This is all so foreign to me, I’m lost..... but I can’t stop watching! I’m fascinated by the rotary motor! Amazing knowledge and dedication. Inspiring to say the least. Mad props and kudos to you all!
I have been going through alot of family issues and ever since I met you, I don't feel like in watching a UA-cam videos I feel like I'm finally hanging out with my friend. Thank you so much.
Awesome video, so great how we can have a detailed view of how everything goes together with pretty much every step along the way! A great learning tool! Thanks Rob!
yeh but people who are thinking about giving it a go still need to have a good amount of engine building knowledge & experience, clearances etc are very important in a rotary engine, all the details matter you can't just throw it together & think it's going to work properly or at all, if you don't really know what you're doing there's a good chance that you will end up with a junk engine & rotaries are now far too rare to be mucking around with, though people who do know what they are doing & are willing to take their time with the build then in that case all good but please rookies these engines are too hard to find these days to ruin hey :)
you can install the side spring seal in any way. People install it with the tips pointing up only because it may provide support on the end of the seals, but I have installed it both ways and found no problems. The oil ring spring and the apex spring are the only two springs that must be installed correctly
Only Rob Dahm can make people watch a 45 minutes long video without music, meme-cuts or 10000$ camera equipment. It's almost like a collective therapy session... ^_^
*PRO TIP! Mount a can or some sort of container to your engine stand. Keep a set of bolts for every type of engine you work on in there and it also gives you a place to put the pin when out of use. 👍
I'm going to be pulling my 2 rotor out starting tomorrow, as I'm planning on painting my FD this summer. There's also wiring issues, the oil pan leaks... Looking forward to it!
You should try knolling before starting an engine rebuild. That way, you'll never forget parts. Before i learnt of this, i'd forget on average 2 3 parts, never once since i started that process. It's neat and somewhat therapeutic too.
Drill and tap a tiny hole in that bolt. Then u can put scothbrite in it and use a set screw to hole it. Makes a nice home made hole polisher. Make a new one for work every so often.
Note on the sanding. That metal table surface is not very flat. A cheap flat surface is a thick piece of glass. Another tool you should have is a 4" diameter grinding stone. It looks a lot like a hockey puck, one side is coarse one is fine. MSCdirect pn# 05108402 is a good example of what I am talking about.
I might be in the minority however I really enjoy these longer videos of building the engine or your other long video where you got the whole car ready for sema. I understand alot of people wanna see big horsepower and to be fair so do I but the engineering/assembly aspect is really interesting and I hope you do more of them.
Rob are you using an external mic on that GoPro it is that just raw from if. I have a hero 7 black and haven’t really tried out the audio that much but if it’s that good it’s impressive.
@@golfy808 yeh, many people including myself are wondering how a well built single rotor engine will go & sound like, Vargas brothers need to build a semi pp single rotor with a scalloped & lightened rotor so we can finally see & hear the mysterious & all mighty 1 dorito do it's thing hey :)
I'm really nervous about reusing that damaged rotor. And you should be able to get that spare rotor lightened to within one gram of the others. While you're at it, you should really get all of them lightened, will help the motor rev faster and higher.
I swear, the guy working on your rotors with you looks just like this guy from an old 1320 video from florida with a k20 swapped mr2, while they're talking about the setup on the car
Question (please roast if wrong) but wouldnt yall want to install the apex seals out of the engine to make sure they dont stick down and cause a massive plume when it runs? Ive never built a rotory so i dont truely know but i am curious somebody lmk. (I did see yall did bench build the rotors so im sure it was done but idk)

42 minutes of Daddy Dahm bringing back to life the all mighty 3 rotor? Sing me up for that! 😁
Rob: uploads
Me: ah yes the Dorito gods have provided some good pθrn.
I see what you did there with the Greek letter..
@LUCAS KELLY yes.
1 ROTOR TINY TURBO SMART CAR DO IIIIIT
Peter Schwankl agreed!! 💯😁😁
👌
Can 3 rotor parts function as one rotor? I think it might be missing some components vis-a-vis balance and all that.
aserta team boostes have been working on a single rotor speedster for a bit
Faster proms is making a turbo k24 smart car check it out!

Imagine what robs local cashier thinks when he walks in every two days and buys a new box of vasoline
Gotta kill time during quarantine somehow.
Vasoline makes a very poor personal lube...it is white grease! There are much better products in 2020, for sure.
I’m guessing the Red/purple lube you’re putting on the shaft during assembly is Grape Jelly?

