I don’t think people appreciate how much of the DD sound is John Taylor. The first time I ever heard DD, the bass is what caught my ear. Those funky grooves, and in songs like Rio the speed and beauty, push them into awesomeness!!
John and Roger the True Force , behind DD , loving these vids John , playing my favourite DD tunes on Bass stronger then before Rio one of my fave patterns love the Syncapation keep the vids coming DD always and forever 💜💜💜🙏
Back in 1984 my senior year of high school my friends and I just love the reflex. That song was number one and I still listen to it today. Love this band Duran Duran ❤❤❤❤
My son, who plays guitar (not bass) just came downstairs. He is 15. He said "oh, John Taylor is doing another tutorial online, cool" and sat down to watch. He is a self taught player learning all he can about how music comes together and DD was one of the first bands he ever heard (before he was even born). He said "this guy is so cool", referring to John, to which I agreed and grinned. He's into all sorts of music (mostly Nirvana at the moment) but has a genuine 80's DD poster on his wall amongst others. He's up in his room strumming away now, so gorgeous. Thank you John :)
15 yr old? and appreciates John Taylor? That awesome. He's WAAYYYY ahead of the game. Good music will always live on in those on their musical journey and explorations.
I love his grin when he's clearly loving what he's playing. As a young girl in the 80's I loved him for being beautiful, but DAMN he's a good musician too!
And here I was a Black American girl who felt I had to justify my love of Duran Duran when this just really brings it home how much Black American culture and music was such a huge influence on John's evolution as a bass player and the entire core sound of Duran Duran. Full circle.
Music is amazing Faith, I think it transcends race. I grew up in the north of England listening to Public Enemy and older stuff like Curtis Mayfield and Sam Cooke. Their skin was a different color to mine and they were from a different culture, but their music spoke to me. It also sounded great.
Every time John smiles, I find myself smiling back -- love how from the 1st episode of this series he talked about his love of punk, funk and now, how "Original Sin," by Inxs brought them to Nile Rodgers and lifted "Reflex" to cool, jumpy and pulsating beat. Duranies Unite!
I love the way that John has a straight face through most of these videos, but as soon as he starts playing the smile lights up his face. Talk about doing something you love as a career...
I watched a video JT made, similar to this one, where he spoke of getting a juke box (loaded with old 45 rpm records) as a recent birthday gift. After the festivities were done he flipped on the thing and listened by himself. He spoke of the amazement he felt listening to each record and taking in all the bits and pieces (no pun intended [DC5]). He could scarcely take in each song -- then the next record would flop down and play and he'd be amazed all over again. He spent hours doing this! The mark of a true musician with real love for music. Makes me even more happy he managed to survive '80's superstardom.
I heard 'Melbourne' and nearly fell off my chair! It's astonishing this guy wasn't even 25 yet and he'd already created some of the best, most melodic bass lines on the 80s and beyond!!
and that he could even recall a city like Melbourne, my home town, given all the beautiful cities and places he would have visited. It must have been some party. Probably thrown by Molly Meldrum.
Go for it! That's how I started, similar era, different band, but I saw Level 42, and thought Boom! I want to play bass.... haven't put it down since. But John Taylor is great too, and very underrated, as Duran Duran had the teenybop tag in their early days, but have now been recognized as great musicians, and rightly so too.👍
He blows my mind. As much as I've always loved DD music and am now a bass player myself, I didn't know how much work John was doing. He was so young to come up with so many iconic parts!
these tutorials are priceless. Not just playing the song but teaching you a lil theory, syncopation, rhythms etc. You can tell how he truly loves music and playing!...Kudos to you JT!
It’s interesting to see all the detailed bass work John put into those songs. All those years I never knew just how much work went into those songs we all loved. Great Video.
I was 19 in 1983 and I embraced the look of Duran Duran. I was a fledgling bass player and also embraced the syncopated sound of JT's bass, always used those little finger octave sounds :-). Fantastic memories. Learned all the bass lines and the only one I struggled with was probably trying to play Planet Earth with fingers to the end!!!
I love hearing the bass isolated. I definitely hear Rick James' Super Freak bass inspiration in the Reflex. I know both songs and never picked up on the bass sound. I'm loving these videos. The process is fascinating! Can we just pay homage to John's sharp hair style and highlights in the Montserrat pic he showed!
Holy crap. I nearly cream my pants hearing that bass line. Takes me back to junior high. The Reflex is my favorite pop song, not only DD song, of all time. John's work is a huge part of that. I love you guys.. And I'm straight! No shame at all!
You are great, John, it's a privilege being able to watch you go through all these huge classics with great basslines, especially myself being a bass player
This is fascinating! There is nothing more blissful than watching a musician loving what they are doing. Keep having fun John, pure joy to see. Duran Duran, still my favourite band of all time.
