As a brother myself, this hits home.
Josh ever since I was little I was a history buff. I used to revel in listening to stories the old guys told me. I'm 76 years old and have so many stories about the old days that would shock most people. Before my legs gave way I would travel abroad and visited all of the 40+ of the 50 States. I've yet to tell my kids including grandkids 'cause there just not interested. I have a bunch of grandkids but all they seem to care about is their damn phones. Thanks be to GOD I'm also a writer and published 10 books, was an ex-columnist and is currently professionalizing my podcast. Since none of my family is interested in my past life I'm in the process of completing a book on the subject which hopefully should come out within the next two weeks GOD willing! No way will let my colorful past life be buried with me! Once the book comes out, if the editors like it, I send you a link where you can purchase it. In my working life I was a teacher, college adjunct professor, missionary, police officer, truck driver, income tax professional, artist, highway designer, writer, part-time astronomer, punch press operator, singles club operator, lecturer, actor you name it Josh I've done it! I thank GOD for such an adventurous life and guess what Josh, THE BEST IS YET TO COME!! As a cancer survivor I hope GOD give me 30 more years so I can crank out 20 more books and host more art shows; and they say hyperactivity's a handicap-HA! It's a gift.
One more thing, I even worked in a mental institution.

I live in Wyoming.My grandmother came to this state in covered wagon way back when it still wasnt a state.Her great uncle was the man that stole a generals quater hose and made the late night ride in the snow storm to warn Fort Laramie of an impending indian raid that didnt happen BECAUSE of the storm he rode through. His name was Portuguese Phillips.I LOVE the way that you cover history.I would REALLY love to hear your cover of his story.Its probably one that you would never consider covering,but I think you teach me things that family stories havent,lol

Very interesting video Josh. I had always wanted to know more about Billy the Kid's brother. Out of all the Wild West figures I always found Billy the Kid and Doc Holliday to be the most interesting. I always thought that Doc Holliday would be a interesting person to do a video on. I know that there is tons of documentaries about him on UA-cam but I always enjoy the way that you tell the stories of these people's lives.

I'm supposed to be prepping for a 6 day canoe trip in Scotland...I've spent the morning packing listening to old episodes, now a new one to stop me getting bored.
Really been enjoying your stories. And brother you couldn't be more right about people talking to their grandparents and great grandparents about their history. Veterans or not their stories die with them and myself being the self appointed family genealogist I have kicked myself on many occasions for not doing exactly what you said. For example my great grandfather was a veteran of the First World War, my other great grandfather was a navy veteran of the First World War and involved with engagements with Poncho Villa and had the medals to prove it. One of my grandpa's was in the Persian Gulf Command in WW2 which is the least known story of the war but extremely important and interesting and my other grandfather his tombstone has WW2, Korea and Vietnam on it and I get chills every time I say that.

I'm 54yo and it amazes me that my grandmother was 23yo when Billy the kid's brother died. She was alive when bronco Apache were still killing and scalping people..I wish I had been smart enough to sit down and just listen to her stories of her generation growing up in Central Alabama. I'm a trucker and your vids help make the miles fly by. Thanks.

I love The Big Trail (1930). John Wayne was friends with an aging Wyatt Earp. Wayne based his trademark walk on that of Earp's. A case of the real West meeting the fantasy West. At Earp's funeral in 1929, the Western star Tom Mix was seen to be in tears. I thank God for the real Western characters and the actors who played the fantasy portrayals. You have been of such an interest to all of us!
It appears that the thing about Earp and John Wayne knowing each other is an urban myth. In truth, the Duke based his on screen persona on cowboy and stuntman Yakima Canutt.

