WHAT ARE SOME ALTERNATIVES TO TOSSING THE GARTER?
The fact is, the garter toss is really a way to involve the groom and give him a bit of attention. They like that. But this can still be done with or without a garter. Just be a little creative. If the bride tosses her bouquet -- why can't the groom toss his boutonniere? Sounds good to me. Or his bowtie, or better his armband if he's wearing one -- you know, its like a little garter really, that you wear around your arm to keep your shirt sleeves up so they don't hang lower than your jacket cuff. And let's face it, its much more practical -- the bachelor who catches it may actually have some use for it -- not like a garter -- unless he's that way inclined.
    The balloon drop
The balloon garter drop is a good one. It does work best where there are high ceilings though. What happens is the garter (which the bride won't even have worn) is put into a smallish blown up balloon, then that balloon and lots of other little blown up balloons are put into a big blown up balloon which is suspended from the high ceiling. The groom comes along with a long pole which has a pin on the end and he pops the big balloon, all the smaller balloon fall down and the awaiting bachelors search madly, popping the balloons, looking for thee balloon with the garter in it. Its so much fun, it's a real laugh, and the bride can get to sit back and relax and let the boys get on with their fun.

    Basket of garters
This is something else you could do - have a basket of garters which the groom hands out to each of the bachelors while the bride has a basket of roses to hand out to each of the single ladies. Yes, it is a bit more expensive but it doesn't leave anyone out -- it's really sweet.
    Sweet throw
Now this is sweet - if the groom is adamant about wanting to throw -- something -- how about he throw lollies out to the guests -- you know like those chocolate kisses, or the wedding favours, maybe small stuffed toys, gift cards, little trinkets like that. It gets everyone really excited.
    Make it interesting
If you still like the idea of the garter but aren't keen on the public removal part of it -- do that bit in private and then have the toss. But how about making it a little interesting -- pin some cash to the garter, or involve everyone, not just the single guys. Just remember, traditions aren't rules that can't be broken. They change and develop -- so make them suit yourselves and your guests -- and be creative.