In the 80's it was so damn difficult to have access to videos and magazines nas news about DD.And now we can easily see John Taylor and his bass guitar lessons 😅😁🥰🥰🥰...I'm daydreaming 😁😁😁😁😘😘😘😘😘💐💐💐💐💐💐💐💐
The tight rhythm section in DD is what made the sound...I just listening to JT's bass lines. Driven, groovy, funky and super-tight all at the same time. Having a thoughtful, conscientious, bass player build a a bass line as a foundation for the whole song impresses me WAY more than hearing a bass clinic on every track.
At the age of 14 I saw DD on MTV. It was the very first music video I had ever seen, and the video was ‘The Reflex’. The song was an auditory explosion to my senses and the video’s visuals fed the eyes, but it was your bass playing John that planted the musical seed that took root and spread throughout my adolescent brain. I wanted to play the bass, and I wanted to play just like you. That day, that song, and that video started me on a never ending musical voyage that has taken me from the bass to the drums, keyboards/piano, and guitar. I wouldn’t say I have mastered any of them, but I still get a rush of adrenaline when I get to play any of DD’s songs with my buddies. Thank you for the music, the inspiration and for taking the time to make these videos!
Honestly .....Super Freak?!?! One of my favorite songs Ever ; ) I will never listen to REFLEX the same way again . Love to John Taylor ; Really Brilliant music ! Much appreciation for this video .
loving the Bass masterclasses. it allows us to travel back to those decisive moments in the successful path of each song. these are real pearls of pop which will only enrich further the love for those songs and this unique band.
Another great installment of Stone Love Bass. Another awesome bass line, gives the girls something to shake their groove thing to, and brings respect from the bass payers. Thanks for the inspiration John!
This music video was shot at Toronto's Maple Leaf Gardens. I was there with my 'Toronto Rocks' T-shirt. They shot a couple takes. Bonus for Reflex fans. Met John and Andy when they came here with Power Station. That was a power band with the late great Chic drummer Tony Thompson and Mr. Robert Palmer.
My life changing moment was May 1984 when I saw The Reflex on TOTPS. I had just turned 14. From that day Duran Duran were my band and the bass was my instrument. Hearing JT talk about the bass line just takes me back 39 years. I saw them in Birmingham on my birthday 5th May last week and tomorrow I’m going to order myself a present - a JT signature bass from Dingwall.
Thank you again John! Thank you for making yourself and your creative process so accessible to fans. You are such a musical genius. One of the greatest bass players of all time. Please consider doing full-on lessons for those of us who are endeavoring to learn the bass. 😊
Loving these videos. The smile when he his playing makes my day. I remember listening to an acetate 7inch interview when he said his secret was he didn’t like playing bass. Load of rubbish John, you love it
I was just watching and I LOVE the way he enjoys and smiles as he plays. There is a section in 04:43 that thrills me because he stops playing for a second to start dancing a little and the he goes on playing, carried away by the the melody. Sooo coool. A truly gifted artist.
Wowww.. Always I Hug Duran Duran, since 80'. Full volume in my car. Hayarkon Street Tel Aviv. The most Beautiful Girls, The 80' Fashion, Kikar Dizingof, The Tape cassete... love this Video
It always seems a bit sudden when the video comes to an end, and I think that's because you're obviously having fun, and we're all having fun watching! Can we please get "Lonely in Your Nightmare" or "Nightboat" soon? Thanks so much!! 🥰
Duran duran is still hot 🔥 2023 as it was 1983. Was one of my favorite ❤ bands back 1983!!! Its genius was in how they always managed to deliver catchy music and words that just were fun and made you want to dance. They just knew how to do it over and over again. These men were/are low key musical global geniuses. legends.
I'm 50 years old and just now learning bass guitar; it's on my bucket list! I recently heard a cover of John Taylor from Duran Duran and went on a music kick, listening to all the songs I could find, listening for the bass and rhythm as in my older days I have even more of an appreciation of it. I was looking for tutorials but never thought of coming right to the source. And then I heard John Taylor's voice and had a momentary teenaged-freakout session of repeated OMG's that John Taylor is actually teaching people on video how to do his bass lines. Oh wow! There was literally maybe a square foot if you added all the blank spots together that were not covered by Duran Duran posters as a teen. This is wonderful! Thank you so much for making these videos! You, Paul McCartney, Maurice Gibbs,.... so many incredible memories and music from our youth!
Taylors bass lines were the driving force begind Duran Durans songs. You can hear his influences clearly in each track they did. Im 55yrs old and learning how to play bass. These tutorials are gems 👌🏾
OMG.. YOU are the reason that I play bass today. I decided in 1983 at 10 years old. I got my first bass in 1986 and have been playing ever since. Thank you
I'm a guitarplayer and I love the bass in Duran Duran. Man, how I would like to play with Duran Duran as a guitarist. The band from my youth. What beautiful memories !!!
