Maybe when Qui Gon kneeled and meditated during his fight with Darth Maul he was preparing himself for the after life, just in case he got killed in the duel. Maybe he had discovered the possibility of becoming a force ghost during that period of his life. He had never seen any other jedi behaving like that during a duel.
The only other jedi to meditate during a duel was Ashoka in rebels when she fought the inquisitors to protect the younglings. She might have been doing the same thing.
"This will be a day long remembered. It has seen the end of Kenobi, it will soon see the end of the Rebellion." -Lord Vader to Tarkin aboard the doomed Death Star.
So is Obiwan's instantaneous disappearing a more advanced form of transitioning into a force ghost? Quigon went to the wills, but never completed the training. Yoda went to the wills and completed the training. Obiwan stayed to watch over Luke, so could only learn from force ghosts. No other force ghost vanished like Obiwan. He vanished before the strike. At least yoda vanished after his death. So if Obiwan vanished before the strike, he willed himself to die or transition. Is that some kind of advanced force power and how could Anakin master it in 2 minutes? Seems like a plot hole.
joethahobo it was real. He explained that he was only able to appear in mortis though, due to that being such a strong place in the Force. other times he can only be heard, and even then very sparingly.
joethahobo it's been confirmed Qui Gon never completed the training so he could only speak not appear before someone unless the place had a high concentration of the force, which coincidentally is exactly what Mortis is, so I believe it's real :)
I know this may or may not be canon. Ajunta Pall comes into mind. He if you so chose can become one with the force. He was seen as a type of force ghost, anchored by the dark side. But hey, I gave him some peace of mind and took his sword and gave it to Canderous.
Why at the end of rogue one when vader appeared in front of the rebels, he didn't use one force push to kill them all in instant, he was going to take the plans if he did that
I think you just answered that question: He would have already had the plans by the start of A New Hope, if he had wiped them all out in an instant. To add to that line of thinking; it serves to further illustrate the pleasure he takes in the infliction of terror and pain to those who stand in his way. An instant death would have been merciful.
GoDamnWeird What you are saying is true, but his mission was really important this time I don't think he would care about some rebels that he killed merciful because the cost is very high. You can tell that when you see vader going to deal with them himself
emir salimov you realize theyre movies, right? I understand trying to make it seem like it's real and retconning everything so it all fits together but there's a very simple answer for everything: the script... Do you really think it would be better if vader just force grabbed the plans? How would that in any way make sense leading in to ANH? It was a badass scene that served as a good conclusion/jumping off point
Topic's been done a lot. Short explanation: he was cautious and made sure not to overestimate his own power lest he end up like he did on Mustafar. Actual explanation: old movie and fragile props.
the Dark Side of the Force clouds so much of the future and closes the mind to a lot of what can be achieved through the Force, that it is not surprising that Vader doesn't understand what happened to Obi-wan.
Steve Schmehl In the book the life and legend of Obi-Wan Kenobi, after Vader died Obi-Wan transported his consciousness to the netherworld of the force and taught him how to be able to go back to the physical world.
It may have been intended that all Jedi become force ghosts when they die, but due to little fan boys that need to have every aspect of every thing in a make believe movie explained, it was retconned.
Actually, Vader DID know about Force Ghosts and how to become one. Otherwise he couldn't have done so in Episode VI. It's more likely that he was unaware that one could become a Force Ghost in the way that Obi-Wan did.
I have a question Bessy. Maybe you may have already answered it but, if Vader does not believe in force ghosts, how does become one at the end of Jedi. How long does a spirit have to become a force ghost because he doesn't turn back until he died, and didn't train to become a force ghost. Or was he training himself well being Vader.
zombiegamer234 in the ROTJ commentary lucas states that he had help from yoda and obi wan not the other side as well as having the perks of being the chosen one
This is really good, however one thing that I would refute is that Anakin began to believe in life after death after speaking to Yoda in the Clone Wars when Qui-Gon first contacted Yoda. When questioned about speaking to Qui-Gon on Mortis, Anakin replies with "...at least that what Obi-Wan believes." Hinting that Anakin MAY not believe the same as Obi-Wan. Yoda then says that everything they know about the Force says that one cannot retain their individuality after death, but questions about what they dont' know. Later, when Master Mundi says that it's impossible for one to retain their individuality after death, Anakin quotes Yoda about what they don't know about the Force. This doesn't prove that Anakin knew about becoming a Force ghost, but it does imply that he was opening up to the idea of life after death in the Force. Obviously he abandoned this idea when becoming Vader, but before Episode 3 during the Clone Wars, he was heading in that direction.
Vader (strikes Kenobi down): YOU ARE DED! NOT BIG SURPRISE! YEAAAAAAH! (Trolololo begins to sing in the background) Ben's ghost: Hello there! Vader: NOOOOOOOOOOOOO-OOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
due to the fact that it had been an extremely common thing for sith to live on as force ghosts the emperor would have been quite aware of it as would the Jedi especially since many Jedi had encountered force ghosts over the years both in legends and canon I.e. Yoda speaking with Darth Bane. Vader would most likely have been shocked because A. this took place in the first film so none of the rest of any of this existed or had been thought of yet so that's how it was scripted and you're reading too much into it or B. transcending the physical to remain as a "ghost" in the force was primarily a sith trait so seeing a Jedi accomplish it would have been a surprise to be sure and C. with the exception of Obi-Wan and Yoda when one dies and becomes a force ghost their body doesn't dissapeer in fact those are the only two examples of this I could find which is confusing especially since Anakin appears as a "ghost" at the end of "Jedi" without having had any training on how to do so or his body having dissapeared...
.....actually. If Im not mistaken. When Vader states "Obi Wan can no longer help him". Vader was referencing a fight with Luke when Obi Wan intervened and help Luke during the fight. This was also referenced by Obi Wan when trying to convince Luke to stay on Degobah. He told Luke "If you choose to face Vader, you will do so alone. I cannot interfere". Luke looked down and still decided to leave.
I don't think Vader assumed Obi Wan died when he disappeared. He knew by then that he had probably become one with the Force but I think as a fair bit of time had passed since then that he assumed he would never hear from Obi Wan again, therefore he did not think he had any ability to reveal himself to Luke or speak to him for example. Vader just said those things also to make Luke angry during their lightsaber duel.
Vader probably was more angry than surprised when Kenobi dissappeared because he wanted to see Kenobi's lifeless cauterized body for the satisfaction after what Kenobi did to him 30 years earlier turning Vader into a legless, armless char broiled freak
It's possible that Vader did know Obi Wan had become a Force Ghost (or figured it out later), and could have been lying to Luke and The Emperor (the former to make him lose hope, and the latter to encourage his Master that Luke had no outside help.).
I'm curious to this day and need it explained. Did Darth Vader actually have his saber physically slice Obi-wan Kenobi in half killing him. I find it unreal that Kenobi destroyed his own physical body to become one with the force. I believe Vader's saber indeed made contact with Kenobi's body severing and definatly killed him bcuz one has to physically die to become a force ghost I'd think. So if someone can tell me the real on this I'd much appreciate it bcuz in a quick sec in the scene as Vader swings into Obi-wan he kinda hunches forward then poof no body sliced in two below the shoulders. Just a sliced cloak and Kenobi's saber fall to the floor with Vader stepping on the cloak seemingly surprised...
Jeez this mythology stuff is fascinating yet is never explored in the movies. Thank heavens for the animated shows where all the interesting stuff goes down.
