Star Wars fans are even more divided than they’ve ever been with the new release and with people jumping to slam whilst other’s leap to it’s defence it’s time to re-examine to movie and discuss why people are labelling it as the worst Star Wars movie ever.
There’s gonna be heavy spoilers here, so if you haven’t had a chance to watch the film yet and don’t want anything about it potentially ruined then I highly suggest that you turn off now.
With that out the way I just wanna give a huge thank you for clicking this video, now let’s get into our breakdown of the Rise Of Skywalker.
Things I liked
Ok so before we get into the parts I didn’t like about the movie, I thought I’d discuss what elements of the film I enjoyed because I think anyone would be stupid to say that nothing in this film worked.
Ok so I loved seeing Lando back on the big screen, Billy Dee Williams brought an air of Charisma and a charm with him that really elevated all of the scenes he was in. Seeing him ride into battle at the end was awesome and I loved watching him return.
Adam Driver too completely knocked it out of the park. He’s quickly becoming one of my favourite actors of this generation and every Kylo Ren scene was brilliant.
Watching his exchange with Han on the Death Star was heartbreaking and it definitely felt like the emotional highpoint of the entire trilogy.
Poe was also excellent in this film, in the past, especially The Force Awakens, I kinda felt like he was just Han Solo light and just saying things to move the plot along rather than being an actual character, however here Oscar Isaacs really gets to shine in the role and the movie is better for him.
Rey’s battle with the dark side too is excellent and had they not shown their hand and had a Dark Rey feature heavily in the marketing for the movie, then I think that the standoff with herself would’ve blown me away in theatres.
I also liked Babu Friks laugh.
Now onto the stuff I didn’t like.
The Opening Crawl
Ok so let’s start with the beginning of the film, most notably the opening crawl that kick starts almost every Star Wars movie. Personally I felt that the opener for the movie really tried to just cram in as much information as possible and it was clear that they didn’t have time to set any of this up so they bashed in as much as possible. Even the opening line which says:
The dead speak! The galaxy has heard a mysterious broadcast, a threat of REVENGE in the sinister voice of the late EMPEROR PALPATINE
Doesn’t really work for me.
Reviving a character in a line of text is very underwhelming and I was so surprised that it came out like this that I went back and scoured the internet to see if there had been any set up at all in the prior films or marketing material.
What I found is that there actually had been a broadcast of the Emporers voice to set up this movie that had been put in…and I’m not kidding you…a Fortnite live event.
Now I’m not saying that this is a bad idea to set your entire movie up in a Fortnite live eve…well actually it’s a very bad way to set the main premise of your movie up. I don’t know why we couldn’t have heard this broadcast in one of the many scenes in which Kylo travels to Exogol, at least put it in the movie, at least let the audience know why this message is so alarming to so many people, give...

