ComicWriter 2020 Only Velma ran under that mentality. Fred, Daphne, Shaggy, and Scooby all run under the pretense it was just actual monsters. So it's presented as "Velma's in denial and the others just accept the reality of the situation".

ComicWriter 2020 Oh, absolutely it's dumb. But I'm just saying, it's important to note only Velma is skeptical of everything being real because while it ruins HER character, everyone else still believes the original was real monsters, so it's not as bad as a total retcon of the original movie's ending.

Next Year Scoob that's what the title will be coming to the big screen which will be a somewhat of a prequel showing us when Scooby Do first meets Shaggy and the rest of the gang forming Mystery Inc however this will also be a crossover film including many other Hanna Barbara characters such as Dastardly And Muttley, Captain Caveman and others hmm sounds more like Wacky Races meets The Avengers meets Justice League type movie?! Writer: Okay, remember the Cat Island movie?
    Studio: You mean Zombie Island?
Writer: Yeah that one. How about we make a remake of it?
Studio: Oh cool. Are we going to find out that the cat people of the original movie had like a litter of kittens and they want revenge for the death of their parents?
Writer: Uhh.... no, that would be extremely, extremely stupid.
Studio: Oh, okay. What was your idea?
Writer: Alright the cat people this time: people in masks. The zombies this time: actors. And they are both separate groups now, with the zombie plot line being about a man wanting to direct a movie while the cat people just want to find the buried pirate treasure.
Studio: That seems... a little complicated. Do you think we can sell it?
Writer: Actually selling the movie will be super easy. Barely an inconvenience.
    Studio: Oh really?
Writer: Yeah. The title "Return to Zombie Island" alone will get people to buy it, so I think if we focus on the return aspect, people are going to buy it no matter how bad it is.
Studio: Ah, referencing better works in order to make your work seem better is *tight.*
    Writer: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Studio: So, anything else I should know?
Writer: Oh yeah. I'm making Fred get obsessed with the Mystery Machine after he sold it.
    Studio: Why?
    Writer: Doesn't matter.
    Studio: Fair enough.
    Writer: So what you think?
Studio: I like the idea. Let us just hope no one makes a video deconstructing the plot that may inform people about what happens that might make them avoid the movie.

I’m just gonna keep my complaints short and sweet.....THIS WAS AWFUL!
    1. What is with the retconning?! First of all, the gang were a bit grown up and went their own separate ways (Velma had her own Bookstore, Shaggy and Scooby were working at an airport)
And Daphne’s Show wasn’t a summer school project, it was HER OWN SHOW and Fred was her camera guy
    2. Velma’s explanations are RIDICULOUS! There is no way that swamp gas would give that much a hallucination, the cat creatures and Zombies disintegrated RIGHT IN FRONT OF THEM!
I mean even the others were like “uh no, they were real” but they decided to just let her have this one
I swear it’s like ever since that KISS movie, she has gotten annoying with her skepticism, so much so that I think she has a problem!
    3. Lastly, I’m thinking that since this retcon has butchered up the Scooby Doo movie timeline cuz if this movie happened, that would mean that either Witch’s Ghost didn’t happen or Velma written it off as an “unsolved mystery” SOMEHOW like with Reluctant Werewolf

Your second point sounds like they did the exact same thing for this that they did in the Curse of the 13th Ghost movie earlier this year. Down to the T. I hear the whole movie she played the smug "This isn't real" role annoyingly so there too, even in the end saying the ghosts (from the entire series!) were simply hallucinations there too....aaaand she was allowed to "have" that one too.
It does sound like they've just amped her skepticism up to annoying levels as of late.
But the way they've handled these movies with things like the continuity issues seems a bit annoying, as someone who's yet to see either.

