I saw the title and thumbnail and got excited over getting a Paganini episode. Some heavy metal musicians and historians cite him as an inspiration to parts of the genre today.
Brittany Diaz Paganini is yngwie malmsteen hero and he plays several of his compositions. Regardless of whether Yngwie is metal in someone's opinion he is without a doubt a classical violinist playing a strat.
True. Then there's the neoclassical dudes like Yngwie Malmsteen and Jason Becker who took on the speed as well. 12 notes per second? That's facemelting shit right there.
12 notes a second is 16th notes at 180bpm. It's very quick, but Malmsteen, & Vai have topped that by quite a bit with alternate picking, even more so with other techniques. I get 11 a second alternate picking in my band's fastest piece (16th notes at 165bpm). The piece that Vai plays in the film Crossroads is based on Paganinni's 5th Caprice
It's a little sad when someone is amazingly good at something, so people attribute their skill to the devil or the supernatural. The person likely practiced very hard to get that good, even if they're also naturally gifted, and that deserves recognition for the hard work that it is.
Formoka, Italians have a thing for being extremely aggressive, which likely caused him to be determined immensely. He was definitely talented, and practiced very hard. I don't believe in this "devil gave him powers crap either", matter fact I 100% agree with you. I'm Italian personally so that's another reason why I agree :).
When people are too stupid to see someone stand out, they just put negativity on the person to see themselves in a better light and that way they can move on
This is the legend: "She (Paganini's Mother) claimed to have had a dream when her boy was five years old of the grandeur that was to come. She saw a theatre in flames, with her son grown tall playing triumphant music with Tartini conducting and competing for the soul of her son was a red Devil holding a guitar. Then, an Angel appeared, and she asked that her son become a great violinist and that is name should become immortal. A sign from the Angel indicated that her wish would be granted. Paganini carried this story with him all his life long and vouched for its authenticity. When his mother died he said that he lamented that he was not there to close her eyes, but he was not there, her son Nicolo was as nearly always far away in the service of his Demon and the successful pursuit of glory.
If it were possible to make a pact with the devil, I think there would be an overwhelming number of rich, famous and skillful people and even people with superpowers.
There was some vague notion that the violin was often "haunted" by ghosts of those who were sexually unsatisfied in life, and that playing it too often risked provoked random lust and adultery; it was a theme brought up in the 1998 movie "The Red Violin". But I don't know much about the context of all this, and I want to know more on it too.
Probably a similar reason as to why Rock music (and by extension Guitars) was thought to be the "devil's music". Broke social mores and norms, and people at the time had a world view divided into two categories. Things that were "the devil" and things that were not. Also, a quick bit of googlein told me it incited people to dance, in a way that church folk of that time felt was "not very christian".
All of a sudden.. there shined a shiny demon.. in the middle... of the road... AND HE SAID "Plaaaaaay the best soonnnnng in the world... or I'll eat your souls"
When the Devil had finished, Paganini said "You're pretty good, old son. But sit down in that chair right there and let me show you how it's done!" He played fire on the mountain, run, boys, run! Devil's in the house of the rising sun! Chicken's in the bread pan pickin out dough. Granny, will your dog bite, no child no!
First heard about this guy after playing Abyss Odyssey (he was a major character in the game). He lived a very interesting life, and it's cool to see that the modern "rock star" persona isn't as new a thing as we'd typically think.
I thought it was gonna be about Tartini's devil's trill sonata. Tartini claimed he saw the devil play the violin in his dream in an exquisite manner and then woke up recreating what he saw the devil play to the best of his ability, and people consider it to be one of the most complex beautiful sonatas ever written. That would also be an interesting episode.
If the violin has long been considered the devil's instrument, how did it and the other strings become the foundation of the classical symphony orchestra and ensembles such as quartets and piano/flute/(insert instrument of choice) quintets? Please do a video on that.
Devils have always "existed".. the violin? Not so much. Id wager this story has something to do with our acceptance of the devils instrument of choice.
