Most folks would assume a bunch of kids out in the middle of the night are up to no good. Way to show folks wrong, I grew up in small town NC. This is one of my favourite transit-related videos on UA-cam no cap. The despair induced by the barren wasteland that is Middle American urban planning is fully cured by the overwhelming wholesomeness of those kids who showed you around. Seriously, if I had to walk down a highway for five hours through the middle of bumfuck nowhere and at the end I was greeted by a bunch of enthusiastic teens that happy to see me I'd break down in tears and give them all a hug. I'm from New Zealand and I thought the urbanism of our provincial cities was bad but Jesus...
Thank you so much!!! A couple of the teens did ask for hugs and it was kinda nice after such a grueling walk... I've always wanted to go to New Zealand! One of my favorite bands is Split Enz, and I like the Oceania style of running decently frequent regional rail services.
Thank you! Yeah, I kept going back and forth on it...there was enough I DIDN'T like about the station (trains in the dead of night, questionable accessibility, distance from Dyersburg) that I felt I could give it a 6, but that building was REALLY nice...
Nashville native here, you're spot-on about how very NOT walkable our city is. There are good things to do outside of the downtown core, but you definitely need a car. Also it was awesome seeing you on MTA/WeGo/whatever they are calling themselves this week. I used to live in East Nashville and took the #4 bus downtown quite a bit.
Loved the parts where you showed what the traffic sign said, and the group of people you met at the train station. American small towns have great bones and we need the right people to revitalize bus and train service in this country. EDIT: Also, it's amazing to me that the train station is being used as a third place!
I live in Newbern so it was really cool to see you travelng from a bigger city! Newbern/Dyersburg isn't a place to visit there's literally nothing to do down here! I feel so bad you had to walk to Newbern it’s usually a 15 min drive from there. Nobody goes in that mall except to hang out in the parking lot. The AMC is really fun but it's hard to make money bc we're such a small town. Grecian is an amazing place to eat! Awesome! As a southern jersey guy and transit fanatic, you’ve given me some phenomenal places to check out! One of my favorite routes - Philly to Pittsburgh on the Pennsylvanian! (With an obligatory stop at Bonner’s Pub first!)
My dad used to do business trips out to Dyersburg, Tennessee, I didn't know much about it, especially that there was an Amtrak station nearby...ish, until this video! It seems like a nice little, midwestern-America town. You have a lot of dedication to venture out on all of those trains, buses, and long walks to get out there! Also, seeing WeGo's ex-Metra Gallery cars makes my heart sink a bit, because some of those cars (as well as an F59PH that's now with Metrolink in LA) were originally bought by the Michigan Department of Transportation and sent here to initiate a commuter service called MiTrain within the Detroit area. Said service unfortunately did not commence because they were not able to get the required funding, or something along those lines. That said, commuter rail is still apparently high-priority on the regional transit authority's list so... hope they make progressive steps soon! At least we have an above-average quality of Amtrak service (in my opinion) to Chicago but a second operator to serve the Detroit area would be great!
What a great video. I love your positive attitude for that long walk. Seeing those high schoolers greet you was just fantastic. Thanks for doing this trip!
The City of New Orleans IS obviously one of Amtrak's great routes. It's biggest problem is it servicing so many stops at night. PreAmtrak it ran as an all coach daytime run. I think there'd be a large ridership for a second daily train during daylight hours.
@@MilesinTransitHonestly it'd be nice, if there was some way to extend the Illini and Saluki trains from Carbondale to at least Memphis. Of course i think the local communities in KY and TN would have to help fund this train, since i doubt Kentucky and Tennesee state govenements would bother to help kick in any funding for an Illini/Saluki extension. I'm not sure how the timetable would work for such a new train. I know on at least one Chicago-St. Louis Lincoln Service train, it does fewer stops for the first southbound train to St. Louis each day(leaving something like near 7am).

Eh, close enough
The old heel-toe express.
As someone who used to live in Dyersburg and Newbern, I can confirm theyre both pretty quiet and comfortable towns
Awesome as always!
Thank you!
As a Tennesseean, the most surprising part of this video is that there is another station in Tennessee besides Memphis.
Fantastic stuff.
Thank you!
Rich farmland and awesome people.
Really hope you can do this for Indiana someday!
It's Connersville! I want to coordinate it with a day the Whitewater Valley Railroad is running...
Great! Thanks.

I’ve lived in Dyersburg my whole life and I feel like you missed sooo much crazies here😂
If you ever are back in dyrsburg you have to go to Abe’s steak house it’s so good.

If you make it out to Arizona's least-used station (Benson) before the year's over, hit me up & I'll see if any of our All Aboard AZ (statewide RPA affiliate) folks out there would be available to meet up. It's a flag stop so it doesn't always show up on the Amtrak timetable, but it gets decent ridership being the closest station to Sierra Vista & the army base there, plus a bunch of touristy stuff like Tombstone & Bisbee.
Shoot, I may not make it out there by the end of the year, but thank you for the offer - Benson looks like a neat one, and it has Greyhound service!
The grp of teens is rly fun
Greek steakhouses rarely disappoint. Des Moines used to have three in my adult lifetime. Now all are gone.
