Elfego Baca & The Frisco Gunfight

- Wyatt Earp, Billy the Kid, Doc Holliday, Jesse James, Wild Bill Hickock - These are the names of legends. Names I think most people - even those with no interest in old west history - will find familiar. But for every one of these guys, there were a dozen others who were every bit as deadly and capable with a firearm, if not more so. Men who didn’t flinch in the face of death. Men who knew the smell of the black powder smoke and the crack of a bullet snapping past their heads.
Men who for whatever reason are largely lost to history. Or at the very least just not that well known. Men like Elfego Baca. The young store clerk who pinned on a fake mail order badge and single-handedly took on an overwhelming force of gunmen. The over 30-hour gunfight that ensued is considered, by some, to be the most lopsided of the wild west. All at the tender age of 19!
And don’t you worry your pretty little head, the rest of Elfego’s life was chock full of excitement as well. The man would go on to be tried several times for murder. Work as a sheriff, a lawyer, a detective, a district attorney, a prohibition-era speakeasy bouncer, dip his toes in the Mexican Revolution and even become a school superintendent. And yes, his life would inspire a Disney TV series not too long after his death. According to one biographer, Elfego Baca was "controversial. He drank too much; he talked too much; he had a weakness for wild women; he was often arrogant; and, of course, he showed no compunction about killing people.” And when it came to killing Elfego made no bones about it saying “If a man had it in mind to kill me, I made it my business to kill him first.” Sounds like the kinda guy we like around these parts! Who was Elfego Baca? Find out on this newest el gato nueve el vides I can’t speak Spanish worth a damn episode of Bloody Beaver’s Wild West Extravaganza! #wildwest #history #cowboy

I am a Baca who's father hails from New Mexico.
And I highly approve of your delivery of his story. Your Gringo Spanish cracked me up.
Muchas gracias!!!
this the mf that took shit from no one gringos, revolutionaries, gangsters he's my favorite character from the Wild West
Bro ty for this/ I am working on a script for Elfego Baca. Found out about him ten years ago when my uncle showed me the Disney episodes. I've made it my life's work to research Mr. Baca and you are spot on my friend. Only his father did not kill a prominent member of Belen. He killed two thugs also named Baca but hit a prominent member of Belen in the nose and was charged for the murder of the two thugs. Then Elfego broke him out of a Los Lunas jail on the Santa Ana day of celebration.
I stumbled across this man many years ago while reading about 'wild west' characters. I have always wanted to make a really good movie about him in, concentrating on his younger days. What a courageous man. He ranks up there with all the truly great men of the west.
Let's do it..I'ma writer
You know my name is Jeff and that's not a bad idea and I would be honored and I would be diligent to help to create something and bring something back to life that is a magnificent story maybe there is something I can do I too can write... They got a name for the winners in the world but the losers we could work on it together,... sometimes it's yes and no.... tough not to crack,... Okay pretty cool ideà ...think on it and carry on
2 years late here, but I’ve actually been working on an alt-history Tarantino style novel about him for a while now. This man’s story is incredible
Years later, the Baca family produced a famous descendant you may have heard of- Chew Baca
Damnit, I shoulda thought of that. Good one.
Good one! Think I crapped myself just a little bit.
Don’t forget his cousin Chew In Ta Baca
And the brother from another relationship.... He’s a Step Baca .
No it's chuy Baca
I remember that Disney show (I'm in my '70s). It aired around the same time as Zorro and Davy Crockett. I remember the shootout scene but that is about all I remember about the show. Thanks for the upload. He sounds like a pretty chill dude.
Thanks for listening
I've had my fair share of bloody beavers...no bragging here, just sayin. But, imagine my surprise when I googled about my favorite crimson passion only to stubble upon this crazy Wild West channel. Well, I've been hooked ever since.
Josh, you are one of the best story tellers I've ever encountered, and accidentally you're actually educating people 🤣
Too kind!
As a Mexican you better not call me a Latin X or whatever in the hell that is.
Hermano, admire people like you that edúcate the many viewers that seek stories like this one. Gracias
Never heard of him but love the western time s , And love you r storys so this i now gonna enjoy. Whit a smoke and something cold in my glass.