Are we just ignoring the nonresolution of the actual cat person who was trying to stop them from being on the island? Cause that is the worst part about this movie to me.
Edit: After posting this I came up with an awesome plot for this movie: take out the whole movie aspect of it, as well as the promise story that padded the first half hour or so. Have the director be a descendant of one of the original cat people from the movie, probably Jacques send he might've had a family before becoming a cat person. He would visit the gang under an alias and invite them to a hotel they're building on the island. Once there, a cat person (who would be just the director's character in costume) would be attacking them and causing problems. As the movie progressed, the gang would realize what was going on, and the villain would trap them in the cave under the hotel. His ultimate goal would be to preform a ritual to become a cat person, and take revenge on the gang for basically killing his family. I genuinely feel like that would be a great sequel to the best Scooby Doo movie, no retcons, enough call backs to make sense, and a unique enough story while keeping what made the original good and adding to it.

Consider the following problem. Simone and Lena live on a remote island in the middle of Louisiana. While many settlers came to their island over the years, they still would have the risk of people dying in the bayou. They naturally would want a more reliable system to ensure people could come and go from the island in a relatively safe manner. The 1800s comes around and steamboats are invented. This allows for a safe easy access to the island and allows more victims to be lured. The issue comes in who runs the ferryboat. If you drove say four people to the island and none of them came back, wouldn't that be suspicious? The ferryman thus would need to be in on the plan to reduce the chances that they will record the number of disappearances or alert the authorities. Simone and Lena only need the bare minimum amount of victims so having too many potential witnesses such as a fully armed force of police officers could detrimentally expose them. So the ferryman must know about the secret and be willing to keep quiet. Best way to do that is turn them into one of them. That way they have a permeant access channel for victims that eases the difficulty of luring them in by simply having the only entrance be by a ferryman werecat just like them.

I mean if we're talking about a sequel to the original movie, then I think it would have been smarter to continue the tragic villain theme. Scooby and the Gang learn that a series of zombie outbreaks are spreading in Louisianna so naturally, they travel there to investigate. The assumption is naturally skepticism and the movie plays out with dark lighting and terrific settings. After they find the zombies, much to their shock they find they're real. This confuses the gang because the only time they encountered zombies was on Moonscar Island so against Scooby and Shaggy's begging they return to the island. The island is abandoned and showing massive signs of decay. While here, they discover this is the outbreak of the zombies and investigate the area. Along the way, they learn more about the supernatural backstory behind the island and start to piece together the truth. Eventually, it's revealed that three long-time friends were behind it. They reveal that they intended to resurrect Simone and Lena, however, it failed due to the ritual requiring the presence of the souls they failed to drain. So they continued resurrecting zombies to lure the gang back to the island. You see one or more of the friends is dying from an incurable disease. As a result, they searched desperately through information on the supernatural and dark magic to find a cure. The werecat curse while their last resort is the only solution they have left. They don't care anymore about the price if it means they can stay together. This is meant to parallel the gang's tight friendship which for the sake of thematics has been thinning out again. The friends soon resurrect the werecats who now have until dawn to drain the gang before the sun rises or their souls will be destroyed forever. Several chase scenes and other character development later and the gang survives the night and all the cat creatures are gone forever. The film ends with the gang's friendship restored as they head off to their next big mystery. That's a rough draft idea I came up at least for a better plot than this movie. I think it would be nice to bring in a friendship parallel between the gang and villains. I also think it could work with expanding our understanding of the supernatural and the nature of the curse itself. I mean the original movie left a lot of holes as to how the heck those three werecats lived as long as they did. In real life, they'd have probably died in a couple of years without victims to drain. It would also maintain the dark thematics of Zombie Island and be at least a semi-better attempt. I dunno just a thought.

