Thrash is fun and is definitely the common ground for metalheads. Fans of different types of metal can usually agree on thrash. That said, it's also the most limiting style of metal there is. Death and black metal, despite being more extreme, have more variety and creativity.

I skipped over a lot of good thrash when I was first getting into metal, besides the obvious big ones. I kinda went right from that into death, black and grind. So now as I get older, I’m enjoying going back to all the good shit I missed out on. Loving bands like Whiplash, Morsüre, Schizo, Necrodeath, Sacrilege BC and Aggression.
I never got into the “revival” bands that got popular in the mid 2000’s, so I definitely couldn’t recommend you any more good modern bands lol. Another great video Drewcifer! 😎🍻🤘

If I find myself digging anything new (90s - now) thrash-wise, there's a 90% chance it's black thrash. An indicator something MAY be interesting is if they have the word "witch", "lucifer", "hammer", or "master" in the band name.
I recently made a playlist featuring the following bands (obviously not all apply to this video) but it shows the direction my brain was going when I made it: Deus Mortem, Power From Hell, Diabolic Night, Grave Altar, Cloak, Lucifer's Hammer, Cruel Force, Nocturnal Witch, Vicious Blade, Witchery, Wraith, Hellripper, Malum, Abominator, Witches Hammer, Mortuary Drape, Witchnight, Nocturnal Witch, Witchmaster, Thy Serpent, Master's Hammer
Bouncy, fun, party shit is fun and all, but if it sounds disingenuous and is being made by 20 year olds in Supra skytops and tight Canadian tuxedos and fingerless motorcycle gloves I'm likely walkin'. Cheers 🍻

I think when I consider why or what makes modern Thrash at a slight disadvantage or lesser when compared to the creation of it actually has very little to do with new thrash bands and the people who make them up. First for me, I got really into punk around 2000 and some of the real or truer punk rock bands were from the UK, around 1982, affectionately known as Uk 82. Around 2000 there was movement of newer bands that were emulating this style and they were called street or chaos punks. Why I feel this movement and bands is worth mentioning is because one of the crucial and important factors in thrash’s development and origin is this same style of punk rock. To summarize, feel like the original intentions and actions of the original thrash movement as to mixing Maiden and GBH, can’t happen today or it can but it requires a very open mind and willingness to accept the similarities and divisions of punk and metal. In conclusion, if Punk is Dead(if you feel that’s true) well then Thrash Metal is too.

Interesting topic. I have to admit when the new wave came I welcomed it with open arms. I remember going to shows for years with openers like Lacuna Coil (not knocking them, just not my thing) or something being the openers. Then out of the blue in the early 2010s I go to shows and Havok or Evile is the opener and it made the show 10x better for it. But I do have to admit I don't think I bothered checking the discography of another modern Thrash band after that with the exception of High Command just because they made me laugh being kind of ridiculous, so that made me give them a chance, but even that was short lived. Not bad, just nothing stuck with me, if that makes sense.
Honestly, and I know I'm likely in the minority, here's what I'd like to see. Take a band like 90s era Iced Earth with songs like Stormrider, Violate, Wolf, or even the song Iced Earth. Those songs were more or less 60 percent Power Metal to 40 percent Thrash. I'd like to see a band that flips it the other way. 60 to even 70 percent Thrash to 40/30 Power Metal but don't half ass either part. Be creative with each in how you make it work. Go from Sepultura style vocals to a lower end-mid range but still melodic Matt Barlow vocal style. Maybe occasionally if the song calls for it bust out some glass shattering high notes, but only we necessary. Not that exactly imitating Max/Matt, but you get the idea. Sort of like a Thrash/Power Metal version of a band like Iotuun in how the feel and vocals switch back and forth, but being original with it too. Again, probably in the minority, but that would get my attention real fast.

For me the only thrash band that came after the early 90's that was any good and managed to write really memorable songs was Power Trip. The genre stopped being relevant during the 90's, and not only has it remained stagnant since then, but as the years have passed it has become more and more lifeless and stereotypical. Same with speed metal, which to me is a less aggressive version of thrash. At least death and black metal continued to evolve to this day, and there are still some bands in those subgenres that push the envelope.

Big disagree on Toxik and Forbidden being boring Thrash. Out of all the Bay Area Thrash Metal bands Forbidden was one of the least generic in the sense that they had a lot more melody in their riffing, Falsetto vocals, and stronger NWOBHM influences. Their debut is one of my favorite Thrash Metal albums and their second album is also really good as well. Toxik is the same way although much more technical and progressive sounding. I do agree with you on the modern Thrash scene though. It is really over saturated the same way a lot of the Black/Speed Metal stuff is over saturated. These bands try so hard to replicate the 80’s vibe that it becomes very contrived and mundane and it becomes impossible to take them seriously as they do not even attempt to try and do anything that is remotely interesting or original in their music.