Bringing back the old emperor was lazy bad writing, like you said it cheapens the the death scene of the original.
Ren should have been Supreme Leader. He kills Hux early in the movie, and descends into hell from there
Ren isn't a threat, or are we still pretending that he wasn't even with Finn, after what should have been at least ten years training with a lightsaber, and Finn having trained with a baton a couple times, let alone Rey, who nearly beat him to death twice, let alone Hux, poor poor Hux, turned into a joke character by Last Jedi
It isn't just lazy. It makes the originals and Anakin's story arc completely irrelevant.
I'm fine with Palpatine being back, but they really needed a explaination. They could just had done a flashback scene where a dying perhaps even torn to shreds Palpatine got carried into a escape shuttle before Deathstar 2 exploded. This shuttle whould later land on Exegol where Palapatine had moved alot of the Kaminoan cloning technology after the clone soldier program got dismantled. Palpatine could then had used the transfer essence technique to force his conciousness in a young clone of himself. This whould had tied togheter the movies better aswell as giving some answers.
After this they could had done alot more, like revealing that the now young Palapatine was a part of Lukes new Jedi order planting insecurities and thoughts amongst the students and Luke. Which whould be a far better explaination for Lukes behavior while at the same time work as a Ben Solo motivator to fight Palpatine at the end. Palpatine whould still have motivation to get a new body since Kaminoan cloning tech had accelerated aging. Ben solo could then had uncovered this during the movie and realised, he was both decieved and disposable. Due to cloning facilities the manpower issues regarding the star destroyers whould also be solved, since Palapatine could just order a far smaler group to once more make a clone army.
Bringing Back a Palpatine Clone, is actually a part of the Story from Star Wars : The Force Unleashed Game movies ...
But yeah it was Lazy ...
The Director's/Producers Made up the Story has they Go ! Patching and crippling the Star Wars Universe in the process, without any respect for George Lucas Legacy !
The whole enterprise should have ended with Rogue One. A worthy film, one of the most sophisticated and precise chapters in the franchise. One that ended in a bloodbath with a electric spark of hope. Perfect.
I love Rogue One. It is the ultimate fan film.
Rogue One is good, but Star Wars should have ended with Return of the Jedi, though it's the weakest film of the original trilogy.

Luke was tempted to kill Kylo because of his tendancy to the dark side and lineage... But Rey is a Palpatine and everyone's okay with that.

People who never knew their parents (Luke) have a different outlook on the world. He wanted to know and have a father. He didn’t want his nephew to be lost from his family so he over reacted. I don’t believe it’s a big leap to believe that people with great power behave in demonstrative irrational ways when it comes to family.
And yes, Rey is Palestine but there are good people that come from bad families and vice versa.

Force healing is my biggest complaint in the movie. The whole point of Anakin becoming Darth Vader was because he wanted to find a way to heal Padme. If force healing was around he could have just healed her and his mom. Also that force transport was bullshit too!

these movies are completely tone-deaf. I'll give you just one example: Ben saves Rey from death. Ben and Rey kiss. Rey looks happy. A SECOND LATER Ben dies and passes into the force (maybe?). Next scene: Rey looks happy and celebrates with her friends. Ben is never mentioned again and doesn't appear as a force ghost. Rey STILL looks happy and is never shown even mourning for Ben. Anyone see anything wrong with this??!!

It may be due to the massive number of cuts and recuts. All of the actors are very good - look up their other work, and it is clear that given a good script and clear direction they can deliver. Suspect they end up cramming in scenes of the end that were shot with different direction and guidance.

Remember in TESB when Obi-Wan tells Luke that if he fights Vader he can't intervene? Well, I'm pretty sure that applies with all force ghosts. They can't be around when there is a presence strong with the Dark Side of the force.

Tom Haynes Stop the prequels were terrible, quit with the recency bias. All the prequels were bad. Phantom Menace was a bore, Clone Wars had the horrible and unbelievable romance between a woman and a teenager that dominated the run time. Revenge of the Sith was easily the best prequel but the build up to Anakin becoming Vader elevates it to a status that makes it appear better than what it actually was because were Star Wars fans and waiting for that to happen. Not to mention return of the Jedi and empire being very campy. Carrie Fisher and the guys were just tremendous actors and the story line in empire was great. A New Hope is my favorite SW movie but I think I like Rise of Skywalker the best. The visuals are the best. The acting overall is better than any acting in the prequels (Evan McGregor and Christopher Lee had great performances). People act like characters like general grevious didnt come out of nowhere. There’s so many things to debate but most people complaining didn’t go into this movie with an open mind so it wouldn’t matter. Arguments that people have about this movie shows that they are victims of nostalgia because most Star Wars movies haven’t been great compared to other films.

