Hello Melissa! I have a question! Do you think this routine is effective in controlling my acne? AM: -Salycilic Acid Cleanser -Neutrogena Hydroboost Gel Moisturizer -Hero Cosmetic 30 SPF Sunscreen PM: -PanOxyl 4% BP Cleanser -Differin Gel (used every other night) -Neutrogena Hydroboost Gel Moisturzer I have oily skin and most of my breakouts are around my jawline. I hope you can reply! And keep up the great content and advise!
Hey, I think that might be too much. AM: Salicylic Acid Cleanser or PanOxyl 4% BP Cleanser Neutrogena Hydroboost Gel Moisturizer Hero Cosmetic 30 SPF Sunscreen PM: Gentle Foaming Cleanser such as The Ordinary Squalane Cleanser or Beauty of Joseon Green Plum Cleanser (or one that I suggested in the video) Differin Gel (used every other night) Neutrogena Hydroboost Gel Moisturizer However, I never got my acne fully under control, although it improved dramatically while using these treatments. So, I'm not sure how it will be for you. It depends a lot on the root cause of it and what type it is, but I'm pretty confident that you will see some results! And you could also use the acne treatments only on the areas where you have breakouts. So when cleansing, you could use the PanOxyl cleanser only on these areas and then use the normal foaming cleanser over your entire face, or apply the Differin gel only on these areas, etc.
Hi I’m a year late haha! But I really want to try differin gel ! I have oily skin sometimes acne prone and dark spots ! Your routine looks good! :) However, keep in mind that if you struggle with acne to also investigate into the root causes of your acne, such as lack of sleep, stress or mental health issues, environmental factors (air & water quality, washing detergent, etc), or your diet (such as consuming too much added sugar, processed food, fast food, or any food intolerance; like soy, spices, milk, bread (wheat/gluten), eggs, chicken, etc). Your diet can really influence your skin! See here: www.youtube.com/@MelissaVanDijkOfficial/community

I recommend using Differin Gel in the evening and applying sunscreen during the daytime if you'll be exposed to a lot of sunlight or if you're working or spending time outdoors! :) However, it's fine to use your Differin Gel every other day instead of daily :)
@@MelissaVanDijkOfficial do i need to cleanse before i apply sunscreen? Or just apply it directly? Because I have a normal sunscreen, but I also have Cerave AM moisturizer, that is a moisturizer but also have a sunscreen in it.

Hello Robert, I agree with okxalex to some extent. For instance, I wash my neck daily because I wear sunscreen and makeup. However, my husband doesn't do the same as he doesn't use these treatments as frequently and does not apply sunscreen to his face regularly. In his case, plain water is often sufficient. Therefore, the need to wash one's face regularly really depends on individual needs and habits.
Hey Melissa! Quick off topic question, my current night time routine consists of the CeraVe Foaming Cleanser, Hyaluronic Acid, Niacinamide, Retinoid 2% Emulsion and Vitamin C Serum (Ascorbic Acid) all by The Ordinary, as well as Paula's Choice BHA liquid leave on exfoliant. I have acne prone and oily skin and a few hyperpigmentations. I now bought the glycolic acid toner from The Ordinary and thought about including it in my routine. Do you see any contradictions or potentially dangerous combinations here? Even if I were to include the toner? Would love some help! Love your videos!
I've touched on this in a previous response, but in general, I would recommend using Glycolic Acid, Retinoid, and BHA in separate routines, or even better, on different days. Here's a possible schedule: PM Routine: Clean your face with CeraVe Foaming Cleanser. Pat your face dry. Apply either BHA (Salicylic Acid), AHA (Glycolic Acid), or Granactive Retinoid. Essentially, you have three different evening routines. Wait a few minutes. If needed, apply a moisturizer like The Ordinary Natural Moisturizing Factors + Beta Glucan (their new formulation). AM Routine: Clean your face. Pat your face dry. Apply Hyaluronic Acid. Wait for 30-60 seconds. Apply either Niacinamide or a Vitamin C serum. Wait for another 30-60 seconds. Apply sunscreen. This is crucial if you'll be exposed to the sun, as many of the ingredients you're using can increase your skin's sensitivity to sunlight. Remember, there are many different options. This is just one possible regimen. Also, bear in mind that using these exfoliating acids and retinoids on alternate days could still be too much for your skin over time. In that case, you'll need to adjust the frequency again.
Yes, you can use Differin gel during summer, but it's crucial to protect your skin from the sun as Differin can increase sun sensitivity. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30, moisturize with a non-comedogenic product, avoid prolonged sun exposure, and gradually introduce Differin into your routine if you're new to it.
Hello Melissa, hope you're doing well :) I have noticed dark spots on my face from past acne, what serum is best to reduce appearance of these dark marks/spots?
Hello 🙃. Well, technically, they will disappear on their own, and the only thing you need to do is to protect them well from UV light so they fade faster. This means using a good sunscreen whenever you're exposed to the sun for prolonged periods would be key.
i’ve looked around on your page & couldn’t find anything. (maybe i didn’t look properly). but can i use the isntree hyalronic acid toner before adaplene gel? after? what’s recommended?