Simone and Leena have manage to survive as werecats since 16 or 17th century until the 21st century is simple. They lure people on the island and drain their soul,it was explained also by simone that settlers have been coming to the island as well until the Civil war.As time gose by few people probably come to the island so they turn Jaque into a werecat as well cause he's a ferryman and that he could bring more victims to the island to maintain their mortality. So that sums up how they loved long enough to survive until scooby and the gamg showed up. Like they could've reintroduced the darker elements again in the film, as they did with the original film. Like they could've had the film director possessed by Simone because of the amulet and her trying to resurrect Leena and Jaque, and them continuing the plan of taking the life source from people
The way you have the Mystery gang come to play because the director saw Velma’s blog and tried to reach out to Velma to hear more about their experiences.
I think that Velma handing waving away the supernatural stuff she went through in the first movie is pretty insulting to anyone that grew up watching the movie. Like lmao she literally acknowledges that zombies are going into the afterlife because they had their spirits avenged.

They could've made a decent movie and have the events of this be apart of the supernatural. Have the group start hearing rumors about the island again, and when the group remembers the events of Zombie island, one of them can try to reassure them the cat creatures were destroyed. But have one of them mention Simone and Lena not being the only practitioners of their ritual, since they had indoctrinated Jaques. Even if it is a slight reference, they can also mention detective Beau since he was also an eyewitness to those events and could possibly know more about the recent events.

I expect Velma's newfound scepticism from 13th Ghost and RtZI to have some form of payoff some time in the future. By this point her scepticism feels like a deliberate plot point and, in my opinion, the only way to redeem her and finish off her character arc would be for it to all come back and bite her. Maybe in the next movie the gang search for the mystery machine and somehow end up in Dracula's castle (Reluctant Werewolf), where Velma's scepticism gets totally overwhelmed by all the monsters in there, causing her to go into a karmic meltdown. One can only hope.
Assuming RW would be turned into a sequel, it would be interesting to see if they make Ghoul School and Boo Brothers canon and/or make sequels for those too. If they do and Velma's character gets a 5-movie arc where she goes from hardcore cynic in 13th Ghost / RtZI to someone more open-minded by the end of the arc, that would actually be pretty amazing to watch. But honestly, her hardcore scepticism in 13G / RtZI was never needed in the first place.
Edit: The art style of ZI made me feel a sense of magic and mystery on Moonscar Island (Beau's line at the end helped) that just felt very lacking here. That same atmosphere just didn't exist beyond the opening credits recap which was kinda disappointing. Thinking back on it, if I probably would've been more immersed in the plot if the entire movie was done in the same style as the opening recap.

How about instead of a film crew luring them to the island it's more cat god worshippers luring them back to the island to avenge Simone and Lina?
Velma's scepticism could still be a plot point but then she's finally faced with the fact that it's all real.
Throughout there are more ghosts and zombies trying to warn the gang much like in the original. Maybe they even get haunted by the ghosts of Simone and Lina for extra spook.
Maybe Beau the detective/gardener from the original is brought back too.
Ditch the high school nonsense and age them up again. Maybe the beginning could show the aftermath of the last film when Daphne returns to her talk show and Velma her book shop. Potentially bridging the other DVD movies into a somewhat more readable timeline with subtle hints and nods.

There’s a lot of things i didn’t get about this movie sequel.
    1. How was Velma able to say it was just swamp gas And that’s what caused the hallucinations? Didn’t she see the zombies close to the end when they disappeared to Rest In Peace?
    2. Where did the other cat creature come from? Because if we remember they were only three surviving members of that cat cult and they all died when they weren’t able to absorb enough souls before the harvest moon so that was mean there would’ve been at least one other cat creature or two other cat creatures that survived?
Overall I don’t like this new Velma being so modern and trying to prove everything wrong because now if they’re going to keep redoing these movies where they rebuild that there are actual real supernatural or extra-terrestrial then all she’s going to do is just prove that they’re all wrong and I hope they don’t do that and keep the mystery of things that can’t be explained.

The majority of the movie was fine. Not good but not the worst thing in existence. The ending however was an insult to the original. There was nothing unsatisfactory about how the last movie ended, Velma! Don't rationalize it that was the main draw of these movies. The monsters were real! Making them teens was also unnecessary. And the treasure was mentioned like twice in the last movie but they turned it into the main reason for everything. And what about the big black cat? Whos is he? Why did he not melt into bones? What was his goal? His existence just left so many unanswered questions. So the movie is at least watchable, but it completely falls apart at the end.