Watched whole thing I now know the secrets of how to put together rotaries

That's a lie. No one knows how rotaries go together. There magical
6:48 that side seal spring is installed upside down.
If it is I would email scream or do whatever to let them know.
Yep you’re right wrong way
If it is installed upside down would the pressure from the spring not be the same? How can you tell?
If he’s done so many of them has he been doing it wrong all along I wonder?

I had to look this up. Knolling is basically a fancy way of saying lay out all the parts in order
Whaaaaaaat!
Isiah has a 3 rotor to build tooooo????!!! 👀👀👀👀
love the longer videos and the 3 rotor is always a plus
robert dahm, this is a 45 minute video. I'm gonna watch it all. Thanks for your hard work
That's going to be a great video for years to come nobody else takes the time to explain it while they're doing it can makes it look like One Big Mess
Very satisfying to watch with my morning coffee !
That heavy breathing around the 7:00 mark got me dead😂😂

Honestly I have learned so much about rotaries just from your videos. I can confidently speak better about them to anyone.
I'm amazed as to the amount of tiny bits in each rotor!

Killen it with the outro's as usual .
That's some good engine building pen!
Thanks guys 🤘
Highlight of my day, my motivation for my project car
You make it look so easy Rob
Ahaha i knew rob was gonna be reusing parts but this is extra ghetto, very 3-rotor style i like it
Can’t wait to see it running again 👍
love seeing rotary engine builds! Thank you
Watching someone build a rotary engine is really enjoyable! It's nothing like watching someone build a V8.
A Dahm upload to lighten my day 👍👍

11:19 the camera just down there! 🥶😂
Was there a gasket or a seal on the oil pump? I don’t think I saw one.
I’m guessing it wont take long to find out
Valentine it’s behind the front cover which has a seal. so I’d guess the oil pump doesn’t need a seal.
I just love the way you end your vids😂😂
Make sure your camshaft is degreed properly!
Ohh my day is made when Rob uploads. 🙂
think the first side seal spring went in wrong. isn't it spring tabs up so they dont get wedged under corner seals?
Man, 40 min movie? It feels like christmas !
HI ROB, VERY INTERESTING STUFF....HOW IS THE 3RD ROTOR TIMED?? 90 DEG FROM E-SHAFT?? WHY NOT SPLAYED ALL AT 120 DEG SO IDLES SMOOTHER AND EVEN??
Rob Dahm: I'm going to build a one rotor some day.
@TeamBoosted: I got you dawg

when i used to rebuild 12a engines the water jacket seals went into the rotor housings{the aluminum ones}.
Yeasss love these longer vlogs
Your builder installed the side seal springs upside down. The points should be up supporting the end of the seal, not the center of it.
Question (please roast if wrong) but wouldnt yall want to install the apex seals out of the engine to make sure they dont stick down and cause a massive plume when it runs? Man this T-Rex knows how to build rotors 🤪
Side steel springs are upside down will end up underneath the corner seals
What a sexy sight seeing a 20b getting assembled. ❤️😍
You need to get a tattoo of all the bolt torque specs on your left forearm, LOL!
Compression sounds good
Not recommended to loosen bolts with your torque wrench. Great video!
It's funny ASF just hearing Rob nose whistling for the first 25 mins of the video 😂😂😂
His nose was loading boost
Hahaha that was mostly Dave. He’s got surgery for it coming up soon. I spent tons of time editing out the sound frequency 😂😂😂 but it was unavoidable
First time I've seen a rotary build and looks fun.
I do have a question, I thought petroleum jelly dried out seals. Are these petroleum resistant?
12:47 Rob's new meaning to "fire crotch."
Rob is the man
Great vid Rob 👌🏾
At that point I got it. That Wankel engine is SO Complex to Build!
Respect.
More superb 3 rotor coverage just what is needed, the big question is will Rob sort out his rats nest of wiring in the 3 rotor and are the spiders all dead.
Who’s ever breathing like Dark Varder gives the video a real star wars feel
28 minutes of pure nose 👃🏾 whistling
Whats the point in deleting the oil metering pump? Do you prefer to run premix, or is there another reason?
Premix at all times. Using oil that’s meant to be combusted and that allows me to run synthetic without question
Gees the last five minutes of putting the motor together went through the seasons,, jumper on, jumper off, jumper on. 😂😂
Does flipping one or more of the rotors change anything will it have an affect
I was wondering why you weren't keeping very precise track of the parts in the other vid, didn't realize you have a magic guru on hand to put it back together. Sounds useful ;p
End of the world coming, but at least I can watch Rob Dahm.
Rob got me stressing out with that rare 20b crank on the edge of that messy plastic table lol
