  • Planning road and transit networks on very hilly terrain | Adding a Rail Cargo and Depot
This is a lets play series on the River Delta map from the Cities Skylines 2 base game. The focus of the series is on creating a detailed, realistic looking county city build using slow and careful planning to create a number of towns/villages across the map.

It is kind of perplexing how they designed a set of assets that are so reliant on flat terrain, and then filled the game with maps that have almost no flat space. I’m still enjoying CS2 and I wish some of the more egregiously negative people would give it a rest, but it’s definitely got some frustrating elements. Another great build, thanks

(Weak) Counterargument: Row houses are perfect on hilly terrain. That's about it, though.

Exactly. I wouldn't mind building on steep terrain for a more dynamic and beautiful landscape but the game punishes me for it.

The only way I've seen polluted water disappear is to terraform the water away, wait a while, then terraform the water back in.
It's a fudge until the game mechanics get updated for water flow.

I like this where you show a way to plan ahead with the infrastructure before you make all the other planning and constructing.

I have two suggestions for a depression like the one you turned into a river, not for this build, no reason to undo all that work, but if you find topography like that in another build in the future.
The first suggestion could be to turn it into one long park, with roads bridging it. For inspiration see Valencia, Spain. They drained the section of the Turia river that ran through the center of the city and diverted it away to prevent flooding. They used the old river bed to create a new park and it is generally seen as a great positive for the city, creating green space for the population and preventing flooding of the city core. It is called Turia Gardens now.
The second suggestion would be, although I have no idea how much labor it would requite to make in CS2, to turn the old river bed into a series of lakes. For inspiration see The Lakes of Copenhagen. They used to be a stream arching around the old city limit and were over the centuries dammed up for milling and later on sectioned off further to entrench the citys fortifications. Today they are a loved park area and a large green area in the center of the city.

The part with you fighting with the round-about had me dying. The road tools are amazing, but they get wild if the terrain isn't flat. I'm done fighting with the cut/fill because it takes so long. Love the content, thank you

If you want a challenge, you could build suburbs on those mountains like they do in Wellington, New Zealand (outside the CBD). To go with the theme, you can have overhead power lines (if user made assets are in the game yet), having houses with no road access, only paths, having the way to the house behind is to walk right by the windows of the house in front, and really steep streets, and also very good bus servicing to make up for the fact that having a car is punished.

Wellington is actually where I've taken a lot of inspiration from for my modded CS1 series Solitude's downtown area! The hillside houses are so cool there, but would be near on impossible in CS2 right now unfortunately!

You should turn that forested area into sone sort of reserved forest/park area for now. So in future, you can turn into more of a built up park with DLC updates in future.

Many slopes were smoothed in the making of this episode 😂. Love the adjacent rail yard and cargo depot though do you need that big bridge from the rail yard or could you snake a road round the back of the cargo depot to join the yard to the road network?

Shame most of the buildings in this game all look the same and the only thing you can do to make things pretty is brushing the same 10 trees everywhere. Now with the creator assets packs delayed for 6+ months CS1 remains the superior and more pretty game. So happy you keep playing that one too. Cause I dropped CS2 already. You are a good inspiration for my lack of creativity :D
