This podcast - the entire channel - has become one of my favorite 'talks' around painting tiny soldiers. And good god, is Peachy a chill & lovable person. Genuinely talking about GW, without trashing them constantly *(which seriously is annoying hearing it over, and over how evil GW is)*
Aww thanks Shari, we’re pleased our chats are entertaining, I’m a certainly a big fan of the GW hobby, and tbf there was a reason I stayed at GW for 20+ years, that being said I also have the odd gripe with them too. Thanks for watching Peachy
@@thepaintingphase That i totally understand, having gripes with them. I mean, i just buy the plastic 'toys' of them and sometimes i am annoyed by them, but you worked for them. Can't think of a person that doesn't have gripes with their former employers.
This is rapidly becoming my favorite painting channel. The tutorials are great, but these chats are really special. It feels like I’m painting at a table with a bunch of mates while chatting constant hobby. Amazing content!
Honestly I'm enjoying these weekly chats more than most other hobby content out there. Always balanced, nothing clickbaity and you guys just seem to really love what you do. Joined the Patreon and just getting stuck into your backlog now. Great work lads :)
I would love a Peachy and Duncan talk. Just them two reminiscing and spilling the beans. Maybe then Peachy will be able to continue with his "My theory is that when Duncan left..." comment he never got to finish.
Love the relaxed nature of the talk show. Feels like you are talking with your friends. I know the swearing hurts the algorithm but it adds so much to the relaxed tone.
I have also accidentally purchased a Dry Pot once. It was Eldar Flesh and I did manage to find a use for it in final highlight drybrushing stonework on terrain. Because it is basically ready to rip, it made knocking out large foamcraft terrain pretty damn quick!
Look forward to this every week now. Also I think seeing a relative newbie attempt to paint something like Mortarion would actually be genuinely useful and interesting. I reckon your skills will evolve pretty sharpish taking on that big lad.
Yeah that’s a great point, a good way to see all the issues a relative new hobbyist would suffer on such a mini, and then hopefully assist anybody in avoiding the same pitfalls and errors. Great idea!
Something I would love to see is a tale of four (in this case three I suppose) gamers. Those were always my favourite articles in White Dwarf. To see each of you pick, build, convert, create lore, paint and play say a combat patrol each would be awesome!
It's pretty amazing that y'all basically spitballed for 45 mins and are still thoroughly entertaining. I honestly can't get enough of these long-form talk shows.
Necromunda finally came back. I am so happy, this is what we keept playing all the years. Looks like GW found a way to have it somehow also financially relevant with expansion packs etc. Is it there to stay? What do you think? Any stories on how it was developed, seen, discussed within GW in the past?
Peachy Props for speaking your thoughts on NMM I am also a guy who appreciates NMM skill but doesnt like them because they dont work in 3D space in different environments Thanks for validating my opinion
I'm with Peachy on all 101 counts. I like the unintended novelty that the screw thread on the old handle looks to be a standard type for camera equipment; if nothing else that opens up options for different grips. The only success I've had with Dry paints was following Duncan's WarhammerTV video for painting a Knight. I have two pots of Necron Compound and one of Praxetti White, all barely used and now feel rubbery and possibly dead. Alternatively, Cassandora Yellow: other than a predecessor to Contrast, what place does/did it have? My experience tells me that it's good for colour-shifting but not actually shading. NMM is good for models that will get locked in a cabinet and only seen from a specific angle. Like you say, it serves little purpose on gaming miniatures. There is debate to be had with regards to recreating metallic embroidery on cloaks, etc since they don't reflect like metal, but that's usually more restrained than the usual applications. I don't usually glue flying stems onto models if there's a choice, but they're so brittle anyway and there's the frosting effect of super glue.
Ace video, love it! Personally, for me, I view NMM in a similar vein as I do to being able to drive with your feet - It seems a lot of effort to learn relative to the benefit I'd derive from knowing how, seems less efficient than the technique I already use (just using metallics and a wash - NMM certainly wouldn't help me get models on the table any quicker!) and while I'm in absolute awe of people who can, I know it's just not a skill I'm going to want use in this lifetime! Don't get me wrong, all in favour of learning new things and all that, but it's just not something I would ever *want* to do! Keep on making fun stuff guys!
100% agree on NMM. I think the technique can be great for unnatural colours on unnatural surfaces like power blades. But sometimes you do see a lot of work where its clear the NMM is no longer being used to serve the model itself, it's simply to display the talent of the painter. Which if that's what someone wants to do, fair enough, it is a technical challenge. But I agree. I don't think it should be the standard to aspire to. Often time its over used and doesn't look as good as simpler, quicker techniques.
Peachy, you're absolutely right about NMM. It makes no sense in this context especially since we have the technology to make all these lovely metallic paints.
Totally agree re knights, it's supposed to be a strategy game. What's strategic about marching 4 super heavies down a board!? Also agree with dry paints, you can dry paint with normal paint and they end up going weird anyway.
