I just finished this book, and I'm picking up the second one tomorrow. It makes me a little sad reading the comments because I LOVED the book. I was obsessed with the way Stephanie Garber explained scarlets emotions through color, it was beautiful. Although Scarlett was overly naive at some points, it was because she really only had one goal, and it was to protect her sister. I also really liked her relationship with Julian, I feel like it helped her character devlop into something strong and passionate, things she lacked in the beginning. I absolutely cannot wait for the movie to come out, but I don't know how it will come close to the magic Stephanie Garber wrote.
It's soooooo different from The Night Circus though. I didn't really like The Night Circus, since it's so slow paced, but the writing is more poetic, I feel. Caraval is more adventure based, the writing style is beautiful but more direct and simple. Caraval is one of my favorite books.
I felt the same. Though I enjoyed Night Circus, it was poetic and atmospheric...I much prefered Caraval. The characters I found to be more intriguing and it constantly held my interest. Adored it, one of my favourites also
For everyone saying the metaphors and similes didn’t make any sense, you aren’t thinking hard enough. a quote from the book I think it was “he tasted like ashes and lies” for example, was basically like saying he tasted mysterious. Imo. It’s all about the way you perceive the metaphor and how you relate to it, or how you’ve experienced something similar. Think deeper.
I just finished Caraval a couple of days ago, and I loved it! I was worried that it would let me down, and there were times where I was a little irritated with Scarlett's character earlier on (not that she should've been written any other way, but there were times when she came across more argumentative than I personally felt necessary; at the same time, I still couldn't fault her for it, given the circumstances). I loved the writing, and though others have criticized the heck out of it because of "purple prose", I feel purple prose on its own isn't the problem; it's when it's overused that's the problem. I figure if people can't wrap their head around phrases like "tastes like midnight", they probably shouldn't be reading fantasy. For one, so many flavours came to mind when I read that part; for two, I'm just tired of people expecting writers to fit into this narrow little box of what is and isn't acceptable. There's a difference between the technical know-how of writing, and writing style. Sadly, a lot of people get the two confused, and assume that if the style is different from the formula they're used to, then the writing is "wrong".Sorry, went on a bit of a rant there, lol. ^^; Anyway, the point is, I loved it, and I really liked your review. Out of curiosity, what did you think of the balance between Scarlett's independence and the romance? Particularly how she could have the best of both, without having to sacrifice one for the other (which we see so often in YA)? I really liked it, myself. Made for a nice change of pace. :)Sorry for the super long post! ^^;
Hence why I came to your review. You are Booktube's resident Night Court expert, so I particularly valued your opinion in a YA book compared so heavily to it. You've actually persuaded me to give it a try.
the Barnes and Noble I shop at stocked this book a week early, and I picked it up on the 26th. I absolutely loved it and the atmosphere was to die for! It's one of the best books I've read in a while and I can't wait to see where the rest of the series goes as well as the potential for film!
I loved this book so much! I had the same experience- I'm usually able to guess what's going to happen early on in most of the books I read but I was so excited and surprised by the things that kept being revealed. And I was living for the descriptions of everything! The chocolate, the roses, the EVERYTHING!!!
Alright, I just finished it. Yes it's amazing. Thank you for encouraging me to read it. I did think it was different from the NIght Circus. I agree Caraval is more fast paced. The magic is wonderful.
I’m currently reading this book and absolutely love it but I wanted to know what others think of it and I deadass think you’re the most reliable person so I was so happy to find that you did a review on it
I saw Caraval in a bookstore and I didn´t plan on reading it, but then I watched a video where you talked about it and it sounded so promising. I read it and I´m so glad that I did. I loved the setting and the whole feeling that goes along with it.
I completely agree that Caraval isn't like The Night Circus. The stories of both are marvelous but they're very different books. Loved the Caraval series, I can't get it out of my head ✨ and btw, I wish Julian was a true person 😍
i tried reading this book. i have been disappointed by many books lately so unless it's from a select few aurhors i get it from the library first. i was excited to read it becuase it sounded good based off the info on the jacket. at first its pretty good. descriptive world building, magical things going on. then maybe halfway or so through it took a sharp nose dive. i had to eject from finishing the book becuase i didn't like the characters anymore