Great episode Josh!! I totally get what youre saying when you talk about how fastinating it is to learn about people who were born in the mid 1800's, and lived up thru the age of flight, and even in some cases up to the beginning of the space age!
I believe Laura Ingalls Wilder was born in 1867 and died in 1957 (same year i was born) but a few months before sputnik was launched, beginning the space age.
It just really gives me a sense or perspective that these people lived the haydays of their lives not all that much longer before we got our tickets to ride the big blue ball!
Lord only knows what will be coming around the corner next.
I am afraid history is due to repeat itself though.

one of the houses the boys stayed at for a little while was the Truesdells, Chauncey is the brother of my 2nd great grandfather and my 3rd great employed Billy, not sure his brother too, at their hotel for a short time

This reminds me of the story of a guy who survived the battle of the Alamo. He was on the North Wall. He got knocked unconscious. He simple got up and left and was given a land grant from fighting at the Alamo. I really wish he had of been tapped for the info he held.

@@WildWestExtravaganza I want to say his name was Bear. But the crazy thing was he got a land grant. The way the story was written he woke up after the assault. Now if he went to fight with Huston? After I read the story, I was thinking it was terrible lose of info, of how life was, the attacks etc.
@@WildWestExtravaganza Hey I am probably twice your age. That said, I do not remember were I read this. My best guess is to look at TX land grants after the revolution. I think that is were I looked to verify the story. Is it true? But there are possibilities. It is like the guy who claims he survived Little Big Horn. ???

@@kerrylangman214 Yea, I remember that guy, but forgot his name. That said, there is a retired KC detective who has some wild theories on Jesse James and the Knights of the Golden Circle. How it wasn't JJ who was shot in the back of the head and how he worked after that and was a KGC. But any time you hear people talking about the KGC, it is like not only are they on the crazy train, they are driving it. All of it makes for good stories. True?

Frank Coe's teenage daughter's boyfriend was shot for attempting to court Coe's teenage daughter from how I understand it. She was 17, I believe, and he much older. This is the story I've heard, but can't site any sources, so please take it with a grain of salt.

I was young when my grandfather passed away . But he passed away at 97 years old back in 1974. He didn't talk much. All I know was he drank ALOT living in chicago he was a cubs fan. And from family members I heard he was friends with al capone . And my aunt said al capone used too bring her chocolate milk from a black cow. My aunt was alittle girl but loved when al would visit for a few minuites.
It would've been interesting if Joe lived 20 more years, and saw the stir created by Brushy Bill. I wonder how Joe would've reacted. In fact would Brushy Bill even have made his claims, with Billy's brother alive to gainsay him?
I think it adds credence to the fact that brushy bill was a load of BS. If the brothers were close (which I have no reason to think otherwise, especially considering what these two went through together during a volatile period in time), why would billy run off and continue to supposedly communicate with others, but not his own flesh and blood. Makes no sense whatsoever

How about an episode or two on Tom Horn an old west character who played a big part in its history and who also never adapted to the coming of the 20th century and its civilized ways. A truly fascinating old west character who out lived his time!!!!! Keep up the great work, love your show.

Sadly, another of what we think we know about Old West figures like Billy the Kid, Doc Holliday, the Earp family, etc, is more folklore than fact. Now I'm only referring to those who have heard stories of these people, and not history buffs who truly study to separate the fact from the fiction. Another of the myths and legends about these folks came about due to journalists taking artistic license when telling their stories. The first publication about Billy the Kid was told from Pat Garrett's point of view. Biased would be an understatement. So for many years, Billy was seen and portrayed as a heartless, stone-cold killer.
Similarly with Wyatt Earp. When there was interest in his life story, a journalist was sent to interview him. Earp would only reply to the interviewers questions with a "yes" or "no" and never elaborated on anything. The journalist left with so little to work with, he made much of it up just to make it interesting. After Earp's death, his wife Josephine added to the story to ensure Wyatt's story always portrayed him as heroic. Only in recent decades have the real stories of Billy, Wyatt, and many others started to come to light.