The mandalorian has more weight than the new Star Wars movie

As the episodes of The Mandalorian progressed it just got better and better. There are so many tangential stories that can be told regarding so many characters to last for a very long time. Hopefully, Disney will come to the realization that the Star Wars universe needs to return to it’s origins in terms of quality and following the road map created by George for IV, V, & VI. It should be called the "Death" of Skywalker........ it pretty much destroyed the legacy of the Skywalkers and killed every single one of them. The most POSITIVE character in the Star Wars history Luke Skywalker has been turned into a most NEGATIVE loser! In the end the EVIL side won as the decedent of the Dark Emperor Palpatine survived and even stole the name Skywalker........ WTF!!
That really is a giant flaw that I haven't seen talked about a lot. In all the press, in all the promotion, everyone said it was an uplifting ending. But, Palpetine's death isn't final, Rey is a young, strong force user that is now alone and desperate, just as she was in the beginning of the franchise, and now she knows she could have limitless power like her grandfather (father? literally can't even comprehend that palpatine fucks let alone his bloodline) if she just goes to the dark side. So Palpetine could easily un-die again, fuck with Rey's head just like he did Ben, and turn her to the dark side, especially now she has no one to turn to. Ta-da, nothing was solved by the ENTIRE STAR WARS FRANCHISE. This garbage movie was so nostalgia focused it tripped on its own feet and let the Sith win the long game. Jesus Christ was anybody who worked on the script of this movie even a fan of the franchise?
@@slugboy7970 Exactly, the movie also has gone back & forth a few times what would happen if Palpetine "dies". Would all the Dark Power concentrated into Rey & Palpetine would take over her body? or Palpetine "died" again & they can pretend nothing happened.
Plus, with the cheap way they bring Palpetine back, they can always bring him back again in the future just "because". Then any achievement of any of the heroes will become a joke again because Palpetine the Freddy Krueger will always come back.
Don’t worry, kylo’s force ghost impregnated Rey with that kiss.
She connected with Luke. Leah was her teacher. Kylo was the son of her teacher and they were intimately linked across the trilogy. For a girl / woman who never had a family the Skywalker name seems to be one that closest fits. She obviously never knew her parents and despised everything about Palpetine so why would she choose to carry that name. As we become adults we choose who we allow to be close with us. In a sense we choose what our family will be. That’s what she did.

The moment when Rey heals the serpent and as he happily leaves them alone, he manage to create an opening for the gang to escape, was the moment I gave up on this movie.
Too be honest once they announced Palpatine was alive, I lost all interest in ever seeing this movie. Since Episode: VII I have felt like they was undermining the legacy of the original films. Them bringing back Palpatine confirmed that to me. Disney (In my best Anakin on Mustafar voice) I will forever hate you for what you done to my favorite franchise.

Hell, even bringing back Palpatine, the dumbest decision of all Star Wars history, could have been acceptable if it was written in such a way that we could somehow accept. The cloning or transferal of his consciousness into an AI are ideas I might accept but only if they wrote a good enough explanation into it. I still don't like the idea in general as they spent 2 movies building up Kylo Ren... just have him be the villain. You know what, never mind, I don't care.

FWIW, I'm part of that group way back who predicted JJ Abrams would cock up Star Wars just like he did with his fantasy-fi version of Star Trek. He made it clear he doesn't understand there's a clear difference between the genres of "Science Fiction" (that attempts to operate within hypothetical and theoretical devices of futuristic science), and "Fantasy Fiction" that tells the audience it's not intended as a heady think piece. Abrams (and modern writers like him) just don't get it... that no matter how mind-blowing cool it looks on screen, audiences really do give a damn when the story-line is replete with open-ended question, plot holes, cannon conflicts and just pointless subplots seemingly going nowhere.