Right on I never heard this before my family tell me in the adobe house he was in during the battle he was making beans and tortillas and he always would joke around keep up the awesome work my brother love it
Thanks!
A common Mexican revolution era rifle was the short barrelled 7x57,like this one of his in the picture,of Pancho Villas?(A friend tried to once sell me one of those short ones from Mexico, but I refused as it had the serial number filed off).San Fransisco area is nice cattle country plus mountain country with elk&bighorn sheep. Its in western New Mexico.
I worked 9months in Socorro in 92&really enjoyed it there. Its a very old spanish name as you found.
I recall hearing of the movie on him but cannot seeing it.
Good program.
I gotta say Sir. U keep my mind busy. tnx.
I'm trying
You're the best I've found so far. I love history an know a lot of it. You nail it an teach me stuff I've never known before. Thank you!!
I like hearing about the lesser known outlaws and gun fighters keep up the great work.Look forward to hearing about doc
The 9 Lives of Elfego Baca aired from when I was 6 'till II was 10! I did watch it faithfully! I have a friend who lives in Socorro NM, whom my wife and I visited a few years back!
More Young Guns theme episodes…. So excited!
I DO remember the Disney adaptation of Elfego. The scene where he's avoiding getting shot at in the house has always stuck with me. I'd forgotten the title and Elfego's name, but When Count Dankula did the video on Don Alejo Garza Tamez, I was like "OMG! I remember seeing this when i was a kid! ...wait, what? 2010? ...does not... compute." lol
Thank you for this episode I saw the show when it first aired on The Wonderful World of Disney in the 60's also when someone
mentions Joaquin Murrieta as a hero I always set them straight Elfego Baca was a real hero
Because they don't want you to know the real history
Really enjoyed this episode Great Work! Sharing your podcast to my community page now ✌
Thanks
Thank you for the hard work.
My pleasure!
I had to pause it to tell you...I thought your first mention of a Disney show was one of your little "side notes" you so cleverly slip in 😂
What a colourful character! Never found such characters and actions in other countries. Truly unique. Maybe guns and the ready use of such, made the West what it was. Good listening.
Another great episode! Thanks for what you do. Great stories and the voice of a young Jerome Lester Horwitz.
Still with you guy, keep them stories comming!
Excellent description, I admire the way you tell a story. I came from a long line of storytellers and you are outstanding.
I truly enjoyed that. What an amazing character he was. I'm very fond of the stories of the wild wild West and you give them to me with so much excitement. I feel like a kid again watching Saturday afternoon wild wild west shows wanting to be a cowboys cowgirl LOL!
And I love your voice...
Thanks Deborah!
This one was great! Never heard of this guy before and it was awesome. Cant wait for more young guns peeps!
Nice! Elfego Baca has long been one of my very favorite wild west characters.

Oh your Spanish is good...and the attached meanings of the comments.
Keep learning more Spanish. As a part of your audience I applaud your attempt at speaking Spanish. There is plenty of drama and comedy tied to
This language... And I'm a big fan of both... Great story of a fellow Mexican. Lol... I'm an American of Mexican American... Just one of many other interesting individuals

I like the way you podcast man. Subscribed.
Why thank you, good sir
Great writing. Snappy delivery sprinkled with humor. Obviously lots of research. Looking forward to the next episode.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Up to your usual top quality work again. Loved this episode.
I read about Elfego Baca years ago. Like many others I seen the Disney program, in the late 50’s. I re@lly like it. I went to the library in Muskegon, Michigan. Great library, I never subscribed to any western magazine. I didn’t think they were very reliable. I read the Captain , last man standing with a cavalry saber in his hand. I knew when I was ten years old, I knew this wasn’t true. The Indians had know idea they were fighting General Custer. True west is about as reliable as the History Channel on TV. So sad too bad!
Well put, Roger
I’m gonna start dawning a sweet ass sombrero here in Indiana, Hoosier Hombre
Ahhhh yeah. Gonna be a great day. New BB. My MAN!
