Got a rear main seal job done on my 5.7 trans am ws6 around Christmas and started leaking around 1 day of really driving it. Mechanic didn’t use the alignment tool claiming it wasn’t a factory procedure. He claims it was bad part but since seeing this video and talking to a mechanic it’s opened my eyes about the importance of alignment tool. Either way if it is a bad part I’m going to need to be prepared to fork out the money. If it’s the alignment it’s on them, I’ll return in spring when I have the money. We don’t know what the issues is till we take off the transmission
You don't need that tool for the rear main. I install seal into the cover loosely, install cover with bolts then press it on by hand then torque the bolts down. No leaks and I'm pushing close to 800whp in my 91 z28
it's fun and games until you do a 30min track session and a misaligned seal goes BY BY. 1/4 mile pulls and burnouts don't put an engine under nearly as much stress as running all-out for 30min.
You are correct, apparently some don't know how to read a set of precision calipers either. Get your bolts to where there is a little tension without seal in housing. Then just go around till the gap is even all the way around. Then tighten up, recheck, and drive seal in.
@@notchbackgta torquing the rear cover can cause the plate to move off center. Torquing the cover before the two pan bolts can cause it to be off center. The alignment tool is a must!
@@3rdGenGuy Never heard of it either, and I've been doing this for forty years. The thrust bearing would almost have to be missing for the crank to walk that far. I've seen Windsor Fords and big block Chrysler's eat thrust bearings and journals.

Good job, man. I use the same alignment tool and the same cover and seal kit when I do them.
Ppl commenting “tool is not necessary”. You know what else is not necessary? Cheaping out on a $15-20 tool for a 4-7 hour job.
Lmao right, can’t afford to do it once can’t afford to do it twice🤷🏼♂️
cant wait to see how you do the pvc system

@@3rdGenGuyWhen did he say he doesn't track the car 😂 assume much

What do you torque it to?
the m8 bolts are 18lb-ft
about 8lbft for the m6 long bolts.
@@3rdGenGuy thanks
Great video ... did you do this just to show us you have a tsp cam ;)
You have a LS1? I thought you had a LS3
I wish ha ha
100hp difference between those forsure
Wasn't this a rebuilt engine?
he was pretty sure with the way his pvc system was set up that it was causing to much crankcase pressure and it blew his seal out.
junkyard LS1 with questionable miles.
my PCV routing was wrong so I think crankcase pressure was getting way to high.
What’s the new insta ?
not new, but @3rdgenguy
Amazing!!
hi, where I can buy that aligment tool?
they sell em on their website, but they also sell em on amazon.
USA product
www.saccitycorvette.com/AlignItTools.html
i didn't see u thighing the 2 long oil pan bolts
torque them after the cover bolts are torqued.
Can a bad OVC valve make a new main seal plate leak? This is what I’m being told 😮seems far fetched
crankcase pressure can make a main seal leak.
Use a sharpy and tool isn’t needed
why risk a job that takes 4-6 hours to do?
tool guarantees the main seal will last and not leak.
Looks like a billet barbell.
a improved racing barbell yep.
The tool really isn't necessary
I talked to an engine builder that probably builds 10x LS 427s a week, and he said that tool is ABSOLUTKLY necessary.
although the OEM tool is steel.
@@3rdGenGuy you install the seal before putting on the engine, the seal self centers on the crank. It's really not necessary at all
well no, the OEM GM repair guide is the method I used.

@@kennydemartini2169 no, it's not 🤦
It's going to leak again. The problem is the trust surface on ls engines is weak and this is what causes this leak
never heard a soul ever mention the crank thrust spec for causing a leak

Part number for the seal kit please thanks
