Mounting a tube type tire by hand

  • How to mount a tire by hand. Here’s a 1 take unedited video of how I like to mount tires with tubes. You just need a tire, a tube, a few basic tools and some patience. There are many different techniques and ways to do this. This is how I have always done it and I’ve had good success with it. I do not use starch, I do not use rim flaps and I don’t put air in the tube before I install it. I run 8psi off road and 15psi on road. 👍

    Thanks for the tips. Struggled trying to do this with the rim on the ground as so many do to mount a radial but no joy. This technique worked very well.

      Excellent! I’m glad it helped. Some time/tyre types are tough no matter how you do it.

    8 minutes! Just finished the mounting of my 17x 4.5 for a rod project first tire mounting took hour, 20 minutes 🥵🙃. Have not done this in 50 years… truck tires in my 20S !😉 Should have watched you first 😉…did pretty much what you displayed thanks ! Next three , hope faster👊🏼🌻

      They definitely get easier as you go. My last tire is always the fastest. And I usually lose my touch by the next time I need to replace them. 😆

    I didn’t know these were tubed tires

      They are indeed “tube type” but… I’ve also run them tubeless without any problems. It’s personal preference.

    Great video, what is your reasoning behind running tubes in those specific tires? They can run tubeless correct? Just wondering why you like running tubes in them.

    • @redeyecafegarage7484

      Thanks. They are “tube type” tires on tube style rims with no safety humps. I have run tubeless tires on them but I’ve had even better luck running tubes.

    Is that an offset stem tube?

    When ordering tubes for these tires, is there a certain size or number your looking for?

    This is great! Thank you. I have a 1936 Buick Special (thin tire) where the valve stem rotted and leaked air out. I'm going to try to tackle that tube a similar way your did. I can break the bead with a board and a car as weight. Is there a valve stem protector or is it just tube to rim. I know about the tube protector inside the rim. I have tire spoons and a valve too similar to yours.

      @redeyecafegarage7484  10 місяців тому +1

      Cool! I’m sure you’ll be fine. Tubes are designed with built in stem protection. There is a super thick rubber coated portion of the stem that goes through the rim. You don’t need any extra protection. Just be sure to get a good quality heavy duty tube. I like Carlisle

      @@redeyecafegarage7484Thank you! I've done small tires...lawnmowers, tractors, etc, but not a car, will take my time!

      I've managed to get the tube out. Broke bead with a board and a truck. They did not install tube flap or valve guide which caused the leak.

      Thanks to your video I managed to get it!! Worked great, I also install the valve grommets because the tube tends to move inside the wheel which wore a hold in the stem. Sorry for all the comments, but this really helped.

    do you ever inflate the tube out of the rim first to make sure it's good? Oh and Happy Independence Day.

    • @redeyecafegarage7484
      @redeyecafegarage7484  2 роки тому

      Thanks you too! I do not. There’s a lot of extra steps everyone tells me I “have to do” but I never do and I’ve never had any problems. Talcum powder, rim flaps, pre inflation. It’s all just extra time and money in my mind. Haha! I’ve been doing it this way for years with. I issues. 🤷‍♂️ maybe it’s just dumb luck. 😆

    Narrow rim, 19x3 inch. Tips on fitting the tube in there? I cannot for the life of me get it started once the one bead is in. The sidewalls are super close together

    • @redeyecafegarage7484
      @redeyecafegarage7484  Рік тому

      Hmm that’s a tough one. Sometimes in motorcycle and bike tires I put the tube inside the tire first. Just be careful not to pinch anything.

    • @OldMotorcycleAdventures
      @OldMotorcycleAdventures Рік тому

      @redeyecafegarage7484 I finally ended up getting it after hours of struggling, and ruining one tube. The opening between the sidewalls was a pinky width, so I had to spread the sidewalls while simultaneously trying to feed the tube in that narrow gap. My hand is bruised and super swollen from having it pinched in there for the hour or two I fought with it. If I had known how much trouble this was, I would have converted the tractor to the wider 16 inch implement wheels lol

    Nicely done sir! Curiosity question: looked like some sort of duct-tapey-looking stuff in the center of the wheel? I'm sure I'm just revealing my ignorance, but I wondered what that is. Happy 4th to you and the family!

    • @Mrshotshell
      @Mrshotshell 2 роки тому

      Pretty sure it is duct tape to keep the rivets or seam inside the wheel from rubbing on the tube

    • @redeyecafegarage7484
      @redeyecafegarage7484  2 роки тому

      Hi, these wheels had some pitting so I used t-Rex tape to smooth them out. You’re supposed to use rim flaps but I never do. Haha! Happy 4th to you too!

    A question for the Mad Scientist 😵‍💫. Why do you use NDT tires over others? Looks or a performance reason? What size do you use sir? Thank you my friend

      I’ve tried several different tires…. Nothing performs or looks as good on these old Jeeps. I made test comparison videos agains modern sxs tires and still chose ndt’s. These are 7.50’s
