- Many mysterious things happen in this passage. Jesus' temptation brings up the issue of how God could be tempted. It also raises the question of whether Jesus could sin or not. I grew up thinking Benny Hinn and the guys on tbn were our spiritual leaders of today. I wrongly assumed their message was Biblically consistent because tbn is considered a tv channel about God, they call themselves Christian and teach about the Bible. To this day, I’m still learning why what they teach is wrong. But I don’t think I gravitated towards prosperity gospel speakers mainly because I liked what they taught , but more so because of my lack of knowing that there was more to the Bible. I didn’t know their teaching was wrong and so I was easily susceptible in believing their take on the Bible. I wish Biblically sound preachers would have a greater platform than they do and I do believe many would then see how empty their messages are and how rich the real gospel is. This has been my personal experience.
I have a bit of a question as a new follower of Christ, the prosperity gospel is obviously corrupt but is it also corrupt to believe that God wants us to prosper financially once our spiritual lives are blessed?
I was the same way, brought up thinking tbn was a good channel and seeing these people speak with such an air of authority that I assumed they knew better. I was too young to see what I see clearly now, but I've also studied so much more of the Word. Thank goodness great teachers like Mike are at least out there for us to find a lot more easily than we could 20 years ago!

Not necessarily corrupt, but definitely an expectation that God just doesn’t promise us. Some believers will have earthly wealth while others won’t. We simply pray that those who have been blessed are generous and share with others as they are called to do. Ultimately though, our riches are in heaven and God’s priorities are not our own. He would rather you have your spiritual life together no matter what your financial situation is.
@@mechailreydon3784 well, as a general rule, yes God likes to make people prosper. But he also knows when to give that. In Proverbs, Agur asks God not to make him overly rich (nor poor) lest he deny Him.

Adam was sent out of the Garden of Eden and into the wilderness after succumbing to Satan's temptation.
Christ came and conquered Satan/temptation in the wilderness to open the way for Adam's descendants to get back into the Garden of Eden.

I've watched several of your Mark teachings, but just recently decided to begin at the beginning. I printed the Gospel of Mark, NASV, wide margin, and spiral bound it at the office supply store - now I've got lots of room for notes. Thanks Mike for all your great teachings. (Tickling ears - big problem in the church. I was one of them for a long time. Now, whenever I hear someone quote a scripture, I immediately want to read it in its context!)

I am watching this series for the first time a year after you posted it. This episode really helped me understand the temptation of Christ and how it relates to us as fallible humans. I love how you tied together the temptation of the first Adam in the garden and the FAILED temptation of the last Adam in even worse wilderness conditions. And loved it all. When Jesus said, "I am the true vine." the Pharisees knew exactly what Jesus was referring to: The True Vine prophesied to come in Ezekiel 17 and many other prophets said similar things.
That quote is going to stick with me.. I'm going to look for an opportunity to use it. "Don't give God a righteous reason to smack you down"

My interpretation of that verse has always been that Jesus wasn't tempted in the sense that he considered sinning. But that he was tempted in the sense that Satan attempted to entice Jesus or performed the act of temptation towards Jesus. For example, if a married man is approached by random women and she offers him to cheat with her, even if he doesn't consider it for a second technically the women "tempted" him. Just my opinion.

I am So grateful for this series. I'm amazed. Mark was my least favorite gospel and you've pointed out so much. But be careful about calling the devil names. Jude 1:9 But even the archangel Michael, when he was disputing with the devil about the body of Moses, did not himself dare to condemn him for slander but said, "The Lord rebuke you!"

Hi Mike. Love your ministry! Very sound thorough teaching. I do, however, want to point out something. The difference between the human nature of Jesus and our human nature is that His is not in a fallen state. In saying that, fear or the motive of self preservation is a by product of the sin nature/fallen human nature. For Jesus to fear also goes against the impeccability of Christ. The Gethsemane cup wasn't about the cross. It was about the crushing weight of humanity's sins being placed upon Jesus our scapegoat. "Take this cup" is Jesus expressing that the cup of wrath, the bitter dregs of death, was literally killing Him there in the garden. Hence, "My soul is exceedingly sorrowful even into death." No fear, just deep sorrowful anguish. Jesus could not sin and because of that He could not fear.
Interesting thought. But are you sure the motive foe self preservation is a product of sin nature? Cuz in the garden of Eden even before adam sinned, they ate of the fruits of the garden. So if this were the by product of sin nature it wouldn't make sense since they have not sinned yet.

