Kansas - Portrait (He Knew) (live in Omaha, NE, 1982-07-30, remaster)

- For those who asked for more after my previous offering from this show. As with "Crossfire" I cleaned up the image and replaced the sound with a pre-FM source. John screws up about 2 mins into this song about Albert Einstein, but man what a killer version of Portrait this is! Kansas is one of those few bands that actually sound better live than in the studio and here's the proof. With album sales reaching over 40 million I'd say it's time Kansas gets inducted into the R&RHoF asap.
The band:
Kerry Livgren
John Elefante
Robby Steinhardt
Phil Ehart
Rich Williams
Dave Hope
Guest musician on this tour:
Warren Ham
I can’t think of a more underrated drummer than Phil Ehart.
You are over rated as a youtuber
RIP Robby Steinhardt violinist and co-lead vocalis
Yes, this is the first song I thought of when I heard about his passing. RIP
@@beachrunner6889 oh 😲 what happened to him😭
@@lindabergman3127 he was rushed to Tampa General Hospital, where I was saved with a liver transplant, he had organ failure and pancreatic cancer!😭💚✌💚
Kerry Livgren is a stellar musician and a gracious gift from God to the world of progressive rock. ROCK ON KERRY!
RIP Robby Steinhardrt, and the best Violinist in Rock!!
🙏☮️✌️☹️🇺🇲💜♎♾️
without a doubt,incredible vocalist too,RIP ROBBY
GOODBYE ROBBY, R.I.P. THANX FOR THE MUSIC
Elefante could hit the notes and carry the tune, but there has always been some indescribable soul missing without Steve Walsh. Still love it and love them to this day.
Steve Walsh had a richness and silky smooth character to his voice that is missing, IMO.
Walsh had the way better voice. His stage acting was as bad as the Elefant-Mens.
No offence to Elefante, but I agree. Steve was the Lead singer, awesome Vocalists and Performer.
The Soul that pulls & pushes this band ~ without any doubt is Steve Walsh! I’m 60 & though high school, this was #1 for me [esp., “People of the South Wind”]..!!!🇺🇸

My 2 favorite Kansas songs that deserve more recognition-
Hymn to the Atman and On the other Side - both masterpieces
Concerts are so different now. You see the joy on the faces of the kids down front. Bands weren't overexposed like they are now. It was more of an event back then. Special.
Just being able to watch a concert for free on UA-cam is enough to make it not as special going to one. It was either go to a show or buy the tape/DVD if you wanted to see your bands live!
@@GeddyRC I remember the day when there were no VHS tape/Laser Disc/DVD. The only thing you had was American Bandstand or Don Kirshner's Rock Concert (unless you lived in Europe where you had The Old Grey Whistle Test or Musicladen).
I'm 57 and finally some of the incredible bands of progressive/classic rock era of my youth are being recognized by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (Yes, Genesis, Steve Miller, Rush to name a few), but there are 3 others that boggle my mind as to why they are not there yet. ELP, Styx, and this legendary, still going strong, perhaps the most versatile of all, KANSAS!!!
Have you forgotten another? Who was the greatest rock performer of all time...IAN ANDERSON of Jethro Tull
And until they recognize these bands, the RRHOF will largely be considered a huge joke by the real fans who lived during that era. I personally will not visit the place until all of those bands are in, because without them, it is not a true HOF.
ELO
@@michaelprosperity3420 Electric Light Orchestra was inducted into RRHOF in 2017. The Beatles were often asked whom they may have sounded like had they played into the 70's and 80's. The answer was always ELO. Fittingly, ELO was inducted by George's son, Dhani.
Might I add Peter Frampton
They are in my top five bands of all times never get tired of them.
Rest in Peace our Blessed Robbie. We all were fully amazed with Kansas and you leadership on stage was and always will be unmatched.
January, 2020, and I STILL keep coming back to this... I so miss this music.
Oh God, oh God, this guys are from another planet! Im going to sound like a very old man (which Im not) but how come has music industry turned so bad? not all but Kanye West, Bieber, etc etc.... where are talents like this??
man i'm tired of hearing about KANSAS being underrated, hell they were 20 years ahead of their time in 1974, they are master musicians, and know very well for those who love to rock hard, without all the excess noise,in the 10 top bands in the world,Rich Williams is a real guitar player
Kerry absolutely plays a supurb guitar !!!!!
Kansas is in a class of their own. Too talented, amazing, unique, and chill-provoking to be part of any common rock hall of fame.
Yup, H.O.F's a joke with a bad punchline. So many deserving bands that get overlooked because the wernt "mainstream", who are these people?
this just absolutely kicks butt.... the energy level coming off stage is amazing...
Don't know why they haven't been inducted into the R&R HoF, but it should have happened years ago. The influence of their music will be with me my whole life. What an amazing band they are!
Because Hall of Fame is a crap organization
Awesome sound. Thanks for sharing this. Kansas created a lot of great music but this song is my favorite.

