'What's the big crime?': Bill Maher defends Harrison Butker's 'homemaker' speech

- Comedian Bill Maher has defended Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker against backlash over his graduation speech at Benedictine College.
The Kansas City Chiefs kicker recently came under fire over his comments directed at women during his commencement speech.
The NFL player has been labelled a misogynist and having a 1950s mentality following his viral speech.
The League has since publicly distanced itself from his comments.
During a panel discussion on Friday, the 'Real Time' host said he doesn’t understand "what the big crime is".
"I don't agree with much with this guy, but I don't get the thing, Maher said.
"He said… ‘Some of you may go on to lead successful careers in the world.' Ok, that seems fairly, like, modern."
"‘But I would venture to guess that the majority of you are most excited about your marriage and the children you will bring into this world.’ I don't see what the big crime is. I really don't."
Maher questioned why this view is seen as problematic, noting that many Americans share it.
"And I think this is part of the problem people have with the left is that lots of people in this country are like this," he said.
"Like he's saying some of you may go on to lead successful careers, but a lot of you are excited about this other way that people- everybody used to be. And now can't that be a choice too?"
I'm a highly educated and successful career woman. My multiple university degrees and professional accolades are in a box in a closet. Photos of my husband, children, and our family are displayed throughout my home.

And that is your choice! And that has nothing to do with what he said. He implied that women receiving degrees were being lied to.

Are you aware that females make up more than half of the work populace and if we were to send them all home we would economically crash because we make up more than half of the actual population and there aren't enough men to run the economy in the United States.

Are you also aware that a portion of that male population is either too old to bear children in a nursing home or in a prison... making our Homemaker provider husband selection even smaller?! You can support and agree with the man all you want but realize that maybe you should educate yourself before you make a total ass of yourself like the Chiefs Butler dude did when he actually gave this speech.

I am so eternally grateful that my wife put her career on hold to stay home with our kids. Its no guarantee but they are in their 20s, both are entirely successful and on their own, no drug problems, no anti depression drugs and no crime. My wife went back to her career when my youngest was 16 and is every bit as successful as she would have been if she never quit. Married 30 years and grateful. I tell her often how much I honor her choice

Married 30 years means you got married in 1994 and were probably born in early 70’s. Growing up she would have been surrounded by women who were expected to give up there jobs when they had children. In the nineties there were very few, if none at all, female top executives and women’s pay was way below men. Also a couple could afford to live on one salary. Societal pressure was probably the big factor why your wife stayed at home rather than continue her job. Nowadays it is almost impossible for a couple to raise a child on one salary. You need two salaries to afford childcare et al. To be able to do it comfortably you both need two good paying jobs with high salaries. Before you criticise me I am 63 and have therefore seen things go from bad to worse for couples with children. There are no stay at home moms these days unless the husband is in a very wealthy job.

My grandchildren are on the way in the coming months and I am fortunate enough to give the kids an option if the ladies want to return to work. My wife and I will help care for them as needed to make sure that their mothers are either with them or letting us take care of them. It is too important to have family there for their growth. We might even homeschool with minimal exposure to indoctrination
My parents looked after my kids before and after school. It was wonderful. They had a bit of group daycare/preschool and that was great for socializing and being well rounded kids. I took time off work when they were little. They were very happy.

I must be old; I can remember when Feminism was about women wanting to have it all -- rewarding career AND home and family, just as men have. So what's the problem now?
The problem is that he framed homemaking as the true purpose of women and said that we only “come alive” when we become mothers/wives. Which is straight out of the 1950’s. And why would this be addressed to just the women? Why wouldn’t the men also be most excited about the children they will bring into the world?

I also listened to the parts where he said the gay kids in the audience were committing a “deadly sin”. Which is something I’m sure they were hoping to hear at their graduation with their families present.
It’s true about asking you what do you do? I was home with my kids. Well what about before and after. I didn’t have a career. I had part time jobs her and there over the years. I went to college. I worked after college. But what I wanted was to be married and have children. I was in high school and college in the 70s. I’m Catholic. I wish we had a speaker like him when I graduated.