No shit, I saw the devil in convert once. That guy sucked. Made my ears bleed. But in all seriousness, the "devil" everyone seams to associate with music is based on the ignorance of people who think they know something based on knowing a small fraction. Like someone assuming they have pretty much seen a movie just because they watched a trailer. First off all lucifer is not the devil as people seam to think. He is only one of the masses of fallen angels, and not even one of the important ones. The reason he is associated with the devil is because he is the only fallen angel mentioned by name in the king James Bible. The passage said nothing of him being the satin, only fallen. The first fallen, and the true satin "the devil" was Azazil. The son of fire, made alone by God from fire to govern all other angels who the Lord cast from light. When God created man he held us above all of his other creations because in us alone did he bestow the gift of freewill. He comanded all of his other creations to bow to us as supplier. Azazil refused saying why should a son of fire bow before a son of clay and was cast out of the lords grace and ever hence titled as the satin, which literally means the acursed one.
Brian Elkins Lucifer was in fact a very important and powerful angel. In fact he was the most beautiful and wise of all the created beings. “You are the anointed cherub that covers; and I have set you so: you were on the holy mountain of god” from this we see that he was very important. He was the one that tricked a third of the angels to rebel. He is the serpent in the garden. He is the thief that comes to kill and destroy. He is Satan.
Charlie Daniels was referencing Paganini, who was referencing Guisseppi Tartini, who wrote "The Devil's Trill Sonata". Paganini didn't "memorize" his music. He actually "improvised" most of his performances. All great violinists referenced the diabolical, especially in the late 19th Century. Most hilarious today is this looney douche playing at a Devil Church in New Orleans:ua-cam.com/video/UJmlkne3VB0/v-deo.html
I had no idea all of this about him! I definitely have a different perspective towards him now! Was Paganini also the one who supposedly cut all but one string so that during the performance they all broke and he kept playing so well with one string people were so astounded some actually fainted?
Such a cool tale. I can totally imagine some gothic fantasy pieces with a young, troubled Paganini being hunted by the devil, like something Anne Rice would write.
No. English didn't even have the letter 'k' till about 1100 - before that it was 'c', and it was always hard.. The snoring sound is represented in English by 'z', but in your language by 'kh'. Neither is "right" - they're just different ways of representing the same sound..

makes sense when you think about it in a certain light. violinists were like rock stars and what's the one thing rock stars are known for? partying, which is tied to a number of vices, thus to those of a particularly religious bent, would associate with the devil. that or it's just people hating on some one who can do something extremely well that they can't.
From a contemporary biography by a man who knew him, I read that his mother was visited in a dream by an angel who would grant her a wish. Her wish was for her son to be the greatest violinist ever. Tartini, however, had a dream of making a deal with the devil in which his famous piece, now called “The Devil’s Trill,” came from.
You guys (Today I found out) have missed the real reasons why all the devilish rumours have swirled around Paganini. Paganini himself spread these rumours around for PUBLICITY. He was the Jimi Hendrix of his time. He was the first ever solo musician to make a fortune... why? BECAUSE OF HIS NOTORIETY!!! Do some research instead of spreading myths!!!
This was a really good video, but he didn't mention that Paganini was also a great composer. He wrote mostly virtuosic music for the violin, (including his famous 24 caprices) but he also composed music for guitar (which he also played) and other pieces of chamber music, as well as orchestral music, such as his six violin concertos.
+Mike Rowsdower It didn't, but to this day many rumors exist as to why. The answer is not a single factor, but many striking at the same time. First was the videogame market was saturated, as in everybody who wanted and could afford a game box already had one. Second was the ET reason, lack of confidence. Other than word of mouth, nobody knew what game was good or bad, so it was a gamble. Eventually people stopped taking that gamble. Third was the most interesting. Home computers became extremely popular leading up to '83 and the final nail in the coffin was the Commodore 64. With rebates and whatnot you could get a machine that not only played games, but could produce text documents, do your taxes, and a bunch of other nonsense for the same price of a machine strictly for games.