I'm dying for this book - they said it was like The Night Circus, and I appreciate honest reviewers pointing out it's very different, but tho the idea of it being like my favorite book might have drawn me near, the blurb stands on its own and I have been dying to read it for about 6 months.
Sadly, i was really disappointed with this book. The writing was quite beautiful and whimsical, but also sometimes the metaphors were confusing and didn't make sense. Further the way she used colour to described feelings I felt was kind of slack/or a lazy way of describing scarletts feelings and really just made me feel a disconnect from Scarlett's personality and feelings overall. Scarlett Was a fairly boring and basic character that just lacked personality, her only concern was her sister but even that was constantly told, but rarely shown. If anything the only thing that I could applause was the setting, outside of Caraval it was lacking, but within it was quite amazing and vivid. I hope the next novel will be an improvement considering this was a debt :)
I think the reason why Scarlett uses colour to describe feelings is because she had synesthesia. I don't know if it's ever been confirmed, but I think that's why.
SO EXITED FOR THIS BOOK! I'm won an arc and am literally waiting by my door every morning for it! Loved this review also! 💙💙💙 Also so so glad to hear about the diversity 🙏🏽
This is one that caught my attention a while back when people started mentioning it, so I can't wait for it to be released. We seem to have similar tastes in books, so hearing that you loved it just cemented my decision to buy it when it comes out. Great video, as always!
I recently got this book! It's amazing! The first time I held this it really caught me... Like the games, it reminds me of the hunger games and simply caraval reminds me of the night circus. PLUS it was about sisters! Like no fighting but caring sisters. I'm not a fan of the writing but it was perfect for this book! The cliche didn't really bother me... I mean first of Julian and Scarlett, to be honest, was a little cliche but that is one of the few reasons why I love their dynamics. THE TWISTS! Damn... I thought I've gotten the grip of everything suddenly the book then slapped me. It wasn't a bad for a debut novel but there's also room to improve so I can't wait for the second book to be even better!
I´m not very good at making reviews and critics about books but i like this book, it was really fun to read and magical, i enjoy very much i read in one day.
Thanks for the review, I can't wait to get my hands on this. I will be getting the UK version though because the foil covers on the hardcovers are so beautiful!
Hannah i am so glad u didn't find Scarlett annoying because contrary to the majority,i absolutely loved her character. I've always loved the elder sibling eldest child characters who often have their gaurds up and often a bit too hesitant before jumping into adventures. They shoulder souch responsibility and i understand they can come off a bit frustrating at times, but it's there inherent nature not to be too reckless
I have read Caraval and I enjoyed it but didn’t love it. I definitely agree that Stephanie Garner did a fantastic job with the setting. I didn’t feel attached to the characters and that’s really important to me so that’s why it wasn’t my favorite. I’m happy you loved it!❣️
This is definatly my favorite series. It's the only time when I've reada book and could not put it down, like I stayed up, skipped studying time to read this book. The same goes for the rest int he series and Stephanie's spin off Once Upon A Broken Heart. I can't wait to read the Ballad of Never After. I thinbk Stephanie might be my new favorite author...
I kinda liked it, but something about the mc just did not sit right with me. The 3rd person perspective helped it though, because that somehow made it less cliché, I think.
I really enjoyed Night Circus but I really didn't like the romance in that, too insta lovely. But doesn't sound like it will be a problem with this one.
I really want to give this a try cause I didn’t like The Night Circus, as it was beautifully written and had great world building but the actual plot and characters were so flat. Hoping this can give me a little more of what I need, but I’ve seen such mixed reviews...
*sigh* I'd like to preface this by saying The Night Circus is literally one of my all time. I love The Night Circus with burning fiery passion. So when I was told Caraval was "Perfect for fans of Night Circus" I hopped on it so fast and my expectations went outrageously high. Part of it might be my fault for having such high expectations for the book but I was sorely disappointed... The characters were annoying, there was a severe lack of world building, the writing at times I felt like the author was trying too hard to make it beautiful and whimsical but at times it came off as confusing because the metaphors made literally no sense.
I read the first six chapters in a sampler and wasn't the biggest fan of the writing. It felt a bit young and repetitive at first, particularly with the main characters voice. Does this change/progress further into the story? I'm not going to judge it completely on six chapters, and I am definitely curious, as the plot and atmosphere sounds intriguing.