Probably, the greatest rhythym section ever. John Taylor's the bloke who made me switch from six-strings to four. Technique will get you so far, but you can't teach what comes from the heart.
John you are fantastic!. I love DD since I was young in the 80´s. Fortunately I appreciatte the DD presentation here in Brazil in January, 1988. It was my 18th birthday and I will never forget that special day in my life. Your bass performance is one my music inspiration! I will be the DD fan forever!
Dearest John .. wow .. love The Reflex (which so many of us do of course). And, so love hearing/seeing the song structure and its origins. I really do love the entire Seven and The Ragged Tiger album. It is an album that I really love listening to from start to finish, and I guess the fact that it starts off so fantastic is probably one of the reasons. Also, for me, that album was the one where I officially became a Duranie. I starting falling in love with the band and the music when I bought a compilation tape (may have been one of those K Tel ones .. Star Tracks?!) I know it had Hungry Like the Wolf and Every Breath You Take by The Police and Straight From the Heart by Bryan Adams. Anyways, that's another story for another time .. LOL. So, I started my fandom around that time and so became acquainted with RIO (Save A Prayer and The Chauffeur are my faves). Such a fab album!! But, it is Seven and The Ragged Tiger is the album that made me fall totally in love with Duran Duran and the music - I guess because it was the band's most recent release at that time, and I think it is a banger of an album (The Seventh Stranger is EPIC). I love the journey that album takes me on when I listen to it from front to back. And, let's not even mention the cover .. it is such a great pin-up of the band, so for a 12 year old, there was no contest - BEST ALBUM COVER EVER!! I actually still have the big poster of this album cover in my home office. Finally, the fact that Nile Rodgers was brought into the fold (and to this day, I look at him as the 6th member of Duran Duran!!) is just the icing on the cake for this episode of Stone Love Bass Odyssey. Thanks for taking the time to do these .. as I said last week .. we are learning so much!! And, of course, you know we are all waiting in Room 7609 to hear you play that amazing bass line in Late Bar (yes, as I said before, I am relentless!!). Say 'hi' to the beautiful Gela and all the best to you both xxxx oooo
My very first concert ever. My father drove me and my sister from Upstate NY to Springfield Massachusetts during a terrible snowstorm in 1984. If I remember correctly, it was a Tuesday night and my father had to work the next morning. We got home around 6am. My sister and I have gone to every DD concert we could since then.....typically at SPAC in Saratoga NY and even The Palace Theatre in Albany NY. We grew up with this group and they helped shape our lives. My mother (78) was in the hair salon last summer when Hungry Like The Wolf came on the radio. Mom made a comment....something like “There’s Duran Duran“.... The entire salon got a kick out of her knowing the song. She explained that her two girls were huge fans! ❤️
"The Reflex" is one of the most unique sounding pop songs ever!
I don’t think people appreciate how much of the DD sound is John Taylor. The first time I ever heard DD, the bass is what caught my ear. Those funky grooves, and in songs like Rio the speed and beauty, push them into awesomeness!!
Absolutely! Totally agree with you.
Yes, the speed and beauty! It is truly amazing how many notes there are in John's part of that song.
John and Roger the True Force , behind DD , loving these vids John , playing my favourite DD tunes on Bass stronger then before Rio one of my fave patterns love the Syncapation keep the vids coming DD always and forever 💜💜💜🙏
I totally agree. We need to look beyond his good looks and appreciate his talent and the basis of Duran
It takes Andy's guitar to complete those super-cool funky grooves~ Cheers~
Back in 1984 my senior year of high school my friends and I just love the reflex. That song was number one and I still listen to it today. Love this band Duran Duran ❤❤❤❤

Good music transcends generations
Keep doing right my friend!!! That's good parenting! 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
Congratulations he sounds like 50% of gen z
pvoh
15 yr old? and appreciates John Taylor? That awesome. He's WAAYYYY ahead of the game. Good music will always live on in those on their musical journey and explorations.
And this, boys and girls, is why those of us who lived it, keep it going for future generations.
Saw them in concert September 9. John is the best bass player I've ever seen live
I love his grin when he's clearly loving what he's playing. As a young girl in the 80's I loved him for being beautiful, but DAMN he's a good musician too!

It all comes from the blues at the end of the day.
@@14rnr Black Americans' music, yes as already stated.
With love from the midlands Uk xxx Faith.
@Will McHale Oh, that's so cool! I used to have conversations with Nile on Twitter a few years ago about music and NYC nightclubs.

These are so good. A erudite musician who's completely honest about his influences and process - a very rare thing indeed!