Here could be an idea: Beau the detective from the first film is now a police chief/commissioner assigned to the case to discover a new bout of sudden disappearances from Moonscar Island returning to an unsolved case and he reaches out to Mystery Inc to help him as they were with him the last time. The island is being run by new people who have turned the plantation into a hotel/resort to lure new victims to the island. The people running the resort are people who also worship the same cat god Lena and Simone did and are trying to bring them back to learn the technique they used to keep their immortality. The new people running the island are doing their best to charm and throw the gang off guard because they want to use the sacrifice of Mystery Inc to resurrect Lena and Simone since the gang were heavily involved in their demise to begin with. The people going missing aren't drained to death but they are kidnapped and held captive as offerings for when Lena and Simone are resurrected or to drain after they get rid of Mystery Inc. Lena and Simone are defeated once again and the new people running the island are arrested and hauled off to jail for the kidnapping of the other victims which allows Beau to finally close the case on Moonscar Island. This idea would pull a bit from Scooby Doo and Legend of the Vampire in the idea that mortal beings who want to gain immortality are willing to kidnap humans to offer up as sacrifices to a powerful supernatural entity in return for all powerful immortality. Legend of the Vampire had Daphne as key sacrifice human though in this story it would be Shaggy and Scooby are the main targets as it was their bungling that really kicked off the unraveling of the evil plot so the gang would have to rescue Shaggy and Scooby which reverses the roles from the original.

Honestly, I'd have taken inspiration from Lovecraft to get them back onto the Island.
The guy has this really chilling short story called 'The Cats of Ulthar', about how a miserable old couple is eaten alive by Stray Cats after cooking and eating a Kitten for dinner. And I'd recommend you read it whenever you get the chance.
I'd start the film there, a run down New England Town, which used to be a prosperous Port, before the Fish ran out. With the gang trying to solve a classic mystery. Old Tycoon tries to scare away townsfolk so he can sell the land and make money.
Anywho, during the chase, a stray Cat gets hurt by the Monster, the gang trap him, give him to the police, and all that.
But, before they leave town the next day, they find the man has seemingly died, being eaten down to the bone by the hundreds of stray cats that now inhabits the small town Jail.
On one of the Stray Cats, they see an emblem that reminds them of the one seen on Zombie Island.
They found out that the cat belonged to a boy who was with the Circus, and are now trying to catch up to the group.
Little montage of the Gang going from the town across America back to Zombie Island, where the Circus is holding their next performance.
Bam, keeping the supernatural, and linking it back to the old creepy cat God.

Zombie Island is probably ranked up as my top favorite Scooby Doo episode. Just barely beating Scoobynatural, the Supernatural episode. The music was fantastic, the mystery was intense, and it was fun seeing how the gang escaped an island surrounding them with supernatural beings and enemies. On top of everything, zombies are my favorite horror subject. That being said, when I saw there was "Return to Zombie Island" I instantly had high hopes. Immediately as soon as reading the name I was asking myself "How will the mystery deepen?" "What would possess them to even want to return to that island?" "What new real threats will Mystery Inc. encounter?" After watching the movie, it doesn't, they were tricked in an extremely obvious way, none... are the answers. Why did you hide the cat-man? I have no interest in finding out who it was and what he wanted. Why do you keep dividing the group between those who want to solve mysteries, and those who do. From my past experience, Shaggy is terrified all the time but he LIKES solving mysteries. Listen to his excitement when he finds clues! Same with Scooby.
Ok now this ending... to me... was about half the movie. When they were recording everything, I actually thought there was going to be some interesting mystery... but no. It was just a movie being filmed that we find out half way in to the dang movie. Which clearly was going to make the gang act weird because they know they are being filmed. They acted overly brave or overly stupid. That maybe has some comedic aspect to it, but it would have been much better as the actual 15 minute ending. The film made me sick. I LOVE the Scooby Doo mysteries. But this movie was super lazy, not very funny, not very scary, and just made me all around sad. These are cartoons. You could have them do ANYTHING. But instead you took a safe non-adventurous route and gave me a terrible sequel to the best Scooby Doo mystery probably that will every be.

