That last point was soooo important. For the last 2 days I have been putting ice in their water trays. Today is going to be 103 degrees. Ice bottles it is!
I'm from jeddah Saudi Arabia, my couturnix quails are doing fine they don't pant or anything I always leave a fan blowing at the cage but I let them out a lot I only get them in the cage when it's sleepy time they have been doing good and laying eggs and playing and everything
@@thedouglaspodcast the fan broke after a while cuz it was old and they were panting and stuff until I got a new fan I think it was like 38C so yea very hot
I’ve been putting a small tray under the coop with water in it. It holds a couple gallons. As the water evaporates it cools the coop down. It’ll actually drop the inside temp of the coop by 6-7 degrees throughout the day.
I always feel so bad for my quail during the summer...currently 116. 🥵 I make sure to cover their cage from the am sun then once that moves they have 3 open sides with a fan blowing on them. Once it started getting over 110, I started putting out the frozen water bottles. I also add a kitty litter pan with dirt that I moisten that they love. They are still pant from sun up to sun down, poor babies.
There are two things you might consider: a homemade swamp cooler or ground cooling; both can be powered by solar. For the latter, look up "homemade air conditioner" on UA-cam for different designs, but I like the bucket method. Bury a 5gal bucket of water deep in the ground with a water pump. You'll run those lines up to copper tubing on a fan. Bend copper tubing in a spiral, and attach it to the front of a strong fan. Attach the underground tubing and turn on the pump. Cool water will pump up into the copper tubing, and then back down to the bucket. The fan blows the cold air. It takes a little more work, but much cheaper than the ice in a cooler method.
Alright haven't even watched the video and I must say I've been waiting for someone to cover this topic for a while now!!! I know I had 2 or 3 more questions I haven't seen anyone else cover but I can't think of them right now, if I do I will post them up!
I have always used fro zen water bottles for my animals. My gramma taught me that trick when I was about 6 years old and I got my first bunny. It works wonders for my chickens too. Thanks for all the good info as always!
The greenhouse fan should help them alot in a shed. They're under a lot of shade. I keep the doors open on dry hot days too. No predators in the day. But night, killer raccoons. Nothing like finding all dead. Must be a big group out there. Found one den. Cat poop isn't driving them off like groundhog holes. Not even strays. I do have solid ice packs too along with ones I wouldn't put in there as they're thinner plastic and would get pecked or clawed.
I've managed to breed gray/black corntix quails they throw an occasional dark brown/black and tuxedo but the tuxedos tend to be male. 7th generation from myshire hatching eggs originally.
Quick question, what about misting? By no means spraying or wetting, but what about a very light mist every once in a while. Will this help them or hurt them? Great video! Thank you
Misting would be fine. I don’t recommend it just because if you get them too wet then it could be dangerous. But if you have the ability to make it right for them then yes that is a great idea
Hi zack 😊 is there a way to properly candle jumbo wild eggs i go under a blanket and candle but i don’t seem to be able to see if there fertilised? Thank you
You said don’t give them ice cold water but what if they’re drinking the sweat of those cold water bottles wouldn’t that hurt them? I haven’t tried this but I assume they would start pecking the water of the bottle because when I clean the cages they peck at the water that’s dangling off the chicken wire mesh after I wash it off.
Reduce the light for the male only cage and as far away from the females sweet noises as you can. The more dominate males will go after the more passive males to breed with them. We aren't talking one male, we are talking 3, 4, 5, 6 males doing the deed.
Once mature, extras go to freezer camp. I lost a lot to pecking to death from the males when I first started due to too many males. I put one male to 5 or 6 females. I grow out the extras for freezer camp. Once mature is when they can get pretty brutal. Now I know the right ratio. Just my experience.

How hot is the hottest you’ve had your quail in? I think you’re the only one so far I can relate to 😭 it’s gonna be close to 115 in a week 😭

Ver good info for new and older homesteads!
Thank you

Sounds like you are doing everything to make them comfortable

Perfect timing! I almost gave them ice water, that would have been horrible.
Glad we could help.
I had no idea about the ice water 😳 very important info, thanks Zack!
Happy to help
Awesome info. I’m am doing everything you said except for the frozen water bottles. Never thought of that lol. Thank you
Glad to help
Great tips, I’ve got an old box fan on mine because they are not outside and they seem to be doing ok so far. Have a great day!
Great to hear
If you fill those bottles with SALTY water before putting it in the freezer overnight, it will stay frozen/cold for longer.
Good idea
Nice 👍
Thanks for watching
Top on hutch and Fans running during the day, 100+ degrees last few days doing ok so far

Good luck with the predators

No very easy and very inexpensive to start

Use a incubright candler. That is what we use. I have a video on it and you can get one on our website at www.myshirefarm.com
They taste 😢 good too
Absolutely

It is not cold and not enough to do anything.
@MyshireFarm do quail need grit like chickens do? to help grind up food? for what ever reason I cant find any answers to this.
No they do not
Hey Zach, my male quail won’t let me put my hand in his cage with his females. What do I do. Switch him out with another male?
I would. He is territorial