Well I finished caraval but I think I'm the only one here who wasn't excpecting the book to be like this. And I mean that i didn't like as much as y'all are saying and tgat makes me so sad. I just can't love it but I definatly will give it a go to the next sequels. So yeah
I loved your review and can't wait to read it. Preordering today. I can't help being distracted by your lipstick. It's so pretty! Do you happen to remember what it is? Thanks!
I think I’ll enjoy this more than the night circus because though I very much loved the night circus I just thought it was quite slow that’s why I gave it 4 stars
Sadly this book was a huge dissapointment for me. I really liked the setting and magic, but characters and romance was such a cliche to me. They annoyed and bored me to death T_T
They were cliche... it was funny and interesting to me but of course its not really my favorite part of the book (Which is rare cause I'm a sucker for romance) it was the mystery... Like SO MANY QUESTIONS
Caraval was good. Kinda disappointed or just bummed by the fact everything was an act the whole time. But thats what I like about this book is the fact that it warned me so many times not to get swept far away. And it’s the whole theme for the book. Legendary, on the other hand was eh. It was the same stuff in Caraval. At least thats what it felt for me. Like Legendary was just a huge copy of Caraval but rewritten. Except just change the characters and the protagonist. And add a few more plot twists. And there were tooo many plot twists all at once. Don’t get me wrong, I love when twists and turns happen but not when they’re constantly being thrown at you. Readers of the book are gonna get what I’m talking about (not gonna spoil) Reminded me of J.k in Fantastic Beasts 2 lol. I haven’t finished Finale just yet soooo ye.
Even though this is YA, would someone who enjoys ASoIaF and LOTR like something like this. I want to get it as a bday present today for myself today since its out today as well but idk.
I love your reviews Hannah and I tend to agree with you on most books, but I'm going to have to disagree with you on this one. Everyone's entitled to their opinion of course, but this book just didn't do it for me. There was barely any world building - definitely not enough for me to care much about the world; I didn't connect to any of the characters; the romance was instalove-y and not very believable; the plot was too fast and at the same time it felt like nothing was happening, and there was way too much mystery. The Night Circus had a lot of mystery too but it gave answers at just the perfect intervals, whereas here there just weren't any answers. Also the big twist at the end seemed totally random - I found Tella amazingly irritating and without giving spoilers I just didn't think her reasons were good enough for everything she did. Yes her father was abusive but her plan was stupidly dangerous, more than I thought was warranted. (Sorry about the marathon post but this book just annoyed me so much!)
definitely wasnt my favorite. the plot was good, but this book helped me learn that i dont like when magic is used like how it is in there. i prefer supernatural or something. i dropped it after 80 pages
I wanted to read it in the original language, but I'm afraid it might be difficult for non-native speakers, so I ask those who have read it how is the language and writing style? It wouldn't be the first book I've read in English :)
Somewhat somewhat. The characters do go to these places throughout the book. Although she doesn't explain bit by bit in the story, it is good to check back every once in awhile to see where the characters ended up for a night.
I don't really liked CARAVAL, since the beginning i was hoping Scarlett would end up with legend cause of how she's been writing to him since she was a child, it's like a magical connection that would've been beautiful if they find each other.
I really want to read Caraval but I am not sure if it’s ok for me to read because I’m only 13 years old (mature, I think). In your opinion, do you think that the content is suitable for me?
I hated this book. Huge disappointment. I liked the writing but I hated the plot, and both the sister and the ending were absolutely ridiculous. And I loved the night Circus. So 2 star read for me
Alyssa Gaul how did you enjoy the night circus then? As the characters had very little personality in that book and the plot was extremely underwhelming
I just finished this book, and I'm picking up the second one tomorrow. It makes me a little sad reading the comments because I LOVED the book. I was obsessed with the way Stephanie Garber explained scarlets emotions through color, it was beautiful. Completely agree!!
@Sarah h really? A movie of Caraval is going to come out?
I loved her too!
There's a movie coming out???!!!
Yes! She was cautious at the WRONG places. Seriously 🤦♀️
I absolutely loved Caraval! It was a magical reading experience 😍
Alexa Loves Books Same! I'm in such a book hangover and I need something like it! Loved Caraval more than the Night Circus!
Absolutely Alexa totally agree with you!

