  • For this video, I did a deep, analytical dive into the modding scene for Bethesda Game Studios (Elder Scrolls, Fallout). It's a discussion about how it compares to modding communities from other games, and what sets Bethesda apart from the rest. I'm really proud of this video, and hope you all enjoy it.

    Something to add: Bethesda's games are enormously popular cultural events. Other devs don't carry IPs with the same wide recognition as Bethesda's. So not only does Bethesda have games easy to mod, they're also massively popular. If you want to try your hand at modding, tampering with Skyrim or a recent Fallout title is typically the best way to gain some recognition.

    Can you get mods that allow you to play Oblivion, in Skyrim?

    Interesting enough there are plenty games on Steam with vibrant modding communities, despite not having any modding history (even one-dev games like Rimworld). I think that as long as your game is popular enough and not completely disabled for modding, there will be people who will create mods for it.

      @@TheAtlasOne I feel like there are too few people appreciate Bethesda's role in the modding community, without their support we modders wouldn't have the big community we have right now.

    Wow you just change my lame attitude about Bethesda, Modding, and Modders. I also learned that Skyrim based on numbers alone on the mods made is the champion of Mods. Guess I have to stop claiming Bethesda makes lousy code and buggy games. And learn to mod myself? I have feared even using modes until the past few months. So much wasted time not learning.

    What was your reason for not considering Minecraft mods in your comparison?
    You create videos for UA-cam. You've obviously seen videos on UA-cam at some point showcasing some small part of what is possible in modded Minecraft.
    As a multiple-game mod developer and member of the /r/FeedTheBeast community, the glaring omission of possibly the largest modding community in gaming is super weird to me.

    • @TheAtlasOne
      @TheAtlasOne  6 років тому +4

      I did consider Minecraft. Ultimately, not every game I considered could be included in the video. I used XCOM 2 as my example of low accessibility/good community in place of Minecraft because I'm personally more knowledgeable when it comes to XCOM 2, and could articulate myself better using it as an example.
      An initial draft of this video had a short clip of Minecraft when discussing games with vibrant mod communities, but I felt it was better to show XCOM 2 in its place so it would later tie into the discussion about XCOM 2's SDK.
      But really, the biggest problem was that I didn't have any footage of modded Minecraft to use without lifting it from somebody else. I'm comfortable using promotional material like trailers in short spurts (see: Median XL, and the Bruma footage included with the video) but I try to avoid using random gameplay footage that doesn't belong to me. I'm always looking for new footage and contributions are always appreciated.

    This is one reason why Bethesda is one of the more respectable companies. I know people like to meme on them, but they arent the bad guys.

    What's your opinion then on the creation club or paid mods for fallout 4? I've heard its overpriced and underwhelming from most people, even from diehard fans of fallout and supporters of bethesda.

    • @TheAtlasOne
      @TheAtlasOne  6 років тому +2

      I have a negative opinion of paid mods as they were implemented in 2015, mostly revolving around the lack of QA, and the logistics of selling mods that aren't compatible with others.
      As far as the Creation Club goes, I think it's fine in theory (I'm acquainted with some of the people who make content for it, and they seem to be pretty happy about their involvement) but I don't think most of the content that's come through it has been worthwhile. I do like Survival Mode for Skyrim, and the houses are okay. I think it's all pretty overpriced, especially in comparison with similar official content (see: Gun Runners Arsenal for Fallout: New Vegas) for how little content each creation offers.

      @@TheAtlasOne hiding legendary edition to sell a version of the game with microtransactions that can break your game every update is wrong. Creation club is bs and not worth the money.

      @@SamahLama Playing it offline gets around that... all they give you then is an ad on your first loading screen or startup screen for their newest or latest content, and I've never been forced to buy anything. I think the folks at BGS and BethSoft can define and recognize outright theft when they see it, just as well as the rest of us can.
