Andrew Rothman Exactly, these guys are using slow motion to its greatest potential where they are even syncing the voices of the video with the audio (No CGI). Where as we've got people like Imagine Dragons with their stuffed animal fight-to-the-death matches singing about being a badass in what we can assume is after a nuclear fallout.
Andrew Rothman Mutemath is close but OK Go still wins. Mutemath holds the current record for fastest production of a music video though, the video for their song "Blood Pressure" went from the start of planning to UA-cam in under 24 hours.
@Marco They WOULD have been "real" guitars in a shop, sold to a musician, and cared for lovingly, played for fun and for live performances, etc. Except, they have something wrong with them that couldn't be feasibly fixed. The wood was warped, or the grain structure wasn't right causing a crack or split. The varnish didn't come out right or something like that. They are real objects, but instead of going into a dumpster and eventually a landfill, they came to us in the form of entertainment...and then into a dumpster and eventually a landfill.
Notice that different parts of the video are at different speeds. So I think deciding exactly at which frames to slow down / speed up gives them some leeway, so they can get the pages right.
Also they had to synch the explosions of color in time with the song and the pages. I am certain that that shot was extremely difficult and took weeks of practice to get it spot on.
Yes, they toyed a little bit with the framerate, that's the advantage of using a high speed camera that maybe shoots 10.000 fps. Anyway this is technically insane to film, but the editing was probably really fun. To match each explosion to a beat is really pleasing.
He mentioned that they have a spreadsheet of every single frame of the music video that corresponds to a millisecond of the actual video. Via this method they were able to ensure that each part of the video was synched perfectly.
Wow, I didn't realize how much involvement Damian and the rest of the band have in designing these videos. That's insane commitment. I have huge respect and awe for that.
Morton's Salt is a company that makes and sells salt, and they don't *have* a bloody message other than *BUY OUR SALT.* But I'm glad they're willing to spend their salt bucks behind the creation of something so amazing. Well done, Morton's Salt! They've clearly got the saltiest salt, and we all should buy it.
Did you actually check out the link in the mv) or watch this video carefully? They're supporting five different non-profit organizations with OK Go's help.
I didn't click the link, but it doesn't really matter. Companies don't support charities or non-profits for the pure altruism it represents. Through doing good they are in fact pulling off a positive public-relations campaign, designed to bolster the company's image to potential customers. "Oh", you're supposed to say, "I heard that Morton's Salt donated money to the homeless or whatever! We should totally buy their salt because they are clearly good people at heart." No. They're a company with the goal of making a profit, and spending some of their revenue on good PR usually results in increased sales. It's all a marketing stunt, with the benefit of maybe-actually doing some actual social good. I guess everybody wins?
I'm not part of the company (Morton's Salt in this case)'s higher ups nor do I work for them so I don't claim to know what they're thinking. In some cases it might be a sincere wish to do good in return and in some cases it might , just as you said, be nothing more than a marketing stunt (I'm not going to deny that). Then again I think for a lot of companies it might be both - might as well kill two birds with one stone? If it's also going to benefit everyone, why not then! Having said that, I do think they took the time to pick the individuals/organizations they wanted to bring attention to. It's nice that they didn't take the easy option and just randomly pick a huge famous charitable organization that everyone could've instantly recognize.
I agree... without any knowledge of who they are, only the organizations they picked, I'd argue that it's a bit of both. Also, my parents already buy Morton, and by choosing these charities, working with ok go, and simply doing a pr stunt so creatively... I'm going to keep the "tradition" going.
I love how forward thinking and smart they are. Obviously the music and videos are incredible and unique, but how forward thinking they are always seem to catch me off guard. As well all can see they use a ton of different props in their videos, and use them in very unique ways. The guitars being blown up, my first thought was, "That kind of sucks and what a waste". I just thought how much more beneficial they would have been if they were donated to a music school or something, rather than being destroyed. Had I never watched the video my thoughts would have remained the same, and I'm sure I wasn't alone in my first reaction. They were smart enough to know that was going to be an issue. So they contacted the manufacturer and asked for defects that would have been scrapped anyway. Same goes for the Obsession video. All the paper that was used in the video was not only recycled, but recycled for a profit in which they donated to a green charity. It's just so amazing! I really don't think I would have been able to think that far ahead and make sure it was covered.
