Once again a really good video! Something about Marko. As a child, his first instrument was the guitar and it has remained important to him throughout his career as a musician. I understand he can also play the piano on some level, but maybe not on stage ...: D It’s really unfortunate that he left Nightwish. Nightwish lost bassist, singer and guitarist at the same time! Nightwish has a few songs where Marko switches to guitar for a while in the middle. Or in some songs, he starts with the guitar. Then there is a change in the song, where Marko drops his foot down and continues on the bass very smoothly. And start singing at the same time. That point is one of my favorite moments in that song. :) Marko often visits the albums of different bands. Now in 2021 he was a singer in three different songs. Swedish band Therion, who released their latest album in the very beginning of 2021. Then in the summer Marko was the guitarist of slide guitarist Mika Jaakkola's "Soita" as a guest singer and in the autumn as a guest singer of the Finnish band Waltari. Dutch band Delain used him as a guest singer on several of their albums. On the first album, Marko played bass as a session bassist!
I think Marko just loves that double neck, it's visually striking on stage, lends itself to a bit of a steampunk vibe, and I guess he's making his life a bit easier by not setting himself up for an instrument change between the songs. And I ABSOLUTELY love the SOUND he's getting from that guitar. I know most of it is in the cabinets and the speakers, but it definitely sounds how it looks.
I actually agree with your observation on Marcos voice, it's something I've always noticed and you are correct it is very endearing and adds some additional perfect spice into the band. Great reaction! About the double-neck guitar, there are songs that he plays both bass and the "acoustic" guitar from that double-neck, like Dead Boy's Poem. This song doesn't have any bass on his part, but the tone from his double-neck guitar is probably unique enough for him to decide to use it on The Islander. And, please, I sincerely hope you don't listen to the hate radio from the minority of fanboys/fangirls... I sincerely love your reaction for being honest and go away from those "aaaaahhhhh", "oooohhhhh"s for views. Please, don't stop saying your mind. People that have more than two braincells will know that each song and each band hits you differently, and not every song is a 9-ish just because it's your favourite band (I was think you'd go for the 8.5-8.6 range... the 9.0 was a real surprise for me). Well, thank you again and keep rocking out!!!!
oh yeah, another little tidbit since you were talking about the vocals and knowing where to go, I did read something from another commenter in another reaction that with what you said will probably make more sense than they explained then it does to me they said the reason at the end where Floor was laughing was because she had to quickly improvise at the end because he went higher then they rehearsed it if that makes sense. Oh, I'm told Troy's instrument is called a "low whistle".
Am I the first person on this forum to give you this: Marco is the only human on this planet with a right to have a bumper sticker "Floor is my back-up singer". For what it's worth my take on Marco's voice, it's bluesy. With his tendency of getting the full front-of-the-face bright sound to getting downright nasal, he puts a spin on the lyrics. And the double-neck, he's using both throughout the show. It's relatively light, of carbon fiber if I'm not mistaken. As Warwick bought Framus, they have all the skill to manufacture a great instrument.
@@monluztrella Happy to be corrected, thanks for your comment. I have immense respect for Joakim's talent, he is an illustrator of complex stories. And this is in addition of his magnificent voice.
David spends 50% of video having a potential fight with commenters in the future. It'll be little disappointing if those people fail to show up 😁 This song is pure flavor win on many levels. It's Marko's song, playing as Islander, on a small island while people swayed left and right to form waves. As many people have said, Marko is trained first as guitar player. Bass is his second "mode". And I've seen him play few other. Guy is a legend.
In the music video for Élan, at the end we can see Marko strumming a cello. I think I recall seeing a cello in his studio in a clip from a documentary. Somebody with a better recollection should be able to confirm.
Markooo! RAWWWRRRR! Thanks for doing this one, my friend. I think this is the perfect song that showcases Marko’s pure talent, and it’s magical ain’t it?!
What you call as „thin tone or pinch „ in some spots is what the good vocal coaches and trained singers call as a bit nasal tone . They figure he knows how to control his voice and this tone is purposeful.. I think you nailed it with your description as a non vocal coach and just by your knowledge of music.
I don't understand your comment about his voice but, the fact that every member of this band are so talented is what makes them the best. Greetings from the Nightwish Army.