My mom was raised during the depression. Women were raised to be wives and mothers. It benefitted me and other kids to have an awesome mom at home. I also had a dad who loved and supported my mom. It was idyllic to be me in the 1960s
Same here, my mom was married and pregnant with me at 20, my siblings before she was 25 and she was there until our teens when she went to work and became a very successful career woman and mother. It meant EVERYTHING and my wife did the same for our kids that are grown and successful in life today
The stay at home mom stint ends when the kids leave home..or even earlier when they start going to school, hang out with friends, etc.. My friend tried being a stay at home mom for a few years and didn't like only being "the mother of". She then started working again when the kids are at school and she really enjoys it. Plus, it gives her independence from her husband's salary and together they have more money for their family.

She stated work when she was between 35-40 which meant she didn’t have much chance to advance up the career ladder and with commensurate wages. My wife just wanted to be a homemaker and I gave her that. She raised two beautiful and successful daughters, took care of me so I can focus on my job as a U.S. Army soldier and provide for my family. We are now empty nesters and enjoying the fruits of our conservative and Christian values that we followed.

We stuck with our Christian values and just tried to always do the right thing which most of the time is the hardest thing to do. Our luxurious life doesn’t mean we are rich. We just live comfortably, no debts, good health, happy and loving every minute of each other’s company. We have two wonderful daughters, the eldest is a journalism graduate and married to an Air Force pilot and soon to have a baby. The youngest is a clinical psychologist and works as counselor in an Air Force base in Florida. What more can I ask. i have fulfilled my role as a husband and father and soon to be grand father in this life and so is my wife, a homemaker.
I watched the full speech and I didn't interpret it the way the media is making it out to be. I'm not even catholic or affiliated with any religion for that matter. Butker wasn't forcing women to become homemakers, he said some women will climb the corporate ladder, but he bets the majority of them are excited to become wives and mothers and talked about his wife's experience. It's great to see how much he appreciates his wife unlike some NFL players who are wife beaters. He makes millions a year so his wife doesn't have to work. Don't tons of women dream of being an NFL wife anyway? I forgot to add you can be a mother and still work a job. Lots of people do that this day in age. Oh, and wasn't he delivering a commencement speech at a catholic university where the values are more aligned with his? I might not agree with everything he says, but I'm not at all offended over this.

I’m a man who works 2 jobs and I’m more excited about the kids I bring into this world and the person lm building my life with than my career and I love I do - my work is to make sure my family has what they need and that’s more important, their happiness and quality to life. My purpose is bigger than me when it comes to my family.

Of course it's a choice but the way it was framed was if you don't prioritize starting a family you'll probably not be as happy as you could've been.
Like the implication is that's the correct path when in reality there isn't a "correct" path. Just do what you want and acknowledge people can find happiness in either.
He's doing the exact opposite (implies motherhood makes you happier) of what he's correctly criticizing (women being told career chasing makes you happier).
Neither makes you happier. Doing what you want/pursuing what you want makes you happy.
This was an over correction which is common nowadays. In the attempt to call out silliness people tend to swing back to far to the opposite side.

Graduation Is the best time to tell women that they are values regardless of what they choose to do in life and moreover, that homemaker is definitely a an honorable and valid choice to have.
Not everyone goes to University to get a career. In fact, most universities do not prepare you for a career. Going to University is much like seeing the world before you settle down. For me, it was a place to go until I found my vocation. These days, as complicated as the world has become, a woman would do well to go to university in preparation for motherhood. That is, if the universities would teach parenting to men and women. There is something terribly wrong in a world where getting an education does not include parenting.
It's not a crime to speak your opinion. Just as I feel that Harrison is a moron. Just let people live how they want to live. How hard is that?