Shhhhhhhh, no, they need to do video on it. idgaf if it is easily answered by google, i just want to see that as a title on this channel, and see how they answer the question waaay to seriously.
Straight is just a general euphemism for someone with no deviations. On the "straight and narrow path". For instance it also refers to being drug/alcohol free. Swingers will often call outsiders "straights" as well. As to why homosexuals are called gay...you ever met a flaming queer? How would you describe them? "Happy" is likely to be one of the terms you'd use, and gay is just an old term for happy.
They left out the part where, after his death, the Devil sent Paganini on an everlasting world tour to gather more souls. Thus far, Paganini has only once failed to claim a soul he targeted... a fiddle player in the southern United States.
Darn superstition. Pity some people, no matter what century or era they're born into, can't just appreciate sheer talent. When they hear it. When they see it. When they witness it🎻
There was another violinist (I don't remember his name, but I know his last name was Monroe, because he might be related to my brother), but he was known to induce in himself a half-sleep, half-awake state that we all experiance every night, called threshold conciousness. That state is when you are at your most creative because all your mental inhibitions are down. A lot of artists have been known to induce this intentionally, and Monroe was no exception. One night he claimed that he was visited by the devil while in this state. The devil played him a tune on a violin that he said was the most beautiful thing he'd ever heard. As soon as the song was finished, he woke himself up and scrambled to write it down, and the result was hailed as one of the most beautiful peices ever written, but he always said that he could never match the beauty of the song that the devil had played for him that night.
Sure, Paganini might be a hell of a violinist - but, can he dress up in a cute skirt and prance around in the woods while playing his violin? _I think not, sir._
It is quite disturbing that you don't say that his first love was guitar, but that wasn't considered a respectable classical instrument in his time. He would go to play publicly and always bring his first love, the guitar, with him. After he blew the minds of the audience with the violin he would break out his guitar and play, much to the chagrin of his audience. He was often pelted with eggs and whatever the audience had at their disposal. His guitar compositions were remarkable. THAT is the REAL story most never hear about. "Today I Found Out".
I read a biography of Paganini by a contemporary that stated his mother had a dream that an angel came to her and would grant her one wish. She asked for her son, Nicolo, to be the greatest violinist. This when around the age of 8. She informed her son of this. His father was horrifically abusive to him. He also have up drinking and gambling when almost losing his violin. He would also confront the rumor mongers that said he received his gift from the devil or learned while in prison, both lies. Tartini (a predecessor), however, had a dream he sold his soul to the devil to become a wealthy and famous violinist, which he did, bringing is, "The Devil's Trill."
Paganini was in a lot of ways the first rock star, right up there with David Bowie and Jim Morrison. I can imagine them jamming together, in Heaven or in Hell.
He also wrote pieces that could be played in multiple ways, right down to on a single string, then he strung his violin with three very old strings (& one nice new one) in order to encourage the old strings to break mid performance This allowed him to keep playing after they broke, making his playing seem even more super human to the audience, who weren't in on the trick.
It's weird how Old Europe would say he dealt with the devil when he is extremely talented. In Asia, if one has such talent, we say the person is gifted by the Goddess herself.

sAME
pretty much yeah
My lecturer told me that Paganini was also shrouded in mystery because no one ever heard him practise
Paganini. what a legend. i had a book on this guy, i knew who the title was referring to. i highly recommend researching this iconic man.
He was born on the 27th and he died on the 27th. 27 = 3³. Accident? I dont think so...
Umm I don't understand??
@@tejas7127 i crunched them numbers mate. I can see the details and now I know the sectets! Dont try to find me, ill be long gone

How about a video about ET on Atari 2600 and whether or not it caused the video game crash?
+Mike Rowsdower
It didn't, but to this day many rumors exist as to why.
I know the answer, but I thought it would make for a good episode ;) Thanks for the reply!
I have sudden hankering to listen to that awesome song, "The Devil Went Down to Georgia". 😊
I guess you could say Paganini REALLY liked to fiddle with the violin...《grin》
The devil went down to Georgia, he was looking for a soul to steal.