@@WildWestExtravaganza Thanks. I have done my share of research into many old west figures. Something that often gets left out in movies about Wyatt Earp is that during the vengeance ride, Sheriff's Behan had deputized the group Wyatt, Holiday, and the others were chasing. In fact they had warrants from Behan for the arrest of Wyatt and his group.
Similar with the Young Guns movie, we see the Regulators deputized to serve warrants against the Murphy/Dolan faction. What bever gets mentioned is those same Murphy/Dolan boys the Regulators were chasing had been deputized by Sheriff Brady to seek and arrest the Regulators.
Unfortunately making a movie featuring both sides as lawmen would blur the line of who exactly we are supposed to be rooting for.
Over the years I've read many books on Billy & he is the coolest of old west out laws youth, mystery and going up against the crooked establishment pluse he spoke Spanish and liked the Latin women. I know Billy, Joseph, Jose Chavez, Dave Rudabaugh, Paulita Maxwell, and a few others this time around.

The only thing he could have told him to make him shake hands and part ways was that he did not kill Billy the kid and I'm not talking about brushy Bill who may or may not be Billy the kid. Billy the kid had an uncanny six sense add that to Pat Garrett shooting two other men thinking they were Billy or so he said means that he was not very concerned with shooting the right man. Billy sweetheart was Kin to Pat Garrett and he probably did not want to make her feel like a widow. Both deputies with him stated on their deathbed that their conscience had been bothering them their whole life because they signed a statement saying it was Billy the kid when they knew it was not. Also Pat Garrett's daughter told him her father told her that he didn't shoot Billy the kid that he faked his death with Pat Garrett's help and that they used a man that had died the day before a half Mexican half white man.
Damn ya know he shur looks afull lot like Brushy in ways? Kinda like a brother or cuzin??

The daughter of Pat Garrett and the two deputies are enough to convince me that absolutely positively Billy the kid walked away and when you consider that a woman swore up and down that she fed Billy the kid July 17th three days after he was supposed to have died and she knew him well. I mean she would have no reason to lie. To me there's a ton of evidence that he escaped and very little to suggest that he died.
I wonder if Mr McCarty ever ran into Brushy Bill 🤔

I've just finished reading Nolan's "The Life and Death of JHT"
In all Tunstall's many letters and diaries I was disappointed to not see a mention of Billy.
There is one of John Middleton who is described as " A man named Middleton who is in charge of Dick's outfit (Brewer)
Middleton is about the most desperate looking man I ever set eyes on(and that is not saying a little)
I could fancy him doing anything ruffianly that I ever heard, that is from his appearance, but he is as mild &composed as any man can be, but his arms are never out of his reach"

when most of the rest of the world was sleeping, more or less peacefully.
The only thing that would have altered a big brothers resolve, in that situation, was 1. The law officer, by his appraisal, was genuinely grieved and any trace of arrogance about the killing, any hint of malice, or entitlement, was not present.. and a true tragedy of human error, or judgement, or action, had taken place.. Something you wouldn't want to compromise the honor of your own soul by acting in base vengeance, rather than a deserved reckoning over..
Or 2, they hadn't really killed his kid brother..
Those are the only two options, were the unspoken code of the west, observed..

It’s a broadcast TV channel and they show old westerns Tales of Wells Fargo, Larime, Death Valley Days Etc. My sister works at a nursing home and she told me it’s what all the folks there watch as well. Jim Hardy is a investigator for Wells Fargo and almost every person I’ve heard you talking about I’ve heard mention on those show. By the way it’s an honor to talk with you. I feel kinda star stuck, your like my hero! Seriously since I found your channel it’s all I can talk about and haven’t watched tv in my free time since.
I agree with ya, the so called history channel is a joke these days I think. Glad ya told that about Joe marrying and about the boy, Claude seems the name was, also as for the story I recall something about Joe later taking the boy to family in Missouri named Henry Antrim, coincidentally this Henry was born 1855 like William Bonney claimed he was on the 1880 census ;) lol, and years later a boy was born from Claude that looked a lot like a certain famous Billy ;) if I recall the research correctly