I think it comes down to the devaluation of the traditional family unit. No one is advocating for barefoot illiterate pregnant teenage mothers in the kitchen, or opposing women doing what they want to do. It's the idea that the biggest source of pride in your day to day life should be your job, your level of professional achievement. While those are indeed healthy points of pride in ones self and contributes to a persons overall social and mental health as well as their income, how could having built a happy, healthy, and loving family that you get to enjoy everyday possibly be thought of as a lesser acomplishment than a professional achievment?
Being a dedicated homemaker is not only hard work, but it's also the most important position in the world for each and every family. The idea that young women have been liberated from a position of domestic servitude (which is actual a position of near ultimate power and authority in a home) to only go on to work in an office is a laughable. Given the opportunity I would love to stay at home and invest my time and effort into my family. It would be a much more rewarding than devoting my precious little time on Earth for the benefit of my boss.
I certainly don't feel free, I feel trapped by my career, there's other things I'd rather be doing. But this is only my point of view, if a young woman wants to pursue attainment in the professional world, then why does it seem like the arguement is presented as it has to be one or the other, why can't she have both? Why can't she have a job and start a family, either before, after, or even at the same time? Yes, one would suffer because of the other, but that's life, which is dealing with reality on reality's terms. That's why I continue working, but I always keep thing in perspective, at the end of the day it's just a job, but my family will always be home when I get there, and they are the reason I do what I do. They are the most important thing to me, and I don't see any reason why being a homemaker would be seen as a lesser accomplishment.

He can have any ideals he wants - but to be fair, this was a commencement speech, not a speech to the general community. You are supposed to celebrate the achievement of gaining a degree, not telling people that they have fallen for a lie and wasted the last three or four years of their lives.

You're basing your entire opinion on less than 2 minutes of a 20-minute speech. He spent a lot of time talking about how men need to be men and how faith should drive what you do.
And he didn't say they wasted the last four years of their lives. He just said that there is more to life than just working for a company, and that's getting married and having kids. He never said women shouldn't work. He said homemaker is one of the greatest jobs but that doesn't mean he felt all women should only do that. The last 20+ years western society has made stay at home wives seem as if they were less. There is nothing wrong with being a stay-at-home mother.
More and more women are coming out saying they chased the corporate ladder, forsaken marriage and kids and now that they are in their 50's, they regret it because they have no one to share their golden years with. They don't have kids or future grandkids to share their successes with.

There is a huge difference between speaking at a Catholic university on his own time vs kneeling for the national anthem when you are supposed to be standing. I can do whatever I want on my own time, I cannot express my political views at work. That's the difference.

If I had been in that audience I would have nodded my head in complete agreement. I am a college graduate, yet the corporate ladder has never been of interest to me and most of the college educated women I know. I wanted marriage and children far more and for far longer than any career thoughts.

To my knowledge, Butker has NOT been charged with ANY crimes. He's been exposed as a 16th century misogynist who hates diversity, equity and inclusion as much as he hates the LGBTQIA+ community, but that's not the same thing as being criminally charged.
The only words worth a fig in the Bible: Matthew 7:12: "In everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets"

The “big crime” is he’s not prepared to give up his career and raise his kids, but expect women to give up their careers and be “homemakers “. It’s the hypocrisy. If he gave up his own career to raise kids, then I’ll think that he actually believes what he says. Expect he hasn’t.
That’s what feminism was supposed to offer. Choices! Not take away any. Instead, when people asked women what they did, if she said homemaker, she was given the side eye. I’ve always hated that. I’m 70 and had a great career. I did not have a wonderful marriage waiting for me upon graduation. I needed to work and was glad, slowly, there were more opportunities than previously offered…teacher, nurse or secretary. Nothing wrong with those professions but more doors needed to be open for women to pursue their futures. The bottom line is, live your life like you (or you and your husband) want to or need to. You only have one. Choose wisely and don’t disparage anyone else’s choices. Btw..I got married and had a daughter. It was later than my friends but it was wonderful and worked out perfectly for us. God has a purpose and a plan for us, to prosper us and not harm us. Let’s keep hands off and let others be free.