Fun fact is that Marco wrote the music for the song, not Tuomas. And you are right, the slightly pinched quality in Marco's vocals is what makes his vocals stand out, especially in this song. Unlike other vocalists that have a pinched quality, he knows how to use it without sounding bad and without damaging his voice. Another fun fact is that Marco studied classical guitar (and vocals) in high school, and this performances shows off that talent very well.
He plays the double neck during certain parts of the show to reduce the amount of time he needs to spend with his Tech, this song is part of the set that requires him to bounce back and forth between bass/guitar
Many have described Markos voice quality in this piece as forward or nasal. ..."pinched" is just another adjective to describe a "subjective" experience. ( albeit one that can have negative conotations) When Marko goes for either a nasal or forward placement it is a choice, you can agree or disagree ( like it, not like it, find it annoying, find it pleasurable ..whatever) but make no mistake...he is talented and practiced and makes some very interesting choices concerning his vocals.
haha, now that you've said that was the first time you heard Marco solo you know you're going to get showered with requests for their rendition of high hopes by Pink Floyd, some say it's a cover, others claim it's a tribute, you can decide, love your reactions, LOL
Thank you Home Gnome! Great taste my friend. Hope you feel better very soon David! Marko is a bassist, but he also has some classical guitar training. Marko loves to play those folk/camp fire style songs. Marko uses this double neck for 4 songs in the middle of the set. On 2 of the 4 he plays guitar and bass. Then he switches to his standard bass. This is a little slow down in the middle of the set. It also gives Emppu a chance to take a break and slam a bear or two. It give Floor a little breather as well. Marko is a rock singer. His biggest influence is Ronnie James Dio. Unfortunately several years ago Marko went through a throat surgery. He claimed that he lost some of his high end and needed to learn to sing all over again. Merry Christmas David!
I think your observations on the voices were spot on. Marko's more fragile or vulnerable voice he uses here - are of course perfect to match the lyrics - and so are the voice techniques Floor uses. They are super pro - both of them. Great reaction 👍
Thanks Homegnome 🤘🏻 And thank you mr David for reacting to this fan favorite from Nightwish 👏🏻 Marko has a very recognizable voice. You call it a little pinch, somebody else calls it a twang.. what's in a name 🤷♀️ idk. No criticism imo. Your doing great and a 9.0 is a beautiful score! Thank you and just ignore the negativity, some people forget their manners when they can't get punched 😉😂
There are a number of songs where Marco switches halfway through the song from bass to guitar and back again. So him having it here in this part of the concert means that those songs are likely to come up shortly. This is one of the few songs not written by Tuomas but by Marco.
Your question about why Marko didn’t just pick up a guitar and play this? If I remember right, the next song after this on that set list was Weak Fantasy, which you reacted to, where he plays both necks in the song.
You're absolutely right, David. I own a couple of basses, and I can play them. But I certainly don't consider myself a bass player. My bass player plays circles around me on bass. Usually, when I see a bassist play guitar, they approach it too heavy handed when you want to have a relaxed finesse. That's not to say a good bassist isn't relaxed when he/she plays bass. But it just a different animal. You just get used to how it feels after years of playing a particular instrument. But it's very clear that Marco has mastered both. As to the double neck question. Maybe it's just a cool instrument? We do a song where I play 12-string electric, but I use a doubleneck because I don't own a dedicated electric 12-string. I justify that as we go into a Zepplin medley afterwards. But who knows? I saw an earlier comment that said that particular instrument of his is equipped with a piezo pickup? That could be it. Great reaction, by the way.
Nice reaction, again David. I don't think you'll get much hate for commenting on Marco's vocals and I'd be disappointed if that were the case. Marco has a great voice but you're right, it is quite different and I think you use the right word when you described it as endearing. Also, I love the way that Floor is able to give him so much 'space'. She is so controlled.
Thanks Home Gnome ! Great review and now you see bass players aren't always shoved in the back and forgotten about LOL. I agree on the score, I love the song but it's not my favorite sung by him (Master Passion Greed is, and I hope someone will or has requested it already) There you'll hear a totally different Marko, a totally different NW in fact. Marko studied classical guitar, bass is his second instrument. As for your "playing with a pick problem" can I suggest superglue LMAO
@@homegnome2429 yeah that's true, but there is no live version of that one. I understand why, but still love it. A shame they didn't record it as a documentary of making DPP.