Hi melissa I have a question please answer me 🙏 So i have a brown skin (i’m sri lankan) so i have very very dark under eyes, eye lids. It’s very dark more than my skin tone. Please tell me some things for helps with this situation. Any thing (cream, serum, gel anything) please
Hello 🙃 Overall, I believe that using skincare products might not really fix dark circles under your eyes. Dark circles can be caused by many things. They can appear if you're not getting enough sleep, feeling stressed, eating badly, or drinking too much alcohol. As you get older, your skin can get thinner, making blood vessels easier to see and look like dark circles. Some people might get them because it runs in their family, they have allergies, they're not drinking enough water, or they're out in the sun too much. So, the best thing you can do is try to improve these things. If that doesn't work, you might need to see a doctor for some tests. That's the best advice I can give you.
Hey melissa, is this the right way to use or the best way for using gel deffrien and get all the benefits ? I’m using cleanser foaming gel from Cerave and moisturizer lotion from Cerave too
Yes, you can use it like that. Personally, I use it without a moisturizer, and I've found that applying it 3-4 times per week yields the same results without overly drying my skin or causing irritation. You need to determine what works best for you. While the products you're using are okay, make sure the moisturizing lotion suits your needs, as it can easily be too heavy. I've noticed that it might not pair well with Differin, especially for those with oily skin. However, for dry skin, it can be beneficial. For oily skin, a gel is typically the better choice.
@@MelissaVanDijkOfficial I appreciate your quick response, I didn't expect such a fast reply. I have combination skin, and I started using Differin two months ago for two weeks, but then I stopped because I felt like I was using the wrong products or they didn't suit my skin. But now I have started using it again and decided to gradually incorporate it into my routine by using it every other day, and after a week or two, I plan to use it daily. Is my approach correct? Also, before applying the Differin gel, I apply Vaseline under my eyes, around the nose, and mouth. Anyway, I am grateful for your advice. I plan to use Differin for a long period, maybe a year, to fully benefit from its effects, as I have been researching and reading about Differin during this time and found that it is the best option for me to achieve clear and problem-free skin.
It's been very quiet these days, and I was just around the corner... 🤪 Well, the company recommends a certain approach based on what many dermatologists or 'experts' suggest. They claim it offers the best results. However, my personal experience aligns with what I mentioned earlier: using it less often gave the same outcomes but without the side effects. My skin has almost completely cleared up over the past few months. Occasionally, I experience random flare-ups, which I believe might be related to my diet. Regarding the Vaseline method, caution is crucial. If you don't apply it carefully, avoiding certain areas or if you sweat heavily around the nose, the method might not be beneficial. The thing with retinol is that it affects the skin beyond the exact spot of application. So, if using it daily, it's vital to avoid certain areas and even the surrounding regions. Some individuals opt for an intensive application during the initial weeks. Even if they face extreme dryness or flaky skin, they persist, provided there's no unbearable burning or pain. After this initial phase, using the product three times a week seems optimal. The goal is to achieve accelerated skin cell turnover. This effect doesn't go away immediately but stays for a certain period. While the exact duration hasn't been extensively researched, I speculate it's between 1-3 days. Therefore, applying the product three times a week helps maintain this effect. At least, that's what has worked best for me. You can test it and find what works best for you, then see how it progresses. Experimenting is essential since we all approach this differently and have our own personal sensitivities.
Overall, yes. However, if it causes sensitivities, then it's best not to proceed. 😉 Since I'm not familiar with the exact formulation - and even if I were, it's challenging to predict since it also depends on your personal skin sensitivities - you essentially need to test it for yourself.
Hello ! Random question, which best cleanser would you recommend for oily and acne prone skin? Beauty of joseon green plum refreshing cleanser or the Cosrx salicylic acid cleanser? ,And when it comes to moisturizer, the boj red bean water gel or the cosrx birch sap moisturizer? thankyouu
Apart from the one suggested in the video, the 'Beauty of Joseon Green Plum Refreshing Cleanser' works quite well for me. I also find the 'Red Bean Water Gel' effective, but the 'The Ordinary Natural Moisturizing Factors + Beta Glucan' seems to perform slightly better on my skin. However, among the options you suggested, I would choose the 'Red Bean Water Gel'.