@@BenjaminOommen Hi Ben. The difference between Jesus and Adam, before he sinned, is that even though both are human, only One has a divine nature. Sinless Adam still had the potential to sin since he was absent of the divine nature. Jesus was human, however he possessed a divine nature. Now, self preservation, in the sense of needing nourishment to survive, is different than self preservation when it involves a fight or flight situation. When implying that Jesus wanted to escape the cross out of fear would also have to imply that God has the capacity to fear. Also, fear wasn't introduced to Adam until he hid himself from God after he sinned.

15 Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.
Jesus had NO LUST in Him, therefore He could NOT be tempted (internally) or DRAWN to sin by LUST that was in Him - since there was no LUST in Him, thus Nothing that could "bring forth sin".
For example, someone could offer me an unlimited supply of Broccoli if I would "bow down and worship them" - since I have no LUST (inordinate desire) for Brocolli- I cannot thus be TEMPTED by it. If I can not be TEMPTED by it, have no Internal Inordinate Desire for Brocolli, then I can't be DRAWN to Sin (bowing down to worship Satan) by something I have no LUST for. Now "technically" I have been "tempted" but yet not DRAWN To Sin by the "temptation" - offer me something I REALLY Internally have a LUST (wrong desire) for and then I CAN be DRAWN AWAY To sin by this. BUT Christ had NO SUCH INTERNAL LUST for which He could be DRAW by.

“I will spend eternity..... not sinning, but I will still be human.” But will you though? Will we “still be human” throughout eternity? I ask because my bible says that we will be changed. That we were created, for a time, a little lower than the angels but will be raised above them. That we will see God as He is: for we shall be like Him. And so I ask, we we still be human at that point?
We are promised spirit bodies, the bible ends with us still on this earth, we are given immortal spirit bodies on earth.

I used to listen to Benny Hinn, Joel Osteen 😪 because they made Christianity sound quick and easy and magical. Growing in Christ developed delay gratification in me. That patience is the fruit of the Holy Spirit. Thank God for real Bible teachers like Swindoll, Dallas Willard and Mark Winger.

Satan attacks our flesh.
If we are crucified with Christ, he’s got no target.
If we do not study the word and keep it in our heart then we have no ability to fight evil.
We are always told that it is our ability to choose that proves that God doesn't want robots. Love requires Free Will. So of course, Jesus had the ability to choose. BUT He did not sin. He was tempted in every way that we are, yet He did not sin. If He could not sin, then how can He claim to understand us? I know this is not so.
I thought this is true and have for a long time. God was tempted and just as he gave us his righteousness he also imputes his victories over the devil to us. So we really have nothing to worry about now that we are saved.

So what's the purpose for Jesus to undergo temptation if He is not able to be tempted and sin?
This is my exact question. How am I to relate to Jesus if He cannot sin do to His nature but my nature is to sin? I wish someone could answer this.
As a teacher we would say I am going to tell what I am going to teach you, then tell you again what I have just taught you and then tell you again. This is because students don't listen and you need to repeat things to knock home the important things or principles you are trying to get over.

The reason i trust Pastor Mike is because he dosen't pretend to be better than the rest of us or superior. Him speaking about his silly and embarassing mistakes makes me believe that whatever he is putting out, he truly follows and believes it too.

In general I have enjoyed listening to your teachings because you agree with me. :) On this one I have to disagree. I believe in the peccability of Jesus. If Jesus could not have sinned then He could not have been tempted to sin. In the incarnation the second person of the Trinity "emptied Himself." He certainly did not stop being deity. But he did set aside the powers and other trappings of deity. He was limited to time and space. He did not have all knowledge. There were things He did not know. When He was an infant, He did not say "Mother, my swaddling clothes need to be changed." He cried like any normal child. He grew in favor with God and men. As for them beholding His glory, that was not the reaction of people, even the disciples. In fact there was nothing of Him that attracted men. Isa 53:2 "For He grew up before Him like a tender shoot, And like a root out of parched ground; He has no stately form or majesty That we should look upon Him, Nor appearance that we should be attracted to Him." The glory they spoke of was not something that all men saw or even something that they saw or understood until later. I believe that Jesus functioned and acted as a man, but a man who was submitted to the Holy Spirit. You mentioned yourself His prayer in the garden. He REALLY wanted this cup to pass. If He had to submit, then He didn't have to. If Jesus could not have sinned then He could not have been tempted and thus He cannot relate with our weak flesh. But of course we know He can relate. I certainly don't expect that you will ever come around to the correct understanding on this issue :) but it is not the most significant issue upon which Christians can disagree, and in those disagreements hold to the unity of the faith.
Very timely video/discussion (Glory to God). I had never heard of peccability/impeccability until today, but I had always assumed peccability based on my own reading of scripture. After reading this idea elsewhere, and researching today, it seems most people hold to impeccability. I am thankful for this information.