@@recentisland1513 Ya, the spelling threw you through and through. In a similar vein, I find that some vain people have opinions like a weather vane. We can't be sure whether or not that's true, but trying to figure it out ties me in knots.

I've always felt that Marko's pinch in his voice works perfect when the song can use a more vulnerable tone, especially this one, his tribute to High Hopes and Voice of my Father from his solo work
I was curious when I saw 5 NW songs for February and already 7th day and nothing. Thank you for your reaction. Wait, do you really imply that Marco is not perfect ? Does it mean he might be human after all ?
I love the very singular slightly pinched sound Marco has. That's why I was sort of baffled everyone didn't immediately figure out it was him when he did the Finnish Masked Singer contest last year (and won!). No one else sounds just like him, not even his Tarot bandmate Tuple Salmela who has a very similar sound at times.
I love your reactions, because why? you analyze absolutely correct, even if the one or the other fan does not like it but I like that very much. By the way, Floor and Troy became full members of Nightwish at the same time in October 2013.
The reason why Marco uses a double neck has the same reason why he has two beards; he’s an awesome badass !!!! You should check it their old stuff. Wish I had an angel, bye bye beautiful, dead to the world, nemo, elvenpath are some examples. Rock on man !! Also plz check out ides of march from Myles 😅
Yeah this song is off their Poet and the Pendulum record just after the firing of Tarja from the band. It tore Toumas up to give her the letter to that effect. The other song that really shows off Maro's pipes is While your lips are still red. That song was part of a movie soundtrack that Toumas wrote.
I almost forgot! Marko’s singing.. he has modeled his singing after another great rock/metal singer: the late Ronnie James Dio. In some songs, especially off of Marko’s solo album, you could easily swap out Marko for Dio and it would sound the same. He’s that good.
There's a Finnish Black Sabbath cover band called Sapattivuosi. Once they moved to Dio era, it was Marko who did the singing. Not many people in Finland who can sing lines meant for RJD and not sound seriously lacking.
Re the double guitar. I think I'm right in saying that this piece is the only one in which Marco only uses the (acoustic) guitar half. There are a few Nightwish songs in which Marco will use both and a double neck is obviously easier than belting backstage to change guitars and then (likely) having to do it again in one song. Because this is the only purely acoustic guitar song, it doesn't make sense for Marco to have a separate guitar for just the one piece. ((chuckling)) So says my logic!!! On another tack ....... please take care of your health, young man!! Take time off if you need to and get yourself better again. Best wishes to you.
Ii don't understand anything about music, i am just listening, but or because of that your reactions are very nice to watch and listen. Dude, you are right, everyone hears it, Marco just sings in his nose, so he has that nasality in sound. We know, he can sing placing his voice, so that means he just have chosen that nasal sound, so it is up to him

This song has lyrics that I think inspired the virtual venue used for the 2 Epic 1 3/4 hr ea virtual concerts at the end of May 2021 in a whimsical Virtual world containing the venue pub location called The Islanders Arms. It is a Steam Punk inspired building with a lighthouse at "the end of the world" . The airship in the world is named "The Spirit of Punk". It arrives to start the show and leaves afterward. Each concert had a slightly different set list (mix of older and new songs) based on the tour that got put off from 2020 until recently, due to the pandemic. Hey David, good reaction on this Piece, I'll gave it a 9.0. (The Reaction, not the Song). To Your Question, Marco plays the Doubleneck (The Beast in Nightwish Terms) , because of its unique Sound (Piezo Pick Ups in The Neck), I hope that makes Sense. I am not a great Writer (English is not my first Language). Greetings from Germany
Hello David, great reaction, but, like I told you before, you should react to The Greatest Show on Earth. After that, you will believe in 10's 😊. Stay safe!
Why the semiquotes? A low whistle is very much a flute... the rough taxonomy is woodwinds > flutes > fipple flutes > tinwhistles/pennywhistles > low whistle. The side-blown chromatic concert flute isn't the only thing rightly called a flute.
