- Exactly why was Kansas the best live band back in the 70's? You'll hear it in this clip...
Just when you thought you've heard it all, there comes along a pristine uncirculated soundboard from the early days. Sound and performance wise this live version of the song blows away the censored one from the first album reissue. This was recorded during the Masque tour when they opened for Aerosmith. I've tweaked the sound and added some live footage to bring back those days. Enjoy & happy 40th to the guys!
KANSAS broke musical boundaries. From Country and Folk to Rock and Metal to Progressive and Classical -- These boys did everything!

RIP, Robby...you won't be forgotten
1 of THE most underated bands in rock. in my opinion.
oh they knew of them, but the world is damn jealous, only thing that makes sense, pure jealousy
Top 5 easy! My favourite after Queen!
One of my faves, too!!!
Walsh on that Hammond organ brings a tear to my eye. The boys always gave you your money's worth every fucking night!
R.I.P. ROBBY! YOU WERE SUCH A BAD ASS!
This audio track more than amply demonstrates why Kansas has been my favorite band for 45 years. This is from one of the best Kansas bootlegs out there. Track it down, if you can.
Got it! I’m a huge collector of their music. If there is a bigger ‘Wheathead’ in the U.K. than me, I’d love to meet them!
I've been a huge fan of Kansas since I heard their first release in the 70s and still am. They more than any other band after 1970 had a way with their progessive sound that moved every bit of your soul . These guys deserve more respect than they get. They are right up there with other great bands such as the Beatles , Led Zeppelin and the Eagles as far as being music that trudged it's own path. I guess you could say I'm preaching to the quire but this music always had a way of centering me.
I was living in Chicago in 1975 - 1976 I saw Kansas do this song in 1976 I remember Robby's intro to this song He said "If any of you have been to Juarez, Mexico you know what I'm am talking about in this song and I can smell what you all are smoking out there, I am from Las Cruces. New Mexico which is about 40 miles from Juarez so it was cool to here him say that
In their prime, Kansas could rival anyone, from anywhere
Phil Ehart is one of the most underrated drummers in rock history. Every bit as good as Neil Peart. Every live recording I see of Kansas, he just blows me away with how great his skill is.
Phil is better than Ringo or Keith Moon. He's the best drummer I've ever seen.
I've seen many including Neil Peart and I think Phil is better overall.I finally saw him few years ago and he was still fantastic.
"Bringin' It Back" makes me wish Steve would bring back his Hammond C3 organ.
Steve was such an awesome organist & his Hammond C3 was such a big part of Kansas' overall sound on their first 5 albums including "Leftoverture", & "Point of Know Return". However, when "Monolith" came out, I was shocked to discover that Steve had traded his mighty Hammond C3 in for a thin-sounding Crumar organ and a 2nd Yamaha CP-70 piano. (Kerry also played one.), IMO, this forever changed Kansas' trademark sound.
Steve surely was an awesome organist!
So many people wrongly assume, or think, that Kerry Livgren played all that smokin’ Hammond in Kansas. Steve’s chops as an instrumentalist were overshadowed by his otherworldly voice. Rik Emmett of Triumph had a similar, but transposed conundrum: his incredible voice was overshadowed by his amazing guitar playing. They are two of the best singers and players in rock history!
Truly ahead of their time & many never realized it. Fantastic band from Topeka Midwest Kansas!
Super cool 😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊
Sometimes it all just comes together
Now that's rockin"! Superb band.
Glad we had this one....there will never be another Kansas!
I hope Phil keeps rocking those drums till he gets to heaven and then play some for Jesus ! He’s the best 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Bringing It Back is a great tune . Should be in their setlist for the 5oth anniversary tour. They can boogie like nobody's business.
I discovered Kansas in 1978 with their famous album Point Of Know Return and the 2 LP Live fabulous album Two For The Show. Kansas is one of my favorite progressive US group. Greats moments!!!
Man.
It's a shame Steve's piano and organ chops weren't more in the foreground during their career.
I totally agree! 👍 ☺
Not to mention Steve Walsh's prowess on the congas. In Steve's book "When They Call Your Name"-an incredible series of fan & music industry anecdotes & fantastic interviews with Steve & one-of-a-kind photos-I believe it was Phil Ehart who stated, in awe, that Steve could sit down & tinker with any instrument & master it!
@@bethleinicke9189 - Yup, I heard that, too. Jeff Glixman, a one-time member of a pre-fame version of the band, who became their live sound engineer and studio producer, said Steve was the best keyboard player he ever heard and also had the most immaculately perfect pitch of any singer he ever worked with. I still watch the Kirshner videos once in a while and just laugh at the otherworldly prowess of those six dudes from Topeka, especially Steve. I wish they featured his Hammond playing more on their records. It’s insane! As for his singing, Steve can hold his own against any vocalist of the rock era and his ability to hit you in the feels, as the kids say, puts him a notch or two above most.
Love this one Kansas is rocking.........
This is an absolute stellar performance…so glad it was captured. It happens to be my favorite of these two songs, so raw yet so professional. It is rare indeed to find a band with this much talent. The original 6 just really "jelled" so well together. Steve on the Hammond…amazing, Dave layin' down some serious foundation, and Robby just rippin' it on the violin. Geez, these guys really knew how to put on a musical show. Thanks for sharing this gem!
