I have a great love of steam engine drawn trains ! As a young boy in the early-mid 1950s I lived in a lane where at the bottom of which was a railway 'level crossing ! Us kids would wait high upon the footbridge awaiting the passing of the train beneath us when we would be engulfed in wonderful smoke & steam ! Sometimes we would be some distance up the lane when we heard the trains whistle as it approached the crossing ! We would all go tearing down to the crossing trying to beat the train ! Sitting here telling you this I swear I can smell that steam engine & also hear the excited cries of us kids against the roaring clatter as it passed beneath us ! Wonderful unique memories for me , plus I hope it gives at least an inkling of what real fun was like for us back then ? Thank you !
What a beautiful memory, Robert! It reminds me of one of my favourite books, The Railway Children. Steam trains are so evocative and I can see why you would have been so drawn to them as a child. That is what childhood should be about- trying to outrun the steam train! Take care 🌻🦋

@@themindfulnarrowboat Yes Vanessa, It had it's memorable moments too; like a stint as fireman on the footplate of '5593 Kolhapur'. Finding loose axle bolts on '4472 Flying Scotsman' whilst underneath, down in the Pit clearing the ash pan. Also, whilst I was inside the Firebox on School class Locomotive 'Repton' and chipping away at the Clinker stuck to the fire grate and liners, I became so 'Pumped Up' muscle wise, that I couldn't squeeze back out of the tiny doorway where the Fireman throws the coal into fire. I had to strip most of the clothes off my top half and was then un-ceremonious, arms above my head, dragged out by someone else. Talk about Claustrophobia, Phew!! 😱 Have a Lovely coming week , it's supposed to be fine. 🤞🤞

Hi Vanessa, Really enjoying your journal, I was watching one of your vlogs the other day where you mentioned that you were advised not to put out your dog hair for the birds !!!! because of the toxins for flea and Worm Treatment, and I felt I had to just say that those toxins are going into our beloved dogs too, I no longer do this to my dog, We put Pumpkin seeds slightly crushed into her food daily for worms, and like Your girl she swims a lot we are fortunate enough to have the river Hamble running through our garden, with regular brushing we do not and never have had a flea problem, I also Wash her bedding regularly, . Ive always had dogs and did what I thought was the right thing to do, And regularly got their boosters, Flea treatment ect, but then I heard about a lady who lost 3 dogs the cause of which she put down to vaccines, . so I decided to look further , and found adverse reactions form treatments were far more common than I realised, so now I do not put any toxins into my Dog, To check what immunity she has I Get a her tested at the vet , I think its called a titter test ????? I hope you wont think me rude Vanessa you and Zephyr clearly have wonderful relationship, but when it comes to animals I risk It, Please do some research, I put into google ," The dangers of animal vaccines, "Keep the Vlogs coming XXX

What a lovely surprise to see you on the Severn Railway chugging along admiring the beautiful views, so many places to stop off at but lack of time to explore them all. The old trains are a sight to see with their plume of white smoke rising in to the air, l remember many years ago going on trains and carriages like this with there musky smell of and also stale cigarettes how things have changed. Nice to see you on that train. That's a line I've never visited, but the seats looked very well maintained. A really interesting day... you sounded a bit like an excited school girl. I take it your reference to it being too risky was in relation to the flow of the river. Zephyr did not look that excited about the train - in fact he looked like he was having trouble keeping awake! I love to see the old buildings associated with the trains and river barges.

Fabulous vlog Vanessa. The train journey footage took me back in time to my childhood when we would go to the seaside by train and the train was individual carriages just like that one. I’m not quite old enough for steam trains though,😅 the carriages were pulled by a diesel engine. I still remember the velvet seats making the back of my bare legs itch! I don’t blame you for not risking the river, it did look very fast flowing. We’ve not been able to go out in our cabin cruiser this year yet because we have to go through part of the River Trent to get from our marina to the Trent and Mersey canal and it’s been in flood so not navigable in our little boat. Lovely wildlife shots as always,the mandarin ducks are so pretty. Take care you 3, lots of love. xxxxx

Hi Vanessa just 'ducked' 🤭🤭 in to see how you are going. That river Severne was flowing a tad rapidly for cruising..even the ducks had go 'doggie' paddle 🥴🥴 sorry couldnt resist. Those Mandarin ducks are so stately..elegant or magestic cant quite figure out which describes them best. Love steam trains could practically smell it from WA. I don't know much about marine wind turbines but there are a couple of house units currently making their way to boat use. They are a unit that looks like a house fan, and the other is a rectangular rotary unit. They both promise high efficiency at affordable prices. Thanks for the video. cheers 😀
Love the music. Zephyr is very sweet. Yes I love old cottages too but it depends on who lives next door. Doesn't matter if you live on a narrow boat. So good to see birds starting to make their nests. Spring is such a nice time if only it would really warm up. Lovely old steam train. It is quite a popular thing and lots of them around the UK.
It's always nice to see preserved steam engines and rail lines. I live not far from the Worth Valley Railway, famous for the Railway Children and Haworth, home of the Brontë sisters. I have travelled on all of the little railways of Wales, but not down country where you were. It looks like a lovely route. Had I not been a Firefighter for 30 years I would have loved to have been a steam engine train driver, but steam gave way to diesel electric, which is not the same. Thank you for a very interesting vlog and well done on that emergency stop under the canal bridge.

