at PSA, they will likely decertify many legit cards too, either by blindly decertifying all cards from that seller or mistyping a cert number.

PSA case is supposed to be patented but few cases out back and your good. PSA has been adding new security to combat it. What PSA started Registry and then just started taking photos of everything to compare but older slabs not in system. If you wanna know depth of how crooked thus market is. Try finding info when faje jersey cards were in a bunch of cards. It was right before UD lost licenses and Donruss was bought by Panini. Their was an article in beckett. They wouldn't say wich Company or wich cards were wrong all that info got sealed by courts. They even said Reason it won't be released is it would likely bankrupt card industry.

    I have been struggling with this kind of stuff of late. So much graft in our once beautiful hobby. I think the word fake is somewhat misleading. Maybe imposter is better. The inserted cards are at times authentic but just far inferior to the grade listed on the header. The comments you showed from some people are startling and indicate the lack of ethics in some dealers. I can't really point any blame at PSA or EBAY, even though they have their issues. An authentically guarantee speaks to the card itself and the card may be a real Jordan but in much poorer shape than the original card that we removed. So technically the card is authentic but the slab is fake. PSA can't be happy about this but what will their response be? Perhaps making the headers imbedded inside the plastic and non removable.
    The grading industry has it's share of corruption with incintious relationships between large auction houses and grading companies. Thank you for this video. It is excellent but also heartbreaking.

So his scam would be that he would buy graded cards on Ebay and then crack them open and put in lower graded cards and reseal the case? Or he make his own cases identical to PSA and use the PSA info card in his case? I would think it would be very hard to exactly copy the PSA case, so you have to wonder if he had access to new PSA cases

    May I just highlight that it is not PSA who are at fault here but more so the seller, eBay and also purchasers for not doing their due diligence. Hope whoever is involved in doing these things is held accountable!

    • @don951
      @don951 Рік тому +1

      I would go a step farther and say it is also not eBay at fault here. They are a marketplace only. The transaction is between buyer and seller. Ebay has addressed this with their Authenticity Guarantee program, so they are responding. In this case he was selling lots, but that should be a red flag now. No other online venue gives this much protection to buyers. If you get it in hand and see that it is fake, you will get your money back. If you don't, that is on you. PSA and eBay cannot protect people from themselves in all cases. And yes, hopefully these people will be put in jail.

    This is ultimately why TAG will save the hobby. Once they expand into the vintage market, it’d behoove everyone to crack all their vintage slabs and submit to TAG. Take the hit on getting a lower grade, but KNOW the “final grade” for that card. TAG’s detailed imaging creates a “fingerprint” for every card. It becomes impossible to pass off a fake or a reslab, because every card has very unique imperfections, that the machine can easily compare against the original.