I have seen Kansas live 3 times , the best three shows witnessed live. One of My all time memories stamped into my mind for eternity,This is a spectacular audio portion, Thanks!
These guys introduced me to Prog in the early 70's. I have nothing but Love and respect for each member of Kansas. Your music still lives with me at almost 60 years old and into the future we go!
😔🙏❤🔥🎸🎼🎵🎶🌹🇺🇸
pure magic in every note- an inspiration that keeps on inspiring.
Wow GREAT JOB on the visuals! Must have been a labor of LOVE... And great audio too lets not forget the point of the video! Thanks---
very, very tremendous versions of these tracks. so this band many times in the 70's !
THANK YOU, kerrylives!! Your video skills are in the park of Kansas music skills, and while a tad shocked I'm just now seeing this, I am FRESHLY inspired by it all!!! MASQUE changed my life, and Blessings to you for the hard work!!
you can feel the energy!
Amazing.......Kansas ❤!!!!
Can I just say #WoW !!! This was so much fun to watch... I loved seeing Steve at this age! Thanks for this one!!
Most likely Jeff Glixman (future producer & former band member) was doing their hair xcellent live mix for this show. Before Kansas got pigeonholed as just a Prog-Rock Christian band this O-6 lineup was a kick ass rock 'n roll band playing some unique original music and this little medley off their debut album proves it. I like hearing Robby singing and harmonizing with Walsh and Dave Hope's bass playing sounds like a third lead guitar.
I am new to the party. Thanks for this. It was amazing!!!
You just gotta love em !!! 💕🎶🎶🎶🎶💕💕😁
Nice job! Great live early track with visuals that fit.
Hello, again. A very Happy and Healthy New Year to you and yours! A lot has changed this year, and this has become exponentially more sweet and rich with the shots of Robby. God bless you guys, your families, your legacy, AND the Master Plan for the soon Return!!
Bringing it back y Can I Tell You grandes canciones de KANSAS
Brilliant, brilliant editing from the Kirshner gigs. So well done, must have taken ages. A real labour of love. Thank you!! luv from London
😊how can we get this incredible band the the glass of fame !!!!!!!!!!❤
Amazing job as always! One more performance preserved for all time......THANKS!
Len
One of the most underrated bassists
Tremendous performance! Thank you for sharing =)
WOW!!!
I love these live videos !!!!! The guys are phenomenal!!!!!!!
great band
magnífico
Awesome video and by far the best version of these songs I've heard! Thanks again!
Amazing! Stunning gig!
I'll certainly be on the lookout for this bootleg!
Whoever stuck those video clips in there, did it very well. The videos are from different live performances, but you almost can’t tell. Great job!
We who smoke appreciate this. We who smoke, have always smoked, and will continue to smoke, regardless of what the donkeys and the elephants say or do. We appreciate this. Remember, It's always 4:20 somewhere...
And Mexican weed back then was great. Not so damn strong like today. Used to laugh my ass off after smoking it back then.
Excellent video, some very hard and tedious work went into the editing you did.
I know that “sometimes it just comes together” but you did a fine job of lining it all up.
CrazyBear65 happy 4/21
I bet JJ CALE loved this version of his cool song. I do.
The whole world is smokin'!!!!!!👼😇
Восхитительно! Спасибо автору ролика, создал замечательный калейдоскоп. Канзас1974-1977 самая лучшая и любимая музыка.
RIP Robby
Heavy Metal Prog Bluegrass Kansas right Hy'ere.
WOW! Thanks for the post
j.j. cale!!!
Great J J Cale song.
Fuck yeah!!!
Kansas in Rock n Roll Hall of Fame ever????
Damm sure should be
R.R.H.O.F..... Kansas is above that nest of politico-musico self indulgence critics..but,that's imho.
Never will. Don’t know what to pigeon hole as. Extraordinary collection of world class musicians doing their thing their way. To produce five worldies from one tiny little town in the US mid-west is remarkable! (I know Robby was born in Illinois, but he grew up in Kansas!)
Not just your opinion, bud! I’m with you 100%!!!
Screw the RRHOF… tasteless bastards
It's like they doctored together a video from fits and pieces of footage
Fastards!!!
Is there more video from this show?
Missing Robby. ☹️
Now I know why Steven Tyler attempted to "pull the plug" on Kansas during their tour together... :^)
I was hoping for a video clip of him trying!! 😂
All thanks for the live video. Absolutely disliked the editing. This is so tight and good I would have liked to see the musicians all the time.
Maybe you don’t realize that the poster of this video combined audio from one show and video from another. He did a remarkably amazing job! There isn’t much audio or video of Kansas from that far back, so we should all be thankful for this and for kerrylives’ efforts!
What Portland venue?
The Memorial Coliseum. Tickets were 5 bucks each. Ted Nugent opened, then Kansas played. Aerosmith closed the show. I was about 10 feet from the stage, festival seating ruled the day back then. Kansas was amazing that night, no doubt about it.
This is an awesome song! Dont know why it didn't get as much air play as the others...