8:35 He asks from the audience kindly if he sings the chorus again, are they singing along, , (would you/ or he told them to "Sing with me") "laulatte mukana"? / Telling them to "Sing with me"

Marko doesn't change the guitar for this one song, because before and after there were still some songs where he needed both acoustics and bass.

Well, if we include studio albums, Joakim Brodén might be allowed to have that bumper sticker. Floor has sung backup vocals on several Sabaton albums.
@@monluztrella Happy to be corrected, thanks for your comment. I have immense respect for Joakim's talent, he is an illustrator of complex stories. And this is in addition of his magnificent voice.
David spends 50% of video having a potential fight with commenters in the future. It'll be little disappointing if those people fail to show up 😁
This song is pure flavor win on many levels.
@@billattercliffe8655 Correct. He was also strumming a cello in his solo gig.
You cant go wrong with Nightwish ... great reaction...no hate here
Markooo! RAWWWRRRR! Thanks for doing this one, my friend. I think this is the perfect song that showcases Marko’s pure talent, and it’s magical ain’t it?!
Indeed it was, looking forward to seeing more of him on the mic. We gotta do another livestream soon Double J.
What you call as „thin tone or pinch „ in some spots is what the good vocal coaches and trained singers call as a bit nasal tone . They figure he knows how to control his voice and this tone is purposeful.. I think you nailed it with your description as a non vocal coach and just by your knowledge of music.
The double neck is a Warwick Infinity bass with a Framus Panthera guitar and it´s hand crafted for him. Framus Is ownd by Wawick.
You nailed it… It’s Tampere, my home town… And my first NW concert.
He plays the double neck during certain parts of the show to reduce the amount of time he needs to spend with his Tech, this song is part of the set that requires him to bounce back and forth between bass/guitar
while your lips are still red is also a great song with marko lead
Many have described Markos voice quality in this piece as forward or nasal. ..."pinched" is just another adjective to describe a "subjective" experience. ( albeit one that can have negative conotations) When Marko goes for either a nasal or forward placement it is a choice, you can agree or disagree ( like it, not like it, find it annoying, find it pleasurable ..whatever) but make no mistake...he is talented and practiced and makes some very interesting choices concerning his vocals.
Thanks David! Enjoyed it, as always ❤
haha, now that you've said that was the first time you heard Marco solo you know you're going to get showered with requests for their rendition of high hopes by Pink Floyd, some say it's a cover, others claim it's a tribute, you can decide, love your reactions, LOL
Cheers Thorgrim
Marko can add to his CV: Floor as a backup singer.
I think your observations on the voices were spot on. Marko's more fragile or vulnerable voice he uses here - are of course perfect to match the lyrics - and so are the voice techniques Floor uses.
They are super pro - both of them.
Great reaction 👍
Thanks Homegnome 🤘🏻
And thank you mr David for reacting to this fan favorite from Nightwish 👏🏻
Marko has a very recognizable voice. You call it a little pinch, somebody else calls it a twang.. what's in a name 🤷♀️ idk. No criticism imo.
Your doing great and a 9.0 is a beautiful score! Thank you and just ignore the negativity, some people forget their manners when they can't get punched 😉😂
🤘
There are a number of songs where Marco switches halfway through the song from bass to guitar and back again. So him having it here in this part of the concert means that those songs are likely to come up shortly.
This is one of the few songs not written by Tuomas but by Marco.
The Nightweasels returned! lol
The double-neck is because there is a song where he plays both, forget which one it is ATM, but I'm sure someone will comment it.
That would be My Walden I guess, which was performed just before this song
Hearing Marko sing and play is always a joy. He can play classical guitar as well, too bad it isn't as showcased as him being a bassist.
You really need to do the devil and the deep dark ocean and high hopes, to hear a different side of Marko's voice
Devil coming later this month (hopefully soon) - High Hopes will land in April
Best wishes, David, get better soon. Good Score. I love Marko voice. I love his recent solo álbum .
MPG is on my potential list, just a little unsure as DH been least impressed with the studio tracks when it comes to NW
@@homegnome2429 yeah that's true, but there is no live version of that one. I understand why, but still love it. A shame they didn't record it as a documentary of making DPP.
DUSKWIND!!! Nice!
