I first came here purely for the Porsche 356 rebuild. Then I came here for the VW Beetle. Then I came here for the VW van. Then I came here for Triumph. Then I came here for the Ranalah. Then I came here for the oversized Spanner. Then I came here for the random visits to the most accomplished artisans that you showcase.
Then I realised that I actually came here for your (and John’s) most entertaining dialogue as you guys attempt to fix broken s#!t 🤣.
Seriously though, I truly appreciate you sharing your passion 🙏

Hi Dom, I live in Huddersfield and my son is the parts manager at the Land Rover Centre, but I am thinking you got the parts via a different Land Rover Centre? There are probably lots up and down the country. Anyhow, you've gone and done it now to be sure. In my humble opinion, all Land Rovers, irrespective of model, are for people who really want one, love them to bits, and are not a bit bothered by how many times they break and how much it costs to fix them. At least you and John are a pretty capable team, so labour may not be an issue, but parts are just horrendously expensive for what they are. Some of the repair bills my son tells me about would make your eyes water, but people pay them because they love their vehicles.

Hi Dom, I was always taught when bleeding brakes, to start with the wheel furthest away from the master cylinder and work towards it. I also can remember when Land Rovers were well built, simple and reliable!

As a bike enthusiast, I would like to see you make a start on restoring one of the machines you already have. I enjoyed the Triumph build but would prefer to see a non-customised restoration, preferably the older bike rather than the A10, although I'm sure that it would be easier to get any parts needed for that one. I also know that you like a "well used" look, but I would like to see you try to do a full-on concours restoration. At the end of the day though, they are your machines and you are entitled to do with them what you will.
Another thought is that I have really enjoyed watching youtube videos about Cyclecarts. They look real fun and I'm sure that you and John could have a great time choosing a design and building one. Not too expensive, a super community of enthusiasts and a project that would ideally fit your combined skill sets. Making a body for a suitable Cyclecart would also enable you to practise some panel forming on your Ranalaghs.
    Best wishes.

Good tip, for any car; ABS pump is a mechanical device, needs to be used periodically. I always test it every few months by ramming the brakes on in a safe place, eg coming to a stop on a straight road expecting a pull to a left or right. Get the pump working so you know it works in a controlled environment, so,you know it works when you need it.

I also bought a 110 TDCi last September, it is the same age as your 90. So far the only issue has been a new Starter Motor that at was covered under warranty from the garage I bought it from. Good luck and enjoy, don’t forget to wave to other Defender drivers!

Very lucky on the ABS: I was working as Line Side Support Engineer at Tata Motors and, on occasion, got called to re-pair various modules (ABS, Instrument Cluster, Traction Battery and various driveline parts) and this required not only the Line Side commissioning tool but also knowledge of which byte in the main ECU to reset to allow pairing as the security system was setup to only allow pairing once, i.e., during initial vehicle build.

About 15-20 yrs ago, I went out to buy a 4x4. The plan was: a 110 Defender. In the late '90s, my wife was a professional user of 4x4s when she worked for NGOs in Afghanistan and Nigeria, driving around in (armoured) Troopies. She told me: "Yes buy one, but I only want a 4x4 with Land Cruiser on the bonnet on the driveway!" The only time she vetoed my car-buying adventures. And yes, there's a 20+ yr old lump of Japanese iron in the barn these days. Nearly 450k km without troubles...

I drove around on the edges of the Rub al Khali in a Land cruisers back in the early 80's. they were SWB straight 6 cylinder petrol 4.666 litre engines. Absolutely bullet proof vehicle, and as I was always driving on my own and map reading as well, miles from civilization and tarmac, in the height of the Saudi Arabian summers, the reliability of these Toyotas probably saved my life. The few land rovers that were on the fleet were always with issues, and even when mechanically reliable, suspension parts were wearing out and even breaking, being light weight in compassion to their Land Cruiser brethren.

My friend was a master butcher and explained to me that everything in a pig is used, except for the sqeak. That was until land rover used the squeak in the brakes! 😂😂😂
The abs will eventually suffer from corrosion, as the anti corrosion in the brake fluid fails to work over time. To avoid such issues you need to replace the brake fluid every two years.

My first ever car was a defender, but more rustic than yours Dom,as it was ex MID and a series 2a. Great job boys and I was looking at buying one of those brake bleeders but couldn't work out how they worked, so ya for showing me. Will get one now. Re the project, get back on the Porche😎. Thanks fellas

Hey Dom & John, Since you both specialize in the unique and occasionally obsolete technologies, maybe this ABS Pump is another opportunity ? Perhaps you might see about rebuilding the old one or upgrading to a more current pump from the LR parts catalog by modifying the pedal box that was compromising your fitment of replacement part ? At least figure out how you should have disassembled the module without damages to electrical components and see if there are seals that could be replaced to rebuild old unit as a spare or for resale to other afflicted LR Defender owners ?

Dom, congratulations for becoming a true English Gent, nothing against German stuff, (Don’t mention the war), but Defenders are just the best 4x4xfar, it’s undeniable…I ❤ my 110 Wolf and it takes me everywhere and never fails me…well done sir.

Sorry dom but nothing like bleeding brakes the old fashion way I would say the "new" ABS system would get the code from the ECU...John is a awesome friend of yours brilliant video great video❤

That ABS unit should have come apart easier than that. The corrosion made your job harder and led to the breakage I expect. Probably not had a brake fluid flush for quite a few years leading to water absorption and then rust. I would expect the rest of your braking system is in a similar state!

Why, Dom? I mean, I understand the intangible lure of a Defender (I have a 200Tdi 110), so that isn't a great surprise, but you haven't given us any back story, and I don't remember any comments of 'needing a new car' in previous videos. Surely there was more to it than an impulse buy? At least you won't be short of material for your channel now!
(PS - now very glad I don't have ABS on mine!)

could be worth putting a new split pin on the steering rod.they get a lot of road spray and it sucks if the nut unscrews

It's taken me 8 years working almost every day to ALMOST finish my '64C. You should get back to yours. There's all sorts of parts you can work on (trakes, engine, transaxle) while waiting for body panels.

Defenders are 'dime a dozen'. Now, if you want 'rare', how about a 1983 Jeep Cherokee, like the one on my driveway. Rock solid mechanicals, same the bodywork is water soluble. my 'one day' project.