I came round a bend at the lazy otter on my old cruiser, a 60 foot narrow boat appeared at a heck of a rate, ran me into the trees, gut at the tiller had a go at ME! Fear not, he got short shrift in return
Beautiful Mandarin ducks! Such a treat to see them. What fun to ride the old trains too. Zephyr appeared to be lulled to sleep by the rocking of the train. That was lovely watching the swans build their nest. Lovely VLOG as always Vanessa. Swans are so elegant even in their nest building. I've navigated the Severn in a narrowboat but in the other direction from Worcester up to the basin. Very different experience to the canals. I remember Stourport Basin having the vibe of a seaside town. Have a great week!
Thoroughly enjoyed this one. Only recently found you on utube. Love the old trains, modern day trains will never compare to a good old train. This trip is definitely on my bucket list. Here in Australia we have The Ghan, get on in Adelaide SA and travel north throught central Australia to Darwin NT, (a beautiful trip), but not green and lush like your scenery. Must say, you diary of poems and drawings is fabulous, hope you are getting them published just as they are. Happy boating 💜💜

The Seven is a very tricky river to navigate - we were based in Gloucester docks - so take care, heed local advice and make sure you have enough engine power to manoeuvre when you are rushing into the locks at (seemingly) breakneck speed. Looking at today's current I would prepare for possibly a week's delay - it is not local rain but what is coming down from the Welsh hills that affect it. The trip as far as Tewkesbury is quite attractive although from there to Gloucester the high banks hide the view. South of Gloucester the Sharpness canal is inreresting with easy access to Slimbridge Wildfowl Trust.

A really interesting day... you sounded a bit like an excited school girl. I take it your reference to it being too risky was in relation to the flow of the river. Zephyr did not look that excited about the train - in fact he looked like he was having trouble keeping awake! I love to see the old buildings associated with the trains and river barges.

Fabulous vlog Vanessa. The train journey footage took me back in time to my childhood when we would go to the seaside by train and the train was individual carriages just like that one. I’m not quite old enough for steam trains though,😅 the carriages were pulled by a diesel engine. I still remember the velvet seats making the back of my bare legs itch! I don’t blame you for not risking the river, it did look very fast flowing. We’ve not been able to go out in our cabin cruiser this year yet because we have to go through part of the River Trent to get from our marina to the Trent and Mersey canal and it’s been in flood so not navigable in our little boat. Lovely wildlife shots as always,the mandarin ducks are so pretty. Take care you 3, lots of love. xxxxx

What a fun episode! In spite of Zephyr's seeming boredom with the whole thing, the train trip looked wonderful. Then there were the mandarin ducks. The loner shown around 8.57 looked as though he had escaped from someone's bathtub! 🥰🥰

I don't know much about marine wind turbines but there are a couple of house units currently making their way to boat use. They are a unit that looks like a house fan, and the other is a rectangular rotary unit. They both promise high efficiency at affordable prices. Thanks for the video. cheers 😀

Love the music. Zephyr is very sweet. Yes I love old cottages too but it depends on who lives next door. Doesn't matter if you live on a narrow boat. So good to see birds starting to make their nests. Spring is such a nice time if only it would really warm up. Lovely old steam train. It is quite a popular thing and lots of them around the UK.

It's always nice to see preserved steam engines and rail lines. I live not far from the Worth Valley Railway, famous for the Railway Children and Haworth, home of the Brontë sisters.
I have travelled on all of the little railways of Wales, but not down country where you were.
It looks like a lovely route.
Had I not been a Firefighter for 30 years I would have loved to have been a steam engine train driver, but steam gave way to diesel electric, which is not the same.

wow rhar brought back many memories as i used to volunteer on the SVR serving meals on the Servern Valley Venturer Sunday Junchtimes with many colleagues. I came round a bend at the lazy otter on my old cruiser, a 60 foot narrow boat appeared at a heck of a rate, ran me into the trees, gut at the tiller had a go at ME!

That was lovely watching the swans build their nest. Lovely VLOG as always Vanessa. Swans are so elegant even in their nest building. I've navigated the Severn in a narrowboat but in the other direction from Worcester up to the basin. Very different experience to the canals. I remember Stourport Basin having the vibe of a seaside town. Have a great week!

Thoroughly enjoyed this one. Only recently found you on utube. Love the old trains, modern day trains will never compare to a good old train. This trip is definitely on my bucket list. Here in Australia we have The Ghan, get on in Adelaide SA and travel north throught central Australia to Darwin NT, (a beautiful trip), but not green and lush like your scenery. Must say, you diary of poems and drawings is fabulous, hope you are getting them published just as they are. Happy boating 💜💜

The Seven is a very tricky river to navigate - we were based in Gloucester docks - so take care, heed local advice and make sure you have enough engine power to manoeuvre when you are rushing into the locks at (seemingly) breakneck speed. Looking at today's current I would prepare for possibly a week's delay - it is not local rain but what is coming down from the Welsh hills that affect it. The trip as far as Tewkesbury is quite attractive although from there to Gloucester the high banks hide the view. South of Gloucester the Sharpness canal is inreresting with easy access to Slimbridge Wildfowl Trust.