I absolutely agree
Lol I hated it 💀
And I'm with you on 3rd person POV. I prefer that over 1st person. I feel like you can expand the story more that way
Create&Dream Yes I absolutely agree!
I wondered if the author has synthesia as I'm reading this so far. Meanings are often hard to comprehend.
I just finished Caraval a couple of days ago, and I loved it! Heii...I'm planning to start it ...but I'm not into spice...does this book contains more spice...? what's the trope??
Scarlett really annoyed me, but I loved Julian. He was so interesting. I loved the mystery aspect.
Agree to disagree. I loved scarlet and I related to her a lot with everything she went through.
Yez
Just curious why don't you like scarlet I just started reading the book I'm just wondering
I agree. She’s such a “pick me girl”. It’s making me not want to continue the series
I cried so much for Julien I really hoped he wasn't dead! I think I got too much attached with him
Caravan is one of my favorite books of all time but I wish it was longer. :(
It's the first in a series.
Hence why I came to your review. You are Booktube's resident Night Court expert, so I particularly valued your opinion in a YA book compared so heavily to it. You've actually persuaded me to give it a try.
Ren Cardale night circus?

I become obsessed with books because of you lol, i just bought Caraval and currently reading Six of Crows!

My neighbor Stephanie wrote this book and I cant wait to finish this book. So far its pretty good!
Sadly, i was really disappointed with this book. The writing was quite beautiful and whimsical, but also sometimes the metaphors were confusing and didn't make sense. Actually the color thing makes a lot of sense, it will be cleared in the third book
SO EXITED FOR THIS BOOK! I'm won an arc and am literally waiting by my door every morning for it! Loved this review also! 💙💙💙 Also so so glad to hear about the diversity 🙏🏽
I'm about 80 pages in and I'm loving it✌✌

Gorgeous cover! I'm glad you enjoyed it :)
One of my favorite trilogies! Glad you've also loved it.
I read a sample of this back in the summer and immediately pre-ordered it.......I can't wait
I´m not very good at making reviews and critics about books but i like this book, it was really fun to read and magical, i enjoy very much i read in one day.

Caraval sounds fantastic! I'm definitely buying it in January :D
Waooo your thumbnails are really eye catching showing ur love to the books
I have read Caraval and I enjoyed it but didn’t love it. I definitely agree that Stephanie Garner did a fantastic job with the setting. I didn’t feel attached to the characters and that’s really important to me so that’s why it wasn’t my favorite. I’m happy you loved it!❣️
Finished this last night! 5 Stars it was fantastic. I can not wait for the next installment! I to read this in two settings!
Thanks to your review I will definitely buy this book soooo HUGE THANK YOU and MERRY CHRISTMAS 🎄🎅⛄❄
Definitely agree that is has similar atmosphere to The Night Circus but the plot/pacing/characters are much different. It was a great book!

I want to read this so much
Abby Rose I hope you enjoy it!! 😊
I actually bought the book because of you and other BookTubers, haven't started it yet though
I'm so excited to read Caraval, I also really want to read Night Circus ❤
Emily Angelique The Night Circus is so beautiful.
I loved this book and I loved that you loved this book!
Now I'm even more excited to read this book!
princesslibraries Yayyy!!! 😊💖
I read the first four chapters on net galley and read them twice! I need this book so badly
I can't wait to pick up a copy of Caraval when it comes out 💙
I kinda liked it, but something about the mc just did not sit right with me. The 3rd person perspective helped it though, because that somehow made it less cliché, I think.
Can't wait for january! This book sounds so good!
I really enjoyed Night Circus but I really didn't like the romance in that, too insta lovely. But doesn't sound like it will be a problem with this one.
Great review! I officially want to read this book. 👍🏼
That book seems very adventures, mysterious, and I think I might be intrested
Great review! I can't wait to read this book. :)
jenthelibrarian Thank you! 😄
I really want to give this a try cause I didn’t like The Night Circus, as it was beautifully written and had great world building but the actual plot and characters were so flat. Hoping this can give me a little more of what I need, but I’ve seen such mixed reviews...
Okay I was already drawn to this book but now I want to read it like right now hahaha, thanks !
*sigh*

