We have a lot of third, fourth, and fifth generation Chinese where I grew up, who can't speak a word of Chinese. Same thing with the Vietnamese kids here. By about the third generation, not many of them can speak it. I worked with a guy name Mike Hernandez in Miami, and he got so tired of people hearing his name and trying to speak to him in Spanish, which he did not speak at all, being fifth generation Mexican, from Colorado. He used to say, "Uh, excuse me, there hasn't been a Hernandez in my family who could speak Spanish for fifty years."

What a compliment when we Americans learn and speak their first language flawlessly. The world, especially America, can learn so much from you both. I enrolled in a Spanish class in your honor and I appreciate the reminder of how powerful language can be. When I master Spanish, I will attempt three other languages and then maybe think about tackling Chinese. That is a long shot but would be totally amazing. Our world needs more people like you. when i was younger, there was no one except for my family that spoke cantonese. there weren’t many asian people in my hometown, since i grew up in louisiana, and most of them spoke mandarin, so my cantonese just began to decline since i started learning and getting better at speaking english, and my parents just slowly stopped speaking cantonese to me. my grandma only knows how to speak cantonese, but she moved away back to hong kong, and all my other relatives lived in california or moved back to hong kong. now, i can’t read or write any cantonese, but i can understand when other people say it to me, and my tones and pronunciation are absolute trash, but needless to say, ya’ll speaking mandarin and fuzhounese and cantonese just makes my heart so happy. lots of love!!

I’m not really fascinated by them speaking Chinese. They studied and learned it. The thing is, English is considered much more universal - particularly in business and among people from all over the world who are educated. I think what’s entertaining about these is when you see the reaction of the Chinese people getting a kick out of hearing Americans speaking such polished Chinese - and even being able to be flexible with various dialects. I get a kick out of watching them get a kick out of what they’re seeing and hearing. But... They need to start branching out into other stuff. After seeing a few of these the schtick gets old. They needs to stage arguments amongst each other and think of funny scenarios where it would become a more entertaining candid camera type of thing. Besides, half the residents of Chinatown must know who this guy is by now. It’s getting old quick.
honestly, his talent is unmatched, but it's the pure joy these people show after hearing someone converse with them in their own language, respectively, that makes his videos so popular.. one can only imagine the amount of disrespectful people they deal with on a daily basis

It's normal for Asian people to underestimate themselves, and it looks like they've (Jillian and Dave) gotten that habit of Asians underplaying their skills.
Way to go you two! As a fellow polyglot I know the amazing effort required to be not only linguistically, but also culturally strong. Your answers, "no, I am not," are just like we do in Japanese, where we are always deferential. Your humanity comes out when you make the personal sacrifice to share culture, language, food, and experiences with people from other cultural backgrounds. As a speaker of Japanese, French, Italian and two indigenous languages, I've seen the surprised faces, but also the kind recognition of how you share a tiny bit of their lives by spending the time to learn their languages, and particularly their regional dialects. My hat is off to the both of you.
@Pyramid Head Definition of Polyglot... If you can speak two languages, you're bilingual; three and you're trilingual. If you speak even more than three, you might be known as a polyglot. And if you're any of the above, you can also describe yourself as multilingual.Nov 15, 2019
cannot agree more! I'm Cantonese and watching these videos I can't help being teary-eyed with a smile on my face, just like those that you have interacted with. Especially in these times of heightened instances/awareness of Asian hate, I feel that the emotion is rooted in that this video exemplifies that we can all embrace and appreciate one another's cultures and backgrounds.

I’m pretty sure it’s a proven fact that those that are bilingual/know more than 1 language have been known to have shifts in personality when they speak another language that’s not their mother tongue. And I can kinda confirm this because I’m currently learning Japanese and when speaking idk I just feel different haha, more confident and happy lol
Maybe it’s the flex of knowing another language lmao

P. S I'm like that!

I am so in love with the two of you. You creep out of nowhere, "pretending" to be the typical American, and then BAM! Speak their language perfectly and surprise the hell out of them. Myraj B yeah but it's more weird because it's more common to see asians in america than white people in china

I am so jealous of their linguistic skills. Love to hear them speak Mandarin.
@Pyramid Head Definition of Polyglot...
I absolutely agree with you. Learning languages is not that easy. As a fluent speaker of English, Hindi, Bengali, Russian, Spanish, and Belarusian it took me a lot of practice and time to master these languages. Cheers to all multilingual.
