  • Sky News Contributor Evelyn Rae has called out criticism over NFL player Harrison Butker's graduation speech at Benedictine College.
    The Kansas City Chiefs kicker recently came under fire over his comments directed to women during his commencement speech.
    The NFL player has been labelled a misogynist and having a 1950s mentality following his viral speech, the NFL has since publicly distanced itself from his comments.
    "I don’t think anything was wrong with what he said, and the problem is it's being incredibly dishonest what people have been doing it was a 20-something-minute speech," Ms Rae said.
    "But most people who are speaking about it have taken those little grabs totally out of context and have ran with it and being like well he's a misogynist.
    "They don’t take note that for 10 minutes of his speech, he talks about how men need to be better men, they need to be better fathers.
    "So this whole thing that he is this misogynist twat who’s this and that is just dishonest at best."

    A Catholic giving a speech at a Catholic school speaking exactly what the entire class feels and follows in their faith. He got a standing ovation from the class and audience so the speech was felt by everyone he spoke to at that event. That was not a speech meant for everyone just focused on the graduates anyone truggered is just triggered because it goes against the narrative.

    The other important thing to note in his speech was that he not only referred to his wife’s vocation as a wife and mother but also his own vocation being just as important to him as a husband and father!! No misogyny at all!! The world needs more men like this!

    • @wolfofthewest8019
      @wolfofthewest8019 Місяць тому

      Another important thing to note is that *vocation* has a special meaning in Catholicism (the term was invented by Catholics). It does not mean the same thing as "career." In Catholicism, there are only three vocations: the married life, the consecrated life, and the priesthood. Women cannot join the priesthood, they can only pursue the married life (wife and mother) or the consecrated life (nun). Man can join the priesthood, pursue the married life (husband and father), or the consecrated life (monk).
      A lot of people don't understand this original use of vocation and so they think that "women pursing their vocation as wives and mothers" means the same thing as "women pursuing their career as wives and mothers," as if they cannot have a career other than being a wife and mother, which they then think means homemaker. Catholics do not think this way, we believe a person has both a vocation and a career and that the second exists to serve the first, whether you are a man or woman.

      @vrusimov Місяць тому

      It's not wrong. But to think that an in-debt, likely poor female college graduate can just go find a four million/yr pro athlete and get married is rather silly. There is no reason for that college to exist or for women to attend it if not to prepare themselves for the best career possible. Otherwise it's just an institution collecting tuition. If a woman wants to reject college, get married and let her guy be the breadwinner she can do that. The women who attended that college aspire to something more or they wouldn't have bothered wasting their time and money. It's not a crime for woman to want something more than children and a traditional family...at least right away.
      It's a choice at the end of the day. The anti-feminists and feminists alike take things too far. Don't have children if you are not prepared to do what is necessary to raise them. Life planning is more the problem than anything else. You CAN choose not to immediately have children, even in a marriage. If you can't afford daycare and other things that might be required then why not wait until your financial situation is more suitable? In today's society it is FAR more likely that you will have husband and wife working to make the ends meet...OR...to have the type of lifestyle desired. Sacrifices, compromises, planning. Again, not every woman can just go find a millionaire athlete to take care of her and potential children. Butker is far more the exception than the rule. And his parents are professionals. He didn't grow up poor according to record. Men typically don't maximize their earning power until later in life. In their 20s they are more likely to be short on the financial side than not.

    • @anethingelse2330
      @anethingelse2330 Місяць тому

      @@vrusimov I agree with not having children if you’re not in the right frame of mind and financially stable to do what is needed to raise them. Also with compromising, if both parties can figure out what is best for the family without causing harm to each other, then that’s how it should be.

I disagree with the panelist who said his address was off-topic. It was highly appropriate because he was trying to tell them how to balance their career - family and work. He didn’t need to talk about careers because they spent four years figuring that out. But he did need to talk about an area that causes so much dysfunction in the States today. And it was hard for us to leave our daughters in someone else's care. But as good parents, we did our research on who would best fit the needs of our family and the safety of our daughters. We were lucky and blessed to find the perfect woman to take care of our kids. It's been over 22 years since they were in day care. And we see Lee once and a while and she always asks about the girls! The we put the girls in private schools. I worked so many hours of overtime, but it was worth it. My wife was the glue for our family. She kept me level headed and focused. We backed each other up, made hard sacrifices, and did the best we could. My wife would have loved to be a stay at home mom, but she also told me something that I already knew. She was not the typical old fashioned home maker. She wanted to contribute in other ways, by working. Our daughters are grown now, and my wife is in heaven. It is rampant hypercapitalism and globalisation that has created an economic ideology and condition that requires most to live as dual income families. Socially constructed gender roles and social norms hand in hand with neoliberal ideology is what makes it difficult for women to be wives, mothers & career people. Political policies around parental leave, superannuation etc also contribute to inequity. Look at some European policies and you'll see greater equality. I'm a stay at home mother and a feminist. The 2 are not mutually exclusive. Go do a deep dive into what feminism actually is... clearly you don't quite get it.

    I think the point that the women in the audience had to put in the same amount of work as the men in order to graduate and telling them that the best thing that they can do is to stay at home is tone deaf when he makes millions doing a job that isn't even a real job. His wife has the option to stay at home. The majority of people don't have the option to have one person stay home. The majority of people require 2 incomes in order to survive. If men want women to stay home, then they need to bring home more money. His speech makes all of the effort of the women to graduate equal nothing.

    Women are in a position where they need to choose a pre children career, that can be part-time during child raising years, and can go back to permanent part-time once kids are at school or just choose to stay at home, work from home..
    But it's statistically proven, that trying to be a full time career 'boss', and a hands on part-time mother, is really hard work and unfortunately, it's the mothering role that gets delegated to someone else. This makes for extremely stressed, guilty, exhausted women... It's not a great recipe for a happy life.

    The idea that women must choose between career and family is a false dichotomy. You can be both a dedicated professional and a loving homemaker. Embrace the complexity of your roles, and seek partners who share the load. Remember, it’s not about “bringing home the bacon” or being a “mere homemaker.” It’s about creating a harmonious life where both partners contribute equally. As you step out into the world, remember that you are not confined by outdated norms. You have the power to shatter stereotypes and redefine success.
