    Just did the procedure on a MGX and MGXtreme2 and have to warn you guys: In my MGXtreme2 (LH, very recently purchased in Germany) the brake ring was glued to its plastic holder (three drops, one under each of the "legs" of the plastic holder). You have to be extremely careful to not break the holder! Took me about as long to get them separated as you for the whole procedure. :D

    Figured I'd give it a shot on a BlackMax that I don't really use. It has the 5 little pucks type brake tabs as opposed to the 360 degree plate. Needless to say they didn't polish evenly as you'd expect. But they did polish to the point of at least being closer to 'even' with each other. Couldn't hurt.

      Awesome! Thanks for your patience. Everything local to me is running high...but it's the fishy kind of high water. That's the beauty of this little trick. It's very simple. It affords a hair of a distance increase....but really quiets down the cast. While offering a bit more cast to cast consistency. I first did it 5 years ago when I messed up my mgx...got a replacement disc...and did a little experiment. So i know its long term benefits.

      I polished the gear teeth on a stella and I now have a stella with polished gear teach that really isn't any different than it was before :) I'm doing some experimenting with casting distance and a spool mod to see if that works. Not much really needed for spinners. Good quality reels get a bit smoother after some use. Hi. Is there any option to tune for example a shimano slx dc to have more break force ? It’s somehow too few or something is wrong. It’s just a few clicks to close the break down completely and that’s very hard to do so and the lighter settings are too many clicks. Do you have any idea how and if I can increase the break force or make the way longer from hard break setting until completely closed break ?

    • @TackleAdvisors
      @TackleAdvisors  2 роки тому +1

      I never experienced that with the SLX DC...I use 2 as a general duty setting without an issue. 1 for slinging jigs inside 75 feet, where I want precision, and use my thumb. Not really sure. Mayber clean out the spool bearings, and apply 1 drop of thin oil (tsi 321) to ensure consistent spin rates

    Nice simple mod that anyone can do! Have you seen what extra distance you got? Did you have to turn up the brakes since the polish would lessen the friction?

    • @TackleAdvisors
      @TackleAdvisors  7 років тому +1

      I found that with the mod and this reel. And spooling up 8lb braid. It allowed better distance with lighter baits and smooth trouble free casting with baits down to 1/16th of an ounce on a rod rated 1/4 to 1.5 ounces (loL). I had planned to be out in the fields doing measurements using the 15lb j braid which is my benchmark line in the previous test. But out of the blue it downpoured all day. Tomorrow I'll be doing about 5 hours of measured tests.

      @@TackleAdvisors To each their own and YMMV. Mechanicals are not for me and really long distance beach casting to 150 yards and beyond. First thing I do with all Abu C3's and their ilk (Akios, etc) is to fully remove centrifugal brakes (and all level wind components, if found) and install a good mono mag. Far better casting control and nothing to ever wear out or change braking characteristics due to wear, temperature, water invasion. Most decent lo-pro bait casters for sweet or inshore salt have mag brakes and that's all that's needed.

Just start with a CT. :) (FYI I'm a long time surf caster and am an admin on the world's largest surf casting forum for over a decade) my longest measured casts ranged between 700 and 800 feet

    • @TackleAdvisors
      @TackleAdvisors  7 років тому

      Someone just asked this. THis is what I told him.
      For the high end fw stuff. I have some Krytox 225. No doubt that is the best stuff. But man is it $$...The film it leaves is near permanent it seems.
      Just a couple dots on the pinion and main gear is all that is needed.
      Corrosion x is quickly becoming my go to for saltwater. And it is better than anything else i've used in fw (aside from krytox)...and i used EVERYTHING..From that crap hotsauce and ardent butter....to corrosion block, royal purple, yamalube etc. But it looks like baby puke....but works and lasts :)
      krytox amzn.to/2eGy4SW
      corrosion x amzn.to/2urcQMz
      If you use krytox...make certain that the surface is free of any other oils or contaminants. It doesn't really mix with other lubes and looks like it curdles. Not a bad thing...but corrosion x grease can be thinned with corrosion x oil .

    Working with metal press tool sanding is not good even you want to shine it... it'll take at least 1000 off the metal... use metal polish then is you need more use a scub patch to smooth it down own and ice blaste it for better clean and shine and acetone it... sand paper will take a lot off metal and 1000 off is a lot for it to miss with the reel or it'll take the shape edge of it
