I just ordered the gen2 wharncliffe for ≈130 after tax and shipping... And im planning on ordering OG aluminum scales after i have it on hand and know what texture i want. In total ill only be 200 in on it and it will probably be my favorite knife. Go Hogue!!!
I have gotten away from lubing my knives. The only thing I do is clean them. I seem to have way less issues with action and no need to reach for lube. No area for dust/dirty to get attracted to. With you polishing the washers you accomplished 90%. The bar/axis locks from Benchmade/Hogue seem to develop stick initially. I polish the bar and it goes away.
I am thinking more and more that it is better to just lightly swab with a Q-tip a very little bit on bearings and washers, and to not use oil on lock bars at all. I will experiment with not using oil at all the next time I clean the deka. Thanks!
This is just the video I needed. I’m about to service my magnacut deka, it’s gotten a bit gunky. And it’s never had that good drop shut action that my benchmades have.
Bought two Deka's over the last few months, and replaced the scales on both with Original Goat ones. Full disassembly and cleaning before install, lubed up with Gunny Glide, and the action is absolutely superb. That extra 1/4" or so made a big difference, specially for my XL hands. Well worth the upgrade.
I’m strongly considering buying the Hogue Deka/Magnacut and have already been looking at upgrading the scales to OG. What XL’s did you go with, and do you still like them?
my deka does this from factory. im curious if I can replace the crossbar lock because it kinda hurts my index finger when I reverse flick with my middle
Added OG scales yesterday and didn’t even feel like taking it apart . The insert a driver into the pivot method worked well for me . I’ve done a few of these crossbars and learned of the action is good not to mess with the washers flipping them around .
Same re the OG scales. It's a different knife and so much for the better. I didn't expect it to dethrone my AD 20.5 or PM3 for pocket time,. but it's just a better knife than either of them.
So as you probably know the rough side of the washers should be facing your blade and the smooth side of the washers should face the liners. Easy to feel with your fingers.
My magnacut deka came out of the box with waaaaay better than my bugout had when I got it. The bugout was tight AF and only started working properly when I polished the washers with diamond paste. The deka had great action but I went ahead and polished the nice big washers inside there so that I could run it with the pivot tighter. Got the OG aluminium scales for it, which. Eliminated the flex in the pivot that you get with FRN knives and I swear the action is better, it’s def one of my favourite knives now ❤ Wish I got the wharnie tho, I like the clip point but I’m more of a wharnie guy, unfortunately wasn’t in stock when I bought it
Few things. Shouldve cleaned the scales. And also with sanding. Put everything away as the dust goes everywhere. Then should've cleaned the scales after sanding. All that dust stuck into everything. Dunno. Just feels like it defeated the point of cleaning everything. The edges where you sanded also look very rough. And not nice at all.
Finally picked one of these magnacut deka s up for a bill on sale at my local . I got to pick a knife finally so out of 4 they were pretty much the same except one really stood out like it’s been broken in . Happy so far and ordered the OG scales . We ll see . I thought the magnacut sharpened too easily for magnacut , and strop . Prob not heat treated to potential but I ll use it and let the community know .
@@DullPoints scales fit perfect . I think I had a burnt edge . It took 4 Sharpening s to get it where I wanted . It’s nice but I hardly carry it . I usually grab a spyderco . I’m a tried and true person I guess and don’t try the latest greatest too often or I got some bad magnacut from hogue . Who knows
My g10 magnacut just needed more oil on the washers and after about 20 actions or so its now smooth and buttery. Glad I didn't have to disassemble it. Also you put the pivot on backwards
My magnacut Deka is a work in progress 😅. Got the black clip point and swapped out to expanded XL OG scales. Awaiting fully jimped back spacer. Sloooooowly loosening up. Gotta give the washers the once over. Now I lost the pivot tightening screw 🤬🤬. Keeping my eye out for a complete hardware kit, if there will ever be one😅. Not as popular as other brands to warrant extra aftermarket support…YET.
You lost the pivot screw? 😂 Good luck getting replacement parts. Hogue used so much Loctite it's apparent they don't want you opening their knives. But just a matter of time before someone starts making them.
Ah, that sucks, I've done that a few times. I now always work on a soft surface, so if I drop a screw it won't bounce anywhere. And I always have magnets on hand.

I did another video where I switch out this knife for anyone aluminum Goat Scales and it really makes this knife so much better. They have a lot of choices. Check them out!
When I close my Deka I keep nicking my palm. The handle is just the right length that my hand has to curl around the back end and the pinkie side of my hand gets in the way. Not a good fidget knife.
Holy taking it apart like I just did in this video is a good way to start. Get some good lube and polish the washers but don't lube the access lock, just the washers. Adjust the blade pivet so that there is no play play but at the same time you want it as loose as you can get it.
@@iv8976try blowing it out with a canned duster and just work the hell out of the action, really smack it around, for a few days first. It’ll most likely wear in just fine. Imo this wasn’t the cleanest polish job and all the dust hurt my feelings a bit. Loved the dad joke though.
Magnacut has better edge retention, is tougher, stronger, and much more water resistant than s30v. I also find Magnacut easier to put a scary edge on. Sticky sharp. Magnacuts combination of vanadium, nitrogen, and niobium is quite rare. I agree with your initial premise though that most people don't need anything besides s30v but for me I'm sick of it.