Great video! I was wondering if I needed to add the CeraVe Acne Foaming Cleanser (BP 4%) to this routine and how I would. I haven’t used both the differin and BP ingredients yet so i’m unsure how to make a routine or if I needed it. I’ve used SA cleanser and treatment which hasn’t worked at all on me. And should I introduce differin or the BP cleanser first to my routine. Thank you!
Hey again! 😊 Well, it would be best to start with one of them to see how your skin responds and it may already be enough for you. If you want to use both, introduce them to your skin one after the other to and observe how your skin responds. This way, you can easily determine the effects of each treatment or if it's the combination causing any issues. Once everything goes well and you want or need to use both, I recommend using your BP cleanser in the morning and a Gentle Foaming Cleanser and Differin Gel in the evening. Like so: ua-cam.com/video/oYe6LpdT0CY/v-deo.html - replace the Retinol with your Differin Gel.
@@MelissaVanDijkOfficial just watched the video! i was wondering why you didn’t recommend using moisturizers such as heavy ones but instead toners etc. as i was going to include it in my final routine which is: Morning: 1. Cetaphil Moisturizer (for all skin types) i’m loving your videos so much and their so helpful.
@@okxhieu First of all, people with acne-prone skin often have combination to oily skin. In that case, using a heavy moisturizer usually leads to more clogged pores because the skin doesn't need it. Instead, using a lightweight lotion or so-called gel-creams or just gel-type moisturizers should be enough to hydrate the skin. Alternatively, using a hydrating toner, essence, or serum can work just as well. Generally, choose something lightweight that absorbs easily into the skin. This way, it's also less likely to clog pores. Over time, I figured out that I prefer not to use a moisturizer along with Differin Gel - at least not creams. Therefore, I often suggest using a hydrating toner, essence, or serum instead. However, if you prefer to use a lightweight moisturizer instead of a toner, essence, or serum, that's fine. If dryness occurs, I just give my skin a break for a couple of days, and it's all good again. If using your Differin Gel (or any other treatment) causes too much dryness, just use it less often and give your skin some time to recover - as long as you're consistent with your treatment, you do not have to use it daily.
What do you mean by 'after you use a cleanser'? The Panoxyl wash is already a cleanser. Using this gel after can work, but I suggest applying a lightweight moisturizer afterward, as recommended in my video!
Clean your face with a non-exfoliating acid cleanser. Pat your skin dry. Apply a glycolic acid serum. Wait for 1-2 minutes to allow the serum to absorb. Apply snail mucin.
No, don't do that; it can cause sensitivities because the skin becomes too wet. Use the gel either on its own, as demonstrated in the video, or follow with a moisturizer if really needed.
Hi Melissa, I just wanted to know if it was fine to use Neutrogena hydroboost and then la roche posay eficlar duo plus after. I find that sometimes using efflicar duo alone, my skin has like white dust? Does this mean my skin is dry that's why eficlar duo isnt fully absorbing?
No, this is skincare pilling. So, what did you apply before this? Are there any serums that you use? Additionally, when exactly does the pilling occur? Do you apply the products to wet skin? 🤔 It's worth noting that there's often confusion between damp and wet skin. Some people mistakenly believe that hyaluronic acid is drying out their skin...

