A semi-important detail that you've gotten wrong: Heroes of the Storm's Loot Boxes weren't actually added to the game until April 2017, nearly a full year after Overwatch's release. This was almost certainly due to the popularity of Overwatch's boxes. Before that, skin unlocks were directly purchased with the currency you bought, although specific skins could only be earned by playing the game.
(This also extended to mounts and portraits, the other item types [announcers, sprays, banners, voice lines, and emojis] were all added with the loot boxes in order to pad out the item drops)
Interesting! I only played HOTS starting in 2017 and assumed they were in from the beginning. Thanks for the correction, I'll pin your message so it stays at the top and people can be informed of the flub. I will say that the spirit of the short HOTS segment was more just to show another example of Blizzard using RNG as both a design element and as a revenue stream, but I still goofed up with that bit.
Damn. This was one of the best video essays I've seen in a long time. Well done sir. Let me know if you need an editor, I'd love to cut content of this quality. Cheers!
I think most companies tried to copy the successful model of Magic The Gathering, where you buy a pack of cards and have a chance to get something really good worth thousands of dollars. It's sad that gaming has shifted towards this direction.
Modern gaming is gambling for people who are old enough to play video games...plain, and simple. It should be regulated like any other company that wants to build casinos, or it should be illegal. How the HELL is "Digital Las Vegas" even legal?
Patreon at 2k subs? I think you're overreaching a little here. While I did enjoy this video, it was insightful and entertaining, you have 2k subs and 9 videos on your channel - virtually noone knows you or how committed you are. Yet. Just my 2 cents, I think it's a little early.
100% respect that view. The magic of patreon is that it's purely voluntary and nobody has to (or should) support anybody that they don't want to support. For me, I am acquainted with a few other MUCH larger content creators who advised me to just put it up as early as possible just to save the hassle of doing it later, so I figured I'd just do it and let it sleep for a while. For now, I'm just content to make videos for fun.