When I did my Morty I used colorshift greens and purples on the wings, then I used bright green ink and sprayed water on it. Much quicker and looks great
Love these videos! I never felt I knew Peachy before he joined The Painting Phase. Always enjoyed his painting but now I enjoy the person so much more :)
Alarith Stoneguard was the model that made me interested in the Lumineth in the first place. I just think they look cool and the novel by Dale Lucas cemented my love for them. They are a real punishment to paint, but I will have my pink Lumineth army someday.
Gotta echo some of the comments here, I don't usually watch either painting videos or chat videos but this does feel like sitting round the table with mates. I reckon gaming content with this sort of chemistry would be fantastic too.
Good chat, on the NMM I think it's a great skill expression and has a place for competition painting, but it has become seen as a goal. I don't think it really works for gaming pieces, except for concepts, personally; people certainly should feel it should be part of their own painting journey, or it is required to be a good painter.
I totally agree on the NMM take it can be a fun challenge but it more often than not looks out of place on the table top. And often in a not great way as the technique is often centered on an optimal viewing angle that doesn't always look like what is intended when seen IRL in play or in a display.
Hang on, people don't like the painting challenges? UA-cam's chock full of videos on how to paint pretty much anything but the only place I've seen arsing around while painting is here. And it's great.
@@thepaintingphase Heck knows! I did it and then when I started working in a toyshop I started asking people each time they bought a dry paint, only once in 5 years did someone want the dry stuff (came off the range for retailers when they did wave 2 of contrast thankfully, except shops got stuck with the leftover stock...)
Great chat as always, love these videos. I was using the dry paint Tyrant Skull on some old-style Cadians as you were talking about getting rid of dry paints lol. It's less effort to prepare the paint for drybrushing than "normal" paints so I really like them, I also bought wrack white for zenithal highlighting and it has worked great with contrast paints. (I'm a fairly new painter and don't have a steady hand so edge highlighting is too hard for me)
Also, admittedly NMM is great for photos and display, but the true true skill is to create a 3d NMM effect. Miniac and ninjon during Golde Demon UK podcast has shown an example of amazing NMM that works from multiple angles and that's something truly unique in my opinion
Great episode! I agree that in a 3D space like a miniature NMM looks odd and seems not worth the effort. Though, for photography, specifically, it is quite nice looking in that 2D perspective.
I am glad to hear I am not the only one not sold on NMM. As was said it's impressive but I just don't get it personally, at least not across a whole army
Some of the dry colors like that pastel yellow would be great as layers, but I'm definitely finding the only dry paints I use are terminatus stone and tyrant skull mostly for bases or desert or rocky terrain. I've also never had a good pot of necron compound and it's always been a block of rubber. Great chat, fellas!
A bunch of the initial drys were turned into ‘edge’ paints which later became layers, such as Dorn Yellow, lugganath orange, gauss blaster green etc. but yeah could’ve done with a bunch of them as layers tbh.
Just add water to them if you want them to act differently, I don't like Ryza Rust as a dry brush I don't have minis that would need a dry brush of rust. So I use it on Ork weapons but make it a wash to add to creases, I find it looks way nicer. As a dry brush I didn't like it being way to bright that way.
Really love these videos. My first kit bash was a Dark Eldar warrior riding a warp beast, my mates loved it even though it was all held together with blue tack.
I was once at the "Ultimate Warhammer Experience" wherein we were lead around backstage at Warhammer World and got to speak to various folks about the hobby, and our guide was part of the department that makes the tools etc, and I actually asked him why no GW wet palette, and he said in addition to the reasons mentioned here (i.e. too many other companies make them) there's no way to really "Games Workshopify" (his words) them so they'll likely never make one.
I've been really enjoying the videos you guys are putting out , both chat and painting. Appreciate that you cover different styles of the "basics" too, as the vast majority of vids on the site seem to go towards the complex methods (fully agree on the NMM) and neglect these. With the flying bases (which I also used to find a pain), I've started magnetizing mine recently on the top of the stand/where it connects to the model. Found it makes a huge difference in stopping them snapping off, stability, transporting models and best of all, they tend to make a satisfying "twang" when you connect them.
That badly painted marine is the best video I've seen in years. It gave me so much joy and made me laugh so much! 😆 silly videos are the best! I'm silly in all of mine too, makes it more fun for yourself!
I love these chats. Definitely my go to while painting and video gaming. Room 101: I'd put in liquid greenstuff. That stuff was shite! Also, did you iron that jumper or sleep in it? Bit of Pritt stick on the inside to get a better seem next time bud👍
Hearing you guys talk about your new year new army ideas and plans, I would love to see you guys do a Tale of Three Gamers style videos on your armies. Would find that so inspiring and cool to see. Love your content, it's like watching guys you would have a beer down the pub with.