They lure the gang for a reunion or vacation and then reveal that for the past year the villians have been luring other tourists and locals to the island to turn them into slave cat creatures for an army that they will use to invade the main land and take over louisana or the world and that she was going to do the same to them. Chase scene with awesome music happens, they discover a crypt with a magic spell book that has the cure to break the villians spell that can only be done by someone with a pure heart and they make a plan. LIke in most scooby doo films the plan nearly doesn't work and another awesome chase scene with awesome music happens but the gets cornered but then scooby reads the magic incantation and it works and all the cat creatures go back to normal and before the villians can attack the kids their souls are dragged back to a firey pit. From there the police arrive and it's a happy ending with scooby saying scooby doo. Maybe a subplot about how scooby and shaggy trying to find the hottest chili peppers for a chili contest but can never get it because of distractions and coincedences and gets them in the end as a thank you or velma meeting up with Bo again and trying to restart their romantic spark only to find he has a girlfriend or boyfriend. imo a sequel to Zombie Island couldn't really work anyway, just based on the ending of the original. there were only 3 cat creatures on Moonscar Island, all of whom are dead at the end of the film. you could argue that maybe someone else was able to transform into a cat creature, but that would need a lot of explaining to make it work. Jaques the Ferryman was only able to become a cat creature because Simone and Lena helped him complete the ritual. since they aren't around anymore it would be very difficult for anyone to learn about the cat cult religion, let alone figure out how to complete the ritual to transform into a cat creature. there's also the issue of the ghosts and zombies on the island. the only reason Moonscar Island was haunted was because of the cat creatures draining the souls/life source out of people. they remained on the island because they weren't able to rest in peace. after the cat creatures were defeated the curse was lifted and all the zombies and ghosts were able to rest in peace, ending the hauntings for good. so that leaves us with no more cat creatures, ghosts, or zombies on Moonscar Island. i feel like the ending of Zombie Island was pretty conclusive and fully wrapped up the story, leaving us with very little to work with for any sequels. Return to Zombie Island didn't need to exist, especially since The Witch's Ghost was already a fantastic sequel in its own right. not only that but they also made so many unnecessary retcons to the original, and i hate the fact that they even had the audacity to try and retcon the real supernatural happenings in the original! can't wait for them to make a follow-up to The Witch's Ghost where they have Velma try to explain away Sarah Ravencroft's actual ghost dragging Ben Ravencroft down with her, trapping both of them inside of the spell book forever (and then the book getting burned, effectively killing both Ben and Sarah's ghost). i find myself hating this movie for the same reason i hate the 13th Ghost movie, and it's the disrespect for the source material. why make a sequel to a story that had real monsters, and then retcon the monsters into being fake all along? some of the best entries in the Scooby-Doo franchise include real monsters, and what makes that so interesting is that it subverts your expectations by breaking away from the classic "masked villain" formula. don't get me wrong, i like the classic formula, but there is a time and place for that! the whole point of Zombie Island was to break away from what came before and subvert the old formula, so to come in here and force the old formula onto Zombie Island is just disrespectful and defeats the purpose of the original.

I highly doubt that the people behind this actually watched the movie beforehand, and just went off of memory. Lol. And on top of the weird de-aging of the characters, what really, really rubbed me the wrong way too was that Velma wasn't even the huge skeptic in the original film? Sure, she was skeptical, because that *is* Velma, but Velma is also equally available to entertain the idea of the supernatural, aliens, etc. She'll try to find ways to explain their existences, sure, but not outright scoff at the idea. Which was how Velma was throughout these four movies, and in iterations before this.
But then we have that FRED was the huge skeptic in the movie. He was the one that constantly argued that it was all fake and stuff, out of denial, before he had to accept it. It wasn't even Velma in that role. Shaggy, Scooby and Daphne were all in the acceptance boat. Freddie in denial. And Velma somewhere in between as the logical one. She observed zombies, and when there was no way to explain it, she accepted it. She observed herself floating, and once the voodoo dolls were revealed, she accepted that as well.
I dunno. I just- I just about died when I realized what the "sequel" was trying to do with Velma by completely ignoring what has been established. Lol