I'd watch an entire documentary of the making of each video, with all the technical problems that each team had to solve. I hope you guys have a lot of raw material about how this was done and launch a documentary in any streaming platform!
To be very honest, this was a song that I had a strong emotional response to. There are so many opportunities that I could have missed if I let the moment pass. Knowing when you're in a life changing moment is the hardest part. Thank you so much for the song and the purpose of the Thirst Project. I deeply applaud everyone who is working to get clean water to those so desperately in need. Thank you, so very much.
So awesome to see the BTS!! Great direction, it takes a really strong vision to pull something off that's this precise. Awesome to see a bit of the process
Thank you for your super great videos. Keep the educational/behind the scenes versions coming. I am using this video and the One Math video in my 5th grade advanced math class to work on whole numbers and multiplying fractions. Thanks for continuing to make great content.
I read about a teacher who once said (I'm paraphrasing) that teaching his students was like dropping pennies down a well...and hoping to hear the "plop"...and every once in a while you hear a plop. Here's your's. I felt it.
Could you tell me when it would be the time that I won't be surprised by you guys anymore? Every single is getting better and better. I honestly love and enjoy watching your job. congrats for your new videoclip!
Breaking new creative ground with this Hi/Lo speed synchronized opus. Nice move Morton's. to sponsor this. Most people skip past commercials - not only are we watching, but we want to know even more
The spreadsheet is actually on there website, and you can find it here: okgo.net/2016/11/23/background-notes-and-full-credits-for-the-one-moment-video/
They would if they could but it is impossible to run round the set in that speed and get on a wire harness, and also the camera cant possibly turn that fast. It's still impressive to do what they did though
Phoenix 24 Oh yeah, no doubt still impressive... To some extent even more so that you can't see the seams between the shots. Not sure how many shots they used but I can only really see 3 places that they could have joined without major work in the post production stage,
I think the only video I’m impressed by anywhere near as much as I’m impressed by Ok Go videos is the video for Sledgehammer by Peter Gabriel. And even then, that video doesn’t hold a candle to the level of commitment and precision Ok Go show with every video. Needing/Getting is completely insane in this sense.
I thought it'd been done all in one shot, sintead it's been done in chunks... Not complaining, though, cause the transistions are something the smoothest thing I've ever seen. Man, this video rocks so much
Damian: "What's gonna happen Tim? There's gonna be an explosion in your ear, and right at the same time, you need to yell, 'BYEOBEYADABE!', and it doesn't make any sense in the room." Fair enough. ^_^
They did the parts in separate takes, but they only shot each one once. It would be pretty much impossible to pull all that off in four seconds in one take.
Fun fact; a moment is an actual unit of time, described as ‘about 90 seconds’ so technically they could’ve fit more time into the slowdown…. Buuut this is more impressive, so eh :p
They did 62 takes - it cost 12 million - meanwhile children die of starvation because we feed plant crops to slave animals so the rich can eat dead bodies. I'm only joking - I think it was like 3 takes.
When it comes to the art of music videos, these guys are operating on a completely different level than the rest of the world.

Yessssss they do the absolute best music videos like you can watch them so many times and they’re stunning every time
I felt strangely better when he revealed that all of the guitars were defect guitars.
@Marco im not sure what that changes for you
@Marco they are still real guitars blowin up, right?
@Marco They WOULD have been "real" guitars in a shop, sold to a musician, and cared for lovingly, played for fun and for live performances, etc. Except, they have something wrong with them that couldn't be feasibly fixed. The wood was warped, or the grain structure wasn't right causing a crack or split. The varnish didn't come out right or something like that. They are real objects, but instead of going into a dumpster and eventually a landfill, they came to us in the form of entertainment...and then into a dumpster and eventually a landfill.