Hi, Melissa. Hope you're fine. I have a question. I was thinking of purchasing Paula's choice 2 bha liquid exfoliant. But I'm afraid of purging. I have previously used ordinary's aha BHA peeling solution for 2 months, but that was 2 years ago, and have used ordinary's lactic acid 5% one bottle last year, and recently have been using cosrx salicylic acid cleanser. So I was wondering, can my face be used to acids by using all of these? Or my face will still be considered as a beginner! My face recently started getting a little bit cleared up, I don't want any more acne or scars from purging. So, I am asking will Paula's choice BHA cause purging even if someone has already used some form of acids before? Cause it is too potent!
Hmm, well, it is possible that your skin has become more used to the acids, and therefore you may not experience purging. However, I think it most likely depends on the overall formulation and how often you use them. The best approach would be to slowly introduce it into your skincare routine, minimizing the risk dramatically as the skin has more time to adjust. This method worked best for me. Additionally, The Ordinary SA 2% solution or G&G SA works just as well and is more affordable, just saying ;) However, you should go with the one you prefer the most.
@@MelissaVanDijkOfficial Thanks Melissa for replying. Actually I would go for more affordable ones if I can as I'm still a student, and always on a budget. But I'm afraid if the ordinary one would cause burning or more purging! I'm actually very confused right one. Not able to decide that I need an exfoliant or not! I'm telling you skin condition, if you got time, do help me please. Last I've used an exfoliant, ordinary lactic acid 5. More than 1 year ago. Since than using cosrx salicylic acid cleanser. My skin has been fine, 2 or 3 puss filled whiteheads sometimes, which actually goes quickly. Two things- my face being dull, and the long time without exfoliating, these two things have been bothering me. My cerave lotion does absorb like it used to absorb 1 year ago, skin is normally oily during summer, and more importantly my skin sometimes feels greasy, do not know if it is because of summer or dehydration or for exfoliation. So I am really not understanding that I need to buy an exfoliant or my previous cleanser. If I do not use an exfoliant now, will my skin soon get problematic, as it would be a long time without exfoliation or would a bha cleanser work just fine?
@@Jakeikeuikeu I think what you're experiencing is completely normal. It's just how the skin behaves throughout the year, and there's no need to make any drastic changes. Skin doesn't always appear shiny; it can become dull due to factors like weather changes and environmental elements. However, you can try using a BHA cleanser with a lower pH, or even better, an AHA and BHA cleanser. Unfortunately, there aren't many high-quality options available on the market. Facetheory does offer a few formulations, such as the Facetheory Clarifying Cleanser C2, but availability may vary depending on your location. The higher pH of the Cosrx Cleanser doesn't contribute significantly to exfoliation. As an alternative, you could consider trying The Ordinary's Glycolic Acid or returning to their AHA and BHA masque occasionally to achieve a smooth finish if that's your preference. It's important not to overdo it with exfoliation, though. Instead, I would suggest focusing more on protecting your skin from the sun whenever you have sun exposure. This will show better long-term results for your skin.

Hey I use Differin gel In your opinion, which model of Serave cleanser is suitable? Serave Hydrating cleanser or serave foaming cleanser ? My skin is oily and deh rated
Are you using it for acne or for anti-aging benefits? If it's the latter, you could consider a hydrating cleanser, as that might work well. However, I'd generally advise against it otherwise. Some dermatologists often recommend using a hydrating cleanser, but this approach doesn't work for everyone, including me. Whenever I follow this advice, I end up with clogged pores, regardless of the product I use. Consequently, I've adjusted the example routines based on the skin type. So, if your skin is oily and prone to clogging, I would recommend a foaming cleanser, like the CeraVe Foaming Cleanser. However, personally, I prefer the Cetaphil Daily Facial Cleanser or the Beauty of Joseon Plum Cleanser.

Hey mellissa i have acne and wanted to start retinol So is it the right way to first try out adaplene for at least 3 months before moving to tretinoin... Because i wanted to treat my acne...
I think they are all more or less equally effective, so there is no need for tretinoin. Even with retinol, you can achieve the same results; the key is consistency while using it 2-3 times per week, for example, Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, which has worked best for me. However, the Differin gel formulation is superior; it absorbs so well into the skin and layers the best.
Hm... If it contains 2% Salicylic Acid or has a generally more drying formulation, I recommend not using it in the same routine. This can cause increased dryness and potentially lead to sensitivities.
Hey, i have hormonal acne, just a few on my chin and between the jawline to the cheek. If using it as spot treatment works well for you, keep on doing it like that! :) However, you may just want to use it whenever you experience acne, or use it consistently but only 3-4 times per week so that your skin has some time to recover. This works at least well for me, keeping in mind that I use it all over my face :)

Hi! How are you? Hope you are doing well. I have a question that is foaming facewash good for skin? Also nowadays there are some facewash brand that sells facewash with Silicon brush is it good using that brush everyday to wash face or any part of skin from our body? Or is it just a hype?
Foaming face washes are generally good for oily skin types as they can effectively remove excess oil. However, they might be too drying for dry or sensitive skin. Silicon brushes provide a gentle exfoliation and can be more hygienic than regular brushes, but should not be overused as they can potentially damage the skin's barrier. And not every trending product is necessary for a good skincare routine. 😉