I think the problems come from the previous 2 movies. The setup in those already show the audience that the force is now overpowered compared with the other trilogies. Having to use that setup is what leads to most of the issues. Apart from having to accept what went before, the rest were minor niggles. This one was the best of the last 3, but that's not saying much lol
Force healing for example. I'm sure no one would mind if it was used for minor injuries . But instantly in this movie they're just bringing the dead back and healing mortal wounds. That's because the previous 2 movies just seemed to allow force users to do anything. All they needed was one line about someone asking how force users can do all this now, And someone else giving the excuse

Mark Hamill wanted the film to go very differently, and I agree with him. They threw the main Three away (Han, Leia, Luke). The three were never in a scene together which ruined everything for me and probably many other fans.

She didn't fly. She used the Force to pull herself back to the ship in zero gravity. Completely different than Mary Poppins.
That wasn't a particularly good scene, just a random scene thrown in to cover up prior giant plot holes and justify the second light saber which was ultimately necessary to the conclusion of the movie.
That scene should simply have been edited out. The person responsible for that scene should be 're-assigned.'

Disney just felt like adding a bunch of powers to the force that no Jedi has ever possessed but apparently Rey is stronger than any other Jedi despite the fact that she was never even properly trained 😂😂. You could say luke taught her “some” things even though he was only in one movie in the new trilogy.
Even in THE LAST JEDI when Luke uses the force to create a “fake luke” I thought it was a bit overboard but it is LUKE Skywalker so I gave that a pass and he did die or aka became one with the “force”. 😂😂 all these random powers coming out of nowhere... imagine how many times all these powers would’ve been useful in the past!!! Also the whole force healing thing kind of breaks StarWars. The entirety of StarWars is based around the rise and fall of Anakin Skywalker and that is entirely based around his trying to save Padme from death. The entire reason Anakin turned to the dark side was because Jedi couldn't heal people or save them from dieing, so he turned to the dark side because palpatine promised him that.
Now that The Rise of Skywalker put in force healing, why didn't Anakin just learn force healing... Then he never would've turned to the dark side and StarWars wouldn't have had the same story at all.

JJ the rehash master really didn't have much to work with after Ruin made TLJ. For that, ROS seems rushed, jumbled and spliced together on the editing floor with no development and an empty feeling. Garbage
RJ only continued on the path that Jar Jar Abrams started. I'm not sure that even Yoda, Obi-wan, and Luke together could have recovered the wreckage that Abrams left behind

The character Snoke is also bad written in TFA. He Feels like a cheap huge copy of the emperor.
I am glad Johnson killed him, so we can focus on the only good new character from tfa: Kylo Ren.

Lazy writing states it perfectly. The one that got me the worst was when entire fleet of star destroyers comprising the most advanced space force in the galaxy was literally grounded by the lack of a single radio tower. In real life they would have war gamed that scenario a few thousand times. For some reason that one bothered me even more than Ray not being sad after Kilo died. It's almost as if the entire script was written by a committee and a runner was told to record all the writing sessions and some one accidentally switched that tape with the final script.

Palpatine drains the life force out of Rey and Ben to make himself stronger, but then doesn't kill them? They are completely at his mercy, completely powerless to do ANYTHING, but he just decides to stop draining their life force and let them collapse to the ground ALIVE. Then Rey picks up Leia's lightsaber (which she apparently has now, cause she's also a Jedi now, but not entirely because she got too scared by her son's switch to the dark side???) and she tries to defend herself from Palpatine's lightning. She struggles immensely, but finds the strength to also pick up Anakin's lightsaber and now all of a sudden she's able to easily reflect the lightning and kill Palpatine, who doesn't think to stop shooting lightning or dodge Rey's attack because he's a dumb dumb now... So. Cheap.

By the time he had realized what was going on, Vader had already thrown him. That being said, there's plenty to criticize about the OT as well. Just not as much as there is to criticize about ROS.

Compare Kylo to Darth Maul. Maul had a way scarier on screen presence.

Me and my friend saw the movie and when we walked out to catch the train he asked me what was the point of the movie ? At that moment I realize shit I’m just as lost as you are.

