Ys X: Nordics Nintendo Switch Review

How has the Ys series evolved, and where does the latest entry fit into the series? Some additional thoughts: - the soundtrack is so so great!!! - the story is actually pretty cool and had some great moments. - I’m not a big fan of combat systems that involve switching characters, but this is the best one I’ve ever seen. Thanks Will, I really love your authenticity and insights and agree about your book resolution for 2025. Have you read the Nightingale Chronicles yet by Jay Kristoff? So much fun, humour and adventure and magic. And epic footnotes...! This year I read a lot of 'popular series' which isn't normally my bag but I have been enjoying Rebecca Yarros Fourth Wing series and Sarah J Mass Reading Court of Thorns and Roses series, though preferred the Throne of Glass ones. This year I might try to get back into reading some more music biographies. I highly recommend Marianne Faithful's one, Cosi Fan Tutte, Dead People I Have Known by Shaun Carter (NZ musician it's brilliant) and the best one is Clothes, Clothes, Clothes. Music, Music, Music. Boys, Boys, Boys by Viv Albertine who was in The Slits band. I tend to get books out that are 600-700 pages which I can last me 2-3 weeks which I like. Going to start reading Brandon Sanderson this year as well which has been recommended to me :)

Hey there, Will! It's great to see you! Sounds like you've been reading some interesting books. I've read "Pet" - I highly recommend it if you're a fan of magical realism. A companion novel to "Pet" is "Bitter," which is about Pet's mom. I just finished reading "The Price of Salt" by Patricia Highsmith, a book that's been on my TBR for a while. A 5 star read, in my opinion. Take care! Tammy

Start with Another Roadside Attraction - then follow on in chronological order. It is possible to sense his development and, maybe from that, his muse. He appears to have been born with an exceptional talent for words. He says he was talking full sentences when he was only one year old, and his mother was writing down his stories when he was only five years old. This is similar to a musical prodigy. To get some clues about the source of his imagination, listening to podcasts from the Alan Watts foundation may shine a light.

agreed. It was read to me ~ by dear one now passed; however, since the last couple years, reminders of relevance from the book keep appearing in life , and i am grateful. ( the lighten up aspect can sometimes bring tears, because the trickster-archetype naturally highlights where our world ( view ) has lost room for levity of spirit. ( our true nature ) . The only other writing i find this ( skillfull laughing absurdity 🌈) moment within, are interactions of don juan and carlos ~ with don juan's friend, Genaro. Those two and their antics with carlos ~ They are the only ones who are real to me in the way that t. robins and this story are. This is all about unseating the 'ordinary mind' and making the ( one's ) view wide and open. ~ I now think that it was no coincidence that jitterbug perfume was read to me along side translated works of Tibetan spiritual masters. I believe we love Robins because he uses to the most mundane along with the most wonderous .. contained within time, culture and space to sort out the essence ~ the rare purfume ~ what is the ultimate essence: the endless interplay of the form and formless which are in an endless love song, love story.. why and how we exist.. so, dear, your favorite book is probably a doorway, not a wall 🌼🙏🏼🤍 I'm looking forward to reading it again; I'm sure i will hear my loved one's voice in it, reminding me : Lighten up !

Aww I love that you gave The Name of the Wind a second shot and finished it. I read it several years ago now, so I should probably re-read it. But weirdly I have the complete opposite viewpoint. I got lost in the world, I felt like it was on a trajectory for him to find out what was behind what happened to his parents.I found it all very mysterious and I guess it is a slow burner but I couldn't stop reading it. Have you read Sarah J Mass's Throne of Glass series? I read all of them last year and enjoyed the characters and challenges the main character faced and there was a lot of magic :) Recently I read 2 of the Birdsong Trilogy by Sebastian Faulks. They were well written..it was hard to read about World War II and the beginnings of the devastation of that time and what people went through and Birdsong itself was quite sad too. I've just picked up and about to start a new sci-fi series Rosewater by Tade Thompson so hopefully it's a good one. In-between these I started to reread one of my favourite books Important Artifacts and Personal Property from the Collection of Lenore Doolan and Harold Morris by Leanne Shapton. This is a fictional tale of a couple's relationship told by their photos, letters etc that is being 'auctioned' off. I totally love it. Great humour, insight into their characters, they're very cool people and shows how a relationship starts and progresses. Something different that your usual novel. Thanks Will and see how you get on in Feb :)