@@MelissaVanDijkOfficial another thing i want to know that do we need any makeup remover any type of cleanser for removing sunscreen or can I remove this just using coconut or olive oil or just washing it with facewash?
@@MirrorFallacy Oil-based sunscreens and water-resistant formulations can be quite stubborn to remove. For these, you might want to consider an oil cleansing method. Coconut oil or olive oil can work well since oil attracts oil, thereby helping to lift the sunscreen from your skin. However, be aware that these oils may clog pores or cause breakouts. To mitigate this, I would suggest opting for a suitable oil or balm cleanser formulation, as suggested in the video. This could help to prevent or at least reduce the chances of breakouts. In addition, for everyday use, your regular water-based foaming cleanser should be quite effective in removing standard sunscreen and makeup.

Yes, however, the 'sandwich' method is somewhat nonsensical with these formulations and often causes more harm than good. It's typically reserved for very high strengths of retinoids like tretinoin, used when others are not available, to still maintain tolerability. Anyway, if you feel good about it and it works for you, then continue. However, if you fail to see any results after several weeks, it’s likely due to this approach.
Hi Melissa!! Super nice and informative video 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 I really love Differin, it's a great and super effective active... However in my country, we need a prescription from the dermatology to buy it 🤷🏻♀️ But it's sooo worthy 🤍🤍 Tysm and have a wonderful day 🥰💋
Hello again 🙃, Yes, it's the same in my home country. However, you could also just order it online from iherb.com, or have it shipped to a postal address in a different country, then forward it privately to your home address. I really think some laws, particularly those about medication, are incredibly outdated or, as I suspect, designed purely for the medical community's profit. There are certain products that should be available over the counter, especially in lower strengths, like 0.1%. I understand that higher strengths of these items, or products like tretinoin, are prescription-based, but it truly baffles me. We should really allow people more opportunities to explore their options independently. Anyway, thanks again for the lovely comment 🥰.
@@MelissaVanDijkOfficial I completely agree with you... Few days ago, I even watched a video from a local youtuber saying that, in 2 or 3 years forward, the regulations about over-the-counter retinol in my country will be even more restrictive. Not the tretinoin itself, just the "more accessible ones". They want to lower the actual dosages in the products that you can buy without prescription... And even nowadays I can't find "strong retinoids" easily because there's not a lot of products offered compared to other countries. I'm very disappointed 😥😥 Anyway, tysm for the amazing tips, maybe I should try it!! You're an angel ☺️ Take care 💋💋🤍🤍
@@Fany_ND Where are you from? Yes, there seems to be a tendency towards more regulation in the skincare industry. Yet, the main issue lies elsewhere. Instead of adding layers of regulation, there should be a more in-depth exploration of the skincare community and its concerns. Clear guidelines or formulation advice should be provided to companies, enabling consumers to use these products more effectively rather than having to navigate an increasingly regulated marketplace, which often doesn't make sense. For example, highly potent products, like Paula's Choice 1% Retinol, are readily available on the market. This product tends to be more irritating than Adapalene 0.1% or a low dose of Tretinoin, yet it remains over the counter. The situation doesn't quite add up. The industry could greatly benefit from comprehensive education and guidance for companies eager to participate. Establishing some kind of label system could be particularly beneficial. I've noticed that companies often name products based on marketing strategies, leading to customer confusion. This confusion can result in the incorrect combination of products, leading to skin irritation. Proper communication could easily prevent this issue. In any case, let's remain optimistic, hoping for changes that will make the industry better and safer.
@@MelissaVanDijkOfficial I'm from Spain. A big amount of the information provided for the beauty companies about their products is misleading. The example that you explain is super accurated. This companies should be more transparent and honest about their ingredients and procedures for our safety and the proper use of the formulas... But an attractive marketing and not a simple but trustworthy education of the consumer is more profitable 🤷🏻♀️ I don't know if some restrictions could be the answer... Hope that regulations will make any sense. Ty Melissa 🤍🤍
@@Fany_ND Ah, I see. Although I've never had the chance to explore mainland Spain, I've had some experiences on its smaller islands. When it comes to skincare companies, it appears that many of them might not be fully aware of what their formulations contain. This could be because they often rely on private labels, where the producing companies simply use a formula that already exists or slightly modify it for marketing reasons. I propose creating a special label or standard that skincare companies can earn if they follow certain rules. A major part of these rules involves educating customers about their products. By following these guidelines, a company can boost its credibility and encourage more transparency in the industry. As a result, customers would be better informed. However, this system would not work unless someone ensures that the rules are followed.
Hi i have a question since in a few days i will be starting my adapalene journey. Can you check my am and pm routine if you see potentially dangerous combinations here: AM 1. I am ready to face the purging process (I hope it won’t put me to that stage tho) Thank you so much
Hey! :) It's fine to use a Salicylic Acid Cleanser in the AM. However, you do not need to do the sandwich method with Adapalene. PM: Non-Exfoliating Acid Foaming Cleanser Calming Toner Adapalene (Optional) Moisturizer -> either your Hyaluronic Acid Gel or your Night Cream Also, do not apply your Hyaluronic Acid Gel to wet or misted skin. After cleansing, take a towel and pat all over the skin to remove the remaining water droplets from the skin surface, and then apply your Hyaluronic Acid Gel.
Well, it depends on the strength of your Azelaic Acid, Differin, and Tretinoin, as well as the Benzoyl Peroxide wash you want to use. Not all formulations are the same. For instance, I can use Differin Benzoyl Peroxide wash in the morning and Differin in the evening without any issues. However, Panoxyl, for example, causes me more dryness and irritation. Suppose you use the Differin BPO cleanser in the morning with Azelaic Acid and a hydrating SPF, you might be able to do so while using Differin or a low strength Tretinoin 0.05% in the evening. You really need to test this to see if it works.
Yes, but I recommend using the serum before applying Adapalene. Just make sure to let the serum absorb into the skin before applying Differin Gel on top :)

