Appreciate the tutorial bro. I was able to replace the drifting analog stick. Also a tip to everyone: be sure when you are re-soldering the new analog stick in place, don't cross your solder.
To fix a stick drift problem, I just did this minus the solder sucker and heat gun. It was not easy or fun..... but it got done. Wish I could pull it off with the speed & ease this guy is able to.

Problem is that everywhere I go to order new analogs the reviews say that they are garbage and not accurate and have lots of dead zones. I really need good, working analog sensors. Anyone know where I can get some?
That would be awesome. I actually found the place that Sony buys their parts from. But I feel like that place is the problem, with making cheap garbage.
Sony knows this is a common point of failure. They could make it easier for the end user to repair by just using a ribbon cable connection like they do for the other components. They could use a screw mount to fix the joysticks to the body of the controller. Also, I would not use a heat gun if you're not familiar as the joystick's plastic melts easily. Just keep hitting the pads with the soilder wick and make sure you coat the wick with Flux to make it draw the soilder easily.
btw hot air is optional it will make it easy to remove the joystick but just putting the solder iron the the solder joints and wiggling them slightly would also remove them
What a huge pita this was. Haha. I found snipping the tabs off after using the solder pump was helpful for my wick to lap up the remainder. Also, if you get a sticky one, apply a small dome of fresh solder and wick it again. The new stuff will help suck the old stuff into the wick.
The springs, this is just the press down "r3" requiring a firmer press? Or does it also make the stick glide more stiff/accurate? I always accidentally press r3 heat of moment.
Bought a 100 gram spring from your online store and after I installed the spring the thumb stick gets stuck when pushed to the corners I haven’t installed it onto the motherboard yet because of this. Any help?
Ebay ones actually work. I just installed one with 100 gram sprint as well. I emailed him and he said it’s normal for it to get stuck around the corners as there’s more travel distance but once installed in the motherboard and in the controller completely the travel distance decreases so the analog stick can’t go all the way to the sides so it won’t get stuck. Mine got stuck until I installed it completely and it works good.
when the module is not seated in a controller the stick will lock in place when pushed to the edges , and this is accentuated by the higher tension everything is fine. once in a controller the edges of the controller house will stop the stick before it goes far enough to stick .
Great vid. After replacing the analog module do you have to recalibrate the stickes or something? When I replaced my left one with a new analog module it drifts to the right. I can move in all directions but always drifts back to the right.
@@Hamza-iz4nc no fortunately the original sticks were ok and I just resoldered it back making sure I had really good connects..I think the drift was due to either bad analog modules or ones the maybe we not 100% compatible.
The drift can be by the positioning of the green potentiometer on the side. You can try tilting the potentiometer maybe 1-2mm at most to find the magic spot. If you have a multimeter you can check the ohm readings of a good centered stick and align the potentiometer before installation.

The original sticks on Elite Series 2 fucked me up, so i think this is the best solution while the original sticks have deadzone and / or wobble. Just solder new joysticks from default One controller and change the tension consistent by replace the spring inside. For ego shooter use a light tension on the left joystick and a hard tension for the right joystick.
I have a PS4 slim controller and I'm planning to mod the stick tension. The modules in the controller are the orange ones and there's no spring inside them. Would it still work if I swap it out with the green module?
Word of advice people don't use a gas powered soldering iron and try to burn the solder off in one go like a certain friend did when he melted the plastic on the joy stick lol.

I have an X360 controller that isn't exactly broken, it's just that the left analog stick has become quite a bit loose and doesn't quite snap back to center, instead sometimes it leans slightly to the left, which most of the time isn't enough to cause mayor problems but it's still annoying. I'm not sure if fixing that is worth going through all this, especially since it works perfectly otherwise.
Question! What would happen if i took out the spring and didn't replace it? Would the analog stick still function??? Wanting to mod one of my old controllers to use as a FPV sim, and having the left stick act like a gimbal with no 'return to center' function would really help.

I'm having issues where both anologue thumb controls don't respond after trying to clean left module which had a slight drift. I've ended changing both sensor discs after a clean with 99% alcohol, now all I get from gamepad tester is showing both anolgues stuck in up left for axis visual display, rest buttons work fine.

See last night I was trying to slip/wedge something(a spacer) in between the contact that L3 clicks down onto and the adhesive wasn't dry enough and the spacer I had slipped right inside there and I cant get it out.... soooooo now its stuck inside. Idk if I've ruined it. And i am maybe 67% confident in my skill of doing what you just did maybe? Haha I'm a little rusty at soldering is all. It says on the website 75g is standard. I just placed an order for 7 springs all in the 10g-30g range. Tendonitis sucks. For the last 20 years I've just ripped the spring entirely out of the left analog stick (You can cut it out from the top), but now with a full soldering kit on the way for the first time I might actually create a smooth functioning low-but-not-zero resistance analog stick. I'm going to get two Custom Xbox controllers for playing Forza Horizon 5 and equip one of them with a 10g spring and the other with a 20g spring (and 30g should be fine on the right stick, for whatever reason my right thumb never hurts). If it works well I'll build custom controllers for all my nephews and nieces to make sure they never have to live with the pain that I do.
@@redfr4me570 What I used to do is cut away enough of the spring housing to be able to use a dental pick to hook and pull on the end of the spring and eventually yank the whole thing out, my intention was usually just to "trim" the spring but most of the time I cut it too short and decided that "no spring is better than a really mushy analog stick" and pull the whole thing out. I would basically destroy a dental pick and pair of extra fine needlenose pliers every time, and it's not uncommon to have bleeding fingers by the end from all the sharp metal. Worth it, but kind of rough. Lately what I've been doing is get a cheap pack of 1mm head diamond burrs, and if you understand where the spring is inside your analog stick mechanism what you want to do is just plunge the grinding burr through the housing that holds the spring and just cut the top of the spring. Just cutting the top ring of the spring will usually reduce tension by a lot, and if you want tension reduced even more just keep cutting rings further down. You will probably end up wrecking the first controller though, it's very difficulty to judge whether cutting one more ring will leave you with just pleasant light tension or a mushy non-centering stick. Remember that the rubber stick pads have a lot of weight relative to the analog mechanism and even what feels fairly springy on the stub might feel mushy with the stick on top, so you need to test centering with the stick on top every time you make an adjustment to the spring. The problem with this method though vs. my old methods is that if you want zero spring tension then leaving the spring inside the housing can make the action feel a bit gritty, pulling the spring out entirely is the best way to have a smooth zero tension analog stick, it's just excessively frustrating getting the spring out.

Yeah that’s perfectly fine the colour tells you the spring tension but all the potentiometers are the same if it’s a dual shock controller even the dual sense ps5 controller uses the same modules.
having repaired plenty of dualshock 4 pads in the past this guy makes it look very simple you need very steady hands to complete this

@@redfr4me570 I don't think my old methods are something you can teach over chat, It's really a mess that takes hours of frustration, I think learning to solder is by far the best option.

Nope that’s because the micro switch is off center from the stick it’s just messed up physics.

Yeah that’s perfectly fine the colour tells you the spring tension but all the potentiometers are the same if it’s a dual shock controller even the dual sense ps5 controller uses the same modules.