This movie had TOO MANY PLOT HOLES! The plot holes should had been explained as a two part movie.
Imagine The Russo Bros gave the Marvel fans the finger & just settled with Infinity War.
Throwing all the Endgame storyline and mash it together in the 2 in a half hour Infinity War movie🤣

#KEVIN FEIGE ....that’s funny someone mention recently they should have done what Harry Potter did with the last film and split it into two. The problem is Disney wanted Star Wars movies every 2 years while Solo, Rouge One where supposed to be in between. But still i just went to see it to get it out of my system I’m just mad that at this point Disney have officially made me be disinterested in Star Wars

Rise of Skywalker sucked. I wanted the movie to end. I agree the writing was lazy! The pacing was rubbish and too many leaks so I felt nothing except disappointment .

I thought it was the best of these last 3 Iron Taylor. This hasn't been the best trilogy though, sadly. I think the problems with this movie come from the setup of the previous 2, with the things that been established in those. E.g force users can just do anything now. That wasn't this movies fault! But they could have had a line questioning why that is the case though, with someone saying it's be sure there's so few Jedi alive now, or whatever excuse reason they wanted.. This one felt like it should have been the plot of the whole 3 films but in the end they had to cram in into 1 movie. Overall, it was an OK movie. Certainly not the disaster that was the last jedi

The better remake (and for a moment I thought the story arc was heading this way) would have been Rey loses herself to the darkside after killing Chewy, using force lightning, developing her anger, and decides to kill Palpatine. Kylo mends his relationship with Lea (would have been the theatre moment of the century), comes back as Ben....a Skywalker...and fights Darth Rey...

I agree with everything you said. It’s easy to tell Disney did not have a plan and only used nostalgia to fuel hype around their movie.
I feel like TROS tried too hard to give the expected good ending while also trying to connect all the dots.
Like the whole scene at the start with the spy then revealing that Hux was the spy 45 minute's later didn't make any sense to me. There should have been a build up, like them getting a transmission from him during TLJ, giving them advice or something.
Personally, I think that TFA is the best out of the sequels because, to me, it's grounded. You could see what was going to happen, there wasn't anything revealed, I even enjoyed when Han was killed by Kylo. There was a reason behind it.
That's what TROS lacks, reason. There's no reason for Rey to be able to force heal, there's no reason for the main baddie (who we originally thought was Snoke) to be Palpatine. There was no reason behind the ending which was horrific to watch.
There were plenty of chances to kill Kylo off in the first 2 but instead they do it at the end. They could've made it that Kylo died in the first one, Rey discovers that she has the connection with him and then spends the movies finding out why then trying to bring him back or something. I would've loved that.
Anyway, I appreciated the callback to when Anakin was trying to save Padme, but it didn't feel right to me. You could tell that Padme and Anakin; and Han and Leia had something there. You could feel their love for each other. But for me, there wasn't much there for Reylo. I shit you not, I wanted Reylo to happen because it was gonna be when Kylo turns good, but there wasn't a build up to them kissing at the end. I didn't want Kylo dead because he was probably the best character out of the newer ones. You could see the conflict he was going through throughout the movies and you could see exactly when he decided to turn good. Sacrificing himself to revive Rey showed his dedication to her (even though we only saw his care of her in the force communication) but undid the work put into his bendemption arc.
This has turned into a rant and I am soooo fucking sorry to the poor soul who read this
You were correct this movie truly sucked it seemed like an early trailer of a fighting game.
Plothole: the movie.
I feel like the movie was just a lot of fan service and retcon it feels like 2 giant movies crammed into one
The only two things I have to say is that:
(1) If you realize that two people came aboard your ship trying to disable the ONE lightspeed tracker you had, you would naturally then think to develop that technology and spread it across every ship as a backup.
(2) Before going under the quicksand, Finn was not going to confess his feelings. He was going to tell Rey that he felt that he was force-sensitive. That is what built on him during his first battle in The Force Awakens and that is what made him determine which ship had the main control tower.