And I did feel more of a focus and progression toward the end and finally felt caught up in the plot, I just usually don’t like to talk about the ends of books for spoilery reasons. Maybe I just read it too slow because it did take me many months. This are some great recommendations. Hi Will, I just discovered you today searching for Tom Robbins and watched your thoughts on each novel. I read Still Life last year and Cowgirls and fell in love. I'm keen to read Jitterbug and Legs now. Really interesting that In The Name of the Wind didn't grab you - I really loved it and the sequel. My other favourite fantasy adventure fun series is The Nevernight Chronicles for some fun, quirky and funny adventures. The novel is littered with footnotes. At first I was like - who on earth writes footnotes in a fiction novel? What ego! And near the end there's a gap in footnotes and I'm craving one. Then he writes a footnote on not having footnotes for several pages. Anyways. I loved it!

So good to see you, Will! My mom and I both wanted to see you at Christmas, but couldn't due to illness - we both had a bug (not COVID) that knocked us out the week before Christmas. I've just finished reading This Book is Not a Book About Benedict Cumberbatch - The Joy of Loving Something - Anything -Like Your Life Depends on It by Tabitha Carvan. The author talks about how her obsession with the actor Benedict Cumberbatch and the TV show Sherlock fueled her investigation into how girls and women are shamed into being quiet about their interests/obsessions, whereas men are allowed to "play" and be as vocal as they want about their interests/obsessions (i.e. sports). It was laugh out loud hilarious and much, much more poignant than I expected. (I'm not at all a tremendous Benedict Cumberbatch fan, but I know many people are.) I look forward to watching your future videos! - Tammy L.

This review started me on the path with Tom Robbins. I've read Jitterbug Perfume and Still Life. What would be your recomendation next?

That is amazing to hear!!! I hope you’re feeling those erleichda vibes. If you enjoyed those two and want something “similar, I’d say maybe Skinny Legs and All or Even Cowgirls Get the Blues. They’re all quite different but those were all written closest together and I think there are some through lines there at least in terms of the feel.

I read Gidions bible in Cache Creek in a terrible motel one time. It was a white knuckle drive but the next day I made it to Prince George which opened an interesting chapter in my weird weird life. Greetings from the wild west of British Columbia!!🤠🤠

Taking things too seriously and not seriously enough: it's just like when the monk drops a turd in the main character's glass of milk.

Long live the Mangelwurzel!!! I read this book every couple of years, just so I can have that closeness feeling to it, that you spoke about at the beginning of your video. You also seem to express some hesitancy about sharing, for fear of other people not understanding. When I was little and feeling that way, my mom had a phrase she would say, and it always brought a smile to my face. It didn't solve anything, but it picked up my spirits. The phrase: "Pee on their bald heads, even if they ain't bald" (It worked every time.)

That's fantastic! Yes, I'm always trying to find the right frequency to re-read to keep the feeling alive but not dilute it. Every couple years sounds just about right. And I love those words of wisdom!

Still Life… was my first. I worked at a restaurant where a customer left a very well-loved copy (read as: held together with packing tape and hope) and one of the servers read it, loved it, and started a chain where after a year, basically everyone had read it. I was the last, and happened to leave just as it was my turn. I still have it. We all smoked camel lights, and were in our early 20s, basically the perfect substrate for Robbin’s charming prose to grow. I have since read all of his books. I agree with basically all of your points. My fav is probably Skinny Legs and All. Every time I pass a random spoon on the sidewalk, I think of it and smile to myself.

Wow I've never encountered Tom Robbins novels, with all the Pynchon & Cormac McCarthy Craze going around. This Mr. Robbins must really be something for him to be your favourite.🤔 How about Vladimir Nabokov's PALE FIRE, have you come across this masterpiece?🤯

He is often compared to Pynchon, or mentioned in the same breath but kind of quirkier and more humorous. I have not read Pale Fire! Thanks for the recommendation!
