"Fake User" is confusing. It's basically an "Unused" material, so assigning the unused material to an "empty" object is more like the logic. I love your thoroughness, Ryan!
That's what I was thinking, too... they should have used clearer terminology. Maybe "Preserve Unused Material" or something? I also agree that Ryan broke it down nicely for us (as per usual).
This was very good to know information, I was wondering how to set up a file to store multiple materials without having a bunch of shader balls repeated to hold the materials.
Great video because I've never understood what a fake user was used for. QUESTION: Around 2:33 you open the drop down and say the Blue material is missing. Did you mean to say the red material is missing? Thanks
Thank you Ryan King ! Now when I make more games in Blender I now know I can make my materials save without them being on an object. This really helps in Blender! 👍😄
Sweetness! Thanks for the great explanation Ryan! I hope you and your family had a great weekend, and I hope you're looking forward to an awesome week. Let me give everyone a WOO to start out this Monday: WOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!! 😃
Excellent video, thank you! As a former C4D user, I REALLY miss a feature like a "materials" tab. Took me long enough to learn that materials have to be assigned to an object. I used to have a library of materials and drag-and-drop them to see which would fit the best. I'm fairly new to Blender so maybe that's actually doable and I just don't know it yet.
Bro I'm just stuck in a problem please help. I've a scene in blender in which I used a plane to make a board and then used a solidify modifier on it and after that I'm using draw sharp in sculpting mode but it is not working and also It is not working on other objects too I don't know why this is happening Please help me
Quick solution is: 1. Apply modifier (click little arrow in your modifier, and click "apply") 2. Click on your object (your board) 3. Came to sculpting mode. 4. Press ctrl + r (it will remesh your object) and now you can sculpt on it with "draw sharp" brush 5. Try to use draw sharp brush on your object. Two importand shortcats In sculpting mode: R - retopology mesh (Drag mouse to change topology mesh if you need more topology or less) Сtrl + R - remash (it will apply topology on your object, and you can sculpt on it) If you want to sculpt more freely: 1. Click on an object 2. Enter the sculpting mod 3. Activate Dyntopo in the upper right corner 4. Click ok if the window appears. 5. Try to sculpt on the object with different brushes, But don't use "Draw Sharp" because it doesn't create a new topology even in this mode, try using other brushes
his is really helpful and glad I know and I'm gonna be spamming that button from now on haha. It seems like fake user on should actually be the default. Is there an ad on or something that defaults to fake user on every time you create a material/node setup?
glad you like the video! I don't know of any addon that sets it on, on default, but you could go to the Blender Market and search for something like that.
Well if you make lots of data, but then don't use it, then the Blender file data would get bigger and bigger with all of the unused data. so it kinda helps to clean up the Blender file.
Much needed tutorial, thank you good sir! Can you make a tutorial explaining animation transforms? I've ruined a few models/amaratures by not knowing how to clear transforms properly
Thank you for the explanation. Every time I see "fake user" I rofl. At least now I understand it's actually useful. Still, it's possibly the worst way of naming "keep" "retain" or "preserve". I guess that's one way of reminding users the software they're using is free.
I've done a lot of tutorials and read a lot of forums and made my own stuff now. Not one person has explained this lol. Also fake user is the worst name for it. Thank you!
Hmm so its keeping a material that's not on a object , it did happen that I made materials first and then made the object but when I loaded it back up I had to remake the material XD now I just make the objects first and leave materials for last but I can see this helping if your prototyping materials oh I downloaded all your materials playlist and I made 3/129 sofar XD
@@RyanKingArt FR: je me demande juste pourquoi ils ne laissent tout simplement pas ces matériaux là et nous laisser les supprimer nous-mêmes. °_ ° EN: I'm just wondering why they don't let the materials where they are and let us deleting them by ourselves. °_ °
I don't understand why would you want that, I mean, it would make more sense (to me), to have that 0 on the side and have an option somewhere to remove all unused things on the scene, in case you want to get rid of them before publishing final archive or something. Btw, thanks for the clarification, now a lot of things make sense :)
Thank you for your video. I thought "Fake User" meant something related to other people using the same file but not the owner of the file or something idk...
Most important tutorial of blender :D Its obvious some features are just written quickly to have them and aimed to the writers not to users, i understand that tho its a big old program, its an absolute beast tho, i love it
Now I understand why my material remove automatically
yep 👍

Well said! You should write the (non-fake) user manual for Blender :) @@denoffun788

Good luck
thanks so much!
Wow im so glad they added a feature that just deletes all my work automatically for no reason and it's set as the default.
Amazing 🤩🤩
Thanks Blender Stuffs! 👍
Very helpful! I always wondered about fake users in Blender and now I understand. Thanks for sharing!
Glad it was helpful!
Well Learned something new today
glad to hear that!
This was very good to know information, I was wondering how to set up a file to store multiple materials without having a bunch of shader balls repeated to hold the materials.
Yeah this would be a great way to do that. 👍
As an alternative to making as asset, which overwrites that icon. Subtle stuff.
The best channel since I started my blender journey last month much love from Nigeria, keep it up
thanks for watching my videos!!
Can you explain to us how TV intros and logos are made?
I might be able to make a video on how to do that. 👍
Great video because I've never understood what a fake user was used for. QUESTION: Around 2:33 you open the drop down and say the Blue material is missing. Did you mean to say the red material is missing? Thanks
Yes, I added the * with the text correcting myself in the video.

Great vid as always! Thanks for that. I forgot to count how many time you said "monkey" but not as often as "Fake User" thats for sure hahaha
Lol, thanks for watching!
Why does not Blender auto save those materials? I don't really understand why it is not enabled by default, what would be the cons?
Well if you make lots of data, but then don't use it, then the Blender file data would get bigger and bigger with all of the unused data. so it kinda helps to clean up the Blender file.
Great video, but I have a question: Are fake users only applicable for materials or I could use them for geometry nodes as well ?
Yes, as I mentioned at the beginning of the video, you can use them with textures, images, geo-node setups, materials, and other blender data.
@@RyanKingArt Guess I am running out of memory. thanks