¡Qué Viva Nueva México! Las Tierras Malos ⚔️🇺🇲🇪🇸🇲🇽⚔️
Man, I really appreciate your creative writing skills! The way you articulate what you want the listener to hear is putting in the overtime. On a side note, I think Im gonna name the next pooch I get Elfego Baca?👊💪
That'd be an awesome name
Glad to see new stuff.
Outstanding narration..
I just stumbled across this podcast last week. All i have to say is. The history channel ain't got shit on you.
Ha! Thanks
Never heard of elfego Baca until last week and now I've watched and listened to something about him twice in the last week the first on a western show called to Wild West Chronicles about Bat Masterson reporting days and last week's episode with about El fago Baka and Frisco shootout
Excellent! Thanks
Great listen as always. Every time I hear your voice I imagine Danny Mcbride. Lol.
I'm actually related to Elfego. My dad told me all about him when I was young.
That's pretty cool!
Thanks for posting this video. There is not much out there about Elfego Baca so good job. You covered it very well and I appreciate it. I was planning on doing a UA-cam video on him myself. Great work.
Thank you! You should still do one.
Great video
Thanks
You have a great sense of humor my friend
I always imagine Kenny Powers narrating these videos. 😂 you sound just like him. Great stuff btw big fan
Thanks man
Great telling of the el feygo Baca story . Belive me when i say you got to watch till the end .
Thanks Simon!
Love this guy!!
Excellent episode.....most Non Texans dont know who Bleu Edmondson is not to mention pat green, robert earl keen, roger creager and the great ray wylie hunbard just to name a few....
Hell yeah
Most Texans also don't know or ignore the fact that it was overwhelmingly tejanos who fought against Mexico for statehood....European Americans only made up maybe 12 to 15% of the Texas independence movement
"This will be a short one", and Josh proceeds to go for a little over forty minutes... yup, you're a Texan
Dang! Fantastic episode!
Damn, this isnt even the 1st time ive watched this video but man, between your sense of humor and flinging around various words such as "ignant" (a life long friend i knew since age 5 would always say something to me like "what is ya Billy Ray, IGNANT!??" (Billy Ray was a nickname he gave me because of the ford LTD i drove at the time Gone in 60 seconds came out lol!).
Im starting to think youre my brother from another mother! A younger brother at least! Your videos i find so compelling to watch that im afraid to look if i dont have time to watch it or whatever it was i was supposed to have been doing at that time just is going to come in a late 2nd!!! WTH I'm retired and my wife likes me out of her hair when her shows are on (God what a waste of a good high def tv!) so who cares right!! Bring em on!!!
Haha, don't get in your wife's hair
Another great video man I've been watching all of them just found you channel
Glad to have you!
You are sooo funny, and I love your podcast.
Well done! And for the record us Spanish/Mexican Americans were not helpless. The Slaughters were Texans who tried to move in on our land. My greatgrandfather, Melquides Aragon was already there with his herds of sheep when the Slaughters tried to move in with their cattle. The ranch stayed in our family until my cousins sold it about 15 years ago. The only trace of the Slaughters left on the ranchwas a mountain by the name of Slaughter Mesa. Yes, he told his family not to trust the Tejanos because they were gentes malosos con ojos adults. (Bad people with blue eyes). Of course some of us Huspanics were and are blue eyed too.
Hispanics of NM are a special breed with many having Jewish roots. To call them Mexican is not accurate as they themselves differentiated between themselves and Mexicans who were from down south. I appreciated your informative post. Elfego Baca is buried at sunset cemetery in abq near my grandfather who was from Reserve himself.
You literally make these fun, bro! Kudos!
Thank you
Damned fine episode! I live in New Mexico, & this story rocks!
"Flee to the safety of Texas" in the 1880s?
Buddy, now that's what I call trouble.
Haha
Elfego was an authentic BMF; my hero! The dude was bad-ass!
I'll be 69 in September & I thought I've seen every Disney presentation ever made but that's one I don't remember.
I'll have to go check it out, maybe I just forgot the name of it.
I well remember the Disney series featuring Loggia as Elfego Baca. Hoaky as all get out now that I look back on it, but at the time it was a lot of fun for a small Georgia farm boy. Disney also made a series "Texas John Slaughter" with, I believe, Tom Tryon as Slaughter.