Honestly, in this era of entertainment people rely too much on remakes, reboots, and sequels. They forgot what the original great. CREATIVITY!!!!!!. People were willing to try new things, which is exactly why the 1st zombie island was amazing, it tried to mix up the Scooby-Doo formula. What made this movie bad is just how they relied on the original too much and forget everything that made it great

If they want A good Scooby-Doo movie, how about "The Return of Scrappy-Doo"? Where scrappy has changed from the events of the 1st live action film, and deems on a road to regaining the Gangs (Especially his uncle Scooby's) trust. While A mysterious monster is trying to put Scrappy in situations where he's still his normal "Puppy power" self from the old days.

Honestly, I had super low expectations of this movie given how reviews had described Thirteenth Ghost as retconning the real supernatural elements from the original series that movie was based off of. So this movie was a pleasant surprise, in my opinion, and I had actually really enjoyed it... However, I will say all the criticisms of the review here are entirely valid and you're right on the mark for the vast majority of the video.
One thing I will say I disagree on, to cover that quickly, is the fact the zombies aren't the main focus... Which I feel is a logical choice, considering the original had the zombies as a fake out threat to the real threat of the cat creatures. And similarly here, the cat creatures take over as the treats after the fake zombies are unmasked. Sure, outside the confirmed real cat creature, the cat creatures in the movie were fakes, as well, but hey, using the real story of the original Zombie Island to stage a hoax is something that kind of makes sense for villains to do in the Scooby Doo universe. I mean, with often legends and myths related to monsters are spun into a costume to find some hidden treasure or some nonsense.
Now, I want to start with what I liked about the movie, since it did have some legitimate high points and moments of interest, in my eyes. The first is how Scooby and Shaggy, after winning the vacation, decide to force the gang to promise to not investigate anything. On a conceptual level, it's REALLY interesting because Scooby and the gang intending to go on vacation only for a monster to crash the party and force them into solving another case has been done to death, so it's kind of nice seeing Shaggy and Scooby so adamant on keeping a vacation a vacation, instead of everyone just resigning themselves to do work. And it's also heartwarming to see the lengths Fred, Velma, and Daphne go to make good on their promise, seeing as how they so often just use Shaggy and Scooby as live bait and never bat an eyelash to their friends' constant stress and anxiety from their terror fueled position in the gang that it's REALLY refreshing to see that addressed and having the rest of the gang owning up to mistreating Scooby and Shaggy.
Second, I appreciated how the movie treated Zombie Island's events as entirely as they happened in the original. Like, as I said above, I went into this movie with SUPER low expectations given how Thirteenth Ghost retconned the original as a hoax from what I heard (granted, it could be the same as this movie where Velma's just pushing a denial driven narrative and the original still had legit monsters, but I digress) so I was happy that as it turned out, the zombies and cat creatures were still treated as legit among Scooby, Shaggy, Fred, and Daphne. Velma I can live with it by reasoning she's in denial over the events of what happened and that's a coping mechanism.