Saw Kansas open for Queen 1976 Madison Wi. Song for America just came out. Talk about a hard act to follow! ( glad I got to see Freddie thats for sure )
Great song and I love John Elefante's voice. He's still at it doing solo stuff and with his band Mastedon. He, with his brother Dino, have a great career producing many bands [including Petra] and solo acts through the years. He took the job in Kansas because he loved the creativity of the band and Kerry Livgren's songwriting.
Love love love this song that never received much airplay!
By far my favorite Kansas song. Its a masterpiece and John does a great job with it. He was a fantastic replacement for Walsh and not many big bands can follow up a lost front man so perfectly as Kansas did here and did again just recently with the addition of Ronnie Platt.
Absolutely! Kansas has a knack of finding incredibly gifted musicians to replace members over the years. LOVE Robbie, but Ragsdale sure ain't no slouch either!

Mastery of every instrument, including those which don't often make it into rock, but they sounded great in the hands of Kansas!
They're really enjoying the music. I wish I could go back in time and watch them live
you just have to watch and listen to their videos on you tube with a good laptop and good headphones -
and you are there courtesy of the modern digital age of Wi-Fi Hi-Fi and Hi-definition !!!
It hurt me when I found out Robbie passed, some people hurt, damn, may our friend R.I. P
Loved this band, I saw them several times.
me too - the world would be a far far not better place without them
RIP Robby Steinhardt….
Kudos to the current Kansas lineup (2022) for keeping this music alive.
grew up listening to them such talented band! with amazing sounds
Seen them the next night on my 18th birthday in Wichita KANSAS baby!!
Love these guys...I thank them for my musical mentality, even till this day from as far back as 38 yrs ago
i'm 66 i went to 3 of their concerts. loved them all.......
RIP, Robbie.
I saw Kansas on the Vinyl Confessions tour with a couple of my friends in 82. Great concert and the Artimus Pyle band opened for them. Portrait He Knew is one of their best tunes.
@Blake T Awesome. I wish It was old enough to see the Point of know Return tour. Well Two For The Show.
i saw them perform live a couple times myself
82 was a good year for Kansas and me too- i got married that year!
Well, this IS my favorite Kansas Song, was lucky enough to hear this twice in concert. We used to call this and other similar songs, NOT songs, but chronicles. Rock out !!!!