Great reaction and analyze. Dont be afraid criticizes too:). Recommend also check also album/music video version. Singer in that is Anette and they change song quite lot for this live version.
Islander, Written by Marco Hietala and Tuomas Holopainen
Are comments really that cut throat?
Nah, passionate fans and a love for their music. You are doing great and that is why we tune in.
The Tampere concert is a pearl and so is the city. If you ever get the chance please come for a concert you will have a fabulous time.
Edit: Finnish is spoken exactly as it is written.
Unlike English :)
well as english speaking person I find that in Finnish the 'y' is pronounced like somewhere between the 'u' in tune and 'oo' good I think ?.. and the r is rolled a bit ??? However English spelling is ridiculously confusing.. How did I ever learn to read hehe
@@recentisland1513 Ya, the spelling threw you through and through. In a similar vein, I find that some vain people have opinions like a weather vane. We can't be sure whether or not that's true, but trying to figure it out ties me in knots.
@@billattercliffe8655 lol!!!!English spelling is throughly rough although I hear that two vain people here are using weather vanes too to do it in the dew.
I just came here to say "Lets go Islanders"!
Nightwish First US tour date 5-7-2022 Lowell, MA Tickets on sale now!
Showmanship?
Farewell Marko Hietala! 🎸🎤🤘
Marko’s brother Zachary Hietala is guitar player. TAROT band was their first band with brothers…
How the hell can you say Marco can't sing!!!!!! Ooops sorry 😁
Thanks for your reactions always honest, keep rocking David.
It's an acoustic of one of their songs. You can check out the music video for it, it's pretty good.
Marko The Viking 🤘😎🤘.
Nuff Said !!!
NWSU.
Ii don't understand anything about music, i am just listening, but or because of that your reactions are very nice to watch and listen.
Have you noticed that Nightwish is on tour in Canada and US on May 2022, assuming you live there. They are worth to see live.
I havent noticed your reaction to everdream, waiting for that..
Yes, another great song by Marko
Thanks Home Gnome!
👍🤘
Marco ..amazing powerful, voice great reaction
@David Heretic Thank you for another honest and awesome--and awesome because you're honest--reaction!
As far as the haters are concerned, "[Theirs] Is An Empty Hope" ;)
Yoyoka (anything she does) ANYTHING!
a 9.0 is good, i thought you would be in the mid to high 8's. Good reaction hun and from the February standpoint hope you had a good Xmas and weren't too sick. Peace
No 'hate' comment, here! I'm not going to argue with someone, who knows what he's talking about.
Dude, you are right, everyone hears it, Marco just sings in his nose, so he has that nasality in sound. We know, he can sing placing his voice, so that means he just have chosen that nasal sound, so it is up to him
Two things why Marco plays the double neck, its looks better in this song and he must play both necks in the next song.
I only have one thing to say: Marko is my eternal crush.
I am currently fluttering my eyelashes and little hearts are circling around my head when I see Marko
Very nice reaction, thanks!
NIGHTWISH AND MEGADETH?? 🔥
MARCO SINGING HEAVY SOLO? 🤘🏻
My suggestion is another cover of them, which we HARDLY see on UA-cam.🇳🇱
And if you like a HEAVY Nightwish sound,
this will be a very nice one! 🔥🤘🏻😎
Marco is singing solo on this one.
Check out their cover of Megadeth, symphony of destruction.
(Montreal 2004)
AND A HEAVY SIREN FLOOR & MARCO?
The second also hardly on UA-cam, is a heavy Siren, The Siren performed live of course by Floor Jansen, and also again a very good singing Marco🔥❤️🤘🏻
Enjoy it, and I with you!
Finally, this one.
Very good sing analysis

Marco has a few songs where he switches from guitar to bass in this concert.
Hello David, great reaction, but, like I told you before, you should react to The Greatest Show on Earth. After that, you will believe in 10's 😊. Stay safe!
Troy's 'flute' is a low whistle.
Telling them to "Sing with me"
F**k your the Real Deal and Best Reactor EVER!
FEELIN' YOU Kim!!!
Marco’s solo album is a treat 🤘🎸🎸
Great reaction, no hate 😁
Finally!
How many people can say that Floor Jansen was there backup singer?