The escalation of the temptations of Jesus is interesting to consider. How many of us give up to temptation just for something our body wants - food, sex, drugs, emotions.
"Peccable" actually made immediate sense to me 'cause I speak Spanish! "Sin" is "pecado".
I was looking at the phraseology and noticed that Jesus was tempted versus satan tempted Jesus. If Jesus had not been tempted then we would not be able to overcome Revelations 3:21 because he is in us. Ephesians 3:17
What does it mean to be tempted "in every way just as we are"? Is it temptation to entice what is impossible? "The Son sinning against the Father makes no sense." but it's somehow tempting to do impossible things? I have never succumbed to the temptation to do the impossible. Every time Satan tempts me to do that which is not possible, somehow I make it through. It's the possible thing that I do. Am I as good as Jesus, who was only ever tempted to do that which was impossible for him to do? Did Jesus have free will?
"Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves." Philippians 2:3
Humbly serve others following the perfect example of Jesus. He said that He came not to be served but to serve others and give His life for others. (Matthew 20:28). Let us be humbled by the awesomeness and greatness of God and the unworthiness of ourselves. CS Lewis said that true humility is not thinking less of yourselves but rather thinking of yourself less. Let us look each day for opportunities to serve God and thus others, and be empowered by the Spirit to do these things glorifying God. Hopefully this impacted you positively today. God bless you!

I agree when you say that Satan doesn't personally tempt everyone. Its like you said he's not God he is a (lower case G) god. he's not omnipresent. he cant be everywhere at once so he has to have help to cause temptation. he uses schemes, just like a football coach uses to direct there players, to tempt us.
Hey there Pastor Mike! I am currently studying the letter of James and need help understanding Ch. 4: 11-12. I’m wanting to better understand the word “judge,” James uses and “the law.” Also how judging or speaking against a brother, speaks evil and judges the law? How do these correlate?

I completely understand your argument for why you believe Christ was unable to sin. It makes sense to me. But here's what I struggle with: what good is a sinless sacrifice if it wasn't even ABLE to sin? I always thought the significance of the sinless life and subsequent sacrifice of Jesus was that He was capable of sin but didn't do it. He was able to defeat the temptation that we non-God people wouldn't have been able to. I don't believe that makes him NOT God. I think it makes him more clearly human. The human nature could sin but the God nature is what prevented Him from doing so. Does that make sense? Id love to see an explanation of what I'm missing!
On the peccability vs impeccability thing ... I kind of feel like you do, it never even crossed my mind that Jesus was unable to sin as He was tempted. I'm probably wrong (and definitely so per Mike Winger) but it won't keep me up at night. Theology (or being a Christian) is not my wheelhouse and I'm glad Pr Mike has put out this series.
Could Jesus being tempted in the Wilderness, be similar to when God said to Satan, "Consider my servant Job"? Basically, God is saying, "Here is your chance Satan. I will allow you to tempt Jesus."

I’m a teacher in my church and your videos have instructed me a lot... I do have a question that may be in another video that u can point me to...how do you teach people that have there own interpretation of the Bible (aka prosperity thru giving or people relying on the good parts of Jesus but are they truly being transformed by the renewing of their mind?) that may be two subjects but your like a mentor to me...my wife and I are feeling the call to start a ministry and I really want us to be affective thru the power of God but not thru teaching that promises something God didn’t promise on this side of Heaven...any of your instruction is appreciated and needed and I thank you so much ahead of time...
I am not a pastor but I was one of the people you are describing for 17 years and I loved God and Jesus. God had to take me away from all my environments and place me in the wilderness with Him alone. During the transformation and renewing of my mind, I must say it was very very very painful Kgman2585, I kicked and screamed because I could not believe I was being lied to. Prior to this experience unknowingly I was introduce to teachings which you mentioned. I thank God for loving me enough to correct the Faith He had given me; I did not fully understand that I was off tract nor how I got off track. The process as I mentioned was very painful as I wrestled with God about what I knew and what I was taught. Please please pray hard before you dive into this area of trying to get people to see the truth for what it is. Make sure you are strong in Faith and in your relationship with God because so many emotions are going to rise from the people to the surface and you might not be able to handle them. I am happy now but during the 5 year process, there were lots of tears, frustration, doubts, anger, headaches, sleepless nights, loving God's word, not loving God's word, loving the church and the pastors and teachers to not loving them. So many emotions were involved but nonetheless I praise God for the Holy Spirit who is our number one Teacher who struggled with me until He established me and calmed me down so I could receive from Him. Now that I am on the other side of the process, I dislike pastors and leaders who lie to God's people for fame and to make a name for them self. We need truth which leads to freedom.