Great video! I completely agree that the scale of the Imperial knights compared to a regular game of 40K just feels off. They are simply too large and there are too few of them, the same goes for primarchs. Thematically they scream for larger games than 2000 points. I still love the models and I have a Knight army, but I have them mostly as a hobby project that gets some game time, if I play a truly massive game with some infantry as ally.
Would love to see gaming on the channel and more skirmish stuff (Necromunda, Warcry, etc) These minis are often great sculpts and the limited number lends to extra creativity and attention to detail
Absolutely agree on NMM! Definitely a hobby gimmick. Very easy to get swept up in the 'wave' in this hobby. Looks nice but not for me. Great channel been really enjoying it, keep up the great content!
So true for the NMM don't really understand why puting so much effort when we luckily have metallic paint it's like using a smart phone to do Morse. Best show btw keep it guys 👍( I still respect the time and skill NMM requires just don't feel i would like to bother)
Peachy.... I agree with your opinion on the cow elves from AOS completely. High elves are such a cool concept for an warhammer army and to see such a bad idea ruin an entire range. Its why I want the old world to come back so I can get some real Asur models.
Wish Games Workshop would do more with genestealer cultists, sometimes feel like an after thought it seems. Though I do love the kitbashing and now have jackals running in on the cold ones, also might have ended up with necromunda bodies on the metamorphs. Great way to get to use all the cool models without having to start a new army, hehe. The cultist kill teams are fun, though I don’t win much with them I can always jump in with my nids that always do if I feel like a change.
“Two fingers of Necromunda coming your way” “Ooh, you wouldn’t want Vicks on a suppository, would you?” That’s the kind of content you don’t get on other hobby channels…
Speaking of Kill Team, maybe it's just me, but I thought Peachy's KT18 conversion videos were far more interesting than the KT2021 bespoke teams. Would love to see more conversion work along those lines!
I for one love this new dirty Peachy that has been unleashed to the world. Like a nefarious Lovecraftian (or genestealer) cult, it's always been lurking in the background (pegging!) but now it's finally time to throw back the hoods and revel in the light.
No hate to anyone, but here's a rebuttal to the NMM argument because most people who dislike it use the "only one angle" reasoning: We paint light, not any particular material. We paint a single instant, or "animation frame," if you will. By painting NMM, you are able to align the highlights on each material that you're painting. Using metallics, on the other hand, is the more unrealistic, because while the painted highlights on your leather, or cloth, or flesh, are static, the highlights on metallic paints are effected by the ambient light in the real world. This causes dissonance and breaks the "single frame" illusion. Here's another example: taking the time to paint the highlights and shadows on a gemstone and then using gloss varnish on it. The gloss varnish defeats the purpose of painting those highlights because the real-world light reflected by the gloss varnish clashes with the light you've painted.
I'm just looking for my pitchfork and torch for your views on NMM 😂😂
😂😂😂 I have an apology video filmed and ready just incase lol
When you say pitchfork and torch do you mean gold paint and matt varnish? The things you learn on The Peachy Phase 😂
Thing is tho, he’s right
Please, for the love of God, can you organise a hang out and paint with Peachy and Duncan?
I’m always available, it’s getting that other fellow Duncan to align with the stars that’s always the rub.

Absolutely agree on NMM! Definitely a hobby gimmick. Very easy to get swept up in the 'wave' in this hobby. Looks nice but not for me. Great channel been really enjoying it, keep up the great content!
As soon as you said it, I heard it. I can't unhear it now, Peachy does sound like Gordon Ramsey!
So true for the NMM don't really understand why puting so much effort when we luckily have metallic paint it's like using a smart phone to do Morse. Best show btw keep it guys 👍( I still respect the time and skill NMM requires just don't feel i would like to bother)
Honestly your content is top tier
Thanks Stephen!
The cultist kill teams are fun, though I don’t win much with them I can always jump in with my nids that always do if I feel like a change.
absolutely loving these podcasts
Love these hang out vids, a PeachCast, if you will. 😅 Gives me a sense of sitting in a hobby shop and listening to a convo happening over the way.
Loving the content, chilling and chatting is great!
“Two fingers of Necromunda coming your way”
“Ooh, you wouldn’t want Vicks on a suppository, would you?”
That’s the kind of content you don’t get on other hobby channels…
Great episode of the painting peach. Who knew Ghandi was a scouser.
Another great episode guys!!
Cheers Boss.
*I appreciate even more the open opinion on NMM. It's a sentiment I share.
It’s all fun and games until he threatens you, with two fingers of Necromunda! - Geoff
I also hate NMM. There are dozens of us.... dozens!
No hate to anyone, but here's a rebuttal to the NMM argument because most people who dislike it use the "only one angle" reasoning:
We paint light, not any particular material.
You need to take the Squidmar approach, start adding Gordon Ramsay into all your thumbnails.
"We make Gordon Ramsay's dream Warhammer army"
It’s like you’ve been a fly on the wall in the studio.
@@thepaintingphase Can't wait to start screaming at you in the comments for stealing my idea