So, here's a simple regimen: First, clean the face. Ideally, use one of the suggested cleansers - a foaming cleanser works best. For instance, The Ordinary Squalane Cleanser, CeraVe Foaming Cleanser, Cetaphil Daily Facial Cleanser, or Beauty of Joseon Green Plum Cleanser would work. Next, pat your face dry. Then, apply a pea-sized amount of gel all over your face, avoiding the eyelids, corners of the eyes, and lips. If you follow up with a moisturizer, use a light gel such as The Ordinary Natural Moisturizing Factors + HA. This should keep your skin healthy and hydrated.
@@MelissaVanDijkOfficial ohh okay I understand much better now and btw when I do follow up with a moisturizer do I put the moisturizer after using the cleanser and then put pea sized of gel then let it dry and put the moisturizer again? I saw people do it that way and calling it the sandwich. And I’m so sorry for asking this much questions haha I’m just very curious so I don’t do it the wrong and mess my skin up. I appreciate you replying and helping me. Much love ma’am.❤️
Yes, that is misinformation they are spreading, or let's say, they do not understand why someone would choose that method. This is done for very high-strength prescription retinoid products, where the ingredient may be too potent initially, thus reducing the strength. However, it's not done for low-strength retinol or adapalene (Differin). So, you can follow the steps as I showed in the video.
I've been using it for a month and I haven't even seen any redness. Did I buy a fake product? But I must say to use a good moisturizer in the morning what is your opinion?
Well people react to medications differently, and it's possible that you may not experience any irritation or side effects from Differin. Some people just have more resilient or less sensitive skin.
@@mohdzain9271 Glass skin is so controversial. You can achieve it by exfoliating regularly and keeping the skin well-hydrated. However, keep in mind that genetics play a huge role in how someone's skin looks as well. Also, having pores and a bit of texture is normal too. Please do not blind yourself from social media with all those filters, makeup, and putting lots of serum or cream on the skin to make it look glowier... which may look pretty for the camera, but I'm pretty sure that it isn't comfortable to wear either 🙂 You can use salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide, retinol, or retinoids (like Differin Gel) to reduce acne and dark spots caused by acne. Retinol or Retinoids also offer anti-aging benefits.
The cetaphil daily facial cleanser is terrible for my sensitive skin, especially in combination with differin, it suddenly clogged my pores and made me red all over
I never had any issues, except for the initial uses when it made my skin a bit red. However, the more I used it, the better it became, and now it's one of my favorite cleansers, especially the fragrance-free version. May I ask which cleanser you are currently using along with Differin Gel?
@@MelissaVanDijkOfficial Hi Melissa, so I realized the cetaphil daily cleanser i was using had Sodium laureth sulfate in it which the newer formulations seem to be made without, i really think that’s what irritated my skin because a few days after I stopped using it I already saw improvements. Im using the La Roche purifying foaming cleanser now which seems to work better for my skin, especially in combination with differin. Any thoughts on this face wash?