Same. And it's oddly satisfying that these defective guitars were still used in music...
When I see the singer talking in the recording studio he reminds me of a young Benedict Cumberbatch.
I THOUGHT I WAS THE ONLY ONE
Turns out he's actually one year older than Benedict Cumberbatch 😂
I was thinking Jesse Eisenberg
💯 ☂️
i love how involved they are in the making of their music videos rather than just getting other people to come up with ideas for them
Stilll can't believe you guys synched the fliping pages to the song.....
Notice that different parts of the video are at different speeds. So I think deciding exactly at which frames to slow down / speed up gives them some leeway, so they can get the pages right.
Or maybe they planned it out down to the frame ahead of time? Crazy spreadsheet featured here: ua-cam.com/video/DvElCxbimxc/v-deo.html
Also they had to synch the explosions of color in time with the song and the pages. I am certain that that shot was extremely difficult and took weeks of practice to get it spot on.

Dude-"salt bucks"! LOL
They have the most incredibly precise choreography and timing and they never fail to be anything other than breathtaking
Love how he had to somehow weave salt into the metaphor
2:26
"don't hit me yet, don't hit me yet, don't hit me yet"
Ouch. imagine cleaning all that up, about 100 times.
Never ever get tired of watching this band, OK Go creating videos....They are AMAZING!
I love how forward thinking and smart they are. Obviously the music and videos are incredible and unique, but how forward thinking they are always seem to catch me off guard. Rare to see a front man being so involved.
This is fantastic. I love everything that they've ever made. Thank you for this, OK Go.
I'd watch an entire documentary of the making of each video, with all the technical problems that each team had to solve. I hope you guys have a lot of raw material about how this was done and launch a documentary in any streaming platform!
Mark Roberts Motion Control is the best. Great choice for this project!
I love the OK Go videos. Nobody else does anything like this.
I did feel it, just like I feel it every time I watch it. And I've watched it hundreds of times!
How are you guys so mind-blowing
I like a musician that also knows about differentials and has excellent visual sense.
Thank you for bringing these videos to us, truly. You guys never fail to make me smile.
I can't find anyone who can top the creativity of these guys
This was my most listened to song of 2017 on spotify, great work guys!!
To be very honest, this was a song that I had a strong emotional response to. There are so many opportunities that I could have missed if I let the moment pass. 4:49 I totally felt it. Very awe inspiring, you guys. Thank you always
This is astounding! Shouldn't this video win some awards or something?
So awesome how much work they personally put into each video they do.
I love these guys so much!!! they r so creative!!!!
choco cat mlplover yeah, they're really creative and I love their videos. But they won't be remembered for their music, to say the least.
choco cat mlplover IKR ILOVE THEM❤️❤️❤️
So awesome to see the BTS!! Great direction, it takes a really strong vision to pull something off that's this precise. Awesome to see a bit of the process
Why did 30 people dislike the video..???? Everything was perfect!!!
So unbelievably amazing!!!
These guys are so inspirational
OK Go = brilliant visual/musical scientists
Yes, bts!!!! I always love hearing the thought process behind all your videos :)

well that was amazing. Great job to everyone involved!
Great video guys, love the passion.
Love the Energy!
Thank you for your super great videos. Keep the educational/behind the scenes versions coming. I am using this video and the One Math video in my 5th grade advanced math class to work on whole numbers and multiplying fractions. Thanks for continuing to make great content.
The message behind one take is so deep. Basically sums up my life.. Relatable af
I enjoyed the melody and the eye candy. I reacted to this! thanks for a good song.
this deserves a lot more likes and views
I always be a fan for yours creativity of film making and music so much entertaining for me... ure the best ^^
Amazing 😍
I felt it, bro! Amazing
I read about a teacher who once said (I'm paraphrasing) that teaching his students was like dropping pennies down a well...and hoping to hear the "plop"...and every once in a while you hear a plop.
Here's your's.