Long live Steve Walsh.
AMEN!!!
That's not Steve, that's John Elephante.
BluesLicks101 John E does it justice though.
Disrespectful for someone who had to replace a GIANT and did pretty well in the circumstance!!!!
@@BluesLicks101 Exactly.
Saw them in 77, 79 and 81. Loved the naked guy that came out on stage during the instrumentals. Too bad I was too far away to really see him
Some band members can't be replaced
Divine talent. Awesome.
I miss Kansas... and all the 70's talent... They were on the radio back then... as well as so many other talented groups. Now, radio just sucks.
truly awesome!! I would listen as a teen over and over.....there's great knowledge here.....
Well I'm a big fan of Steve Walsh, and obviously he is the true voice of Kansas but I always thought John Elefante was a great fit and he did a great job singing those songs. And he still sounds great even today, which unfortunately cannot be said of Steve...
Elefant Man was nothing but a pretty boy. Ridicoulous at its best
I saw Kansas in Fargo, ND almost 30 years ago. They were amazing.
RIP Robby! :(
one of the best live reproductions EVER.
Covered this song back in the 70's, and it was a mother to sing and play. Kansas was an incredibly talented group of musicians, vocalists and writers. Love em.
Excellent version.
Mr. Robby Steinhardt Rest In Peace 🎻🎵🎼🎶😭😔🙏
Kansas jams like portrait..helped point me in the right direction...
Kansas underrated
These 🐈🐈🐈 were pretty damn good back in their day.
"HE HAD A DIFFERENT IDEA, A GLIMPSE OF THE MASTER PLAN !"

I Love Kanas!!!! Saw them in the 70's
First time I've seen Johnny belt from the stage live. 😎
The start to this concert was unlike anything I had seen before.. 3 orchestra musicians sitting and a conductor at a podium .. conductor taps his baton on the podium, then puts it in the air, and explosion came from the large French Horn.. a white out explosion and the start of the song Fire begins.. WOW
I saw that tour also😊
I agree on them being one of the Top 5 Bands
Keep rocking those drums Phil Ehart!
I agree that Steve Walsh is the true voice of Kansas. One of the underrated groups of the 70's. They had quite a few great tunes which makes them more than the one hit wonders.

I saw this tour. So love Kansas!!
So them on Auduo Vision tours. Phenomenal performance. Steve Walsh hand stands oof the organ, damn. Steinhardt was an absolute showman. One of the best concerts.
Love the Kansas roll. TIGHT
Saw these guys a couple of times in the 90s there are great Kerry livgreen a true genuis
Sounds almost like the record. One of my favorites on the album
Great version of Kansas---yes loved John in the band and Phil was killing it....RIP Robbie)
Wow. That sounded tight.
I don't follow Kansas too much, but I do like some of their songs.....this being one of them. This is as clean as the studio version.
Nicely done.
I enjoyed the flute at the beginning.
I sometimes think a wind player would have been a nice addition to the band, sometimes.
They are one of the best bands, anywhere, anytime. They are the American prog rock band.
yeah............this is kickass
I only saw these guys once and that unfortunately was not with Kerry livgren but they put on one hell of a show I saw them in El Paso Phil an awesome drummer

@@richardwalker9826 Yeah, I saw them in L.A. for "Point Of No Return". It was New Years Eve, what a show! R.I.P. Robbie
The singer is John Elephante. Steve Walsh decided to go solo, and John took his place. They are both excellent singers in their own way; see my other post.
I prefer Steve!🙄😢
Steve was disappointed that he would have to sing some of Kerry's more Christian-inflected words, so he left and subsequently formed the band Streets. Eventually, violinist/singer Robby Steinhardt felt the same way and quit after the _Vinyl Confessions_ tour ended in the fall of 1982.
@@ClassicTVMan1981X dumb move
I have contemplated this song many times, I wondered if the words alluded to a personal spiritual sojourn
Dedicate to Einstein genius
It was originally written by Kerry Livgren about Albert Einstein. Later after his experience of becoming a born again Christian he adjusted some of the lyrics to reflect upon Jesus’s life on earth.
this is absolutely magnificent
Awesome live version.
Forgot the prodigious Warren Ham was touring with them post AD, good stuff.
Love the guy jumping during the beginning
Great tune! Awesome band! I saw Kansas open for Queen in ‘75 when I was 8 yrs old
this sounded so good!!! and i haven't heard this band, or any band, sound this tight! its also amazing on how well John can sing Walsh's songs (meaning the songs Walsh sang, considering the songs were majority Livgren compositions).
Was looking for a good version of this song live, but this has Elefante. He'
s a good singer, just not mine.
and the worse thing about Elefante, He's now a Trump-loving fool who is touring with the Jay Sekulow band--Trump's lying lawyer..
