I read Station Eleven a while back and loved it! Sooooo good. I really appreciate the hopeful view of a post-apocalyptic world. But I read it pre-pandemic--I imagine my covid experience would be very different!!

That’s a fun one! I listened to that whole series on audiobook during a long commute and it was really engaging.

Interesting themes and ideas in these books you've read ! I finished up my book for my french class and it was so moving and great ! I wanted to know, do you have any tips for doing analysis of literature? I am finding a struggle but not sure if it's the language barrier or I just haven't done it in awhie. Great video and glad your kitty didn't fall off 😆!

Oh nice! Which book was it? I hope we’ll get a full update in the next episode of Under the Orange Tree! Hmmm it could be tough due to language and just being out of practice. What works for me is just taking notes of things that interest me as I read, then organizing them when I’m done the Therese that interest me usually leap out and it just becomes a matter of editing these thoughts and reactions.

@@willsinfinitelibrary8311 This is pretty solid advice and I'll certainly do this for my next book ! It was Tiohti:ake and you bet they'll be an update. Have you been reading my podcast notes?

@@ladyorange9915 it helps if you start reading with that plan in mind but not much if you’ve already read the book 😅 oh very cool. I remember you talking about that one. I didn’t know there were podcast notes! 🫢

Hey great break down of the books. I read the Sea of Tranquility and enjoyed it. I was coming out of the pandemic reading funk so I enjoyed it being short. I do hope she writes more on the themes she introduced, but I was fine with the book length.
Btw, which writing craft book did you read (if you don’t mind sharing). And did you like it?

Hi Julia, I'm glad you enjoyed the video! That's a great point about the length of Sea of Tranquility--it could be a strength. I love the idea of books that are so epic in scope, but they can be really intimidating and this is one of the only books I've read like it because it was so accessible.
The craft book I mentioned reading this month was Meander, Spiral, Explode: Design and Pattern in Narrative by Jane Alison. I found it really interesting because it focused on how fiction doesn't have to adhere to any one structure, but can follow many patterns. It was the kind of book I think I'll use as a reference and study over time because it has lots of great specific examples from successful writers.

@@willsinfinitelibrary8311 ooh, thanks for that book recommendation. I have not heard of it before, but will have a look. Sounds like the kind of book to read when your mental demons say “you can’t write a book that way.” Thanks again.

@@willsinfinitelibrary8311 Hey, I have written, but not published in the past due to a major illness complications. I have been gaining strength and mental clarity gradually over the past 5.5 years. I believe around June I will dip back in the writing pool again and fingers crossed I will be healthy enough to physically do what I love.
My favorite boots on the ground writing guides are from James Scott Bell who has inexpensive easily understandable guides that I can apply easily to any kind of writing (He also contributes to The Kill Zone online blog which gives daily writing advice).
Natalie Goldberg’s writing practice isn’t exactly my writing way, but I find her books/memoirs very inspiring.
And also, if you didn’t know when Dean Wesley Smith and his wife Kris Rusch run a kickstarter if you get in on the low tier you are eligible for all their writing classes that they give away as they clear the streaks (??) . I forget the exact wording -these are classes worth several hundred dollars and really informative.
Ok, really long answer. Keep up your writing. And I really enjoy your channel. I should say despite the guides I put down I don’t always write genre fiction, I go where I want to write and have the most fun.

Thanks for the great recommendations, I will check these out! I’m glad you’re doing better, that sounds really tough. It’s so easy to get caught up with the publishing side of things, which is a lot of marketing and business, but the real reason we enjoy it is for the writing itself!