@@Loveliess14 Hmm, I think you are confusing Sodium Laureth Sulfate with Sodium Lauryl Sulfate. The latter is the more questionable of the two, not the former, so that can't be the issue. Their names are indeed very similar, which often leads to confusion. Anyway, it could be something else in that formulation that you did not tolerate well. But I also like the La Roche Purifying Foaming Cleanser; I use it regularly and really enjoy it.
@@MelissaVanDijkOfficial Thanks Melissa! Do you have any advice about how to pinpoint what in that product caused the breakout if its not that ingredient?
@@Loveliess14 Pinpointing the exact ingredient causing a breakout can be challenging due to the multitude of ingredients in skincare products. Understanding common irritants and allergens may already be helpful. Still, allergy testing with a doctor would be the only definitive option if you want to figure it out. Otherwise, it's largely a process of guesswork. If you're very lucky, or if you try lots of products, you may find the one causing the issue. However, it could also be related to how the product is formulated, making the identification very difficult-almost impossible.
Hey Melissa do you think there is benefits to using adapelene after moisturizer dr dray says it’s good and doesn’t effect efficacy’s I have oily acne prone skin and tolerated to adapelene but scared of dryness
Generally, I can't see any benefits in doing this. In the beginning, I was misled by the circulating information online. The idea is usually to create a barrier so that the adapalene absorbs more slowly into the skin. However, for that, you also need the right moisturizer, one with fatty substances like shea butter, small amounts of petrolatum jelly, or certain oils. This will slow down absorption, but it might ultimately lead to clogged pores. Perhaps this won't be a problem if you're not prone to it, but if you're using it for acne, it will certainly clog pores 100%. Still, if you use the wrong moisturizer, which only contains humectants for hydrating ingredients, it could potentially have the opposite effect, leading to increased hydration and, therefore, more sensitivity, as the skin may be too "damp." So, in any case, it's going to affect the efficacy of adapalene, but the question is how much of the active ingredient the skin needs to be effective. From my experience, it's very low, and therefore it still should work, yes. From my experience, it works best when not using a moisturizer at all, while only using adapalene 3 times a week, or at most, 4 times, essentially giving it always a day in between to fully recover, same benefits, less irriation and sensitivties. PM Routine: Clean face Pat dry Wait a bit Apply adapalene PM2 Routine: Cleanse face Pat dry During the daytime, you just cleanse your face in the morning, and that's it. If you have prolonged sun exposure, then use your sunscreen; otherwise, just leave it alone. "Dryness/Flakes" are really not a big deal; it comes and goes, especially when the weather transitions. My solution for that is to just give it a couple of days or so in between, and cleansing during the days you not use it with a mild hydrating gel to foam cleanser as suggested in my routines. So far, this is working exceptionally well for me.
@@MelissaVanDijkOfficial okay I do 5 times adapelene and Saturday and Sunday are rest days I find I do every other day my acne comes back more often then compared to 5 times a day I have oily acne prone skin
@@ZanderKun_ That is also an option, but the issue could be related to something else you are doing on those days. Is your routine different when you're not using Differin gel? I mean, other than not using the gel itself, of course.