Okay. I'm ready to read it now.
I just finished this book and it was sooooo good!!
Loved this book!!!! Wanna read the 2nd one now!!!! 📖📖📚📚❤️❤️💕💕
Sounds like a mix of hunger games and the video of Britney Spears circus
Nahhh.... hunger games is more tense... this is tense but different. It was my first thought as well
Sounds incredible! Thank you for the review
Phoebe Thank you for watching! 😊😊
I loved your review and can't wait to read it. Preordering today. I can't help being distracted by your lipstick. It's so pretty! Do you happen to remember what it is? Thanks!
I'm 99% sure it's the NARS matte lip pencil in Cruella!
A Clockwork Reader Thanks!
i feel like this book at so much potential and the author just threw the book in the trash at the end
Sounds interesting. Can't wait till it comes out
Loved the book! Couldn't stop reading it!
I think I’ll enjoy this more than the night circus because though I very much loved the night circus I just thought it was quite slow that’s why I gave it 4 stars
I loved this whole book, I'm obsessed.
Sadly this book was a huge dissapointment for me. I really liked the setting and magic, but characters and romance was such a cliche to me. They annoyed and bored me to death T_T
Juli-Yashka yeah i semi agree with you
Juli-Yashka yeah I really thought that the characters were very dry and uninteresting
Juli-Yashka I wasn't fond of Tella, but I loved Julian!
I don´t agreed , for me the romance was very simple and normal , i so tired of Twilight kind romances and this is something very different.

Is this series has happily ever after??
You just said everything I wanted to so I can just share this video instead of explaining. Thanks.
i love the book so far it is so amazing

Also the big twist at the end seemed totally random - I found Tella amazingly irritating and without giving spoilers I just didn't think her reasons were good enough for everything she did. Yes her father was abusive but her plan was stupidly dangerous, more than I thought was warranted. (Sorry about the marathon post but this book just annoyed me so much!)
I really liked the book..at times it was unputdownable..but in the end it felt it lacked something..
definitely wasnt my favorite. the plot was good, but this book helped me learn that i dont like when magic is used like how it is in there. i prefer supernatural or something. i dropped it after 80 pages
this sounds so interesting !!
I am convinced! Can't wait to read. Thanks!
Isabel Story Mangum Yay! I hope you enjoy it 😊
I saw this book at the mall today and now I regret not getting it
I'm nearly finished reading this book I'm loving it so much I hope there's more to come
I’m Brazilian and I’m trying to read this but I’ve to confess , there’re many difficult words to me 😢
I wanted to read it in the original language, but I'm afraid it might be difficult for non-native speakers, so I ask those who have read it how is the language and writing style? It wouldn't be the first book I've read in English :)
This book was something else just full of suprises
In the beginning in the book there is a map do you need it while reading the story?
Somewhat somewhat. The characters do go to these places throughout the book. Although she doesn't explain bit by bit in the story, it is good to check back every once in awhile to see where the characters ended up for a night.
I don't really liked CARAVAL, since the beginning i was hoping Scarlett would end up with legend cause of how she's been writing to him since she was a child, it's like a magical connection that would've been beautiful if they find each other.
are you hearing yourself rn 💀
I really want to read Caraval but I am not sure if it’s ok for me to read because I’m only 13 years old (mature, I think). In your opinion, do you think that the content is suitable for me?
Is there any fantasy books with no magic??
Larissa Surace This one is actually pretty limited on the magic
My favorite charakter is donatella
scarlett was a stick in the mud but omg the world was stunning and amazing
I personally didn't like the Night Circus, but I love the idea of magical circus, so I'm really looking forward to it!
WoolfsWhistle This has a very different pace so hopefully you'll enjoy this one! 💕
I AM SO ANNNOOOOOYEEED. WHY WOULD YOU GIVE US HOPEEE FOR TELLAA AND JACKS i freacking tought they would have a happy ending BRO I CANTTT😤😤😤😫😫😫😫😣
This is one of the best books I’ve ever read Scarlett kindaaa annoying lol
I hated this book. Huge disappointment. I liked the writing but I hated the plot, and both the sister and the ending were absolutely ridiculous. And I loved the night Circus. So 2 star read for me
Alyssa Gaul how did you enjoy the night circus then? As the characters had very little personality in that book and the plot was extremely underwhelming
IKR THE ENDING WAS TRASH
Yes! Thank you! I hated the ending so much!
I hated the cover. It was so dark and sparse that it contrasted with all the vivid color imagery.