And third for what I liked, I thought having a movie where Scooby and the gang make a movie based on the events of their first movie is kind of a genius move in a meta sense. If the movie had more heavily run with that, I actually think this could've been a great way to celebrate the legacy of the original movie and the franchise history as a whole while moving away from the shadow of the original movie. I can't say I think there's a better mystery to make follow up the original movie's mystery, however, but like I said, people abusing the original movie's story to make a Scooby Doo hoax makes a lot of sense in universe, so I'll let it slide.
But I did admit I felt you were absolutely right about the movie's failings, and since I've listed the positives, I'm ready to list the negatives. First, it's the fact Shaggy and Scooby hold Fred, Velma, and Daphne to their promise so strictly and how that basically gets tired FAST. I praised it for taking a different look at the character dynamics than we're used to, but it also basically forces them to run the same quickly tired out joke for the first thirty minutes of the movie. It was a great idea bogged down by poor execution.
Also, the pacing of the movie was just... Awful. Like, while I enjoyed the movie for what it was worth, it REALLY felt like it took way too long to get the gang to Moonscar Island and to also have them actually starting to investigate... When they only manage to set a trap and unmask the zombies because Fred, Velma, and Daphne silently pieced everything together while not openly discussing any clues to the fake zombie mystery. And then we go to them making the movie of them making the movie which is quickly thrown out the window for the sake of the cat creature attack, and then that's dealt with in pretty short order since the movie's run time is low by that point they introduced arguably the main villains of the movie. Like I said, I think the movie could've been stronger if they leaned more into the making the movie angle. It would've been better had the gang agreed to star in a movie based on the events of the first movie and more openly had the cat creatures interfering with the shoot and having that be the crux of the movie.
And then there were little things like Alan just burning the boat to leave which nobody really calls out once the cat creatures arrive, Fred's characterization (which has kinda been super hit or miss in the latest movies where they make him a ditz to an unfunny degree), and Velma's characterization (though I do hold that having the rest of the gang believing in the supernatural elements of the original film, it's mostly passable here). As for the music during the chase scenes, it was good as a throwback to the Where Are You series' music numbers, but it just didn't fit the action of the second chase scene, whereas the first chase scene it fit a lot better... But the song was kind of bland and boring, in my opinion, so eh. I don't often notice background music, so I can't comment on it outside the two actual vocalized tracks. Something a bit more rock and roll or contemporary would have suited the scenes better, in my eyes, since Scooby's definitely no stranger, even in later series, to having some rock music as chase background tunage.
But the movie had a handful of jokes that got me to laugh, had the occasional suspenseful moment, and overall was a genuinely enjoyable watch, in my opinion... But as a sequel to Zombie Island? Yeah, no, it obviously wasn't ever going to even hit the original's level of quality. And given the nature of being a sequel, I can't say it stands up on its own because sequels are follow ups to movies so you literally can't remove the sequel from the original. But like, just watching this expecting a modern Scooby flick, it's good for a somewhat cheesy, goofy cartoon time. I liked it, but it's a very mixed bag, if you couldn't tell from my thoughts on it.