Adam Steiner ...and he still has his own hair!
Hear hear. 👏👏👏👏
Points for erudite
And with a great memory, no more no less.
A musical genius, right here. C´mon, at 20 he was a self-made bass master already.
John Taylor. The reason I picked up, and the reason I put down, the bass. What an amazing player. One of my heroes.
This man is a genius.
I´m so happy JT is taking the time to make these vids!!!
Anyone else loving that fantastic Patrick Nagel art on the wall ?
Yeah, they should get that guy to do something like an album cover for them
I have several Nagel pieces and his coffee table book. Love his art!
Absolutely. I have the coffee table book, and a few of his prints as well. The Rio album cover introduced me to Patrick Nagel. Fantastic art!
Michael Hudson I do! Perfect sign of the time.
Luuk Willems Rio cover was designed by Nagel.
Fan of Duran Duran for decades. So cool to see John still enjoying and sharing his music to this day.

@@Alpha_7227 It Was! As noted by Molly Himself, on some radio show (just prior to his fall off the roof, I think; -ABCs In Conversations maybe?)
John, I've been a fan for nearly 40 years and Duran still never ceases to amaze me!
Yes: incredible band...The first 4 years of the 80s is difficult to describe listening to their music. Incredible buzz!
Exactamundo! Every single track they ever made ...
Same here--so many years later, and the love goes on!
Same here
For 40 years, he's been a part of my life.
These episodes get better every time. Incredible.
How drummers here like me just think John is one of the most infectious bass players of all time!
I'm going to buy a bass and start playing again like you made me want too back in the 80s
Hold my port....me too!!
I'm thinking the same 😊
Right! I want to play more bass now.
Go for it!
That's how I started, similar era, different band, but I saw Level 42, and thought Boom! I want to play bass.... haven't put it down since.
But John Taylor is great too, and very underrated, as Duran Duran had the teenybop tag in their early days, but have now been recognized as great musicians, and rightly so too.👍
Fudge Budge
I keep sharing these videos with my dad (73 yrs. old bass player) telling him
“All I want to do is learn bass after watching these videos”
He blows my mind. As much as I've always loved DD music and am now a bass player myself, I didn't know how much work John was doing. He was so young to come up with so many iconic parts!
these tutorials are priceless. Not just playing the song but teaching you a lil theory, syncopation, rhythms etc. You can tell how he truly loves music and playing!...Kudos to you JT!
It’s interesting to see all the detailed bass work John put into those songs. All those years I never knew just how much work went into those songs we all loved. Great Video.
My gosh how I loved John Taylor the most when I was a teen in the ‘80s...now I understand why! ✌🏽✌🏽✌🏽
Me too!!!
Absolutely!!!
What a treat his videos are especially these days. You brighten up our days, John!!! Much respect and love to you and DD.
I was 19 in 1983 and I embraced the look of Duran Duran. I was a fledgling bass player and also embraced the syncopated sound of JT's bass, always used those little finger octave sounds :-). I cant love this series more than I do, i look forward to it every week. Very cool.
I always wanted mr john Taylor to demonstrate his bass lines he dont talk about them much in past but its all different now just like dream 😊
The reflex... Beatiful song. Always I listening Duran duran when I was younger!
My new fav UA-cam channel!
It's so fun to learn that John was listening to all the bassists I thought he listening to.
I had no idea how talented this guy is. These things he's sharing are absolutely incredible.
Style....John got style...the best bass lines of the 80’s!!! Here I am practicing...🤘🏻

I can listen to the A, B, C parts all day man! Incredible getting this stuff first hand from the OG's. Grew up on this stuff and part of my DNA.
I'm a guitarplayer and I love the bass in Duran Duran. Man, how I would like to play with Duran Duran as a guitarist. The band from my youth.
What beautiful memories !!!
I don't know a thing about music but it's a pleasure see how much JT enjoy playing the bass ❤
Probably, the greatest rhythym section ever. John Taylor's the bloke who made me switch from six-strings to four. Technique will get you so far, but you can't teach what comes from the heart.
I'm not a musician but I enjoy watching these tutorials very much.
Taking a tutorial from the master himself. Wow, what a treat!
John, you the reason I learned Bass! I'm a beginner, but you are inspiring me to keep practicing 😉
I can't get enough of these videos! Love you John and Duran Duran!!
I’m sharing my love of bass and these songs with my son who is learning bass. This is a dream come true.
That Rio print in the background is awesome. Would love to have one in my room.
I was going to comment on that too - super cool
Believe it or not, the bass in this song opened my eyes on bass rifs especially on the chorus. Love this tune!
I loved this song the very first time I heard it! For me that's rare. John you still are on of my biggest influences on the instrument.... Cheers.....