Did you document it, or do you just think that it was more? And for how long did you test using it every other day?
Yes, you can use it. If you are new to it, start with every other day so that your skin has enough time to adjust. However, completely getting rid of acne may not be the case, but you may see an improvement in the condition. At least, that's been my experience! :)

-Neutrogena Hydroboost Gel Moisturizer
-Hero Cosmetic 30 SPF Sunscreen
PM:
-PanOxyl 4% BP Cleanser
-Differin Gel (used every other night)
-Neutrogena Hydroboost Gel Moisturzer

I hope you can reply! And keep up the great content and advise!
Hey, I think that might be too much.
AM:
Salicylic Acid Cleanser or PanOxyl 4% BP Cleanser
Neutrogena Hydroboost Gel Moisturizer
Hero Cosmetic 30 SPF Sunscreen
PM:
Gentle Foaming Cleanser such as The Ordinary Squalane Cleanser or Beauty of Joseon Green Plum Cleanser (or one that I suggested in the video)
Differin Gel (used every other night)
Neutrogena Hydroboost Gel Moisturizer
However, I never got my acne fully under control, although it improved dramatically while using these treatments.

Hello Robert,
I agree with okxalex to some extent.

Here's a possible schedule:
PM Routine:
Clean your face with CeraVe Foaming Cleanser.
AM Routine:
Clean your face.
Hello Melissa, thanks for this video. Can I use differin during summer?
Yes, you can use Differin gel during summer, but it's crucial to protect your skin from the sun as Differin can increase sun sensitivity. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30, moisturize with a non-comedogenic product, avoid prolonged sun exposure, and gradually introduce Differin into your routine if you're new to it.
@@MelissaVanDijkOfficial thank you so much!
Hello Melissa, hope you're doing well :)
I have noticed dark spots on my face from past acne, what serum is best to reduce appearance of these dark marks/spots?
Hello 🙃. Well, technically, they will disappear on their own, and the only thing you need to do is to protect them well from UV light so they fade faster. This means using a good sunscreen whenever you're exposed to the sun for prolonged periods would be key.

So i have a brown skin (i’m sri lankan) so i have very very dark under eyes, eye lids. It’s very dark more than my skin tone. Please tell me some things for helps with this situation. Any thing (cream, serum, gel anything) please
Hello 🙃
Overall, I believe that using skincare products might not really fix dark circles under your eyes.
Well, the company recommends a certain approach based on what many dermatologists or 'experts' suggest.
Experimenting is essential since we all approach this differently and have our own personal sensitivities.
can I apply (vitamin E + alovera gel) home made moisturizer after applying differin gel???
Overall, yes. However, if it causes sensitivities, then it's best not to proceed. 😉 Since I'm not familiar with the exact formulation - and even if I were, it's challenging to predict since it also depends on your personal skin sensitivities - you essentially need to test it for yourself.

Well, it would be best to start with one of them to see how your skin responds and it may already be enough for you. If you want to use both, introduce them to your skin one after the other to and observe how your skin responds.

Hey mellissa i have acne and wanted to start retinol
So is it the right way to first try out adaplene for at least 3 months before moving to tretinoin...

If using it as spot treatment works well for you, keep on doing it like that! :) However, you may just want to use it whenever you experience acne, or use it consistently but only 3-4 times per week so that your skin has some time to recover.

Super nice and informative video 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
I really love Differin, it's a great and super effective active... However in my country, we need a prescription from the dermatology to buy it 🤷🏻♀️
But it's sooo worthy 🤍🤍
Tysm and have a wonderful day 🥰💋
Hello again 🙃,
Yes, it's the same in my home country.
I'm very disappointed 😥😥
Anyway, tysm for the amazing tips, maybe I should try it!! You're an angel ☺️

But an attractive marketing and not a simple but trustworthy education of the consumer is more profitable 🤷🏻♀️
I don't know if some restrictions could be the answer...

Hey Melissa, if I am using Azelaic acid in the am and different or tret pm, could I slip in bpo wash anywhere?

I believe that might not be a good idea. You can certainly skip the moisturizer as suggested in the video, but skipping the cleanser is not recommended. If you don't cleanse, impurities will remain on your skin, which could lead to more clogged pores.

@@keiji_codm You could wash your face with the shampoo if it's not overly drying! However, avoid using Vaseline Face & Body Lotion, as it is too thick and could cause more issues.

First, clean the face.

@@mohdzain9271 Glass skin is so controversial. You can achieve it by exfoliating regularly and keeping the skin well-hydrated. However, keep in mind that genetics play a huge role in how someone's skin looks as well. Also, having pores and a bit of texture is normal too. Please do not blind yourself from social media with all those filters, makeup, and putting lots of serum or cream on the skin to make it look glowier... which may look pretty for the camera, but I'm pretty sure that it isn't comfortable to wear either 🙂

@@Loveliess14 Hmm, I think you are confusing Sodium Laureth Sulfate with Sodium Lauryl Sulfate. The latter is the more questionable of the two, not the former, so that can't be the issue. Their names are indeed very similar, which often leads to confusion.

Still, if you use the wrong moisturizer, which only contains humectants for hydrating ingredients, it could potentially have the opposite effect, leading to increased hydration and, therefore, more sensitivity, as the skin may be too "damp."
So, in any case, it's going to affect the efficacy of adapalene, but the question is how much of the active ingredient the skin needs to be effective. From my experience, it's very low, and therefore it still should work, yes.
From my experience, it works best when not using a moisturizer at all, while only using adapalene 3 times a week, or at most, 4 times, essentially giving it always a day in between to fully recover, same benefits, less irriation and sensitivties.

During the daytime, you just cleanse your face in the morning, and that's it. If you have prolonged sun exposure, then use your sunscreen; otherwise, just leave it alone.