Hated this movie, I was surprised to find out there was a sequel to Zombie Island, so my expectations were high. The Direct to Video Scooby Doo movies were brilliant and I grew up watching those movies. The original Zombie Island had a slightly darker tone, a more iconic art style, and a fantastic soundtrack. This movie is mindless, and takes away what I loved about the original movie. Shaggy was the worst, for the first half of the movie, he was acting like a child, forcing the gang to not solve mysteries which is what gets them in this whole situation. I had no idea why Fred sold the Mystery Machine, didn't know this was a sequel to another movie (that I'm not gonna watch). This movie just makes the entire gang annoying, and I hate it when the gang gets treated like kids, why would a Sheriff stop the gang from solving mysteries? I always assumed the gang was late teens-early 20s, so treating them like kids was always something I found annoying. This movie was a cash grab, why else would they make a sequel to a movie that came out 21 years ago? They wanted money and made a lazy sequel to a beloved classic. I took a look at Rotten Tomatoes and this movie has a 27% rating, and on Google, it has a 2/5 stars, looks like most people agree this movie was trash.

Here's a better plot for Return to Zombie Island. Someone wants to do a story on the gang's adventure on Zombie Island and shadows them as they go back to the island to explore. They meet new owners of the house, look around the woods, and then run into supernatural threats which they think is just a hoax. Well Velma thinks it's a hoax, and keeps reassuring the reporter that it's all just fake; but it actually is real. What's the threat? The whole point of the zombies was that they were trying to warn people of the werecat threat, with the werecats now gone, there would be no point to the zombies still being around, unless there are evil zombies like Moonscar. And the fourth werecat in this movie was a nice touch, they could've used him for a different idea for a Zombie Island sequel.
The reason I said Velma thinks it's a hoax cuz that's Velma now. Velma lately in shows and movies has always stuck with facts and science, a logical explanation. In the original Zombie Island movie she wasn't like that but with the current writing on Velma's character, I don't think they should change it. Velma being skeptical and not believing in paranormal and supernatural is not the worst character trait, lots of characters are like that

My expectations were very low when I heard about this, and I admit the movie was a little better than I thought it would be. But only a little. Between this and The Curse of the 13th Ghost, I think I preferred Curse of the 13th Ghost - and I was sorely disappointed with the last 10 minutes of that movie. I didn't like Return to Zombie Island for basically all the reasons you explained in this video. Maybe...MAYBE it could work if the original, far superior movie never existed and "Return to Zombie Island" was a faux sequel of some kind.
(Also, I'm really glad I'm not the only one who doesn't like Kate Micucci as Velma. Kate Micucci is cute and great but Velma she is not)

d.They turned once beloved characters from this show into stubborn, deluded, morons.
I know that Fred has been obsessed with the Mystery Machine in some of the series before, but this is just creepy. Velma always been logical but in this she is stubborn and she isn’t the only one. A Reluctant Werewolf sequel could actually be funny on a few lvls. 1) we don’t know if everyone aside from Shaggy & Scoob know that Shaggy got turned, or even believe that it really happened. So to have them confront that “holly crap Dracula & the others are real” would be funny. 2) could just see Shag & Scoob just be ‘done’ while the others freak out. “Like come on man, not again”, like 0 fear since they dealt with him b4. 3) cliché but could have the plot where the other 3 are also turned into monsters ?

I think it would been better if they still won the contest and still went to “moon star island resort” but instead there is still the manger and staff kinda as a base to how the place is still running. For the mysterious cat man I think instead being in the shadows a lot more . Maybe the manager and staff can bring people in to their resort to keep the catman going . With that deal in place the staff brings people and catman brings the gold and riches. Basically like the first movie but maybe more of a revenge type deal. The staff is “metaphorically “ the zombies and maybe we could figure how the catman came about. Maybe a man that wanted to be spared and he possibly ratting out the others . Therefore leaving Luna and the other girl thinking they were the only ones left. Idk just a possibility. Now the catman has come back to get the treasure for himself. The catman probably knew the ladies would take out the pirates. Now no one would be in his way. It probably sounds dumb but please no hate 🥺

Making a sequel to 'Zombie Island', especially one that disrespects the original, was just downright boneheaded and unnecessary. It's like if they made a sequel to 'Mask of the Phantasm' and have that sequel just hand wave everything that happened in the original as just one big dream Batman was having. That would be like a one gigantic middle-finger to the fans who watched and loved the original animated film. Which is exactly how I describe this trainwreck of a Scooby-Doo film. The new movie was disappointing with the whole movie within a movie thing, fake monsters this time around and Velma's exaggerated skepticism shrugging everything in the first movie off in favor of completely mundane explanations, what a surprise (swamp gas? really?!), but at the same time I also knew that the first movie would be a tough act to follow. I was somewhat intrigued when the 'found footage' movie genre was mentioned though because I thought that they were going to tell us that these movie people on the island had found Fred's camcorder that he lost in the swamp the first time (yeah, anyone remember that?) complete with the tape still in it that contained video proof of the zombies (VELMA!!!) and were inspired by it. Yes, the chase song could have better (darker?) although I liked the opening and closing theme tracks. The only cool thing I came out of the movie with is the knowledge of another possible 'real' cat creature on the island which leaves a potential third mystery open for someone else to solve. I also have my own mystery to solve here: where to get a replica of Simone's cat pendant, turns out it's a pretty sick prop. 😎