#Noguitarswerehurtduringthefilmingofthisvide
Nice try on the hashtag. What's a vide? :p Btw, guitars were hurt, they just weren't playable ones. They were defects. Fender supplied the guitars.
Most people skip past commercials - not only are we watching, but we want to know even more
Great Job!!!!
saying that you put so much work into this is easy...but actually putting in all that work...DAMN
I'd like to have that whole spreadsheet😉
The spreadsheet is actually on there website, and you can find it here: okgo.net/2016/11/23/background-notes-and-full-credits-for-the-one-moment-video/
OK GO are bunch of creative artists....
WOOT WOOOT yeahy AWESOMEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
respect
So it wasn't done in one take?

Yes. Some of the best examples of editing aren't perfections but covering up imperfections
It takes longer than one moment.
OK GO are joy makers
This is dedication, this is creativity, this is something called out of the box thinking , in short this is very opposite of 'Bollywood'
4:05 It's fun to see him try to sell Morton Salt as anything but selling salt
Why Morton salt? Idk what the theme that related to the sponsor is.
Mark B. It's a charity made by Morton
Actually FIVE charities supported by Morton:
www.mortonsalt.com/walkherwalk/
Very cool choices. Go there and read about them.
THE MOST UNDERRATED SALT CONPANY EVER
I think the only video I’m impressed by anywhere near as much as I’m impressed by Ok Go videos is the video for Sledgehammer by Peter Gabriel. And even then, that video doesn’t hold a candle to the level of commitment and precision Ok Go show with every video. Needing/Getting is completely insane in this sense.
I definitely felt something profound watching the video.

TIMS VOICE IS SO CUTE OH MY GOSHH
Damian: "What's gonna happen Tim? There's gonna be an explosion in your ear, and right at the same time, you need to yell, 'BYEOBEYADABE!', and it doesn't make any sense in the room."
Fair enough. ^_^
THE FUCKING BOSSES
I guess you could say the production team was worth its salt
damian is... so cool
Damn... the things ok go will do just to entertain
‘Wait, go again, I wasn’t recording’
Can we PLEASE do something like this in my art class??
1:05
Damn, andy really got old...
I thought their first names started with OK GO... so I was like oh Andy is only the guitarist... then I realised 😬😁
Hi ok go
I guess shoot at such a high frame rate then you can worry about how you speed up and slow down later to match the speed you want
3:40 wait I'm confused. Did you do the part in separate takes/recordings or are you just talking about some slowdown inbetween the parts?
Apparently they shot it in seven segments then stitched them together.
They did the parts in separate takes, but they only shot each one once. It would be pretty much impossible to pull all that off in four seconds in one take.
"Obyabdi obyabdi"
I only clicked cuz I saw shirtless Damien on the thumbnail
Way to praise your corporate sponsors!
And here I was thinking it was all done in a single take :/
Hey yeah I need 8 guitars please and thank you
Technically, 1 moment is equal to 90 seconds
It's a shame they don't work as hard on the musiic. ;-)
Ok those guitars were defects but what happened to the 200+ Gretsch's you used in Needing/Getting? My friend saved for *one* of those for 6 months
And they didn’t get the slow mo guys in?
3:39 those guitars.... sob
Fun fact; a moment is an actual unit of time, described as ‘about 90 seconds’ so technically they could’ve fit more time into the slowdown…. Buuut this is more impressive, so eh :p
how many takes do they have to do for all this?
They did 62 takes - it cost 12 million - meanwhile children die of starvation because we feed plant crops to slave animals so the rich can eat dead bodies.
I'm only joking - I think it was like 3 takes.
So the irony is that it's NOT one moment then?? LOL
VeganRevolution children in Africa could have eaten those 2 takes
OriLOK2 figuratively.
OriLOK2
holy fuck
why so emotional?
Do you guys have paint in every video you have?
Hey, paint is cool! But no. There is no paint in Last Leaf, White Knuckles, A Million Ways, or Obsession just to name a few.
Does it really count as a one take video if you record in sections?
😘 Hi