When corsets were in fashion, what was the dress code for pregnant women who'd normally wear them?
Shiny Umbreon - there were corsets for pregnant women.
I'm born on October 27, and in Italy too.
What a coincidence!
I think it came with extreme dedication, passion and hard work
Why are homosexuals called gay and heterosexuals called straight?
zachary braker you need to type that into google not youtube.
Shhhhhhhh, no, they need to do video on it. idgaf if it is easily answered by google, i just want to see that as a title on this channel, and see how they answer the question waaay to seriously.
actually homo = same, such as homophone (sound the same), hetero = different/other, pretty close! Also i think you misunderstood the question.
@Livid Imp. GREAT, NOW THEY ARE NEVER GONNA MAKE A VIDEO ABOUT IT.
I expected the Devil's Trill somewhere.
Yeah, this is going to need a part two. Everyone is complaining that this wasn't what they thought it was.
He was the first shredder.
Dude was metal af
They left out the part where, after his death, the Devil sent Paganini on an everlasting world tour to gather more souls. Thus far, Paganini has only once failed to claim a soul he targeted... a fiddle player in the southern United States.
He tried...but Johnny...well...they ain't no beating that boy at the fiddle...
Darn superstition. Pity some people, no matter what century or era they're born into, can't just appreciate sheer talent. When they hear it. When they see it. When they witness it🎻
Paganini is the OG Ling Ling. He practiced not 40, but *400* hours a day.
You might be thinking of Giuseppe Tartini; he claimed that happened to him, hence his "Devil's Trill" Sonata.
@@sophiatalksmusic3588 could be.
Sure, Paganini might be a hell of a violinist - but, can he dress up in a cute skirt and prance around in the woods while playing his violin? _I think not, sir._
Noremaad I'm sure he would if he was alive!
@@sophiatalksmusic3588 why would he? At the first.place?
While not a violinist that sounds like more of something Mozart would’ve done lol
But can he play 15 notes a second?
Interesting. That can be sacrilegious.
@@stupidfanboyph Very fast!
Is it bad that the first thing I thought when I saw this was Robot Satan?
Paganini was in a lot of ways the first rock star, right up there with David Bowie and Jim Morrison. I can imagine them jamming together, in Heaven or in Hell.
1 thing you should have mentioned is that paganninis preformance greatly influenced Franz Liszt who later became the devil behind the piano :)
Thanks so much. I have begged you do a video on Franz Liszt. He inspired piano music and loved Paganini.
more devil videos pls
2:28 sacrilegious boi can play faster
If you can fake it slowly you can fake it quickly
Neoclassical-Metal guitar virtuoso Yngwie Malmsteen has stated that Paganini's, ' 24 Caprices ', is his all-time fave music piece...
I read the title and immediately thought "oh this must be Paganini."
HMMM? Twelve notes per second. (2:30)Guess wat, Ben Lee can do 15 notes and Ling Ling can do 40 notes per second. #twosetviolin
0:52 pananini???
Glad someone else noticed that. I think I winced when he said it.
"And thank you for watching..." vanishes.
hey Michael, vsauce here
12 notes ? Bah..
Ben Lee (sacrilegious) can play 15 notes
#twoset
Polyphonic did a really good video about the whole "deal with the devil" throughout history, that I'd recommend watching after this video.
Having taken up the violin myself I was so excited to see one of my inspirations in one of your videos

IKMNification WTF are you talking about?
There was a depiction of the devil and a violin in Futurama. You should check it out.
Futurama?! Sounds like an exhibit at The World's Fair.
he also composed a fiendishly difficult piece that has come to be known as "The Devil's Trill"
PandaBytes that was Tartini

You must be thinking of the Devil's Chuckle, or Caprice 13.
Caprice 13 in my opinion is the easiest paganini caprice - still very hard
Training at the age of 5 until you grow up and learning under a good violinist teachers will definitely make you the best violinist...
It's weird how Old Europe would say he dealt with the devil when he is extremely talented. In Asia, if one has such talent, we say the person is gifted by the Goddess herself.
