Would be very cool to set up the mango leather project near mango plantations so that you could use the reject fruits that don't even make it to grocery stores. And less emissions from shipping.
They could also ship the pits to the people who make plastic replacement products

@@shadowsilverlight1651 Of course they will, however they decompose in far far shorter time and probably contain less toxic materials, as well as utilizing local waste which would otherwise go to landfills along with the stuff these products are replacing. Which means the amount going to the landfills also decrease. Overall it is a net positive.

I'm a knitter and crocheter, and if they made banana fiber into yarns, I'd happily use it. They've been making bamboo yarn, and coconut twine and rope for quite awhile, so I'd love to see it brought onto the market.

Im not sure about all of them but some were cut up because of qc and couldnt be sold.
@@Movod123 Well sure those are not to be sold anymore but it is as it always is - we throw away a lot of good food because the customer might not like it. Good if you can use it for something else but these looked like you could make juice or puree out of them. But maybe there is a good explanation for throwing them out...
I’m pretty sure they wouldn’t run a business hoping there are expired mangoes available. They are definitely buying into the fresh market as well.
@@pnkflyd66 That is what I think too... Once you have the machines available and the processes set up you have to run them - otherwise you lose money. And with AI and algorithms supermarkets and importers can minimize their waste. So if you can make a margin from selling the leather (bigger than just selling the mangos) this can very easily turn into a bigger problem than the one it was trying to combat.

It's all about profit. Plastic is still cheaper than the greener alternatives, so obviously they would choose plastic.

Those mangoes looked perfectly fine to me. Better than most I've seen in the produce aisles!
They said in the video, they use the ones that are cut open for quality control and once cut they can not sell them anymore ;)
Videos like this restore my faith in people, which is sorely needed at this time. We truly are amazing and we need to stop supporting big companies who do so much damage while making peeps poor while they profit hugely and start supporting the people who actually want to make the world better.
The Mango looks pretty fresh to me.
How much energy used in grinding, drying and transportation in all this. We all think it's a great idea till we find out that the additives are extremely toxic and all the energy used is comparable to raising cattle. If you're gonna do stories like this, show us everything.

India also subsidises the installation of the biogas technology at home. i have a small version of what is shown in the video at my home. We use both the fertilizer in our garden and the methane gas to cook with.

I love this documentary about food waste there’s so much of it and these people are putting it to good use we need more of that type of thinking. Especially in United States where I live there’s so much waste. And I mean that in general we’re probably the most wasteful country in the world.This is such a good thing more of this needs to happen especially where I live. The US needs to get involved to help eliminate food waste which there is a tremendous amount of it. This is an alternative that needs to be emphasize and brought to everybody’s attention how important is to make use of waste and make it productive which is a win-win for everyone.

The video says that those mangoes going to waste are cut open for quality control. I wouldn't expect the person doing quality control to eat everything he/she cuts open...

Well giving it free will create massive problems. However, its very costly to move around the food and who would want to bear the cost of it. Even they said it in the video.

In India those mangoes are sell and many people buy them because those mangoes are raw and not ready to eat. if you leave them for some time it can be eaten but making leather out of raw mango sounds like scam to me because most of the mangoes were raw.
it's cut for quality check.. so not for sale ... so the vegan leather people mangoes for free..

Animals are important for the environment and I can't help but wonder if we could turn some of this in to animal feed or natural fertilizers to put the nutrients back in to the earth rather then adding extra chemicals
I've heard that many meat eating climate vids are misleading and they don't take into account I guess agriculture waste being used as feed and other aspects. 🤷♀️

This is an excellent channel. If I had extra money, I would gladly donate it to such innovative folks. This sort of recycling is sooooo important for this planet, .... and the beneficiaries are not just our one species. In the bigger picture: MAKE LESS BABIES.

This stuff is really cool and interesting. I love the idea of finding uses for stuff that was previously thrown away.
It is kind of sad how people can be so amazed of such things. "Vegan" leather is made mixing some kind of epoxy plastic to bind the mush together then further processed by adding vinyl layer on top of it. Whats vegan about that? A plastic item that cant be recycled and will break into microplastics after having a way lower life cycle than real leather.

the majority was mango but i do understand the point. ideally they could use non-plastic additives which would make the product better overall.

Letting everyone know if you watched the past videos, it's basically a compilation of it, just saved you some time.
The sanitary pads are AMAZING!! Sometimes it really escapes me how many women there are in the world, and how much plastic their pads use, so if we can give them comfortable and biodegradable pads, it'd solve a lot! Especially in poorer countries where sanitary pads might cost more than they can afford

I use the avocado pit straws and give them as gifts/stocking stuffers as often as possible. People love them and think it's a wonderful idea but the price point stops them from buying them afterwards. If only they could support the industries NOW we'd see a drop in the prices but connecting the dots to make that happen seems to elude them.

And I will add all new purchases should be stuff like this where it can reduce waste (banana fiber seems like it fits a waste niche whereas mango leather still leaves the dilemna of what to do with the beef byproduct of hides). However there are huge treasure chambers of environmentally-negative purchases waiting at second-hand and thrift stores, also garage sales.
I have been going to garage sales and markets for years now. It is amazing how cheap you can get stuff. Even good quality stuff. I buy most stuff that way now.

This is a great idea!! BuTT don't be naive you will never replace animal leather, since if there are animals that die by any means...why would you want to waste that? No different than using the mangoes that would otherwise be wasted!

Some compounds to polymerize cellulose and fibers, plus might be some binders , and anti rotting agents etc

My country has a lot of biogas facilities but the problem is they mostly don't use waste, they grow corn only for that purpose and chop it up and i don't find it sustainable to take space from crops for eating and taking it to make gas, when you could use garden scraps from communities or local farmers and maybe restaurants and fast food chains in my region I'd say about 70 % (I'm only guessing here) of fields are used only for biogas production and that in my opinion defeats the purpose of being environmentally friendly and sustainable. I mean my town (3000 people including communities that are around us) we have 2 major biogas facilities...
We make synthetic rubber sheets for footwear industry from wastage polyethylene and single use plastic bags. More than 570 metric ton of plastic bags are recycled in a year in our facilities located in Dhaka, Bangladesh. We plan to recycle 2000 metric ton single use plastic bags next year.

For the avocados seeds... I think that’s very admirable.. and yet they still use plastic bags.... omg guys... you want actual people buying? And what are the other additives in them? Seaweed plastics might be better
A lot of resources are being put into single use items. First of all remove all food related single use plastics and their alternatives. We should switch to reusables. The only single use that requires alternatives is medical equipment. Everyone should focus on that.

We Indians used these natural things and were called backward then, were forced to use plastic and our natural practices were ridiculed, now they are doing the same and patenting them.
so waht is this protective coating? latex? that is being used already now for leather imitations. a thick - cloth - material base, coated with latex. looks like leather. Last though one season. and than develops cracks.
All they need to do is add bean puree to make the leather last longer if they are able to find a waste stock of beans I mean there beans I don't think it can be waste lol

If 2/3 of indian women currently use re-usable, washable pads, then I'm not convinced that transitioning them to use disposable pads instead is a good thing. That's an incredible amount of new waste, even if it does degrade. Most women in the west do use disposables already, so plant based biodegradables would be most welcome.