Yeah I'm Old As Hell & Rockin 72 right now...with more to come "God Willing"
I stumbled across your podcast only recently, becoming an instant Fan/Acolyte/Proponent/(you get the idea) and have been Binging for a couple of days, with no end in sight. I'll catch up sooner or later,so Keepem Comin Podnah
If, I get another dog. I think I'll name it "ELFEGO"
Hahahahaha yes big bucks ! Loved your broadcast !
Enjoyed you story..great voice!
Lelia!
Everybody’s gangsta till Elfego Baca.
Thanks for sharing the link to read more about the man. I thought it was so hilarious at the end of your video when they ask him what the man’s name was who he killed when they were cruising through Socorro, and Baca said, “ hell I don’t know, I was there to kill the man I wasn’t taking no cencus…”😭😭😭
great podcast i listen to it while playing red dead online
I remember being at my Uncles house for a visit, they had a television, hell we didn't even have electricity! The TV was on and the song "With Texas John Slaughter, men did what they auther cause iffen they didn''t the died!
Haha, great lyrics
Hey Josh. Greetings from Houston. I stumbled across your work on Spotify. I followed your recommendation and subscribed to you here on UA-cam. Thanks for doing what you do👍
Hello Houston! Thanks man!
I saw this “The Nine lives of Elfego Baca” when l was 6 or 7. Also Zoro and Davy Crockett on Walt Disney’s programs in the ‘50s.
Ahhh yeeeeah. New BB. Gonna be a good.....nah. A f’n GRRRREAT day.
I think the rifle he’s holding in a Mauser carbine in 7x57. My impression is Mexico of that revolutionary era was full up on .30-30 American made rifles and Mexican made or imported Mausers. Mexico produced high quality Mauser rifles up to the 1950’s.
It's a model 1895 probably German. Same ones the boers used
8:18 ahhh good o’l days 😂
I love the stories of our past. I luv ya man!!! Chingao 😆😆😆😆 LOL
I have heard of him and his famous shootout but I did not know, (until now) that he once lived in Topeka Ks, AKA T-Town.
Thanks for not having a bunch of background.... Music.... 👍
@37:45, don't forget Frank Lopez in 'Scarface' x)
You have a good voice for these videos
I'm born and raised in NM, would like to see you dive into "Las Gorras Blancas" a real lynch mob.
Cool suggestion! I will!
Please do something about Dallas Stoudemire, gunman and lawman
Like to hear your take on some of the west’s more famous females, Annie Oakley, Calamity Jane, Big Nose Kate, etc
I actually have heard of him. I read about him. He was cooking breakfast when he was attacked
My Great Great Grandfather. I was fortunate enough to meet my great grand dad, his son, as a child. If only I had the knowledge to ask him about Elfego. And in learning about him in history, the shitster upstart attitude he had in his youth seems to be genetic
Very cool!
I read about this man years ago. He taught Billy the kid how to handle a pistol, went up against over 100 slaughter ranch hands and lived thru it.
@BloodyBeaver Actually, I'm a Historian and I pronounce it Xianghis Khan. Just like I don't call Nordic people Vikings because you go on a Viking (pirate raid).
I once read that convicted and now serving time, former Los Angeles sheriff Lee Baca is a descendant of Elfego Baca.
Anyone know the rifle?? That front site is very distinct
Kidnapped as a toddler, bit all the squaws nipples, returned to sender 😂😂😂
Another great episode B.B. Really looking forward to the podcast on Chief Joseph. Just wondering since you plan on doing a episode on Doc Scrurlock, will you ever plan on doing a episode on Jose Chavez y Chavez?
Maybe
Good video.
Gracias
This man is a relative of mine 🤠
Very cool
@@WildWestExtravaganza A few siblings were telling me about this years ago and what did I care? I was a teenager 😂 and then my older brother who 65 sent me a text message about four years ago well I was going through my divorce 🙄 and I looked at some of those old text messages tonight from my older brother and it’s pretty cool 😎
Damn,I dig your musical taste $50 and a flask of crown rope the devil, ride him into town nobody gonna shut us down on$50 and a flask of crown.
Hey man can you send me the link to the Nate Champion story you did. I can't find it. Thanks
