I'm old enough to remember the new coke ordeal, and it tasted horrible. It was all sweet and no cola flavor. I can remember scouring grocery store shelves for crates of old coke to stock up on it, and huge piles of new coke boxes sitting in the middle of our grocery store isles.
This was why I drank Jolt Cola in College in 88! Their old marketing to college kids was "Good Luck on Finals" on post with skeleton holding a Jolt Cola at the computer screen! It was brilliant marking play!
My sister was doing this Pepsi Challenge thing back in the day. I did a blind taste - and preferred Coke. My sister said, around here people preferred Coke. She traveled over Finland and Pepsi Challenge favored Pepsi. But not much. Maybe 55/45. She asked me why I chose Coke. I said Pepsi was "too sweet." Simply put, too much sugar. Now, sugar is addictive, and I don't remember if the New Coke ever reached here. It only lasted for 2+ months. But there was rebranding not long ago with Stranger Things. Somebody on UA-cam went down the memory lane with the new New Coke - and hated it. Said it was sugary water or something to that effect. So, if people preferred less cola flavor and more sweetness in the recipe, then an argument of New Coke might fly. But for me it was the sugar in Pepsi that turned it down, at least for me. Now, looking back, one can only be glad that the New Coke failed. Less sugar, less obesity and related issues. Now Coke flirts with no sugar. Why not expand and add Coke DM2? Also, Coke recovered. Bud Light. I doubt it. What's the psychopathy behind that? The ESG cult is more important than the customers?
in Australia, Coca-Cola is still widely referred to as Coca-Cola Classic, and the word "Classic" is indeed printed on the cans and bottles and soda fountain labels. This is a nod to the brand's rich history and heritage, as well as a way to differentiate the original formula from other variants like Diet Coke, Coke Zero, and others. It's interesting to note that while Coca-Cola has phased out the "Classic" label in some markets, it's still retained in others, like Australia, where the brand has a strong following and a deep cultural connection. So, enjoy your Aussie Coca-Cola Classic, and appreciate the nod to the brand's iconic legacy!
Coke had switched to corn syrup well before new coke came out, I think as early as 1979 in some places. New coke was just sweet, carbonated water with very little cola flavor. It was horrible.
It absolutely was the taste of New Coke that failed. Yes it was a bad product sorry not just not just nostalgia or brand loyalty trying to just chalk it up to those things is either revisionist history or a misinterpretation of it or both. The taste test that were ran were small samples little sips. If your they type of person that has a Coke with every meal palate fatigue would set in with New Coke for most people at some point. New Coke tasted like a flat Coke with extra sugar in it. New Coke was on the shelf for many years after the return of Coke Classic. So it had a chance it didn't sell, because it was a bad product. My family drunk Coke and Pepsi interchangeably according to which ever one was on sale. New Coke did not taste like Pepsi that's an insult Pepsi. We initially thought New Coke was good too, but the taste of it got old really fast.
Yup, New Coke was around for a while (until the early 2000s under various names). Goizueta was CEO until his death in the late 90s and there was a lot of affection for him in the company. That probably had a lot to do with keeping the formula around for a few more years after he passed then just dollars and cents.

The growing pains of switching from sugar to HFCS.

Lol that's brilliant! Wasn't Jolt the one with extra caffeine?
"all the sugar and twice the caffiene"
I didn't drink caffeine as a kid in the 80's I preferred lemon lime soda like Slice.

Love this! It really shows that as marketers we are rarely selling a product or service we are selling something deeper.
Glad you enjoyed it Monique! Coincidentally I listened to your excellent podcast about getting "perfect brand photos" today!
@@ChoiceHacking amazing!
So insightful. Yes, sometimes even the best of minds make disastrous decisions!
We can all make mistakes, that's true!
The whole thing was weird
I was one of the dozen people who actually liked New Coke.
this channel is so underrated
It's like The Producers. You can make more money with a Flop than with a Hit!
I will always upvote a Producers reference 😂
coke tastes horrible these days, idk what they did.
Very insightful. Thank you
Thanks Matome - glad you liked the video :)
All Coke did was change from sugar to corn sweetner....

@@mountedpatrolman Not so ... There was a major backlash from Coke wanting to change sweetners... You do not remove the #1 drink for no reason...
It just sucked. End of story.🤭
new coke proved that people wanted the original, oops change back! what is cokes market share after this failure??????????