I agreed with most of what he said I also understand the outrage though. My mom is a stay at home mom and homeschooled my brother and I and I wish that more women and men understood the value they bring in relationships but sadly not many realize it. In my opinion it is weird how in the United States we almost talk down about and undermine women’s education yet the countries he most likely were referring to with low child out of wedlock rates value education for both genders. So to make a speech like this to women who’s parents or they have just spent a lot of money is kind of unnecessary, insensitive and undermining. Plus in America all of these teachers and parents are saying the children can’t read nor do math and are more behind than ever. Well in many conservative cultures they value education and having an education is basic in their countries. They understand that the mother is going to be your child’s first teacher when she becomes a housewife and whatever traits women have acquired to be successful in our lives and in pursuing our education will be passed down to our children because we all first pair bond with our mothers and pick up little tiny habits from them that make substantial impact in our lives. I also heard an elderly Japanese man say while being interviewed in Japan about the birth and marriage rates that he made sure to say get married to a woman who has an education because your children will be smart too. My parents also said this to me growing up about making sure I have my own credits and education. I’ve also heard this from Arabs, Koreans, Pakistanis, Indians, Chinese, Singaporeans but in America young men and some women are always talking about women being educated is part of the problem when in South Korea planes ✈️ are down so that their sons AND DAUGHTERS pass their exams so that they can get into one of the top universities. They also go through great lengths to help their young people when it comes to their education. Even in the Jewish community women are educated. So you can see how it feels daunting when we see all of these articles on how poorly school children are doing in the states but then we turn around and discourage women from getting a degree only to look to more traditional and conservative cultures and try to strive to emulate what they have going on without actually knowing what they have going on. That’s why in many countries there is no such thing as a gap year or men aren’t staying in college. I’m not at all saying it’s 100% women’s responsibility though I will say some cultures that we so conveniently bring up to prove our point’s understand that the mother is the first teacher so women need an education and life experiences too.

I have been seeing all this controversy surrounding this speech and as a person who never adheres to black and white thinking and always tries to see the shades of grey in between, my head was trying to justify both the supporters and opponents of this speech and u could not have said it any better
I belong to a conservative community from Pakistan where people have a lot of money so they send their daughters to expensive universities only for them to immediately settle down after graduating and their degrees are meant to be trophies to attract potential suitors. This was what was expected from me too after graduation but I wanted to put my education to good use not to be some sort of trophy so I worked for 5 years despite several challenges and I am proud of my accomplishments
I have recently gotten married to a man from my community and am now settled in Canada. Now as a stay at home I often wonder if all those years of hard work despite coming from a privileged background worth it but I am fortunate to have a husband who is proud of my accomplishments and reminds me that children need educated mothers in this society and women who have exposure can better guide their children. There are days when it feels extremely confusing to be a woman in this modern world and I am consistently asking myself if I am going against religious values by working but I also think it’s not right for a woman to settle down immediately after graduation especially when your parents have invested so much into your education. It is important to gain life experiences and discipline that only professional life can teach u which will help women in becoming better parents in future
@@nimranaeem7855 thank you, I also heard this from another Pakistani woman as well that how in Pakistan having a degree is just normal and being educated is very important and even with that still they are traditional in marriage with one of the lowest child out of wedlock rates. Women getting professional experiences is important as well as life experiences that one’s career and friends might bring you. Having more life experiences will help you make an informed decision when getting married as well as making other decisions and as women we have more to protect in my opinion we need to be smarter and even more wise and intelligent. My mother as a SAHM went to secretarial school and worked in finance as well as in management and when I began working she gave me all the pointers and the hard truths too to help me. It was a blessing because she helped me with my resume making it look professional and she would proof read my dad’s letters or emails for his work too. College is not just for getting a job it refines and polishes you.
I'm a little confused where people are getting the idea that stay at home moms are looked down upon though? Idk, maybe I'm just fortunate enough to have been raised around people who arent judgemental but I haven't been around people who look down upon that. I do think there's a misconception that being a SAHM is less difficult than having a career which I think is untrue. I think you CAN kinda do both, but it's gonna come with a lot of stress. I think current wave feminism though realizes the fact that now that women are more integrated into workplaces, there should be more support for mothers. I dont think modern feminism says "you can do both." it recognizes that it's hard to do both and pushes for more societal/workplace support for working moms (/working parents in general. I also think the idea that a mom should be the one to stay home with the kids is flawed/false. I know traditional catholics believe that cause they believe that's what God wants which is fine if that's how they want to structure their family- but I'm talking about from a secular framework from a child welfare perspective, I don't think it matters which parent does most of the child rearing stuff)