Your are absolutely correct my experience was similar bcs I was telling my wife I was only wanting to be broken in ways I could be broken and call it Gods doing...BIG SURPRISE it didn’t work that way...and now I know why...I started reading more and fasting for a better understanding of God’s word and it’s being pouring in to the point where it’s hard to teach where I am because a lot of people are still heart tied to that type of teaching...so when God opened our heart to start a ministry I could hear the Holy Spirit say your going to teach a lot of things my people are not going to like because they are not getting a true understanding of my words....like for example I have people in my church that love God but can’t get along with His people and I’m like if u have this powerful relationship with God and u can’t love others whom God loves how is that still God’s love? That was crazy to me..thank you for your words of experience and I appreciate you responding so much..thank you thank you..

I still need God's healing hand today and its been 5 years since the process took place. I hurt deeply and I hurt for those who have been deceived and those who are just lost. By looking at temptation externally as a carrot & a stick, Jesus’ chose the stick not the carrot. Man’s temptations are external choices as well. The difference is that lack of knowledge of God, His Word (Divine Teachings on History, Wisdom & Understanding of who God is & why we need bread & water to sustain our souls), His Son & why we need This Truth more than any other. If we knew what Jesus knew, if we had His understanding of Truth, many of us would choose the stick. Our lack of knowledge & understanding of fire, that we get burned.
God allows temptation. Christ was tested & overcame. We being in Him, are over-comers. He is strong. We are weak. With Him, we can do all things because He makes all things possible. “Be ready in season & out.” Amen
Mike, if He couldn't sin (not to be confused with the fact that He didn't sin) then how was He tempted in every way that we are? Again, just because He could was insignificant since He didn't sin.
there are ways in which he couldn't be tempted like us he couldn't be tempted to sin a sin again... because he never sinned in the first place.
God never had human failings except on the cross.
In my personal opinion, the temptation of christ is one of the most important event of the new testemant. It is where satan truely lost. As soon as Jesus refused to turn away from the father, that was it. Everything else from that point was set. No matter what satan tried, it played right into God's hand from that point on.

Pastor Mike. Can you do a sermon on if we should worship Jesus when we pray and so on? God incarnate into flesh but I’m not totally comfortable worshiping the physical form of Jesus. As an example, if god incarnate into a stone statue then we wouldn’t worship the statue so why do we incorporate Jesus into our prayers? Please clarify this for me as I’m really struggling with this. Thanks ❤
I think worshiping christ is very different than worshipping a stone statue. its not like when we worship christ we are worshipping a dead human body, we are worshipping the living God that came to us incarnate on earth. we are worshipping an aspect of our lord, not just a dead physical object.

I always kind of understood, from reading the Bible, that God can't be tempted toward evil because, as you've stated; there is no desire towards evil within God. However, when I read His ppl tempted or tested God in Exodus & when Satan tempts Jesus in the wilderness, I always took that to mean that, while God can't be tempted toward evil; anyone else (atheists, Satan) can still try to tempt Him. Of course it will always result in failure but free will dictates anyone can try tempting God, it's just futile.
Never really saw a contradiction between God not being able to be tempted, successfully, towards evil & Satan, or even His own ppl, trying to tempt God unsuccessfully..

I do agree with your conclusion tho. Tempting God to judge sin, by sinning more, because He is just & hates sin sounds absolutely biblical. I'm glad you spelled that out. It's amazing the little stuff you miss sometimes, even when you study scripture lol
BTW I'd love to know that CS Lewis reference! I love reading his work but I've never heard of that drowning analogy in regards to the fairness of Jesus not being capable of sinning due to His divine nature.
