    when ruby says her outro “ i hope you have a more than a productive week” is so effective because i really do imagine and hope that the week will bring me not only productivity but also valuable realizations, enlightenment, and moments joy - that few seconds of excitement for what the week may bring excites me every time.

    Ruby - Please if you could do a short guide to Early Modern literature, I would really appreciate it! I'm super new to the era, and aside from the Bard, I haven't experienced much from that time! Could be a fun way for you to share your passion!

    I have come back to watch Ruby's videos after almost two years. I used to love watching them and they helped me build a good headspace whenever I was feeling blue. Went through a tough time and gave up doing a lot of things after that. Finally, when it feels like things are looking up, I have returned to her videos knowing that they hold such a comforting place in my heart. I'm grateful.

    Comment on Self-Care: Your “freshens flu” brought back so many memories for me and I feel I want to offer just a tiny bit of a story and a caution. So, II think one of the reasons I love your channel is that you remind me of me a bit when I was in university waaaaay back in 1990. The caution about self care, and the reason it puts a smile on my face to see you masking and sanitizing when you’re ill, being careful of your and other’s health, is that I got “freshers flu” about six weeks into my first term and was desperate for about 8 days, and then, thinking I was clear to forget the whole thing, got it AGAIN directly after. Unfortunately, something turned on an an autoimmune response and the resulting chronic fatigue, Myalgic encephalomyelitis, and then SLE Lupus really derailed my life. Studies show now that “freshers flu” is responsible for many cases of autoimmune illness in young women.. Good for you for prioritizing self care! Cheers and good health to you!

For my great-grandmother and grandmother, the most normal thing was to take a few days off and focus exclusively on health. When you had the flu, you had the flu. You didn't go to work, you didn't have to do projects from home, or anything like that. And today people don't have time to be sick anymore. Ruby, it would also be so great if you could do a slo-mo study-with-me video, without any talk, just you studying for 45 minutes or so… you have such a great study-energy if you know what I mean, and I‘d love to do my work for uni alongside it, I think it would greatly improve my focus, and it would be so easy for you to do such a video with all the material you already have :-). Maybe you could even do a pomodoro, with a 5 min break where you stroll around the amazing scenery and architecture of Oxford. :-)

    I hated school and recently I realised that I never hated learning, I just hated school and the way people always wanted me to do things their way instead of letting me find what worked for me (I’m dyslexic and have health issues so I need to be mindful what I put my energy in). In the end I never had time or was allowed to do what I loved doing. In the end that led to me not getting my Bachelors. I’m thinking about starting studying again now but I’m still not sure. 😅

I asked her to do it her way, however she could best understand, I only gave her guidance and no pressure. It worked!

    Make sure you get time to go to Port Meadow and Parsons Pleasure. They're great this time of year. A bit wet, but fabulous. Also, plug for a mate of mine, the Oxford Gilbert and Sullivan society is doing the Pirates of Penzance in corpo near the end of November.

    A little help for your Latin study: The accusative singular of ager is agrum.
    At looking at the genitive you can know what the stem of the word is. In this case it ist agr (-i is the ending for genitive singular), so the correct form of ager would be agrum. (An exemption of the rule would be when the word is neutral and nominative and accusative are the same).
    Hope that helps!

    I would love to listen to John Donne's sermons! How exciting ... even if they are read by someone else. As an Anglican, I think it's quite extraordinary that many clerics read sermons written by others (as I've noticed in reading 19th-century literature) rather than writing their own sermons every week which is the unquestioned practice in modern churches ... at least in the US. ;)

    I study biology & the environmental sciences and 10 year old textbook is considered outdated. However, this summer I got to read a photocopy of a 17th century botanic manuscript (by Elias Til-landz) as a part of a heritage plant course and it was just blissful. Looking at those ancient text is so mesmerizing, I envy you ❤

    A friend of mine did Latin in university too and she said it was very hard as it is a lot of new information in a short time. I am lucky to have studied it in school and still having the schoolbooks we used, I met with that friend to help her do some Latin from my old school book. We even discovered that the same author had written the schoolbook and the activity book they used at the university class. Long story short, the school book explained everything in much more detail and progressed more slowly, that was better for the beginning learning the basics. The schoolbook also didn't start with verb tenses and things like that right at the beginning, so for all of you university and above aged people out there it might be worth to look into kids schoolbooks for starting to study Latin :)

      Should adult learners use school books? The school books OUGHT to be more kid-friendly, but they may also assume you have a teacher to explain difficult points again in other words. The main problem with school courses is that they take SO LONG: typically going from zero to GCSE takes five years, and A Level another two years. Schools do a LOT of repetition when they teach languages, but the kids forget a lot of vocabulary over each summer holiday. On the other hand, kids are usually studying another ten or more subjects up to GCSE, whereas adults would not. Adult learners may be able to use better study techniques to get through faster.

    • @dorinah313
      @dorinah313 11 місяців тому

      @@faithlesshound5621 yes, adults get through it very much faster. When I learned with my friend at uni, we did multiple chapters in one sitting as it is quite repetitive. The book I used in school was the same from year 6 to 8 but I don't think we even finished it. So, it was very easy to look up grammar we learned before and it even came with a separate grammar book which was also useful. It's the orange "cursus" books for any German Latin learners out there :)