People can give a good message but certain words or phrase may throw that "good message" to the trash can.
That's the thing, it was a diabolical lie. It started following WWII when the government saw the potential tax revenue women could bring to the country. The government started raising the cost of goods to lower buying power so two incomes was equivalent to that of one income in a span of 20 years.
The other part of the lie is that women will be satisfied with career success in lieu of having children. Men take pride in their work and accomplishments; women take pride in their home and family. That's not all men and all women but it is a large enough portion to make the generalization. It's why certain fields are dominated by men and others are dominated by women. Because we are different. And to sell the lie that men and women are the same is wrong.
And the reason this lie is so diabolical is because by the time women realize they were sold a fake bag of goods, it's too late for them to go back on get the things they missed out on, primarily children.

This was a graduation ceremony, though. They celebrated an academic achievement, not what could have been by now or already is.
Whatever women chose to do these days is a decision they have to make alone or with their partner. Harrison made that decision with his wife, which is beautiful, but it has nothing to do with the graduation of random strangers. He should have just congratulated them to their achievement, wish them well for their future and be done with it.
If one is a like-minded practicing Catholic -- and I believe many in that Catholic College are -- then, it has a lot to do with the graduation of "random strangers."
@@sadie4538 I am a Catholic, now married and with children. But when I graduated and then got my PhD, which I wanted to do, I hadn’t met the right guy yet. However, I had my parents in the audience who supported me to pursue my academic dreams and were super proud. Them and I would have found it incredibly patronizing to hear about marriage and children when this was not the time and the place. I met my husband, also a Catholic, years later and he has been and still is supporting my career while I am supporting him. For us this works well.

I raised my standards in females. Locally i am expected to be with what use to be Chavs or to accept a really chavvy female.

Having a family is great. If she gets to stay at home and become a homemaker, great! But remember this speech was made on their graduation. And telling the girls that their life starts when you marry a man is incredibly self centred thing to do. The occasion does not call for this man to devalue all their hardwork the women spent in an effort for that degree! This speech is for the general audiences, not for freshly graduated young females.
I disagree 100%. I wish someone had told me the importance of being a mom & wife and how vain and fleeing is to seek a career if you want a family. My grandmother got her teaching certificate when her husband was killed. Raised four great children, and continued University courses into her 60's. She imparted the value of education as a beloved teacher. She was forced to step up, but loved her family and the hundreds of students whose lives she touched. She was the most selfless and loving person. She left a huge legacy.

We raised our children on one income. If a couple really wants to do it they can. You don’t have to have a lot of money. My husband had a very low income at the beginning and we did just fine.

To me, the lie is that women will be happy without a husband and kids. Society has spent more than 20 years convincing women that job success is more important than a family. And the reality is that is not true. Women, in general, take more pride in having kids than any success they've had moving up the corporate ladder. Look how many successful women have come out and said that they take more pride in their children than all the success they've had in their job.
The lie is telling girls from a young age that when they become women, they shouldn't have a family, they shouldn't get married. They should only pursue monetary aspirations. So of course, being raised on that philosophy, they think their dreams should be just that. The reality is it is not as fulfilling in the long term. It's not the key for lifelong happiness. Marriage and children, in general, is what makes women happy. And that's not me saying that is all women are good for. They should, if they desire, have a career and pursue financial success, but not at the cost of their family.
